The Game: A Woodberry Classic

EVERY BOY TAKES PART IN THE FALL’S BIGGEST EVENT!

We call it simply “The Game.” It’s Woodberry Forest and Episcopal High School, going head to head in an epic November football battle that’s the oldest high school rivalry in the South. This year, the 111th game, the Tigers triumphed, 21–12, bringing home our fourth consecutive victory and capping a week that gripped Woodberry in pre-game fever! On Sunday before the game, new boys and their mentors built torches for igniting Friday night’s 60-foot bonfire. Once it was blazing, the cheerleaders led wildly costumed students and hundreds of spectators in cheers to pump up the team for the next day. On Game day, the entire school traveled to Episcopal. The boys sat together, screaming for the Tigers, their Woodberry ties painting the stands a distinctive black and orange. Next year? The Maroon will be in our house! GO, TIGERS! (TURN THE PAGE FOR A FILM ROLL FROM THIS YEAR’S GAME.)

Many Woodberry boys enjoy the drama program, but not everyone wants to be on stage. Others work behind the scenes, helping to stage dramatic productions that amaze local audiences. We host three main-stage plays each year that get lots of boys involved. Some use power tools to build elaborate sets in our woodworking shop. Others design and run the sound and lights, adding special effects — including fog and pyrotechnics — whenever they can. Their favorite part of the plays? Probably the girls who come to campus to participate! Thanks to many helping hands, Lend Me a Tenor was a big hit this fall.

THE GAME 2011

Go Ahead, Try A New Sport! . . . OR GET MORE PLAYING TIME

If you’re nervous about playing time or being cut, you should know that Woodberry has thirty-three teams ranging from bengal to varsity. There are five different basketball teams alone! Woodberry gives you the chance to try a new sport or to find a team that best matches your ability. Here’s what some winterteam athletes have to say about Woodberry athletics . . . .

“I picked squash because my father has always wanted me to play. I decided to try it out and soon discovered that I loved the game.” -Whit Hobbs ’14 football, squash, lacrosse

Whit TEACHER FEATURE

Dr. David Smith Dr. Smith — our well-dressed chaplain, teacher, coach, and color commentator for football games — always has an open door on Community Street. Or stop by to visit him, his wife, Jane, and dog, Jake, on Terry dorm, and you’re likely to be offered a snack. Whether you meet him on the golf course or in the dining room, Dr. Smith is always cheerful and friendly — and he cares.

“Sports are a rewarding part of Woodberry — I got to try swimming as a school sport and now swim varsity. Unless you have a serious history with something, you should consider trying something you are interested in, even if you don’t have a background in it.” Luke Merrik ’14 soccer, swimming, spring swimming

Luke

Why do you preach without notes and in front of the pulpit? For me, speaking in chapel is more of a conversation than a lecture. I don’t want anything to come between the boys and me. How do you reach students of different faiths? God is bigger than any religious tradition. Compassion, humility, love, and selflessness are not restricted to one religion or culture. It’s important not to be “preachy” — everyone loves to hear good stories! You wear many hats here. What is your favorite non-chaplain role? Just as parents love all their children equally, I love everything I do here. I have a hard time calling it work! What is your favorite activity with your advisees? Jane and I enjoy having our five advisees come to our home for good food and conversation. They love it when we light the grill! 2• DECEMBER 2011 • TIGER TALES

Hands-on History Have you ever studied a 200-year-old book while holding it in your hands? Students in Dr. Matt Boesen’s U.S. history class did just that. They read excerpts from Thomas Jefferson’s Notes on the State of Virginia — the only book published by our third president — in the classroom, then visited the library to handle (with special gloves) the real thing: a 1784 first edition donated by a Woodberry alumnus. STUDENT SNAPSHOT

Wilson Kuhnel Wilson, a sixth-former (senior) from Roanoke, Virginia, is a prefect and talented musician who runs varsity cross country and track, leads freshman Bible study, and will soon become an Eagle scout. In 2010 he spent a trimester as an exchange student in South Africa. A head editor of the Talon literary magazine, he played Curly in last year’s production of Oklahoma! Wilson was awarded Woodberry’s prestigious Noland Fellowship, which funded his trip to Germany last summer to learn about its language and music.

Christmas at the Forest

Woodberry’s Christmas service is a December highlight. St. Andrew’s Chapel is illuminated by candles (everyone carries one), and there are Christmas carols, readings, and festive decorations made by the students. Woodberry musicians practice all fall for the winter music concert, which brings parents and friends to campus, signaling that the well-deserved holiday break is close at hand. STUDY TIP

Making Good Choices

When taking a multiple choice test, try these tips: 1) Underline key words in the question. 2) Cross off choices you know are wrong. 3) Use the key words to pick the right answer. 4) If you aren’t sure of the answer, skip the question and return later. Something else in the test might trigger your memory! This tip comes from Woodberry’s Academic Development Center. Check out the ADC blog at wfsadc.wordpress.com! WOODBERRY FOREST SCHOOL

What was your favorite part of your trip to Germany? Hearing Europe’s greatest choirs and ensembles at Salzburg’s music festival. What advice would you give someone interested in becoming a Noland fellow? Listen to your passions and build your trip around them. You will have no trouble making your project proposal jump off the page. What prompted you to learn multiple languages? My grandfather wanted me to learn German out of pride in our family heritage. I suppose t hat sparked me to learn French and Latin too. What is the best part of your day? Playing Chopin down at the Walker Center or hanging with my friends. What do you like to eat at the Fir Tree? Vanilla milkshake, fries, and mozzarella sticks. TIGER TALES • DECEMBER 2011 • 3
