One explanation broadly accepted in this country concerning the origins of Boxing Day is that it was the day after Christmas Day, when employees in large country houses, who would of course have had to work on the 25th, were given Boxing Day off. By way of thanks, employees were given boxed gifts to take back to their families on the 26th – to share with them if they so wished! Whilst Woodbury News is not able to give boxed gifts, we are able to give thanks – to everyone involved in the production and distribution of Woodbury News. There are far too many people involved to mention them all individually, as inevitably someone would unintentionally get left out. Global thanks go to the Board of Directors, under the chairmanship of Peter Payne; to Karen Squires who has the unenviable job of collating the material from many sources and rearranging it into the magazine you receive; to the distributors who month in month out deliver your magazine on time; and to the contributors. Some organisations ask the same person to send in copy each month; some organisations have a rota system, so that different club members write a report each month; some individuals send in their own news or that of their neighbours.

Two contributors perhaps deserve special mention: Katharine Wheeler, who meticulously collects photos and news from Woodbury Salterton and sends in copy, and Audrey Elphick, who coordinates the items from Exton. Correction: a sharp-eyed reader has pointed out that the regular times/dates given in the December magazine for the mobile library are out-of-date. The correct information is given on page 32, together with details about the No. 56 bus service over the holiday period. Thank you, Ann, and apologies for the error.

OUR COVER PHOTO was submitted by Alan Wright. It shows Mike Bull, once again performing a Stanley Holloway monologue in his inimitable manner at the recent Follies production: Still Quirky at Thirty. He is holding cartoon figures drawn by his wife, Sally. Thank you, Mike, for making us all laugh, and thank you, Alan, for the Follies photos found on pages 22 and 23. General Quality Building Service

ST SWITHUN’S CHURCH has “said it with flowers” for many years, with the help of a small group of ladies who take a turn on a rota system. Anyone is welcome to join in on the rota or just for the four festivals each year: Christmas, Easter, St Swithun’s Tide and Harvest. Barbara and Sandra have been doing the flowers for over 25 years and would love to welcome some of the younger residents of Woodbury, bring the children, they really enjoy helping, have a go - there are no rules - do your “own thing”. It’s not a competition, we can guide you if you wish. We would love to hear from you. A big Thank You to our team for all their beautiful flower displays throughout the year, and we would like to wish you and yours a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. FoSS (FRIENDS OF ST SWITHUN’S) During 2014 the FoSS committee organised a concert and supper in January, a full concert with Exeter School and local choirs in April and an afternoon tea in church in July. These events were well supported by members and friends. During the year we were sorry to lose our inspirational founding member Jill Whitton, as she and Patrick left for pastures new in the New Forest. FoSS was able to fund the checking and rewiring of the electrics in the Church and has made money available for masonry repairs at the west door. FoSS will continue to raise money to maintain the fabric of the Church and enable it to be available to all members of the community. Again, concerts and events will be organised, which we hope will appeal to a significant number within our village. Saturday 24 January AGM in Church, which will be followed by a short concert, featuring Bel Canto singers, Nigel Alcock and Robin Whyte; plus supper with a glass of wine at £7.50 per person. Friday 24 April, a full concert with Exeter School choir and ensembles, Community Choir and Bel Canto singers, with a glass of wine and nibbles in the interval. Saturday 18 July afternoon tea in Church, details to follow. We also hope to host an autumn concert in Church. The acoustics in St Swithun’s are excellent; therefore it is an ideal venue for musical events, which the FoSS committee hope will continue to be held for many years.

NOVEMBER WEATHER The relatively warm weather continued on into November and it was not until the 24th that we had the first ground frost; max/min temperatures for the month were 18C/1C. Winds came mostly from the South and West and rainfall was well up at 179.1 mm (= 7.05 ins and 180% of average); in spite of that there were some lovely spells and on the 20th a spot perfect red admiral settled on our garden fence and opened its wings to the autumn sunshine – what beauty! The South coast suffered severe storms with 90 mile an hour winds on the 13th; these were from the SE, coincided with high tides, did much damage along the Devon coast and brought down many trees. I have disturbed several early snipe in recent days which some say is a sign of a hard winter – probably as good a forecast as we will get from other quarters. PJH

WOODBURY COMMUNITY CHOIR It has been a fantastic year for the choir. We have welcomed a lovely bunch of new members and have performed throughout the year at events such as The Spring Concert in St Swithun's Church, the WW1 Commemoration on the Village Green, The Woodbury Follies and culminating with a memorable performance in Exeter Cathedral as part of Night of A Thousand Voices. New members are always welcome. We meet in the back classroom at Woodbury Primary School from 7.309.00pm on Mondays (but not the first Monday of the month) and is £5 per session. Contact Sarah for any information: sarahjrowen@hotmail.com WOODBURY NEWS for 2015 remains at £5 for the year, with subs payable to the person who delivers your copy.

