House building, industrial development, energy generation projects and flooding are common themes in the media of late. In the last few weeks the national media has summarised these various issues in the context of rural land use, localism and a planning system which may deliver much to Woodbury Parish in the longer term. However, it is the short term application of government policies which concerns many parishioners, and in Woodbury there is an avalanche of issues. This month's Woodbury News covers a number of projects from Devon's largest waste treatment facility within the parish, a large solar energy array, and more new housing and industrial development. At the same time the residents of Exton have found out that there are insufficient funds to fully rectify their flood problems. What can YOU do about this? Firstly consider becoming a Parish Councillor. Woodbury Parish Council are advertising for two new councillors; one for Exton Ward and one for Woodbury Ward. The parish councillor's work is vital to the future shape and running of the parish and helping to address some of these issues. Secondly, think about offering your services to one of the many organisations in the village looking for voluntary help; there are a number of opportunities advertised in this month's Woodbury News. Thirdly, take time to review what is happening in your ward, and participate in the consultations and meetings that are taking place this month. It's 100 years since the start of the Great War 1914-18. Plans are being formed for a commemoration on Sunday 3 August, ahead of Monday 4 August, the day war was declared. Gill Selley is trying to compile a history of the men of the parish who fought during WW1 and would welcome any help. With such an important anniversary, it is certainly a good year to research your own family's Great War heroes too. COVER PHOTO This photo taken from Woodbury Castle looks over Woodbury Wood towards Woodbury and to Exton beyond to the River Exe. It will be one of the banner photos on the new Woodbury News Website www.woodburynews.co.uk. The new website goes live in early February, and will feature each month's Woodbury News in full colour format. The site is responsive which means that on-line readers will be able to browse the magazine from most devices including smartphones. New features may be added to the website in due course. FoSS (FRIENDS OF ST SWITHUN’S) By the time of publication FoSS will have had its 10th year anniversary concert and supper in Church on 25 January. The first Foss meeting was held on Burns night 2004, when it was decided that a group of interested villagers, both Church and non Church members, should form a friends group to raise funds to maintain and improve the fabric of St Swithun’s, to enable it to be used more widely. Jill Whitten was the first Chair and piloted through the difficult refurbishment process. Eventually FoSS succeeded in its aim of providing toilets, kitchen facilities and more open space. It was very gratifying to note that the Church was the choice for 11 couples with local connections to hold their weddings in 2013. It is hoped that FoSS will have the continued support of the wider community for the Spring Concert with Exeter School Chamber Choir supporting village choirs on Friday 25 April, and the afternoon tea on 12 July. WOMEN’S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER Friday 7 March, 1.30pm at St Swithun’s This year’s event has been prepared by the Christian women of Egypt and is entitled Streams in the Desert. The speaker will be Reverend Karen Spray of St Swithun’s. Over 3 million people worldwide will be praying and worshipping together during this annual day of prayer, which in Woodbury is jointly celebrated by St Swithun’s and Christ Church. The service will finish in time for children to be collected from school. ST SWITHUN’S LYCH GATE DATES - 9.00-11.00 1 February. 1 March. 5 April. 3 May. WOODBURY CRICKET CLUB The Cricket Club AGM will be held on Wednesday 26 February in the dining room at the White Hart Woodbury starting at 7.30pm. All are welcome to attend. Although the Vlub welcomes new members wherever they live, we are particularly keen for those who live in the village to come along and find out more about their local cricket club. There are opportunities for those keen to play or contribute to the club through using financial, admin, coaching, umpiring or scoring skills. We are a vibrant club which wants to remain very much part of the local community. We run a league team who play on Saturdays throughout the season in the F division of the Devon Cricket League. This provides a reasonable standard of cricket played in a friendly atmosphere but with a competitive edge. We also provide regular 20/20 matches on mid week evenings and Sunday afternoon matches approximately twice a month. There are therefore plenty of opportunities to play cricket whatever your standard. Playing membership is £35 and social membership of the club is also available at £10, which enables you to watch the cricket in beautiful surroundings while making use of the bar. We also run three junior teams. Unfortunately there is now a waiting list for junior cricket as we are short of helpers on Friday nights. If you can help out or want to add your child’s name to the waiting list then please contact Kevin Miller Tel 01395 232995 kevinmiller07@btinternet.com New playing and social memberships are always welcome and we would be glad to see you at the AGM. THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION IN THE PARISH OF EBFORD, EXTON, WOODBURY AND WOODBURY SALTERTON Plans are being formed to commemorate the anniversary of the outbreak of the Great War 1914-1918 in August. There will be an exhibition and displays of life and times in the parish at the beginning of the century and leading up to 1914-1918 and time after the finish of the war, followed by a concert in the Village Hall in the evening on Monday 4 August, the day war was declared. Fuller details in future Woodbury News. Please save the dates! FOR YOUR TODAY THEY GAVE THEIR TOMORROW Following discussions at the recent Parish Council meeting, the Parish Council have arranged to improve the surrounding pathways to the War Memorial on the Green in time for these important events - Ed

