Her Guide to America’s Best Colleges is the only comprehensive survey of higher-learning options compiled exclusively for women, using a ranking system based on criteria that women identify as most important to them.

Safety, in particular, is an important concern that the women we surveyed consistently ranked as a high priority in their college search. For this reason, Her Guide to America’s Best Colleges is the only college guide that considers a school’s safety history in addition to other important criteria such as reputation, student to faculty ratio, graduation rates, and quality education programs. More than a collection of rankings and statistics, Her Guide to America’s Best Colleges also offers editorial insight and practical advice to serve as a trusted guide in helping college-bound women—and by extension their parents, guardians and counselors—arrive at the school choice that best meets their individual needs and priorities. Those colleges and universities that ranked in the top 300 are distinguished with the Women’s Choice Award®, an extraordinary accolade that is highly regarded by women. Women’s Choice Award colleges and universities can take advantage of that distinction with a custom profile in the College Guide to highlight the accomplishment and how the school meets her needs for a higher education. Best Wishes,

methodology

OUR award methodology allows us to rank ALL COLLEGES using quantitative measures WHICH SUPPORT THE SAFETY AND REPUTATION ANALYSIS.

SAFETY

Based on 3-year on-campus STUD/FAC arrest records Students to Faculty ratio

GRAD-RATE Percentage of students who graduate in 4 years

REP INDEX Reputation Index based on applications to enrollments

OOSTATE In vs. Out of State mix

Utilizing data from the US Dept. of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), as well as survey data we collected from over a thousand women on what is important to them in defining a quality college or university, we arrived at uniform measures for: • Reputation • Student to faculty ratios • Depth of education • Campus safety • 4 year graduation rates

Using weights derived from our survey of women, we assigned points to each of these measures

and ranked schools according to the total points earned. Where ties existed, cost for out-of-state tuition determined precise ranking. Reputation is a function of female admission rates and enrollment rates, as well as out-of-state enrollments. Safety rankings were based on three years of campus crime rates, and weighed based on our women’s survey of the importance of different types of

offenses (forcible sex offenses rated highest). Depth of education was primarily a function of postgraduate to undergraduate ratio and levels of degrees granted. Data came from 2014 fall enrollment statistics. Safety data covered 2012-2014. We only considered schools offering at least a 4-year bachelor’s degree, that had a restrictive admissions policy (no open admissions).

6 Ways to Stay Evaluating a school’s safety record and policies are important considerations for college-bound women. Here are a few resources and key questions to help in the process.

1

3

✓✓KNOW WHAT’S IN PLACE TO PROTECT YOU.

✓✓BE A SMART PARKER.

Visit your campus safety center or security office to find out what programs are in place, such as blue light emergency phone stations, campus safety apps for your phone, and campus escort services which provide campus police and/or student volunteers who will walk or drive you safely to your destination, day or night.

2

✓✓STAY ALERT. It’s important to become familiar with your school campus map and stay on well-lit paths when walking outside in the evening. Don’t become distracted by headphones or your cell phone.

Female students should vet a school’s safety performance prior to applying.

Lock your doors and roll up your windows – even if you’re leaving your car for just a short time. It’s also important to find parking in a well-lit area, keeping in mind that it may be bright outside when you first park your car, but dark when you’re ready to leave.

4

✓✓USE PRIVACY SETTINGS. In today’s world, geotagging and oversharing on social media seems to be the norm. However, these actions along with activating GPS locators on your phone are not safe practices, and can make it very easy for criminals to locate you – or know when you’re away from home. Take advantage of the privacy settings on social media, and be sure to disable GPS tracking options on your phone.

5

✓✓SECURE YOUR BELONGINGS. It’s important to take precautions to keep your valuables locked up and out of site. For example, use a drawer that allows you to lock your laptop away in your desk, or purchase a small safe for your valuables.

6

✓✓LEARN HOW TO DEFEND YOURSELF. Many college campuses offer self-defense classes, so think about inviting friends to join you!

Safe on Campus

Essential Info Under the Jeanne Clery Act, schools that receive federal student aid are required to share information about crime on and around their campuses.

Studies show that one in 10 female undergraduates may find their personal safety compromised at one point.

