Wet, wet, wet! As I type, I'm watching a flood-bound car which has broken down in Bonds Lane. We've all got a tale of wet windy woe to tell, from the lady whose car was disabled by the large pothole at the bottom of Deepway to the disrupted friends and relatives who could not complete planned travel.

Despite the weather, there is plenty of activity in the Parish. At the Parish Council there is a new councillor for Woodbury ward, and a vacancy is advertised for Exton ward. There is the new Mobile Library timetable, an invitation to learn orchard management and production, and great anticipation of the new village cricket and tennis seasons. In Woodbury Salterton, the Resident's Association have been busy considering a number of development plans.

In July this year, it will be four years since I first edited the Woodbury News. Because of increasing commitments elsewhere, and before standards start slipping, I've decided to hang up my boots as editor. There should be a new Editor in place as of the August 2014 edition. I'll still be managing and developing the Woodbury News website, and continuing as a Woodbury News Director. Editing the Woodbury News is a demanding but very rewarding job, and I'd recommend it to anybody with an interest in writing and communications who can devote the time. You'll find details of how to apply for the job inside this month's magazine (page 13). COVER PHOTO: At the February Parish Council Meeting, County Councillor Bernard Hughes announced proposals to link Woodbury to the Exe Estuary Trail. The Parish Council are keen to support the route, which will start at the junction of Globe Hill and Rydon Lane. The route then travels to Ebford (formerly part of Woodbury Parish) and onwards to Exton via the Exe Estuary Trail. The route will be described as a "multi-use route" to avoid the problems caused by "lycra louts" - cyclists who believe that the trail is just for bikes, and who are antagonistic to all other users. The Concert which followed The Friends of St Swithun’s AGM on 25 January proved to be one of the best we have ever had, celebrating FoSS’s 10th Anniversary in style. Emily Hurst played Mozart’s Andante in C and Borne’s Carmen Fantasy – a tremendously challenging piece for both flautist and accompanist Nigel Alcock, to which they rose with great skill. Jonathan Hurst gave us a wonderful performance of William Weide’s arrangement of My Love is like a red red rose, demonstrating not only his great ability on the cornet but also the wide range of the instrument. Emily also provided the flute accompaniment to Rutter’s For the beauty of the earth, sung lyrically by the Bel Canto Singers who were ably led by Robin Lennox. They also delighted us with beautiful renderings of Stanford’s The Blue Bird and Rowley’s The lark in the clear air. Robin is to be congratulated on inspiring his choir to such a high standard of mellow harmony, and it was obvious that everyone had put in a lot of hard work in rehearsal. Soprano soloist Sarah Owen gave a spirited rendering of Mark Miller’s I Believe with Emily accompanying her most sensitively: and also sang the soprano solo part in The Blue Bird. Nigel Alcock was kept busy providing his usual able piano accompaniment for several of the items, but also played on the organ Purcell’s stirring Trumpet Tune & Air, and a delightful Burns’ Toccata (his own arrangement of a combination of Bach’s Toccata in D minor and several Scottish songs) to remind us that it was Burns’ Night! Well done to everyone.

6 FoSS (FRIENDS OF ST SWITHUN’S) There were 60 people gathered for the AGM and concert on 25 January. Two long serving members of the committee retired, Hazel Pyatt who had moved to Newbury and Shirley Stevens, who has been a resolute supporter for 10 years from the start. We were pleased to welcome John and Elsbeth Fisher and Ted Neather to the committee. The concert was enjoyed by all as reported by Nancy Grist, the food was excellent, and sufficient funds were raised to be able to donate £100 to Breast Cancer Care. Everyone is now looking forward to the next full concert with Woodbury Community Choir, Bel Canto and Exeter School Chamber Choir and instrumental groups on 25 April in Church. This concert is open to all; tickets will be on sale from Rowsells’ in April. It is hoped that FoSS will have the continued support of the wider community both for the Spring Concert and the afternoon tea on 17 July. WOMEN’S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER Friday 7 March, 1.30pm at St Swithun’s This year’s event has been prepared by the Christian women of Egypt and is entitled Streams in the Desert. The speaker will be Reverend Karen Spray of St Swithun’s. Over 3 million people worldwide will be praying and worshipping together during this annual day of prayer, which in Woodbury is jointly celebrated by St Swithun’s and Christ Church. The service will finish in time for children to be collected from school.