8 WOODBURY GARDEN CLUB 14 January A very big thank you to Ken and Margo Crundwell for sharing with us some lovely photographs of Madeira, and especially the Palheiro Gardens. Ken began by showing us some general photographs of Funchal, the capital of Madeira with its backdrop of mountains. Funchal is on the southern coast of Madeira and it is the protection of these mountains and the southerly aspect that gives Funchal its wonderful, all year round, summer climate! Madeira is often referred to as the Garden Isle. Throughout the island you will see exotic flowers and indigenous plants. Ken had photographs of seascapes, towering and sheer cliffs, villages in deep valleys, views of peaks, and of course flowers and plants. All year round you can find flowers and plants in bloom. The Palheiro Gardens are famous not only for the variety of plants that grow there but for the beauty of their setting in the hills to the east of Funchal. The gardens are about 500 metres above sea level. Ken showed us many photographs of plants and flowers and interesting topiary. It was interesting to see photographs of the same garden taken in March and then again in October, with different plants flowering but still as colourful. Madeira is situated north of Tenerife, in the North Atlantic Ocean, and is Portuguese. It was discovered by Portuguese sailors in the 1400s. Madeira is an interesting island with its terracing, its watercourses or levadas, its volcanic origin and landscape. It is also a popular and beautiful holiday island. Ken ended his presentation with some photographs of a garden in Brittany, the Jardin de Ballue. Our next meeting is our AGM on Tuesday 11 February at 7.30pm. WOODBURY TENNIS CLUB A New Year brings new life to all sporting people in Woodbury. We have two newly resurfaced courts in the village at the top of the playing fields. We welcome new members as the Club is a Community Sports Club open to all. The AGM of the Club will take place at 8.00pm in the Church Room on Wednesday 12 February, and it is open to all. The Committee is recommending no change in subscriptions. The Club will be entering two men’s teams and one mixed team in the local leagues for the summer season. Although tennis is deemed to be a summer sport, members of Woodbury play all year with Club sessions on Sunday morning and the Ladies group on Tuesday afternoon. In addition, winter league matches have been played on Saturday mornings, the winter season ending with 6-2 victory. Thanks to team captain James Brown for his organisation. New or returning members are always welcome; please contact Pat Browne (232805).

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

WOODBURY VILLAGE HALL There are six months to go before major building work starts to provide a new kitchen and toilets. The money is coming in, the Committee is very grateful to the Garfield Weston Trust which donated £5000, the Chouhans at Woodbury Post Office who raised £59 from customers using plastic bags, Joy Frampton £70 from a felting course and members of the community who raised £6000 in 2013. Fund-raising is well over half way to the target of £80,000, only £34 000 to go! The Hall has been well used in 2013; rental revenue has increased by 30%, with the occupancy rate at 75%, hence the need for 21st century facilities. The fund-raising committee has organized two events in February, the annual Jumble Sale on Saturday 15th and a Barn Dance on the 22nd (tickets £10 from Rowsells or Chris Lear and going quickly). 200 Club tickets are also available from committee members. Please support these events, money is still required! The December (Christmas) draw took place at Woodbury Village Hall on Monday 9 December and the prizes drawn were as follows: 1st prize £100 – Bowling Club, 2nd prize £60 – David Mansell, 3rd prize £40 – Pam Rose-Casemore, 4th prize £20 – Mary Prince. Congratulations to the prize winners. Woodbury Village Hall recently ran two fund-raising events which have been very successful. The Christmas Grand Draw which was drawn on Saturday 14 December raised £620 and the Committee would like to publicly thank all those very kind people and businesses who donated prizes. We would also like to thank the many people who bought the Draw tickets and congratulate those who won a prize. The Hall also organised the annual Christmas Bingo Night on Saturday 14 December and this raised in the region of £414. Again the Committee would like to thank all those who came along and took part and also those who helped to organise the event. All the proceeds from both events will go towards the Improvement Project, due to be finished by the Autumn. Pat Browne, Treasurer Woodbury Village Hall