Parents and prospective students can look at an institution's annual security report, which should be available on the school's website.

lifestyle

Behind The Scenes of the College Blogger Lifestyle I TAKE PHOTOS OF EVERYTHING.

I AM BLOGGING, NOT WORKING ON HOMEWORK. Blogging is a lot of work, it’s not “silly”, and it’s not for everyone. If you don’t like taking photos, editing posts and photos and interacting and engaging with readers, then you’ll probably have a hard time building a community. I strive to make our blog approachable and relatable while also staying professional and put together. It really is a balancing act.

Gabby

Still-lifes are where I thrive! I love interesting angles, bright colors, and the beauty of everyday life.

Every once in a while, you may feel awkward capturing your meal on snapchat, but I have moved so far beyond feeling awkward. It’s super easy for me to take 40 photos of my food in a crowded restaurant until my food isn’t even hot anymore.

IT’S HARD EXPLAINING THE CONNECTION BETWEEN CHEMISTRY AND THIS BLOG. I mean the answer is simple, however a lot of people still don’t understand that there is minimal connection between my major and the blog. I may not be majoring in advertising, marketing, or journalism; but that doesn’t mean I don’t find social media absolutely fascinating. Most of the time, I am writing these posts to forget about acid-base problems and the molecular pathways of epithelial cells.

COLLEGE BLOGGERS NEED BALANCE. It sucks saying no to campaigns and blogging opportunities, but my grades thank me for taking a step back. Blogging is great, don’t get me wrong, and it definitely has its perks and fun times; but it is a lot of work. College bloggers are so dang impressive. As a collective, we are churning out great content, getting killer jobs and internship opportunities, nailing it in academics, and looking darn good while doing it. 8 HER GUIDE TO AMERICA’S BEST COLLEGES

3 Your body will change.

5 THINGS 1 Now is the time to nerd out about whatever you’re passionate about. People will tell you that your professors are the experts of their fields. If you’re going to any accredited institution of higher learning, your professor has their Ph.D. and spent 5+ years of their life tirelessly trying to figure out something no one else ever had. But, why would you wait until graduate school to explore these passions? Sure, you need some basic understanding that will come from your undergraduate course work, but what about those random hobbies that you love?

Get passionate about your life. It helps so much especially when you are in a random 100-level history or math class that you could care less about and have no motivation to continue to listen to your TA ramble on. It helps to see the bigger picture and to be passionate about getting there. 1 0 HER GUIDE TO AMERICA’S BEST COLLEGES

to know before your first semester of college. Brought to you by

2 There will be people that you would never talk to again after this time, even if now they are your best friends. You’re going to change, and that’s seriously the greatest thing. But, there are going to be people who aren’t ready to make these changes with you and that’s going to make it hard to advance that relationship. True friendships withstand time and will go back to normal after minutes of complaining about yet another contestant you loved that got sent home on the Bachelor.

You might not necessarily gain weight, even though I definitely did. It’s okay if you do, but just be prepared to work hard to get it off! Some of my friends actually lost weight. You see the thing is: people handle the first semester of stress and new experiences very differently. I didn’t spend a lick of time in the library my entire first semester; and somehow managed to study in my room where literally all my snacks are. I would definitely recommend the “out of sight, out of mind” method or keeping only healthy snacks around like fruits and veggies.

4 Enjoy your time in the dorms. If there was one thing I would have wanted to change or do better in my first two years of college, it would be talking to the people on my floor, on the other side of my hall, and in my building. My roommates, suitemates, and hallmates were in my scholarship my first year. I spent 6 weeks with them the summer before our first year; meaning we were all super tight by the end of it. I was pretty solid on the friend group thing going into school and got a little too comfortable.

5 Live in the moment, but document it! Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and your phone in general are a blessing and a curse. I can’t tell you how many meals I’ve been to where everyone at the table is scrolling through their feeds. Get off your phones! This will strengthen friendships and give a greater appreciation for the time you’re spending with people.

I take so many photos now, but I also know the balance of capturing the photos and enjoying the moments. Find your balance; you’ll thank yourself later. 2017 / 18

How to Get Enough Sleep in College

6 SLEEP TIPS TO RAMP UP COLLEGE LEARNING

Rated #12 in Florida 2016-2017 Women’s Choice Award

Brought to you by

✓✓1. CREATE A SLEEP SCHEDULE.