The Directors of Woodbury News would like to wish all our readers a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

7 CAMERA CLUB 2014 The Camera Club has continued with monthly meetings during this year, and now meets in the Church Rooms on the third Wednesday in the month. There has been some turnover in membership, but with an influx of new members, we are back with our quota of twenty members. We continue to encourage membership from different levels of experience, the only imperative being that members learn from each other and attempt to improve their photographic skills. The 2015 Camera Club calendar is now available and is selling well at £6 each. You can get your copy at Cyril’s shop. This year we have some landscapes of Woodbury, but have also included more activities and people taking part in village life. Cyril tells me that the photograph below, taken by Pete Broadbelt, is one of the favourites! We have not finalised our programme for next year, but we are looking forward to working with the History Society and Roger Stokes, in attempting to match his historic photos of Woodbury with a modern equivalent. In November the charity coffee mornings collected £100 for Woodbury Royal British Legion. The cheque was presented to Sandra Huish and Derrick Mead, shown in the photograph with Vicki and Anna. THE BLUESBURY’S GRAND CHRISTMAS PARTY In aid of WOODBURY PLAYING FIELDS SATURDAY 20 DECEMBER THE MALT HOUSE, THE MALTSTERS ARMS, WOODBURY 7.30pm - MIDNIGHT Everyone invited! It’s becoming a bit of a habit; so for the third year running… Ladies and gentlemen, Bluesbury Music formally invites the entire population of Woodbury, Woodbury Salterton and Exton, their friends and family to their Grand Christmas Charity Party. Appearing on the night: The Low Notes, Blue Swayed Blues, Julian Piper’s Junkyard Angels, The Sensational Travelling Bluesburys. Your musical host for the evening will once again be the fabulous Alan Hooper. Admission to the event will be free and food may of course be purchased before and throughout the evening. This year we thought it was time we raised money for a charity connected directly with the village of Woodbury, and whilst there will be free entry, there will be a collection throughout the evening to raise funds for Woodbury Community Playing Fields. Find out more at https://sites.google.com/site/woodburycpf/; a very worthy cause which aims to bring top class facilities to the village. How could we not support them? Looking forward to a big turn out. Remember your dancing shoes.

9 WOODBURY DANCE STUDIO We are now approaching the twentieth anniversary of the ballet school and its strong connection with Woodbury Primary School. During this last year, six of the younger students were accepted as Junior Associates of the Royal Ballet School/Elmhurst, and Amelie Donovan continues as a Mid Associate. The seniors have had their successes: three have been nominated to dance in Manchester in February and several contributed very successful choreographies to our November performance at Sidmouth Manor Pavilion. Many students entered the “Aspiring Dancer 2014” organised by the IDTA, and all went through to the finals. We took a clean sweep of the trophies Anna Harries, Junior and Amelie Donovan, Senior. We are now rehearsing for our next performance at Sidmouth Manor Pavilion on 28 February and 1 March.

CAROL SINGING AROUND WOODBURY 11 AND 18 DECEMBER Come and join us to sing and/or collect. We are meeting at the Arch at 7.00pm. All proceeds to Save the Children. Refreshments afterwards.

10 WOODBURY COMMUNITY ORCHARD As befits an orchard group this has been a year of steady growth, putting out roots and branches into the community! By the time you read this there will be almost 60 young fruit trees planted at Town Lane, next to the Cricket Pitch. Our latest planting session was a real village event with young and old wielding spades and mulch in beautiful late autumn sunshine. A massive thank you to all involved especially the Guides (you were fantastic!), the Rainbows and children from Woodbury School. We are eagerly waiting to see the designs that the school children are creating for us to use as a logo/posters and advertising. You will notice that at least half the new trees are now labelled. We have planted a wide range of mostly local old varieties that you won’t find in shops, for example, Tom Putt, Lucombe’s Pine, Pitmaston Pineapple, Whimple Wonder. It is going to be extremely exciting when these bear fruit. There are also pears, a cherry and plum in the rows so there should be a good harvest in a few years. Our other events this year have included a pleasant picnic in the blossom, learning how to prune apple trees under the expert tuition of Ken Crundwell, weeding sessions (about as popular as you might expect!), and a harvesting and apple juicing session. We are extremely fortunate to be able to use a well established village orchard for many of these events. As the village gets slowly built on we hope that the orchard will remain a haven for all to enjoy and use for many years to come. New members or attendees will be very welcome at our events.