In early December we had a very good turn out from the community to help with the initial planting of Woodbury’s Community Orchard, with many people enjoying some well earned mulled cider afterwards. We planted 27 trees and expect to have a second planting in the Spring. If you would like to make a donation towards a tree, please contact Tim Green timandjudy1@btinternet.com. You can donate a smaller amount towards the ongoing costs of maintaining the orchard or donate your time – either would be very welcome. O n 1 8 J anu ar y W ood b u r y Community Orchard held a ‘Wassailing’ where the new trees were treated to a good sing song, toast in cider and some random noises! Photo - “Wassailing” Woodbury Community Orchard is just in its infancy with 16 members and several more people interested. Members benefit from tuition in planting, pruning and maintenance of fruit trees, a chance to take part in apple pressing and sample the results as well as other orchard activities. Future events for members include pruning workshops, apple blossom day and apple pressing later in the year. Single membership is £5 while family membership is £10. 9 THE CHURCH ROOMS A few years ago the Church Rooms were refurbished giving a main room, a toilet and a kitchen. The main room can seat 30 - 35 formally and there are tables for the more active or craft events. Doug Barlow stands down as groundsman after over twenty years at the helm. The ground is a tribute to his commitment and enthusiasm along with that of his assistant Neil Richards. Although Doug will continue to do some work on the ground Neil will now take over as official groundsman. Cricket club members were sad to learn last month that one of their Life Members Cyril Bamsey had died. Cyril played for the cricket club years ago on the old ground and when the club reformed and established itself at Town Lane he was a regular on match days opening up, setting out the seats and scoreboard and keeping an eye on the tea urn. He did a tremendous amount for the club and was well known by all who played at the club as a lovely man and friend to all, he will be missed.

12 WOODBURY GARDEN CLUB 11 February The month's meeting took the form of an AGM. The evening was divided into two sessions, a formal side followed by a presentation of the forthcoming programme for the year and practical details arising from it. Approximately 30 members attended the meeting. During the formal side of the meeting members were given a questionnaire asking for their interests, ideas and practical suggestions. Marian Mead (Chairman) presented her report by going through last years programme and members realised what an interesting, varied and memorable year it had been. The laughter generated was proof of this. Ken Crundwell (Treasurer) presented the accounts and concluded that the annual subscription of £10 can continue. Very good value indeed! Ann Hildred, Ann Wilmington and Joyce Jeans are standing down from the Committee and Jane Greenslade, Jill Askew and Bryony Giles were elected to serve. Marian Mead will continue as Chairman, Ken Crundwell will serve as Vice Chairman and also as Treasurer for a while and Judy Bashforth as Secretary. Ann Hildred was presented with a plant for her long service to the Committee. Jean Carpenter gave a vote of thanks to the Committee on behalf of the members. The second half of the meeting was devoted to next years programme, presented by Judy Bashforth. The practical details that will have to be addressed during the coming year were discussed. Among the topics covered were the plant sale, planting up of plugs, greenhouse space, annual outing, planting areas in red, white and blue for the August celebrations. The plant to be grown by members for the Challenge Cup at the Annual Show in August will be a vegetable, a Show Onion, and quite a challenge for some of us! Although it has been a good year with membership growing, new members of all ages would be very welcome; so why not come along and join us. Our next meeting is on 11 March when Mr D Rawding will be talking about Fruit and Vegetables for Small Gardens, 7.30pm in the Village Hall. 14 WOODBURY CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL Exmouth Dance Festival In advance of resuming a regular dance club at school, Mrs Luxon arranged for a group of Year 5 and Year 6 pupils to take part in a dance festival at Exmouth Community College. Along with children from a number of other primary schools in the Exmouth area, our pupils rehearsed dance sequences choreographed by Year 11 students from ECC. The event concluded with each school performing an individual dance. As a finale, the Year 11 students performed a dance routine they had prepared especially for the occasion.