✓✓4. NAPS.

Set your alarm for going to bed. “We have an internal body clock that wants to stay on schedule. If you vary your sleep time by too many hours, you can throw off your rhythm such that it becomes hard to fall asleep when you want.”

Naps and college appear to go handin-hand. But only nap if you must so you don’t interfere with your sleep routine at night. Keep naps to around 20 minutes and take them before 3 p.m. if possible.

✓✓5. DROWN OUT THE DISTRACTIONS.

✓✓2. EXERCISE. It’s important throughout life but even more so during your college career. You don’t want to gain the dreaded freshman 15, right? Try to exercise at least two hours before bed – even if it’s only for a half hour walk. This will give your body time to unwind before you go to sleep.

✓✓3. CONTROL YOUR CAFFEINE INTAKE. Between schoolwork and socializing, it’s easy to feel run down. Having a caffeine boost may help you get through your day, but try to enjoy your last coffee by 2p.m. And, if you need an energy lift later in the day, go for a brisk walk to revive yourself.

Since you’re sharing a small space with a roommate, pack earplugs and a sleep mask before you leave home. These will help drown out noise and any light if your roommate stays up later than you.

The electronic light of computers, tablets and television stimulate the brain. Turning off electronics at least 30 minutes before bed helps your brain power down and prepare for sleep. Setting and maintaining (okay, mostly maintaining) some sort of sleep schedule will help you keep up with the academic and social demands of college life. 2017 / 18

A College Girl’s Guide to Slaying Finals This may be the single week of the semester that could potentially send you into multiple mental breakdowns, but you can rock it…

Cook something tasty.

Schedule your life.

Take breaks.

Treat yo’ self.

One of my favorite things to do since moving off campus is cooking. It’s so calming and grocery shopping makes me feel less of a child. Your brain is going to need all the glucose it can get to power through exams.

Okay, so this may seem a little bit over the top for most people, but I promise this alleviates some of the normalized stress that I would otherwise drown in. I schedule my sleep, studying, meals, and free time.

Make your study fun.

No one wants to look at boring and bleak practice problems and note cards. It’s generic and will probably have you falling asleep at noon. I love having all of my study materials in color. I write out my biochemistry mechanisms and summarize my class notes on printer paper in complementary color combinations.

Fun Fact: color is good for memory. Brought to you by

1 2 HER GUIDE TO AMERICA’S BEST COLLEGES

Yes, it is 100% necessary to do something close to being fun at multiple points throughout the week. It can be as simple as face masks and old Disney movies with your roommates or a Zumba class followed by lunch with a classmate to discuss non-class things #friendship. 2017 / 18

You’ve made it through to the end and it’s time to pack up your textbooks and temporarily forget it all starts again in a couple of weeks. To make this break even sweeter, I recommend setting a goal or making a promise to yourself at the beginning of the week for a way to treat yourself at the end of the week.

shopping

A College Girl’s Guide to Grocery Shopping! ✓✓PLAN OUT YOUR MEALS. Now, this is more important than I actually thought at first, but I make a schedule of meals and all the things that I need to make, including the technical items like aluminum foil.

✓✓MAKE A MORNING OUT OF IT! I will only grocery shop earlier in the morning on Saturday or Sunday. Saturdays around 8.30 or 9 a.m. are the best. I’d also recommend eating a nice breakfast beforehand, in order to avoid grocery shopping while hungry.

Brought to you by

✓✓SHOP WITH FRIENDS. I seriously suggest grocery shopping with friends. I find that I spend a lot less money when I’m shopping with my gal pals and I’m pressured to be healthier. You can share recipes and brands, and sometimes we’ve shared deals like BOGO offers and things, because normally I would never need two 8 packs of yogurt.

✓✓MAXIMIZE ON FILLING ITEMS. As a broke student, I love to get the biggest bank for my buck. Whether that’s from stocking up on cheap essentials like potatoes, rice, beans, etc. and using these as main dishes to only buying meat/fish that’s on sale for a good price, there are a ton of ways to mix up your diet while still staying on budget and not wasting food.