35 During May and October over 250 pupils from Newton Poppleford, Otterton, East Budleigh, Woodbury and Marpool (Exmouth) Primary Schools were hosted on educational outings on the heaths by our wardens. In addition, we supervised a local Brownie group to undertake conservation work on the Commons, with the group aiming to attain their Blue Peter badge for conservation work. We hope to increase our education work in 2015 with local schools. As in previous years we participated in Heathweek, as well as promoting Woodbury Common at the Natural Seaton festival. The Friends of the Commons group has continued to develop this last year and now has over 200 members who received regular information about Woodbury Common and its management. We held 18 events for members over the year from moth trapping to events discovering the history of Dalditch camp on East Budleigh Common. Membership of the Friends group is free and is a great way to keep informed about what the Conservation Trust is doing. Contact Kate.Ponting@clintondevon.com if you would like to join. Our Annual Forum in November was particularly well attended with over 50 people turning up to discuss issues of concern and to hear an amazing talk by local ecologist John Walters on some of the most enigmatic insects to be found on the heaths. As always we would like to thank the many organisations and individuals who have helped us during the year, including local schools and community groups, including the Otter Valley Association. The Devon and Cornwall Probation Trust, the Royal Marines and the East Devon Fire Service are additional longterm partners who assist with essential conservation work. A team of volunteers has assisted the Conservation Trust annually to undertake wildlife surveys and habitat work, with the Devon Amphibian and Reptile Group (DRAG), the Devon Bat Group, Butterfly Conservation, the RSPB and the Devon Wildlife Trust coordinating some of the activities relating to improving the understanding of the local biodiversity. In particular we would like to thank Doug Cullen, the volunteer warden on the Otter Estuary for his continued sterling work, and Lesley Kerry, Pete Gotham and Bungy Williams, whose support and advice on all aspects of heathland management and wildlife is invaluable. Happy Christmas to everyone, and we hope that your holidays will involve a least one outing onto the Commons! What better way to start the New Year. Dr Sam Bridgewater, Nature Conservation Manager (Sam.Bridgewater @clintondevon.com)

A YEAR ON THE COMMONS Another busy year for the Pebblebed Heaths Conservation Trust on Woodbury Common. The biggest change most of those who visit the heaths will have noticed over the year will be the fencing around Bicton Common to allow conservation grazing. Dartmoor ponies will be introduced into this area from March 2015, with cattle from May 2014. The introduction of grazing will help ensure the habitats are kept in the best possible condition for wildlife. Another change has been the introduction of dog bins at four key car parks: the public have responded very positively so far by using them, and the amount of dog waste has decreased significantly. Works to improve the surfacing of Four Firs and Estuary car parks was also completed during the summer. Over the winter months we continued our scrub/tree clearance programme with East Budleigh, Dalditch, Woodbury, Hawkerland, Bicton and Mutter’s Moor Commons being the focus of attention in 2014. Swailing (controlled burning) was also undertaken on Colaton Raleigh, East Budleigh and Hawkerland Commons to create pioneer heathland and improve the mosaic of heathland age structures for wildlife. 2014 was a good summer in terms of weather, following a very wet winter with 639mm rainfall during the December-February period. Last winter was also not too not cold with only 23 frosts recorded, the last on 24 March, over a month earlier than in 2013. June and July this year were very hot. As a result the wildlife on the heath has been doing reasonably well, including some species of European importance. Nightjar numbers are stable and Dartford warbler numbers are up, for examp le. However, S outher n damselfly populations still seems to be declining (possibly climate related), and we are seeking to reverse this decline through further management.

This year we plan more pruning classes, so we can look after the established orchard and learn how to care for our young trees, as well as trips (cider making anyone?), talks, weeding (yes it has to be done!), and once again juicing and wassailing. There will soon be simple benches and a good space in the centre of the new planting which can be used by groups for relevant activities. Do join us for our second Wassail on 16 January at 7pm, Town Lane Orchard. Please bring torches, instruments and a good singing voice. Last year the numbers were so great we ran out of mulled cider, so it might be worth bringing a flask of your own this time! As always, for more information email alexthiemann@tiscali.co.uk. We would love to have more members (£5 annual subscription), or donations of time or money to contribute towards a tree and upkeep of the orchard. Finally, thank you to all involved, especially Dartmoor Tree Surgeons for practical support and donations of mulch, logs and grass maintenance. Pruning Workshops - 25 January and 7 February. Our AGM is on 12 February, Church Rooms, 6.30-8.30 with a talk about Bee-keeping. WOODBURY PARISH POPPY APPEAL Thank you to all who contributed towards the Parish Poppy Appeal this year: the collectors and helpers, householders, pubs, businesses, charity collection, St Swithun's Church and the RBL branch itself. The children at Woodbury Salterton and Woodbury Schools did fantastically well as usual. For the first time at this stage after the appeal fortnight the £4,000 barrier was broken at £4,358. Thanks again. John Treasaden - Poppy Appeal Organiser