10 WOODBURY CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL Big Crib Project In response to an invitation from the Diocese of Exeter Education Team to participate in the ‘Big Crib’ project, members of Woodbury School’s Ethos Group decided to produce a large-scale sculpture of the Holy Family to be displayed at St Swithun’s Church. A number of possibilities were considered, ranging from simple driftwood sculptures draped in fabric to a set of papier mâché figures constructed over wire frames. It was decided, after much deliberation, that a couple of planks sawn from the bole of a large Coastal Redwood tree supplied by Dartmoor Tree Surgeons, would fit the bill. Consequently, based on a simple Photo - The Big Crib sketch outlining the Ethos Group’s design, the planks were transformed into two vaguely human-like forms. Once transported to St Swithun’s, these were securely fastened together to create a pair of standing figures. The faces of Mary and Joseph were then added and finally a swaddling-wrapped infant was placed in Mary’s arms to complete the Holy Family. It is intended that the sculpture will be returned to school, weatherproofed for outdoor display and subsequently erected on a more permanent site on the school grounds. The Ethos Group wishes to thank everyone who made it possible for them to display their Big Crib sculpture at St Swithun’s Church over the Christmas period. They also wish to say a big thank you to Graham Joyce for his help and for donating the timber. The Woodbury News attempts to represent a variety of views within the Community, but does not accept responsibility for anything but Editorial comment. While it may publish unacknowledged material, nothing is included unless the Editor knows the name and address of the author(s).

WOODBURY WOMEN’S INSTITUTE December was a busy month for members of Woodbury WI. It started on the 5th with a splendid Christmas lunch at the Maltsters pub, where a traditional turkey roast with all the trimmings was a firm favourite.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH SPICED WINTER SALAD Serves 6-8 This is delicious any time of year but takes advantage of winter veg. If you are looking for a light and very healthy dish with plenty of flavour this is ideal. It involves little or no cooking so no excuses! Add or subtract different vegetables depending what you have in the fridge but try and include a mixture of colours. It keeps for 4 or 5 days in the fridge and the flavours develop so it is a good dish to come back to for second servings. INGREDIENTS

Five ladies joined the combined choir from all the WIs in Devon, and enjoyed singing carols to an appreciate congregation in Exeter Cathedral on the 10th. At the monthly meeting on the 12th, member Jo Lovejoy, assisted by Barb ara Fewings, showed the ladies how to produce a decoration suitable either for hanging on their front door or as a table centrepiece. It looked easy to do, but the results indicated that some had more artistic skills than others! Photo - Jo Lovejoy and Barbara Fewings

Having won their matches against Whimple and Magnolia WIs, the skittlers continue to practise at the White Hart in anticipation of their next match in the Devon WI league against Sidford WI, whilst others prefer to just enjoy the weekly coffee and chatter.

½ a medium white cabbage shredded 4 carrots grated or in strips(with a potato peeler) 4 sticks of celery thinly sliced 1 red pepper thinly sliced 3 tbs sesame oil (olive oil would do) a generous thumb of ginger finely chopped

2 cloves of garlic crushed 3 tbs of cider/wine vinegar the juice and zest of a lime seasoning ½ -1 finely chopped chilli (optional) 1 tsp sugar (optional) 100g salted peanuts (optional)

METHOD ¨ Fry the garlic and ginger briefly in the sesame oil in a large pan add the white cabbage and stir through for about 4 minutes. ¨ Add all the remaining ingredients stir through for another minute then serve warm or leave to cool and eat later. Note : The ingredients marked ‘optional’ enhance the overall flavour of the dish but can be left out if you want a ‘slimmers’ version of the dish! DECEMBER WEATHER The dry spell from the end of November continued into the first ten days of December at which stage the heavens opened again with almost continuous SW gale and storm force winds through to the end of the month. The ground was already wet from the deluge of October so of course we were quickly into Met Office warnings for floods and falling trees. Rainfall for the month was 186.8mm (7.35ins and 216% of normal) and max/min temperatures were 13 C/1 C. Some nights did not go below 9C and the mouse that lives under the garage wall came out to say hello. Rainfall for the year was 1,004.6mm (39.55ins and 115% of the 10 year norm – but a lot drier than 2012). As I write this in early January the daffodils have pushed up 4 inches. PJH. If you thought that the weather was bad here in Woodbury, Devon, spare a thought for the residents of Woodbury, Minnesota who at the time of writing were experiencing -42C wind chill. Thanks to Jan Owen for the report - Ed