Woodbury Church of England Primary School - Then and Now This term pupils in Ash, Maple and Cherry Classes have been learning about ‘The Victorians’. Following their visit to Cold Harbour Mill earlier in the spring term, pupils had the opportunity to find out what it would have been like to attend school in Victorian times by taking part in a ‘Victorian Day’ experience. This included having to learn facts by rote and being subjected to harsh punishments meted out by tyrannical teachers. Other tasks included endless brass polishing, ironing clothes and helping to prepare cabbage gruel. Comments from pupils clearly showed they would not have enjoyed being educated in Victorian times, preferring the way they are taught today.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH CHICKEN & LEEK PIE

This is a lovely hearty pie. It can be prepared in advanced and reheated. Serves 6 INGREDIENTS ¨ 6 chicken thighs boned and skinned and chopped into cubes ¨ 4 rashers of smoked bacon cut into small chunks ¨ a generous knob of butter ¨ 1 large onion skinned and roughly chopped ¨ 2 tbs plain flour ¨ 2 medium chopped leeks ¨ 3 chopped cloves of garlic ¨ grated nutmeg ¨ 1glass of medium sherry or white wine ¨ 100ml milk (a little extra if needed) ¨ 1 teaspoon of dried thyme (fresh if you have it) ¨ 1 chicken stock cube ¨ seasoning ¨ 1packet of ready rolled all butter puff pastry METHOD 1. Brown the chopped chicken pieces and bacon in some butter for 3-5 minutes in a frying pan then set aside. 2. In the same pan sauté the onion gently in the butter and add the leeks after a few minutes. 3. Stir in the flour then add the herbs, garlic, stock cube, sherry/wine and milk stirring gently. 4. Bring the mixture up to a simmer continue stirring and add the chicken and bacon. 5. (if the mixture seems too thick stir in a little more milk). 6. Taste and season. 7. Allow the mixture to cool then spoon it into an oven proof serving dish. 8. Roll out the pastry and cover the serving dish containing the mixture and crimp the edges. 9. Make a small hole in the pastry for steam to escape and paint on a milk wash to give the pastry a shine. 10. Place the pie in a hot oven 180˚C for 25-35 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden.

30 RSPB AYLESBEARE COMMON RESERVE Well what a month, rain, storms and more rain! We all recovered from our Christmas break, came back early in the new year all refreshed and ready to go, we have been busy finishing off the last of the grazing project infrastructure, making the site stock proof, all four cattle grids are now in and by early February. We hope to be grazing with our group of 14 Dartmoor and Exmoor ponies, they will be moved from Venn Ottery common over to Harpford common, so it will be a test to see if we are pony proof! We certainly hope that you will enjoy seeing the livestock on site, and the native breeds will slowly be finding their way around their new home. Harpford common was probably last grazed in the Second World War, when everybody made do and were perhaps more resourceful than we are today? Those with commoners’ rights were entitled to graze a few animals here and there, often employed by the large estate, on a reduced wages as they had these benefits! It has been our ancestors that have helped keep the heaths open, by their activity, now us conservation organisations are doing very much what our relativities did for centuries. Other tasks this month include coppicing some blocks of gorse, clearing in and around some of the ponds, clearing windblown trees and tackling some scrub at Venn Ottery. Our big task for the month has been continuing with invading birch, willow and alder at Gotleigh Moor, near to Smeartharp, we are nearly done now and I am sure the guys will appreciate some time on terra-firma. Wildlife, not a great deal to report, none of the usual winter raptors about yet, snipe numbers still relatively low, but larger flocks of mistle thrushes, red wings and field fares now starting to appear. At home, we have a resident robin who is singing most of the night through, perhaps the streetlights are confusing him? Just this morning we flushed a group 5 partridges from Venn Ottery, an unusual sight here on the heaths. The evenings are just starting to lengthen so spring must be just around the corner? Visit to a Victorian Wool Mill On Tuesday 20 January Maple Class went to Cold Harbour Mill, a working Victorian Wool Mill. We were dressed in costumes so that we could find out what life was like for working children in Victorian times. We travelled by coach to Uffculme with Ash class. When we arrived, we had time for a break to eat our snacks and visit the toilet. It was both exciting and scary when we saw the actor coming who was pretending to be Mr Robson. He used a stern, loud voice and he told us to line up, with the girls behind the boys. First, he told you to step forward and say your name. Then he told me off because I had my hands in my pockets.’ Reflecting on their experiences after a day at the mill, children concluded that life nowadays is not so bad and being asked to keep their bedrooms tidy is not such a chore after all.