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION COFFEE MORNINGS 10.00 - 11.30 8, 22 JANUARY. 5, 19 FEBRUARY. There will not be a Coffee Morning on 25 December.

12 WOODBURY COMMUNITY PLAYING FIELDS WCPF is a registered charitable company set up to develop the Community Playing Fields in the village. We are very proud of our charity’s achievements in establishing ourselves this year, involving ourselves in local events, consulting with local residents, and reaching our current strong financial position from fund-raising and grant-raising income. Our key objectives for WCPF are: ¨ Making the playing fields a central point of village life and a desirable location for community events for all members of the community. ¨ Encouraging active and regular participation in a wide range of sports and recreation in Woodbury. ¨ Supporting the local community by providing excellent indoor facilities. We intend to deliver a new children’s play area (Phase 1 - to be completed during winter 2014/15), a multi-use games area (Phase 2 - to be completed during 2015), and then a new multi-use community for the football club, tennis club and rooms/outdoor space for use by Maytree Pre-school and scouts/guides groups (Phase 3 – during the next few years). This past year we have established the charity, including the legal charity and company set-up, and learnt how the Parish Council currently manages the site. We have made huge financial progress over the last year in both grant-raising and fund-raising. We have had many amazing grants awarded to us this year. For the Play Park - Gibbons Family Trust £25,000, The Norman Family Charitable Trust £1,000, Lord Clinton's Charitable Trust £500, Cash for your Community £475, Viscount Amory's Charitable Trust £350, Follies £300, South West Water £250, The Exeter Foundation £10,000, Coastal Recycling Community Fund £9,066, EDDC (s106) £7,500, Broadmead Trust £250. We currently have approx. £55,000 toward the Play Park and are in the process of trying to raise £20,000 more to complete the excellent design from HAGS SMP, which the children of the village selected. The Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) was awarded £25,000 by EDDC (s106) and then a further £20,000 by The Norman Family Charitable Trust, so we will soon be in a position to deliver this fantastic resource. We have worked hard to raise awareness in the community of WCPF’s proposals for enhancements to the facilities and have attended many events in the village throughout the last year, including School Summer Fayre, Community Fun Days and Craft Fairs, as well as using our own fundraising events to publicise our charity and plans.

We held an Auction of Promises in March which raised £2,200, a BBQ in August (£250) The Country Fayre in September (£940) and most recently a Reindeer Hunt around the village (£50). We have also received monies from Bag2School, Coffee and Cake mornings, collection pots located in the community, the Halloween Party, Woodbury Post Office Stores donating costs from customers’ plastic bag purchases, and from businesses and community members lending their support. All these contributions from our community keep the WCPF committee hard at work, trying to realise the objectives of the charity. WCPF appreciates and thanks everyone for all their support and hard work in 2014.

WOODBURY TENNIS CLUB The Tennis Club has had one of its most successful years, fielding three teams in the district leagues, two men’s and a mixed team. All had a good season, maintaining their league status. More importantly, 16 club members gained league experience, improving their standard of play. Club sessions have been well supported, and Friday evening sessions have continued into the winter months, with two working floodlights. The Club hut has been refurbished thanks to the skill of Hans Petrovics. The Club is holding a Christmas gathering, organised by Helen Ryland, to be attended by 15 members. Teams of volunteers have been needed to remove masses of leaves from the courts, which at last will be playable on arrival. As always the club is seeking new and former members to come and play. Club sessions will continue throughout the winter on Sunday mornings from 10.30 and Friday evenings from 6.00pm. Local electrician Will Childs, Infinity Electrical, has kindly agreed to look at the lights and will put in a plan to have them working at the end of the summer, providing the Club can raise the necessary funds. Please come and join us; if you can hit a ball you are needed! The AGM will be held in the Church Rooms at 7.30pm on Wednesday 4 February. This is an open meeting for anyone to find out about the club; all are welcome. Details of membership from Pat Browne (232805) ruthandpatb@aol.com or Jackie Clarke (232832).