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Cont’d/... At the January Meeting, thirty-three members and six visitors (including some men!) came to hear Myles Bloodsmyth of Exmouth Mussels give a talk entitled In Love with Mussels. Passion, Obsession and happiness on the River Exe. He was accompanied by his brother Jonathan. Myles said that it was a pleasure to spend his daily life on the Rive Exe. He went on to explain how important the river is - a site of Special Scientific Interest and is protected. He talked about how the mussels seed/spawn depending on water temperature, sunlight, day length and clarity of water, usually around April. The young mussels are moved and laid onto mussel beds and left to grow and develop for two years, whereas Scottish mussels tend to be rope grown. He extolled the virtues of River Exe mussels their shell strength, meat colour and size.

WOODBURY SALTERTON NEWS

THANKS From Eunice Brown I cannot let any more time go before I thank the whole of Exton, with special praise to David and Anne Hacking, who set up a rota of drivers to take me for three weeks of radiotherapy. Every day I had a driver from a list of fifteen people, generous with their time, not to mention, food and flowers. Such kindness I received the whole of a difficult time. Patrick and Robin Bricknell would like to thank the many people of Woodbury Salterton for their messages of support following the death of their mother Christine. She will be sorely missed by us and at the village events she regularly supported.

HOLY TRINITY CHURCH, WOODBURY SALTERTON In Memoriam - Michael Davieson The whole village and especially his church family were shocked and saddened at the sudden death of Michael (Mike) Davieson on 14 December. Mike was born in Calcutta on 25 March 1931 and lived his early years in India before coming to England when he was 18 to study Electrical Engineering. After his National Service in the Army with the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers (which included a tour in Malaysia and a brief foray to Egypt during the Suez Crisis) he joined the Central Electricity Generating Board, working with them until his retirement in Photo - Mike Davieson 1992. He married Valerie in 1962 and their three children, Penny, Richard and Sarah, were brought up in Tadworth, Surrey. Wherever Mike lived he was always actively involved with his local church and served as a Churchwarden in Tadworth. When he and Valerie made their home in Woodbury Salterton upon his retirement, he quickly began to support and help our church, Holy Trinity, serving for many years on the PCC, as Churchwarden, on the reading rota and as Sidesman. We have him and Valerie to thank for their long time care of the church building, faithfully unlocking and locking the church each day regardless of the weather. Mike also worked for some years for the Citizens Advice Bureau, helping to sort out people’s problems with practical and no-nonsense advice. Mike and Val celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 2012 with all their family, which includes eight grandchildren – and since then a great grandson. The church was packed for his funeral service on 30 December – a tribute to the esteem and affection in which Mike was held. In the family tribute his son-inlaw referred to him as kind, thoughtful, generous, well respected, organised, logical and with a sense of humour. Valerie and her family would like to thank everyone for their messages of sympathy and offers of help, which have been a great comfort and are very much appreciated.

QUIZ EVENING AT WOODBURY SALTERTON VILLAGE HALL SATURDAY 8 FEBRUARY, 7.30 The entry fee is £5 per person. You can come as an individual and sort out teams on arrival or come as a ready made team. BYO drinks and nibbles.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR From Sylvia Wickenden and Sally Elliott A study of the wild flowers of Woodbury Parish is about to be made available to view on the Woodbury website. It was undertaken over a four year period between 2008 and 2011, and offers a record where none existed before, of the flora to be found along the lane network of the Parish. We hope such a record will widen an appreciation and awareness of the local flora and its range of supporting habitat, and encourage the conservation of both. The survey also provides a basis for future comparisons to be made which is especially relevant to other studies such as those on climate change and land use. Production costs, demand, and funding, will determine whether the study appears in booklet form, and we are currently awaiting advice on these issues.