WOODBURY TENNIS CLUB The Club held its AGM on 12 February. The Officers remained in position with Jackie Clarke as President, Phil Moores Chair, Sylvia Jane Secretary and Pat Browne Treasurer. The subscriptions remain: full member £65, day £40, student £20, junior £15, family £130. There will be two men’s teams in the Exeter and District league, and one mixed team in the East Devon League. We are very pleased that senior coach, Steve Wood, will again run a full programme of junior coaching during the summer term. However there will be a change of day, junior coaching will now take place on Wednesdays from 4.30pm. Glenis Pewsey has again volunteered to organise the groups. Please contact Glenis on 232988 if you want to be included. We are sorry to report that one of our stalwart members from the 80s and 90s, Pam Adams (Brent Close) has passed away after a long illness. She spent the last two years in an Exmouth nursing home. Before her illness she had been very active, often seen cycling through the village, surfing at Sidmouth, or playing tennis at Cranford and Woodbury. She remembered her friends at the Club by leaving a generous legacy of £1000 to Woodbury Tennis Club, which will be used appropriately. FUNDRAISING Will Thornton (16) from Woodbury, and his friend Kiran Thakur have recently applied to do a charity skydive at Dunkeswell for the charity Devon Air Ambulance. They chose the charity as they live in Devon, and the helicopters do great work, saving lives in the hard to get places in Devon. To keep both helicopters in flight every year it costs £4.5 million! They will both be skydiving on 21 June 2014 at the airfield from 15,000 ft. But the attempt is not only a skydive, but a world record attempt; to have the most people skydive in under 24 hours! The previous record is 251, set in Germany, so they hope to beat this record and raise lots of money in the process. 28 DEATH’S Cont’d/… Mike Wilson – 25/7/1940 – 21/1/2014 Sadly Mike passed away peacefully on 21 February after a long battle following a stroke 21 years ago. Born in Stepney in London Mike was the third of four sons. He was evacuated during the war and went to stay in Runnymede in Windsor. At 17 he left his home in London to join the Royal Marines where he served in many places including Borneo, Aden, Cyprus and Malta. In 1960 he met Diane at the Regal in Exmouth (more recently known as Samantha’s nightclub) and after a whirlwind relationship of only two months he proposed in a letter whilst serving abroad. Mike and Di married in September 1960 in St Swithun’s Church, Woodbury just before Mike was called up to serve in Malta. Di joined him until she found out she was pregnant with their first child Mark then came on back to home to live. Then followed Donna two years later then Joanne at which point they thought their family was complete until Delia made a surprise appearance 12 years later! Mike retired from the forces and worked locally at Tanton and Challice Poultry Farm then later he worked for Ready Mixed Concrete on Woodbury Common. They settled into village life becoming a big part of the community - setting up and organising the New Year’s Eve Dances for 15 years, The New Year’s Day “welly throwing” and they worked hard to keep the Bonfire on the Village Green for many years. Then unfortunately, aged only 53, Mike suffered a stroke and their lives changed forever. Di being Mike’s main carer for 21 years – she has done an amazing job and all her children and grandchildren want to say how much they admire and love her.