1ST WOODBURY GUIDES

She talked about particular incidents in her career and how, when she retired, she was able to use her knowledge of the law and her insights into human behaviour to write her first novel Crucial Evidence. In the latter half of the year we enjoyed talks from Simon Dell, ex Police Constable and well-known author; Tony Burges, a Red Coat Guide in Exeter and Brian Wood, an Exton resident who spent many years working abroad using his entomological knowledge and skills to help indigenous farmers. Our final talk of the year was in November when Angela Sutton-Vane showed us how her skills as a historian had helped determine the evolution of the carpet industry in this country. On a glorious day in June, fifty-three Exton Ladies and friends enjoyed a coach outing to Dartington and Dartmouth. A boat trip on the river sparking in the summer sunshine, a browse through the historic buildings and wonderful independent shops or just a quiet sit looking at the view were some of the ways we passed that afternoon before coming together to feast on scones, jam and clotted cream in the Royal Castle Hotel. Warm and sincere thanks were expressed to Pauline Collas for her superb planning and organisation. Finally, many thanks to Chris Bilyard for her unstinting work in guiding the Exton Ladies Group through another year. Her charm, warmth and unfailing good humour are hugely appreciated by us all. Thank you Chris.

Tree Planting On the afternoon of Saturday 29 November, some of the Guides, armed with wellies, gloves and a spade, went up to the Woodbury Community Orchard to help out with planting about 30 new apple trees. The actual planting was quite hard but, on the whole, was good fun. We got into little groups along with other villagers and got digging. It was a great opportunity to meet some new people and get to know how to plant trees (quite a useful skill to have achieved). EXTON NEWS

WOODBURY GARDEN CLUB We have enjoyed another happy and successful year in the Garden Club, our membership remains healthy, but we will always welcome new members. This year we were entertained by six speakers, with topics as varied as Gravel Gardens, Fruit and Vegetable Gardening, Climbing Plants, and a fascinating explanation of the Development of the Cottage Garden. We also found time for members to chat and exchange ideas, and to learn from our own experienced and knowledgeable members, who are always willing to share their knowledge and demonstrate how to present exhibits for showing. The Plant Sale and the Annual Show, our main events open to the public, take some organising and hard work, but are enjoyable and well received by the public. We managed to fit in two outings this year, an evening at Burrow Farm Gardens, a beautiful evening after a wet and miserable day, and a day at Cotehele, a National Trust property on the Tamar. If this was not enough activity, we also plant and maintain the tubs in the Arch. This year the display was in red, white and blue with Flanders poppies, to add to the community events for the Commemorations to mark the beginning of WW1. The display was commented on by many people, and the effort of watering all through the hot summer was worth it. We look forward to another exciting year in 2015, when two of our gardens will be open for the National Gardens Scheme.

ST ANDREW’S CHURCH, EXTON SUNDAY SERVICES 1st Sunday 6.00pm Evening Service with hymns. 2nd Sunday 9.30 Eucharist service with hymns. 3rd Sunday 9.30 Lay-led service with hymns. 4th Sunday 9.30 Eucharist service with hymns. EXTON LADIES GROUP A Review of 2014 Exton Ladies have met regularly throughout 2014, a fifth year of friendship and fun. We have had the joy of welcoming some new members and sadness of saying goodbye to older ones. We have enjoyed being informed and sometimes challenged by a variety of speakers. Equally important, we have enjoyed getting to know each other and making and deepening friendships. Just before Christmas 2013 our traditional Christmas Lunch was held in St Andrew’s Church Hall. The hall and the table settings were beautifully decorated, the food and wine superb and the conversation excellent. Following the meal we enjoyed an amusing sketch of Cinderella and two quizzes. It was a lovely start to the Christmas season. January saw Elsie Wood recalling her early married life in Cyprus. This was a fascinating insight into Elsie’s life in 1950s Cyprus especially for those of us just getting to know her. In March Stephen Ayres talked us through the growth and development of Exeter Airport from just a grass field used for club flying to a base for RAF Fighter Command in World War 2 to the thriving Exeter International Airport we know today. A sunny April afternoon saw Jennifer KirkhamSandy talk to us about selling books in the 21st century and her Topsham-based on-line book company ‘Quertyword Limited’. Despite great concern that paper books are disappearing, electronic books actually comprise just 10% of the total book market and firms like Qwertyword can supply both. In May Margaret Barnes, a new arrival in Exton, introduced herself to the group by giving an enthralling insight into the life of a barrister.