From Gill Selley SERVICEMEN OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR I am trying to compile a history of the men of the parish who fought during WW1. There are many memorials to those who gave their lives, but those who survived and returned home, often with permanent physical, mental or emotional injuries, are often forgotten. Does anyone in the parish have an ancestor, who was either born or living in the parish of Woodbury (including Ebford) and fought for their country between the years 1914-19? If so, I would be very grateful if you would contact me. I do have the names of several men whose early history I have traced, both those who died and those who survived, but I do not know whether any of their descendants are still living in the parish. If you can help please contact me either by telephone on 01395 233208, or email gselley100@gmail.com. Or alternatively call in and see me at 1 Culvery Close.

MUM AND DAUGHTER JOIN FORCEs WITH THE BLUESBURYS AND MAGNOLIA INCENTIVE

CHRISTMAS 2013 IN WOODBURY SALTERTON Woodbury Salterton C of E School started its Christmas celebrations with a Concert and Nativity Play performed twice in the church. Proceedings started with nine pupils – Evie, Libby, Alice, Amie, Satara, Will, Zak, Daniel and Abigail - playing carols or Christmas pieces on a variety of instruments. The newly formed School Choir sang two items and there were bible readings, congregational carols and a talk by Revd Karen Spray before Class 1 acted the nativity play Busy, busy Bethlehem with the whole school joining in the songs. The Headteacher, Louise Lowes, praised the courage and confidence of the children in performing on a stage in front of large audiences and the teachers who had trained them. A gift was presented to Cyril Squires for doing the lighting and sound system and flowers to Katharine Wheeler for playing the organ and help during the year. Family Service The School led the family service in December with pupils. They acted out a little play explaining the symbolism behind some of our Christmas customs - there was even a father Christmas played by Finlay Webb. Also taking part were Anya Corlett, Libby Windle, Esme Taylor, Alice Rooke, Megan Holt and Emily Taylor. The church Choir sang The Cat and Mouse Carol. Mrs Lowes presented each participant later with a candy cane – a European traditional tree decoration commemorating the shepherds (crook shape). Christingle The School held its Christingle service in church. Revd Karen conducted the service. A collection was taken for The Children’s Society. Carol Singing A fairly small but enthusiastic group, led by members of the church choir led by Debbie Jung, braved the inclement weather to sing carols around the village. Isabelle and William Olney took on the task of knocking on doors to ask for donations for The Children’s Society. The sum of £166.91 was collected. This will be added to the School’s Christingle collection so a total of £221 was sent to the Children’s Society from our village. Church Decoration A big Thank You to those who gave of their time and talents to decorate our church so beautifully for Christmas and to Devon Clinton estates for their gift of the tree. Carol Service The Carol service attracted a large congregation. Rev Chris Cant gave a short address and showed an excerpt about the birth of Christ from the television programme The Bible. Mulled wine and mince pies were served afterwards. The collection was divided between the Church and ShelterBox, which will receive £150. This will go to help those in great need in Syria.

A cheque for £500 was presented to FORCE cancer charity recently, by Laura Godfrey, on behalf of Martin Gill and Mandy Parker of the Magnolia Incentive, a charity which supports Gifted and Talented Young people at Exmouth Community College. Mum Donna, along with husband Phil Godfrey received tremendous support from FORCE, which is based in the RD&E, where Donna received treatment for cancer. Laura, at the time, was studying for her A levels and her brother Daniel, his GCSEs at the ECC. Steve, Ray and the Bluesburys, playing at the Maltsters Arms in Woodbury in December, helped Donna to raise over £300, and at 11.00pm on the same evening, Laura arrived with the cheque for £500, her team’s prize for winning a quiz, whilst dining with the elite group of young people who make up the Magnolia Incentive. Massive thank you to them and all the musicians who played on the night, for free, but mostly to the kind and generous people who donated for such an amazing cause. Thank you also to Matt and Sam of the Maltsters Arms, Bicton Park and Rosie Stoneman of Revive/Fitness First, for donating the main prizes. Next music extravaganza is being organised for June of this year… watch this space...