Jocelyn spent her early years living in Exton, Exmouth and Heavitree, before moving to London in her early twenties where she worked in publishing, John is a retired electrical/mechanical engineer. Jocelyn mentioned that she still has a copy of the Woodbury News from 1978 in which a report from Exton WI featured her mother as the proud winner of the cup for most points. On Sunday 2 February, twenty-five members of the Twinning Association went on the Avocet Cruise run by the RSPB to see not only avocets but other birds that live on the Exe Estuary. We were so lucky as Sunday was a beautiful day and thanks to the expertise of the two RSPB guides we had a thoroughly enjoyable and informative afternoon. Our next event is our annual Quiz Evening on Friday 7 March in the Village Hall, 7.00 for 7.30 start and costs £5 per person. WOODBURY VILLAGE HALL Improvements Sufficient money has now been raised, or promised, to enable us to make firm plans with the builder. More money is still needed, so please don’t give up on your fund-raising projects. The programme of work will start on 26 May 2014 with the construction of a new outer wall at the rear right-hand side, prior to knocking through from the inside of the stores, toilets and kitchen, to increase their space. This should not affect hall users, except for some unavoidable noise during working hours, until 1 July when the internal work to re-furbish the toilets and kitchen will start. From this date neither toilets nor kitchen will be available until work is due to be finished on 29 August. The disabled toilet remains available, and it is hoped that the small kitchen in the RBL Room will be made available for brewing teas and coffees. As far as storage goes the Pre-School store and the rear store will be cleared from 1 July. The roof storage needs to be tidied and items moved away from the side wall before 26 May. All un-needed equipment must also be removed. I want to take the opportunity to thank all those Clubs and Societies who have raised money for the Improvement Fund. The latest is the Thursday Morning Ladies Badminton Club/Tuesday Afternoon Tennis Club who held a fund-raising lunch and raised £154 – excellent for a small group. Please continue to support the Fund by buying Raffle Tickets for the pictures of Old Woodbury, on display at Winkworths Estate Agents, and also coming to future events. DEATHS Mrs Anne Allen (nee Rowsell) Sadly on 17 December 2013 - Anne, aged 59, passed away at home after a brave battle against cancer. Anne was born in Ottery St Mary in 1954. She was the youngest of four children to the late Jim and Kath Rowsell. Anne moved to Woodbury when she was just a few weeks old and spent her childhood growing up in the village. She attended Woodbury Primary School, making life-long friends. Anne’s life was always busy growing up in a family run business “Woodbury Garage”. Many people in the village will remember Anne as a child being out and about with her father Jim delivering paraffin and when she was older she would often help out to serve petrol (no self service back then). Anne attended Exmouth girls school until the age of 15. They she begun a hairdressing apprenticeship in Oliver’s hair salon in Exmouth where she trained as a successful hairdresser. Hairdressing was a life long career for Anne (which she enjoyed). In 1974 Anne married John and started her married life living in Topsham, where they had two children, Deborah and David. In 1983 Anne, John and their children moved back to village life in Gilbrook Road to make a family home where family and friends would never leave without being fed or watered! (by Anne - she was a wonderful cook). Anne’s funeral was held on 30 December 2013 at St Swithun’s Church where an overwhelming amount of people attended to pay their respects to her. Anne is now greatly missed as a wife, mother and granny to Lucie and to many others. Thank you to Rev Karen Spray for conducting the service and The Maltsters Arms for the refreshments. Anne Allen’s family would like to thank the many friends that have shown much kindness and support at this sad and difficult time, Budleigh Hospice team, Circle of Care, Marie Curie and Woodbury Surgery. It was Anne’s wish that a big “Thank You” was said to all her hairdressing clients for their loyal custom and friendship over the many years of her career. Donations raised at Anne’s funeral of £953 are being sent to Hospiscare and Marie Curie.