WOODBURY C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL Christingle Service at Exeter Cathedral Members of Woodbury School’s Ethos Group were joined by other children at a Christingle service held at Exeter Cathedral. The special service provided an opportunity for those attending to contribute to a collection fund in aid of the Children’s Society. Pupils from across the school who attended the event with their families were treated to thought-provoking Bible readings from the Dean, with the beautiful voices of the Cathedral Choir helping to create the perfect setting for the service. After a number of rousing carols had been sung, the lights were dimmed and each child was given a lighted Christingle to carry as they took part in a candle-lit procession around the Cathedral. The occasion was a truly memorable and spiritual experience for all those present, serving as a very fitting start to the Christmas preparations.

WOODBURY SALTERTON WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Our WI membership remains at over 20 and for a relatively small group we pack in a lot of fun and friendship, which is one of the aims of the WI movement. Our monthly meetings are well attended and enjoyed. In 2014 we celebrated 60 years and held a Diamond Jubilee Party at Froginwell with entertainment by a magician. We hosted the annual Group Meeting and invited guests from our Group to a seaside-themed evening with Punch and Judy. We ran the raffle at the village May Fay event and got not only our own members but many people in the community around us knitting blanket squares for Africa - we sent 35 blankets, each comprising 36 squares. We have a weekly walking group on a Monday, with some of the members taking their dogs along, and have even provided a dog-walking service to someone recovering from an operation. We meet for coffee once a month at The Digger’s Rest. Our President, Jenny Kemp, again hosted a lunch in her home and our Treasurer Gill Bricknell had another Quiz afternoon in her home followed by tea. New members are always very welcome – so why not give it a try? We meet on the second Wednesday each month at 7.30 in the Village Hall.

WOODBURY SALTERTON C of E PRIMARY SCHOOL The strong links between our village church and our church school continue. The School holds Collective Worship and its Celebration Assembly on Mondays and Fridays respectively in church and the main services of the year also in church – Easter, Harvest and Christmas (concert and the Christingle Service). The School Leavers Service also takes place in church. 2014 marked a milestone in the history of the School. Since its foundation in 1847 it has always had its own exclusive Headteacher. In July we said goodbye and a huge thank-you to Louise Lowes, our Head for four years, and the Governors decided to opt for a Management Partnership with Littleham C of E School. Duncan Nelmes, Head at Littleham, took on our school as well. The school staff, headed by Senior Teacher Ellen Milford, have been adjusting to this new arrangement, which should prove beneficial to both schools financially and in the sharing of expertise. This is the way forward now for smaller schools. We were pleased that Mr Nelmes attended the service on Armistice Day, in this year when we have marked the centenary of the start of the First World War, at the Menin Gate at Ypres, Belgium. He took with him a wreath from our school with the hand-written prayers of our schoolchildren attached.

Christmas Celebrations Pupils from Beech and Willow Classes dressed as characters from Woodbury School’s Nativity Play, It’s a Baby!

Class 4 have been completing their hour of code. Two pupils made sequences of code and were using loops and repetition to send Angry Bird characters around a maze. They had to debug their code along to way to improve the programming. Well done boys!

Class 4 have also made some fabulous Roman shields for their homework as part of their topic. The shields will be used in a battle. Mrs Sommers is very proud of all their hard work!

Mary (Amber Owen), Joseph (Otto Sutton), Little Donkey (Sebastian Bosley), Angel Gabriel (Mahlia Stephens), King (Jake Gibbs-Clark), and Shepherd (Joseph Cowley).

WOODBURY VILLAGE HALL

The fund-raising events are good for fun for all involved and, thanks to the various efforts, we have been able to pay our Parochial Share in full. This year our allocated share was £8,469. This goes to the Diocese towards clergy pay and pensions, the financial support given to our church schools as well as the general running cost of the Diocese and the services it provides. We have commissioned a special stone to mark the grave of Marianne Pidsley, the Founder of our church – and also of the school – as the writing on her headstone had become illegible. We held an All Souls Service for the first time, remembering those who have influenced our own lives, and this may well become an annual service within our Mission Community. Our major project for 2015 is to deal with the essential repairs to the church floor.

New Facilities On Saturday 22 November the new facilities in Woodbury V illag e H all w er e officially opened by Mrs Peggy Du Buisson where over 70 people were in attendance. One of the refurbished rooms has now been renamed as 'The DuBuisson Room' in memory of her late husband, Valentine, who was hall chairman for many years and a very active member of the village. The village now has a much im p r o v e d h a l l w it h modernised and enlarged toilets and increased storage areas. There is also a brand-new, re-designed kitchen which includes a range and a commercial dishwasher. Fund-raising began two years ago with a target of around £70,000. Many local groups and people enthusiastically joined in the task and raised over £12,000 which attracted interest from local and national organisations who between them made grants totalling approximately £60,000. This enabled the project to proceed last July.