✓✓PICK ONE SPLURGE ITEM. I find that in order to limit what ends up in my cart and to make sure I’m having plenty of money to spend on fresh fruits and veggies, I’ll limit myself to one or two splurge items – anything with over 10g of sugar and over $5 dollars that isn’t a meat or entrée.

✓✓CHECK STORE CATALOGS.

You can save so many dollars and cents just by being sure to check what items are on sale and maybe even coming up with a pattern for when things typically go on sale.

writing

5 TIPS for writing an effective college essay.

1

Consider your audience and purpose.

As you brainstorm ideas for your essay topic, one of the first things to consider is why you are writing and who your readers are. You are informing, persuading, and hopefully entertaining college admissions officers who will ultimately determine your admission to college.

2

Focus on your strengths.

When brainstorming ideas, list your most admirable personality traits. Next consider experiences that showcase some of these qualities. Narrow your scope and try to develop one trait or experience. Remember that the goal is to show you are a dynamic, wellrounded student who would make a great addition to their university. 1 4 HER GUIDE TO AMERICA’S BEST COLLEGES

3

Develop your voice and style.

When writing a personal essay, it’s important to draw the reader in with scene setting adjectives, carefully selected verbs, and specific details. The more vivid and specific you are, the more impact you will have on the admissions officer. Your word choice, sentence structure, and style will distinguish you from other applicants.

4

Take a compositional risk.

A compositional risk is a moment where the writer draws on humor, makes an unlikely comparison, or does something unexpected in subject or structure. An effective risk will enhance the reader’s understanding of the text—it should not offend, confuse, or distract your audience. This can improve your overall score. 2017 / 18

5

Listen to your English teacher. Your essay is a testament of your capabilities as a writer. Ask yourself these questions: Do you have an attention-grabbing opening? Do your body paragraphs unfold in a logical sequence? Are there transition sentences between and at the start of paragraphs to connect your ideas? Do you have a closing that brings all your ideas together? Have you proofread and corrected any spelling or mechanical errors?

The goal is to show you are a dynamic, well-rounded student who would make a great addition to their university.

essentials RAINGEAR Regardless of whether you go to school in Florida or in the Midwest, one thing’s for certain. It will rain. There’s nothing worse than sitting through a 75-minute lecture looking, feeling, and smelling like a wet dog.

So get a good raincoat, umbrella, and rain boots and walk to class dry + in style.

Essential College Items

Top picks for essential college pieces! They have the power to make your next four years at college just that much better. SHEETS

A BACKPACK

Sleep is so important in college, especially after a long day of classes and studying. That’s why I try to make my bed as comfy as possible. Sheets are one of those essential college pieces that many people don’t give much thought to.

I was that girl in middle school and early high school who just carried all her stuff in a cute Vera Bradley tote. And by stuff, I mean “one notebook and stylish pink plastic pencil case.” BUT, the times have changed. And trendy sparkly notebooks have been replaced with expensive computers, lots of books, and an agenda.

You’re going to NEED a sturdy backpack to get you through college!

Invest in a good one in your freshman year, and it’ll last you through walks to class, weekend lock-ins in the library, and trips to and from home. Brought to you by

COFFEE MAKER This might not apply to you if you don’t love (or need) coffee as much as I do, but for me my mini Keurig is one of my top essential college items. I love making coffee and tea in my dorm while I do my readings for class.

It saves me so much money at the campus Starbucks. Plus, Keurigs are great for heating up water to make rice, mac + cheese, or oatmeal!

Finding the Right Internship

2018

Women’s Choice Award® Best Companies to Work For

3 Graduate College

Start Your Career

✓✓THE WHY:

When you’re ready to start your career, what you choose to do and where you choose to do it is just as important.

An internship is an invaluable life experience. From gaining knowledge about the working world to connecting with mentors, an internship will help to inspire career choices and teach you important skills. At the end of an internship you may discover that your dream job was exactly as you had hoped – or vice versa, in which case you can alter your career path with little to no adverse affects.

Lucky for you, we’ve done the research for you. The following companies have earned the Women’s Choice Award for Best Companies to Work For.

