RELATION REFORM

Zitong Wang Bachelor of engineering Tongji University Applying for University College London Urban Design MArch 2021 entry

Relation reform

Motivation

City is the most complex system that condenses the civilization of human in a long period of time. Beneath those streets and buildings, the bidirectional relation that how people adapt themselves to the built environment and how they reform the physical space to support their lifestyle deeply fascinate me. Addressing different context and situations is the most fundamental and challenging element of urban design. With the development of new technologies, transportation, communication, entertainment, and other aspects of life have completely changed. Today’s designs may not necessarily make sense for future; therefore, I continuously remind myself to think about new possibilities and how to respond to future potential problems like tougher nature environment, lack of resources, dilemma between development and history and higher density. I believe the course in Your university can provide me lots of opportunity to learn and practice in relative field. To me, urban design is not only about objectives, but also to create a model that resolves current issues and has the potential to solve future problems too. Figuring out the relations and dilemma between different stake holders and various element, I can use spatial design as a tool to reform the relationship as a coordinator or a harmonizer. I believe that advanced training at your university will endow me with a broader vision on what the urban design in the future will be like, with which I can make more contribution to make the city a better place for living.

Mapping--Old Town in Modern Center

Oeigin of Shanghai Lao Cheng Xiang which means the old town is the very beginning of Shanghai. The old town was built in 1250s in Song dynasty.

City Center--People Square The traditional City center with Goverment of Shanghai, Several museums shopping malls and large open space here.

Old city center

Became residential area

Typical structure

The texture now formed in 20th century when people from all other province came to Shanghai seeking for opportunity and escape the war. They built those high-density housing area and lived there till today.

Isolated area Finacial Center--Lu Jiazui The lately developed city center mainly composed by finacial company and high-rise of CBD.

Historical Origin The ancient Shanghai center hundreds. The residential cluster last century. A old town being left behind.

Contrast with surrounding

Since the rapid development, the old town is very sepertated and isolated from the surrounding. In terms of development intensity, the old residentia area is obviously lower. The shopping mall, hotel and other high-rise is shows a modern and public style of city life which is compeletly diferent from the old town.

Feature in the past

People from all the country came here bring various culture.

independent society with different kind of commercial activities.

residents have to share some functions since limited space

The entrance is hard to find and the inside space is tortuous

The buildinglack of maintaining.

Poor living condition now

The space is limited both for household and for public function.

Design elements for operation

Strategy——public center off the ground

In original context, public was limited because lack of space. So we make use of the balcony to form a new kind of public space off the ground.

Public function can be attached to the balcony and balconys can be connected by corridors. Conbined with the original street, we could form a public center shared by many levels.

Plan

Detailed scene

The Street was redesigned to become a new center of public space and activities attached to balcony, corridor and yards. The reform of public system conld be attractive for both residents and visitors.

The corridors connect some house to form a compeletely different way for crossing and wandering. The original path on the ground can be used for rush through, this new path above can be use for leisure

Rendering

New way to form public space

New system break the isolation

The isolation of old town is mainly caused by the poor living condition and lack of public space. Since historical resaon, the original context is really hard to plant in any aditional space for pblic activities. The public space off the grond offers a new option to creat more space for public so that the context of the old town can be adapt to the urban life now. Public space are connected to each other and form a street oriented pblic space system. With the original facility on the street and the entrances attached to the street, the new system can enhance the ties between communities. Also a new conbination between urban life and old town can be formed to eliminate the solid boundary and the isolation.

living in an afloat city dosen't mean cutting all ties with the land. Many resouces still need to be ported by ship. Though the related technology still needs further discover, this design is trying to inspire human to change their tradition view to the city since the rapid change of nature enviroment.

We tried to weaken the boundary between city life and nature by making the bridge transparet and vanishing.

The shape of our bridge comes from a concrete box eroded by runing river and the steel structure inside is exposed.

On both end of the bridge, the space is divided into two floors and several box for restaurant, shops, cafe and many other functions. The core tube contains lifts and elevaters connect the bridge with ground and surrounding. The space is devided by simple walls in this part to provide a wider space forcitizens. Functions as performing, exhibition can be placed here. In the middle part of the whole bridge is a very open space for ped and viewing.

Physical Model

The citizens of Cairo can not only enjioy the amazing scene of Nile River but also feel the breeze and hear the birds singing when crossing the bridge.

Night view

At night, the central part of the bridge is dark so that it can merge into the nature. The neon light in the city can be a beautiful background creating an amazing night scence for the pedestrain to enjoy.

With the help of 3D print, We made a Physical model of 1:500 to presnet the detailed configuration.

Concept drawing

Sports used to be limited inside the stadium. However sports can happen everywhere with out boundary. Conbining the sports field with roads, walls and other elemets, the city will be a huge stadim for everyone to play anywhere.

Physical model

The streamlined design of stadium corridor represents the experience of the sports. It also provide space for specaial like rock climbing and cycling

Main Stadium The main stadium breaks the shape of the original stadium. One side of the stadium is opened. The two mobile viewing platforms and the LIQUID crystal floor inside can freely combine the functions of the stadium, breaking the limits of funcation brought by stadium. The viewing platforms at the edge was lifted up to weaken the sense of boundary .

25

Water Sports Valley The water sprots center is placed in a relativly open stadium which has a shape of valley. On one side of the valley, there are seats for audience and tunne1 for players. On the other side, it's a platform for cable car stop. The cable car line go through the whole stadium and passengers can also see the game in the car since the car has two sloping glass window.