WHIST Although we have lost some of our friends from Woodbury, we have had some new players come along and continue to enjoy our monthly Whist Drive in the Village Hall on the third Tuesday at 7.30. We do not take ourselves too seriously and there is a lot of laughter and a family feel to these evenings. We are grateful to Gill and Patrick Bricknell for organising these evenings and the Church is very appreciative that the profits made are given to church funds. WHIST TUESDAY 16 DECEMBER, 7.30 IN WOODBURY SALTERTON VILLAGE HALL

WOODBURY SALTERTON CHRISTMAS SERVICES AND EVENTS Christmas Communion - Christmas Eve at 11.30pm. WOODBURY SALTERTON NEWS HOLY TRINITY CHURCH, WOODBURY SALTERTON 2014 brought a fresh challenge to our church, one which other smaller churches are also having to face - that of carrying on without an official Churchwarden. David Hornblower, who has served our church well as Churchwarden for three years, retired as he and his wife Sarah and son William were moving to another church which is more able to provide for the needs of children on a weekly basis. We thanked him and Sarah for all that they had both done for our church in many ways and wished them every happiness with their new church family. As no-one felt able to take on the role of Churchwarden we have been functioning without an official one. Aran Brown and Jenny Kemp, as Deputy Wardens, are kindly carrying out most of the duties of Warden with the help and support of other PCC members including Phil Dent, whose wealth of experience as a former Warden is invaluable. The Friends of the Church continue to organise a variety of fund-raising events – a quiz, cake stalls at school, coffee mornings and, the most successful of all, the marvellous Scarecrow competition. The village really got into the spirit of this and over 50 scarecrows appeared at various locations throughout the village. It is hoped to make this an annual event.

Grateful thanks go to the following for their very generous support: Devon County Council, Devon Community Council, East Devon Council, Coastal Recycling, Awards for All, Garfield Weston Foundation and the Norman Family Trust. Also to The Village Shop, Pat Browne, Ken Perry, Chris Lear, Tim Frampton, Robin Lennox and all the local groups that use the hall for their hard work and fund-raising efforts. WOODBURY WOMEN’S INSTITUTE A Successful (jam packed!) 94th year for Woodbury WI There has been plenty going on again this year for Woodbury WI with members enjoying a wide variety of activities – news must be spreading as we now have 51 members. Our monthly meetings are aimed at being as varied as possible with a mixture of talks and activities. 2014 has seen an excellent selection of speakers, possibly two of the favourites being Exmouth Mussels, who brought samples for us all to enjoy, and a talk with wonderful slides from Sue Bury on her trip to Antarctica. Members have also enjoyed visits to Paris and Bath and plans for visits in 2015 are already under way. We hosted a St George’s Day Supper in the Church Rooms and held our Annual Garden Party on a beautiful day in a member’s delightful garden. It was another lovely afternoon when we went to the Croquet Club at Budleigh Salterton, which included tuition from their members followed by afternoon tea. The sun shone and the sea was blue – perfect. Throughout the year we have participated in various competitions, including Devon Federation of WIs Quiz, Whist and Skittles. One of our ladies had her photograph selected for the 2015 Devon WI Calendar. Our monthly Book Group is very popular and each Friday morning we meet at the White Hart for coffee and skittles. This year we were invited by A la Ronde to take part in the fourth year of their Christmas tree display. T h e K a f f e F a s s et t exhibition at the American Museum in Bath was our i ns p ir a t i o n f or t h e decorations. Included in the Bath exhibition was a huge tree decorated with pompoms so we decided to ‘have a go’ at one ourselves. Members have been busy pompom making Woodbury WI members Liz Hill, Pauline Wratten, Ann and we are really pleased Shell and Elspeth Fisher with the decorated tree. with the end result.