HOLY TRINITY CHURCH, WOODBURY SALTERTON Baptism Theodore Henry Montague Payne was baptised during the Communion Service on 2 February. In her address Revd Karen Spray said how appropriate it was that Teddy should be baptised on this particular Sunday when the church was celebrating the Presentation of Christ in the temple. We welcome Teddy into the family of the church and pray for him and his family. A wonderful gift The Church is extremely grateful to the Supper Club for their wonderful gift of £750 specifically towards the cost of repairs to the Church Floor. Church Quizzes Thanks to all who supported our Church Quizzes this year, to all who helped sell copies (especially Ruth Edwards and Claire Eastwood who sold copies in the School playground) and to Woodbury Salterton C of E School for duplicating the forms. There were a record number of entries submitted. There was tie for first place (all answers correct) between Carol Rowe from Exmouth and Ursula Gilmore from Maidstone in the adult quiz ‘It’s Your Body’ so a draw for the prize was made at the Family service and the prize went to Carol. There was also a tie in the Children’s Questions About Christmas’ quiz and it was decided to declare them joint first and share the prize money between Libby Pearson and Aidan Bown. Thanks to many generous donations and the slightly increased price the quizzes raised £400 for church funds. Family Service Debbie Jung took the Family Service in January. Libby Windle and Alice Rooke read the story of Jesus being lost and then found in the Temple and Debbie talked about this. Anya Corlett read a prayer and the children present all wrote their own prayers. Church Quiz Evening On a wet and windy February evening – Saturday the 8th – a large number of people turned out to support the Church Quiz evening in the village hall. The hall was soon buzzing as they divided into 9 teams, varying in size from 3 to 8 members. The Quiz Master was Glen Ridgeway from Exmouth who had compiled the questions and gave his services free of charge. At the end of the evening Andrew Merrick thanked him warmly and presented him with a small gift. The evening had been organised by The Friends of the Church led by Chairman Susan Merrick and much of the credit for the success of the evening was due to her efforts. The winning team of eight had chosen the name Pombear. They all received small prizes. A raffle swelled the profits from the evening to £281. The church is very grateful for this sum and delighted that so many people had an enjoyable and fun evening. WEDDING Matthew Cox from Woodbury married Amanda Wall originally from Kent on Saturday 21 December 2013 at St Swithun’s Church, Woodbury. The bride was attended by Laura her sister and chief bridesmaid, her two sistersin-law to be Stephanie and Fiona and two best friends Amy and Alexia. The flower girls were Alexia’s daughters Molly and Belle, Connor aged 18 months and the son of Oliver and Fiona was the pageboy. The rings were carried by Mandi’s Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Bella seen here in the arms of Reverend Karen Spray who conducted the service. Matt’s best man was his good friend, Andy Golding and the ushers were his brother Oliver and friend Sam Elstub. Matt is a qualified electrician and Mandi is a choreographer and dance teacher, they met in Tavistock where Mandi was living at the time. The couple honeymooned in Mexico and are looking forward to moving into the house they are buying in Exmouth.

WOODBURY SALTERTON C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL New Initiative A member of ICT, which in this context stand for the Initiative in Christian Education, is to visit our school once a month and take the Monday worship in church. Audrey Humphries took the January service, getting the children to act out the parable of the Good Samaritan. She will tell a story each month, relating these to our own school values. She is also running a lunch time club in school. Star of the Week At the weekly Friday afternoon Celebration Assembly in church teachers nominate a pupil in their class as Star of the Week and the Headteacher Mrs Louise Lowes presents stickers. Now pupils who run some of their own lunch time clubs - Performance, Dance, Art, Book and Diabolo Clubs – have started making their own Star of the Week in each club and making certificates which are presented by the Club leaders at the Friday assembly and those chosen also receive stick on stars from Mrs Lowes. It is good for the pupils to have the initiative, responsibility and confidence to run clubs for other children. At the weekly Friday assemblies Mrs Lowes also reads out citations from the school Special Book, in which teachers or often children themselves nominate pupils whose actions had demonstrated the school values. The School Notice Board in Church On their own notice board on the wall at the back of the church the School has been displaying some of the work on Religious Education done in school. The display includes several poems written by pupils. If you have not already done so, please take time to read these – another of the links between our Church School and our Church Community . LETTER TO THE EDITOR From Jean Carpenter A WARNING TO ALL PLANT LOVERS