✓✓THE HOW: Finding the right internship starts with determining which fields are potential career paths for you. From there, you’ll want to do your research. Ask your high school counselor and teachers for help. Check with advisors, friends and family members to see if they know someone who works in a field that interests you. If you already have your eyes set on a particular company or organization, contact them to see if they offer summer internships and how to go about applying. And last but certainly not least, use the internet. You’ll want to search for local businesses that are of interest to you, and then reach out to determine if they offer internship programs.

✓✓BIG or SMALL: You may have dreams of working at a large company, but don’t shy away from small companies. Many small companies may be willing to open

up a summer internship specifically for you, as they can probably use the extra help. But more importantly, you may gain more experience in a small company since employees wear many hats and must all contribute to the goals. It’ll also be much more likely that you’d participate in important conversations and projects, which will give you incredible work experience.

✓✓PAID or UNPAID: As for the paid or unpaid internship question, well, that’s up to you and possibly just the luck of the draw. But regardless of pay (or lack thereof!), the experience you gain will far outweigh any monetary reward so focus on finding the best experience for your career goals… and if they pay you, that’s just an added perk!

Major in STEM,

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MA Young Scientist Spotlight: At the age of 17, Deepika Kurup is a scientist, an inventor, a clean water advocate and the recipient of several innovation awards. She created a solar-powered water purification system designed to provide millions of people in the developing world with access to portable drinking water. If Deepika can do it, why can’t you?

There are so many reasons why you should care about a career in STEM. Not only is it interesting and rewarding, there are many people who are willing to help and guide you through making the right choices in your career. Key considerations when choosing a STEM school: 1. Are there resources and programs in place to help you not just survive but thrive as a STEM major? 2. Are there hands-on learning opportunities such as internships and apprenticeships? 3. Is the structure of your STEM program aligned with your learning style? Regardless of difficulties that you may encounter, mentors can serve as motivation to push you towards a bright future in STEM. Opportunity secured my decision to attend University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and my experiences over the past three years have reassured me that I made the right choice. The Meyerhoff Scholarship Program, the Center for Women in Technology, and the Honors College are some of the programs that have guided my growth academically, professionally, and mentally. I have worked all over the country and made a larger impact at my school and in my community than I could have ever imagined. I love UMBC because the empowering spirit of the school has prepared me to become a leader, not only in my field, but globally as well. - Randi Williams Senior, University of Maryland, Balitmore County

Your College Years: A Smart Investment

YOU LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF. When you get to college on your first day, you get a chance to reinvent yourself. The choices you make will tell you about who you are. You’ll discover how you perform under pressure, and what your priorities are. At times you’ll struggle, but you’ll learn how to ask for help from those around you, and how to give help too.

YOU LEARN ABOUT OTHERS. For many, college is a remarkably different environment from where they went to high school. You’re with a new group of people now, and meeting new people is a great way to grow as

ccccccccccc From a young age, you’re told that you need to get good grades in high school in order to go to a good college so that you can get a good job. But is that the only benefit of enrolling? Hardly. There are many more benefits to the college experience than simply learning job skills. Your college years are a time when you learn about yourself, new cultures, new people, and how to navigate unfamiliar situations. The cost of a college education may seem steep, but it’s an investment that will pay off for years to come, and in ways you might never expect!

cccccccccccccc a person. You’ll hear different perspectives and meet people with values and interests that vary wildly from yours – but you’ll also find common ground. Best of all, the friendships you make in college are unique and likely to last a lifetime. And after graduation, 2 2 HER GUIDE TO AMERICA’S BEST COLLEGES

2017 / 18

many of your friends will likely work in a similar field and can help you immensely when you start your career.

YOU WILL FARE BETTER IN THE JOB MARKET. According to a Pew Research Center report published in 2014, college educated millennials have lower unemployment rates than their less educated peers. They’re also more likely to be satisfied with their jobs. Additionally, the study reported that 9 out of 10 college grads say that college has been worth the investment. The same study found that the gap in earnings between college grads and those without degrees has continued to increase steadily over the past three decades.

In short, don’t underestimate what college can do for you! You get out what you put in so make the best of it! You’ll be grateful for the things you learn, the friendships you make and the skills that carry you through your career. Brought to you by