ROUND AND ABOUT

WOODBURY SALTERTON WOMEN’S INSTITUTE President Jenny Kemp welcomed everyone to the first meeting of 2014. Subscriptions are now due and Gill Bricknell (Treasurer) thanked all who had already paid. Jenny gave a resume of the four resolutions put forward at the Council Meeting. Members had to vote afterwards, in secret, on which of the four they preferred to go forward. A team was decided to represent our WI in the DFWI Quiz. Jenny thanked Graham Gerdes for printing the WI programmes again for us. Plans are well in hand for our celebration of our Diamond Jubilee on Wednesday 19 March at Froginswell. Katharine Wheeler gave an account of her visit to Melbourne, Australia, which included some amusing anecdotes like her visit to the dentist and the cost of Healthcare and Education in Australia. Gill Bricknell thanked her for an entertaining account. The 12 February meeting at 7.30 in the Village Hall will include a talk by Christine Smith on Exeter Street Pastors. The monthly coffee morning at the Diggers’ Rest will be on Thursday 20 February at 11 am.

CONGRATULATIONS To Matthew Alexander Cox and Amanda Jane Wall who were married at St Swithun’s on 21 December, GOLDEN WEDDING Julie and John Maidment celebrated their Golden Wedding with a party for seventy family and friends at East Devon Golf Club on Saturday 21 December. Julie and John would like to thank all their friends in Woodbury for their cards, gifts and kind donations to FORCE, which amounted to £415.00. CAROLS AROUND WOODBURY Carol singing around the village was well supported and raised a total of £858.26 for Save the Children. Many thanks to all the singers and especially the collectors who did a grand job. The Community Choir swelled our numbers again on the Thursday and provided some additional harmonies to enrich our singing. Mulled wine and goodies were supplied by the White Hart on the Tuesday and mulled wine and minced pies were served in the Church Rooms on the Thursday. Michelle and Terry Conneely provided the wine for Thursday as Michelle had a medical appointment and could not provide her usual feast! Our thanks are also due to the families who provided generous donations to add to the house to house collections. WEIGHTWATCHERS RETIREMENT Sandra Huish has been a Weightwatchers Leader for ten years and over the last few years ran a very successful meeting in Woodbury. She retired at Christmas 2013 and the Woodbury meeting has now closed. All the members from this group would like to thank her for her kindness and gentle support in their weight loss journey. Many friendships have been made and thanks to her continued encouragement many members have reached their goal weight. Everyone agrees this meeting was the best one they had ever attended. We shall all miss her and wish her a very happy and healthy retirement.

WOODBURY SALTERTON RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION Woodbury Salterton Planning issues February 2013 Woodbury Salterton residents are in the throes of two major planning issues. One is to the North of the Village at Greendale Barton Business Park where a plan to build an Energy from Waste Plant to handle up to 80,000 tons of waste per year is being proposed within Devon County Council’s “Waste Plan” proposals. To give a perspective to the size of the development, the new incinerator at Marsh Barton is designed to handle 60,000 tons. However the type of system to be used at Greendale Barton has not been determined so it may be incineration by either bio mass, gasification, thermal depolymerisation, plasma Arc gasification, or by Anaerobic digestion, Fermentation or mechanical biological treatment. The Woodbury Salterton Residents’ Association has been aware of the Consultation process for some time and has tried to remove Greendale Barton from the list of possible sites. It is their view that a unit of this magnitude has no place in a rural location. They are also worried with regards to the health and safety aspect of this technology and the implications on the health and welfare of the residents. The other Planning issue is the Consultation being conducted by Greendale Investments into a possible 60 house housing estate on the South side of the village next to the Sages Lea Estate. A consultation drop-in event was held just before Christmas at Woodbury Village Hall by the developers, but the Association felt that further consultation was needed. Therefore the Association has organised an open meeting at Woodbury Salterton Village Hall on Tuesday 21 January at 7.30pm to discuss these two important issues. By the time readers of Woodbury News read this the meeting will have taken place. However if residents wish to be kept informed of the developments to these two issues they can view the latest information on the WSRA website which is woodburysalterton.weebly.com. There is also a website set up by the developers which explains what the proposal is and is asking residents for feedback. Their website is www.sagesleawoodburysalterton.co.uk The Sages Lea Developers number is 01392 363812 and the comment email address is comment@sagesleawoodburysalterton.co.uk Also Devon County Council is organising a drop-in session regarding the Waste Plan at Woodbury Salterton Village hall on Monday 3 February between 3.00 and 7.00. They also have a website which explains the proposals and the ways for residents to make comments. www.devon.gov.uk/dwp2013 Devon CC telephone no is 0845 155 1055 or email wasteplanning@devon.gov.uk

