WOODBERRY FOREST
Sports Camp Woodberry Forest Sports Camp offers sports-loving boys between the ages of ten and thirteen a special experience. Fourteen-year-olds entering the eighth grade are eligible. Rising ninth graders are not eligible. Boys of all levels of skill and ability who are interested in learning a variety of team and individual sports will enjoy the three-week camp. We work on developing skills in a friendly, supportive atmosphere where everyone finds encouragement. Our camp covers most summer sports, and small-group instruction ensures individual attention for each boy. This camp is for the boy who wants to play sports all day long! His keen interest in sports is the key to his enjoyment of the lively atmosphere of Woodberry Forest Sports Camp. As you look through the 2013 camp scrapbook, pay careful attention to the faces of the campers. More than anything else, these faces tell the story of Sports Camp. We hope to instill in boys a sense of healthy competition, fair play, and teamwork. Yet the value of the camp extends beyond skills learned on the playing fields. Your son will develop the confidence to take risks and the ability to lead others. We are careful to select counselors who we feel will be excellent role models for impressionable young minds. Campers will be exposed to sports that may be new to them. The introduction to these new activities gives the camper a broader knowledge of sports in general, and he will return home with new skills and improvement in all sports. 2

A Boy’s Prayer by William Dewitt Hyde
Give me clean hands, clean words, and clean thoughts; Help me to stand for the hard right against the easy wrong; Save me from habits that harm; Teach me to work as hard and play as fair in thy sight alone as if all the world saw; Forgive me when I am unkind, and help me to forgive those who are unkind to me; Keep me ready to help others at some cost to myself; Send me chances to do a little good every day, and so grow more like Christ. Camp Philosophy Woodberry Forest Sports Camp began in 1967 under the direction of Red and Cathy Caughron, who believed that helping young men develop into adulthood required healthy exercise, good teaching, supervision from older role models — and a large measure of fun! These are all still the goals of Woodberry Forest Sports Camp. Above all else, our camp emphasizes sportsmanship. It is extremely important for young athletes to learn how to win with grace and lose with dignity. While today’s society provides few examples of good sportsmanship for children, we take sportsmanship very seriously and strive to provide ample opportunity for campers to display their sportsmanship throughout the camp session. We believe that the primary value of sports is their contribution to a boy’s moral and physical growth, and we base all our planning on that conviction.

Team Sports Each camper is placed on a team when he arrives at camp. Interaction in a team environment helps the camper become comfortable early on in a small group. The teams compete with each other throughout the sessions in football, softball, lacrosse, soccer, floor hockey, basketball, and handball, ending with championship games during the last week of camp. The boys learn to work together and live together as a team comprising boys of all ages. This team experience allows the camper to not only try new sports with which he may be unfamiliar, but also to teach his teammates about sports in which he excels.

Counselors and Campers We select our counselors carefully for their leadership qualities, athletic skills, and rapport with younger boys. Most of our counselors are graduates or current students of Woodberry Forest. We are also fortunate to have former campers who want to give back some of their good times to the new campers. These fine young men will become your son’s mentors and friends. The warm, good-natured personal relationships between counselors and campers are perhaps the most meaningful part of the camping experience.