WOODBURY TWINNING ASSOCIATION 2014 has been another busy year for the Twinning Association. As well as a trip to visit our Twinning friends in Bretteville, we have had a hugely successful year, welcoming several new members. Our monthly programme of social events has proved extremely popular, yet again, ranging from garden visits to wine tasting, barbeques and progressive suppers. Next year's programme looks just as exciting. Our AGM will be held on 27 January in The White Hart when we will be discussing either hosting our French friends or visiting Bretteville to take part in their Medieval Celebrations. In February, we are very pleased to announce that we are holding an 'Allo, 'Allo Evening in the Village Hall run by The Moonstone Theatre Group which promises to be an hilarious night! The Twinning Association is open to all residents of Woodbury and for further information, please contact the Secretary, Jan Owen on 232694. 24 THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION The year has been a busy and active one for Woodbury Parish dominated by the Centenary Commemoration of the Great War on 4th August 1914. The recent pictures in the press of the Art installation ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ with 888,246 ceramic poppies in the Moat of the Tower of London, one for every life lost during the war, give a graphic and poignant reminder of the ultimate sacrifice. In June tubs of red, white and blue flowers were planted at the entrances to Woodbury and the theme was repeated at the Arch. In July we hosted an Exhibition for the Poppy Quilt and WW1 Banner made and donated by The South West Quilters, raising funds for the Devon Annual Poppy Appeal. The draw took place at Killerton House in November and the total raised was over £8,000. August 4th was our main Community event with a day of commemorations, an Act of Remembrance featured on BBC Spotlight in the morning, an Historical exhibition in the Village Hall of the life and times in Woodbury Parish in the afternoon and a Community Concert in the marquee on the Village green in the evening. All the events were very well supported and the various collections raised £1,500, from which cheques of £500 were sent to Cancer Research UK and to Hasler Company (formally the Rehabilitation Unit at Devonport), and the balance for the Woodbury branch RBL. Songs of Praise was held on the Sunday evening, August 3rd, in the marquee. Full details of the weekend events can be seen on www.woodbury devon.co.uk Recently we have had new lockable cupboards fitted in the RBL room, giving more space for storage and the room will be decorated soon. New visual RBL signs have also been added to the outside of the Hall, front and back, making our room more visible to visitors. The annual Remembrance service on the Green, with the newly refurbished War Memorial taking pride of place giving better disabled access, was well attended and November 11th Armistice with the children from Woodbury C of E School reading ‘The Roll of Honour’ was a fitting end to this special year. At the recent AGM Sandra Huish was re-elected as Chairman; special thanks were recorded for Sandra who came up with the ideas and organised everything for the Community weekend, which was a great success. We welcomed a new committee member from an old Woodbury family - Gill Dougal, whose father was Ivor Loman who helped run the Woodbury Scouts for many years. Gill was born and bred in Woodbury, attended the village School and is married to a serving soldier; so a new phase is opening up in Woodbury with a new generation planning evening events for 2015. Watch this space.

21 This year we enjoyed a delicious Christmas lunch at Woodbury Park.

After ninety-four years it is fair to say that Woodbury WI is thriving. We have a very hard-working committee and although much emphasis is placed on an interesting agenda we also aim to help and support each other where necessary as well as enjoying ourselves and having plenty of fun and laughter on the way. We meet the second Thursday of the month in the village hall at 7.30pm and new members are always most welcome or just come along as a visitor, no jam-making skills required! Woodbury WI would like to wish everyone a Very Happy Christmas and All Good Wishes for the New Year.

CHARITY COFFEE MORNINGS EVERY TUESDAY, 10.00-12.00 CHURCH ROOMS, WOODBURY Coffee/tea and a homemade cake £2 on vintage china. All profits to local charities. Everyone welcome.

THE FOLLIES STILL QUIRKY AT THIRTY The 30th Woodbury Music Hall production, Still Quirky at Thirty, was staged from 27-29 November in Woodbury village hall. It was produced by Phil Slater and Maureen Wright, with Dave McLellan as Master of Ceremonies and was supported by a large team of helpers behind the scenes. It was good to see many performers back again on stage, but also pleasing to see so much new talent, particularly from the younger members of our villages.

Now that so many people own a digital camera and that it is possible to reproduce such excellent photographs in Woodbury News, do email your photos of local people or events to Karen on karensquires100@gmail.com The editorial team still need a wider spread of news, particularly about our younger people. What are you all up to? Why don’t YOU write an article or send in a photo?

ROUND AND ABOUT

Our final event of 2014 will see us wearing our dancing shoes and raising money at The Maltsters Arms on Saturday 20 December – The Bluesbury Grand Christmas Party starts at 7.30pm (free admission) and we really hope to see you all there!

RBL ROOM behind WOODBURY VILLAGE HALL All are invited to join us on alternate Thursdays. The Woodbury News attempts to represent a variety of views within the Community, but does not accept responsibility for anything but Editorial comment. While it may publish unacknowledged material, nothing is included unless the Editor knows the name and address of the author(s).