A few years ago I was given a beautiful Kalanchoe (common name Flaming Katy) by some very good friends who have left the Village, and, until last year it had been growing very steadily in the greenhouse. One day I noticed a couple of below-par leaves and picked up the pot to remove them when, to my horror, the whole top of the plant fell down! There were one or two spindly roots showing, but, a few moments later the culprit was found! A small cream-coloured sickle-shaped grub with a brown head. All keen gardeners will recognise this description immediately – yes, it was the dreaded larva of a Vine Weevil! Where there is one, there are bound to be more and after inspection of the compost I found at least a dozen more! These little dears had been steadily chomping away at the roots and would have had the lot if left any longer. The vine weevil operates mainly at night – strangely, they are supposed to be all female! They are typical weevil-shaped with a square head, dark grey in colour and measuring about 15-20 cm. The eggs are laid next to the stem of their selected plant where they hatch out after a short time. Then they go to town on the victim. They are especially fond of fuchsias, begonias, pansies, violas and cyclamen, but have been know to attack other species. They only go for potted plants – in the garden there are nematodes which will feed on the grubs, thus controlling them. However, if you buy any of the plants mentioned, it is wise to inspect the roots thoroughly. I even wash off the existing compost, just to make sure and then re-pot. Don’t blame the nurseries, they cannot know the grubs have attacked. How to deal with the little monsters? Simple! Pick them out, place on a saucer or similar item and put out on the patio or lawn – the robin will have them in no time! To find the weevils, check during daytime, look under leaves and the sides of pots. If you find any, use the finger and thumb method to dispose of them! Just be warned and keep an eye open for trouble! Good Luck. And the Kalanchoe? Thriving! And it is now three plants, so I am feeling very pleased.

I heard of a reading of 380mm in part of Dorset which was astonishing being the sort of figure one might expect now and again in the Lake District. So, January’s figures were 184.5 mm (= 7.26 ins and 206% of average) with max/min temperatures of 12C/0C and only a couple of frosts. This was all set up by a progression of huge Atlantic depressions rolling in one after the other with frequent storm force winds from the S and SW – but this won’t be news to any of you! A kestrel stunned a blackbird on the patio this morning and flew off with it in its talons – another bit of nature in the raw. PJH. EXTON LADIES GROUP Our February meeting will not have taken place before the publication date for March copy. But next month there will be a full report on an illustrated talk about Exmouth prior to 1910, with various paintings and photos from that period. This year’s subscription will remain at £20 for the year. We are also looking for volunteers with the teas each month and to put out the chairs for each meeting. If you have not yet experienced the very enjoyable variety of our meetings, why not come and join us when you will be made very welcome. We meet in St Andrew’s Hall, Exton at 2.15 on the 2nd Thursday of each month. This also includes at least one outing a year.

EXTON GARDEN CLUB Our speaker in January was David Smale who gave us an insight into the history and growing of the crocus sativus which is the one to produce saffron. The first corms are thought to have come from Greece this is where our first imports came from into the town of Saffron Walden, it wasn’t known as Saffron Walden then the name was changed when the value of the crop was realised. In the 1500’s saffron was largely used as a dye and for medicinal uses, Henry vii and Ann Boleyn used it for hair colouring and also for their clothes during the period called light mourning this was pale yellow. David has been growing these crocus for about ten years and as he lives in Essex this is where he started and where most of his saffron is produced. It was about four years ago that he was approached by a chef in Axminster who wanted to source his supply locally that he started to grow it in Exton. He now supplies River Cottage, Fortnum & Mason and other West End delicatessens and is also experimenting with various recipes and adding it to beer and gin, the beer wasn’t good but the gin looks promising. Crocus sativus flower in the Autumn and harvesting takes place in October and November, it is a very labour intensive crop as everything has to be done by hand. The flowers are gathered and then the stamens removed as soon as possible and dried in a warm airy situation, then they should be stored in the dark so he uses small tins or dark coloured glass jars. Apparently the pollen is a narcotic so he often finds drugged bees in the flowers, fortunately this doesn’t have a long term effect so the bees aren’t harmed. David had hoped to have samples with him but his sister, who was bringing them was turned back at Waterloo Station due to the flooding. David is very enthusiastic about saffron and keen to promote English grown good quality as opposed to imported which is inferior, he also wants to broaden the ways it can be used. The Chairman closed the meeting reminding members of the AGM in February.