VILLAGES DEVELOPMENT PLAN DOCUMENT LAUNCHED BY EDDC People who live in villages across East Devon are to get the chance to help shape the future development of their community under a consultation exercise launched by EDDC on Friday 17 January. The aim is to produce a Villages Development Plan Document – or DPD – and so villages in East Devon will be considered, plus two semi-rural business parks at Hill Barton and Greendale. Feedback received from the eight-week consultation will be used to create a Villages Plan to complement the East Devon Local Plan for 2006-26, which will shortly be reviewed in detail by a Government Inspector. The final version of the Villages Plan DPD will in turn take into account comments made by the Inspector through his public examination of EDDC’s Local Plan – the district planning blueprint for the next 12 years. The draft is available on EDDC’s website (www.eastdevon.gov.uk/ villagedpd). It goes into a good degree of detail about each village. It also suggests some revisions to the current Built-up Area Boundaries, which ‘ring fence’ the land that may be considered for new building. The closing date for feedback is noon on Monday 10 March and the information received will be used to write a revised document that will go out for a further round of consultation in the summer.

DEVON MOBILE LIBRARY SERVICE CHANGES Every fortnight for many decades, the mobile library stopped at Woodbury Village Car Park, Woodbury Salterton Kennels, Diggers Rest and Ridges Corner and at Exton. The library will visit on 7 and 21 February and 7 March, but from April onwards the mobile library visits will change to monthly. The timings for these monthly visits have yet to be announced by Devon County Council Libraries Service. They will be available soon, and will be published in Woodbury News March Edition.

EXTON LADIES GROUP MEETING January 2014 It was a dry and sunny afternoon for a change when our ladies arrived at the hall for our first meeting of the year. Elsie Wood gave us an enthralling account of life with her husband Brian in Cyprus immediately following their marriage in October 1957. They had both graduated in 1955, Brian from Durham, Hatfield College and Elsie from Teacher Training College. Elsie first taught in a modern school near to her home, with a class of 47 mixed infants. Brian went immediately to do National Service and began training at Catterick so they were able to keep in touch. Subsequently he was sent to Gloucester working on cypher (decoding machines) and later sent to Cyprus at the time when EOKA the Greek Organisation were causing mayhem. During this time the Suez Crisis blew up and as cypher operator he saw the messages flying from one government to another. Just before his demob in September 1957 Brian was offered a job by a plantation company who was looking for an entomologist and although his degree was in Zoology he was considered to be the right person for the job. Elsie and Brian were married in October 1957 and with a quick honeymoon in Derbyshire, they were soon sailing from Southampton to Cyprus as the only passengers on a Fred Olson cargo boat. The customs would only allow them to take £50 with them and so they had to post the rest of their money from the dockside post office to Brian’s parents. They were to have a small furnished house and income of £750 a year. Following a rather rough sea journey, they finally disembarked at Limassol by leaping from a swinging rope ladder to a smaller boat and so to the land, with Elsie wearing her going away outfit. The house and plantation which contained various citrus fruit trees, pecan nuts and grapes was situated on a narrow strip of land, with a road lined with casuarina trees leading to the RAF base at Akrotiri, where Elsie obtained a teaching post. This was to be their home for the next five years. Brian’s work was crop protection and the citrus trees were being ravaged by insects and intensive spraying with chemicals. He was involved in the world wide movement to call a halt to the spraying and take stock of the situation. It was the start of a career journey in which he is still involved. The climate in Cyprus is lovely with hot summers, mild winters and delightful spring and autumn seasons. They quickly developed a beautiful garden with roses, zinnias, various fruits and loofa plants. These do not grow in the sea as is thought by some people, but look rather like cucumber plants, with a fibrous core of a pod.

This item is a summary of the meeting as seen by Woodbury News and not necessarily the views of the Parish, District or County Council. The full minutes of the meeting are available at www.woodburydevon.co.uk.

Editor’s Note : In order to maximise submitted copy and photographs into Woodbury News, it may be necessary to reduce the size of some items. The Editorial team will attempt to do this as carefully as possible.

EXTON LADIES GROUP Cont’d/... They made friends with people from various professions, all about their own age, including some of the air crew personnel who ran the bar for parties and put their rifles in the broom cupboard. Having bought a car, Brian taught Elsie to drive and, although he often fell asleep during her lessons, she did pass the test. Life was very different from England, such as being asked at one restaurant to choose which chicken roosting in the trees that they would like to be cooked. All the local butchers seemed to have one or more fingers missing and the meat was either lamb, goat or fowl. At Christmas having been offered a turkey, they saw it being led on a piece of string into the garden and subsequently slaughtered in the garage. With two large holes each end it looked as if they had used dynamite on the poor thing. Some fresh food in season or frozen was available but milk was always evaporated and to this day Elsie will only drink tea without it. Although life was often very pleasant there were times when they would be reminded that, as a British Colony, there was much resentment from EOKA and if they went out for the evening they would tack onto the back of a military convoy for safety. Holidays were sometimes spent in Famagusta and at the north coast resort of Kyrenia they saw the ruined crusader castles. Just before their daughter Sally was born they had a holiday in Beirut, then up to Baalbeck to see the beautiful Roman temples, now sadly blown to bits. In those days Christians and Muslims lived side by side in peace. In Cyprus Greek Orthodox and Muslim Turks, although living in separate quarters, coexisted quite well. After a time things improved in Cyprus. Greeks and Turks took over and Britain retained sovereignty of the air bases particularly in Akrotiri. Before Elsie and Brian had arrived, a bomb had been exploded in Akrotiri destroying a hanger. When some years later they were revisiting Cyprus they met a young Greek who proudly boasted of planting a bomb many years previously which had destroyed a hanger at the air base. Sally who was then sitting on his lap was promptly sick all over him. “Just desserts”, one might say. It was with great sadness that the young family decided to leave Cyprus and seek pastures new. They sailed back on the Black Prince with several other passengers and had an enjoyable journey home. Before long Brian was offered a new job in Malaysia and they began another stage of their adventurous life. Next month sees our AGM and the beginning of our fifth year as the Exton Ladies Group. If anyone else would like to come and join us they will receive a very warm welcome.

EXTON CAROL SINGING We would like to thank everyone who came to the village carols despite the horrendous weather which prevented us from singing around the outside tree. A large group of people and the Exeter Railway Band enjoyed an evening of carols in the church. During the carols some cars had to be moved off the road which began to flood. At the end of the final carol the water had reached the bottom of the hall steps. Undaunted, a couple of gallant people waded through the water to the hall and heated up the mince pies and mulled wine, which was then enjoyed by all in St Andrew’s church. Finally a very big thank-you for the donations to The Children’s Society which amounted to £103. Exton always turns up trumps. WOODBURY PARISH COUNCIL CASUAL VACANCY NOTICE TWO VACANCIES EXIST ON THE PARISH COUNCIL FOR COUNCILLORS IN THE EXTON & WOODBURY WARDS If you are interested in becoming a Parish Councillor and would like to be considered for one of these vacancies please apply to the Chairman c/o The Clerk at the address below, giving details of your skills, hobbies and interests etc. All applications must arrive by noon on Friday 7 February 2014.

The afternoon just flew by with an amusing sketch of Cinderella produced by some of our members. This was followed by two light hearted quizzes, all of which were greeted with whoops of laughter. Finally cards were exchanged and the beautifully wrapped presents for the residence of Exeter’s Arthur Robert Home were collected. Everyone agreed that it had been a very enjoyable start to the Christmas festivities.

11 Busy Start! 2014 is off to a busy start for children in all classes with a number of exciting visits and events planned. As part of their work finding out about Victorians, children in Cherry, Maple and Ash Classes will be visiting a former textile mill to gain an insight into what working life would have been like during the reign of Queen Victoria. Photo - Pupils in Maple Class with some of the Victorian artefacts they have collected for their classroom display. Once Upon a Time ………. Younger pupils will base much of the work they will be d o i n g o n Traditional Stories and Fairy Tales. This theme will relate to other areas of their learning, including Design Technology when children will be given opportunities to plan and make models linked to stories that they will be sharing Photo - Getting into role – some Fairy Tale Characters from Oak Class during the term. Keeping Active Our athletes are limbering up in readiness for a number of events and activities including a local Swimming Gala, the East Devon Year 5 and Year 6 Athletics’ Final and the Exmouth Dance Festival – We wish them well.

1 March. 5 April. 3 May.
