Welcome to Vets Fest 2023!
We are all thrilled to have you here.
As always with Rugby it is a huge team effort – today wouldn’t be possible without us all working together so if you are a volunteer, player, official, sponsor or spectator you have all played your part to make the day a huge success. A special mention must go to the West Midlands Region who have hosted and organised the event alongside our amazing National Rugby & Communities Manager, Matt Mitchell.
Today’s rugby will help to change lives in a number of ways. The vital funds raised will help children and young people up and down the UK and Ireland facing disability, disadvantage and disengagement. The funds you have raised will be spent in your region. The camaraderie and fun that you all will have whilst you represent your teams will be long lasting and stay with you forever.
Welcome to the Wooden Spoon family – play safe, have fun and enjoy your day.
Sarah Webb CEO, Wooden SpoonFirstly a huge thank you to you all personally from myself and the Wooden Spoon Team.
Welcome from the chairman of Moseley RFC
A very warm welcome to Birmingham Moseley Rugby Club in a season when we celebrate our 150th anniversary.
Following the success of last year’s event, it is a pleasure to host the Vets Festival once again this year.
The rugby family is a close-knit community and many long lasting friendships have begun on the rugby pitch. It is a pleasure to be able to play a part in enabling players to come together, play the game we all love, socialise, whilst contributing to the Wooden Spoon charity.
Wooden Spoon does wonders in raising much needed funds to transform the lives of children and young people,
something that we feel very passionate about as a club.
At this point in our history, it is an opportunity to look back on what has gone before and show today the power that rugby has in being able to bring people together to positively impact the lives of others in our community.
Thank you all for contributing to this very worthy cause and have an enjoyable day.

Message from British & Irish National Spoon Vets
Mens Captain – James Crouch
It’s amazing to return to Vets Fest for the third consecutive year. Again the opportunity today to pull on the white, blue, red and green hoops (and our own region’s local WS colours on the reverse of our sponsored match shirts thanks to our kit provider O’Neills) will fill us with pride. Our goal, once again, is to raise as much money as possible to support projects benefiting children in both our local communities and nationwide.
We look forward to our next fixture against the Army masters at the Army Rugby Union stadium, Aldershot on the 13th October, and we are already in the planning stages for a thrilling Spring tour to France. Our previous French tours have been a blast, brimming with rugby action and unforgettable moments. However, what happens on tour, stays on tour, so enough said about that.
Once again I hope everyone will enjoy the day, enjoy the rugby – but please make this a launchpad towards volunteering for fundraising initiatives in your respective regions. Whether it’s participating in a sponsored event, joining a quiz, or taking part in a WS matchday where club players contribute by wearing WS socks during a game – every effort counts.
Yours in the spirit of rugby, Crouchy
If you’re interested in representing the national team, please don’t hesitate for Wooden Spoon, at rugby@woodenspoon.org.uk
Captain, National Spoon Vets Co-Chair, Essex Wooden Spoon RegionMessage from former Red Rose and Wooden Spoon Ambassador Gill Burns MBE
Playing rugby was a real pleasure for me and having retired from playing serious rugby regularly I missed it greatly. However having the opportunity to play occasionally in the Wooden Spoon Vets Fest and for the British and Irish National Spoon Vets team is a real privilege. We all enjoy that great feeling of being part of a team again and it’s all done in a way where it’s the charity that enjoys the real win, not just the players. Fun is had by all… and it’s good rugby at a much slower pace which makes it so accessible.
I’ve supported Wooden Spoon since the 1990s as it’s such a great charity. I was a teacher for 32 years and worked with many students with special needs. Being able to help this charity supporting kids with disabilities and those coming from a disadvantaged background sits really well with me.
Vets Fest is an annual blast for us all but I would like to encourage as many of you as possible to sign up for the B&I National vets side too. Playing another 2 or 3 charity games per season is great
fun and not a massive time consuming commitment. It’s an opportunity to play amongst different players from different clubs, counties and countries.
There is also an exciting tour to France in the Spring next year.
to reach out to Matt Mitchell, the National Rugby & Communities Manager rugby@woodenspoon.org.uk to register your interest.
AROUND THE REGIONS
Thank you to everyone who is participating in Vets Fest this year. Here is a snapshot of some of the projects that Wooden Spoon has been funding across the regions.
SCOTLAND
Frame Running
Scotland’s first frame running hub has opened at Scotstoun Stadium. The pioneering facility, foundation funded by Wooden Spoon Scotland will help young people with limited mobility to access frame equipment, become mobile, and foster independence through sport.
We are Beams
A Wooden Spoon sensory playground at We are Beams which provides services for the whole family to support children with special needs.
Ciaran, has multiple conditions, including Down’s Syndrome, diabetes, coeliacs disease, ASD and ADHD. We are Beams in Kent offers Ciaran overnight respite, school holiday camps and a support worker.
“Frame running has completely changed my life. It has given me so many opportunities over the years I never thought I would ever have. The hub will mean many more children with limited mobility will be given the chance to participate in recreation and sport and discover the joy of frame running like I did.”
“As Ciaran’s needs are complex, this makes his behaviour challenging, there are few opportunities for him to access fun things in a way that he can cope. This is where Beams has had a huge impact on our family life. For him he has fun away from us, gets to be himself and learns some independence.”
Terri, Ciaran’s mum
For Terri, the support allows her to recharge and spend precious family time with Ciaran’s younger sister Rebecca.
Gavin Drysdale, Frame runner Gold medallist at the Para Athletics World championshipsLANCASHIRE
The Outlook Trust
The Outlook Trust provide adventure Sports activities for Blind and Partially Sighted children. Wooden Spoon Lancashire has funded a second hand sailing boat. Ellen, 17 lost her central vision when she was nine years old. She has peripheral vision, so can move around with a cane – It’s a hidden disability as she doesn’t look blind.
Dorset, Wiltshire and Hampshire
The Wave Project
“I’ve never thought about sailing before. I have struggled with being social, so it’s helped with my confidence. Getting out on the lake is always really nice. It’s relaxing to hear the movement of the water while we are on the boat.”
EllenWooden Spoon Dorset, Wiltshire & Hampshire has supported The Wave Project, which uses surf therapy to support youngsters experiencing anxiety, depression, disability, family breakdown or bullying. Alice is a young carer, her dad has mental health issues and epilepsy. At this age, she really feels the responsibility. Alice was referred by her school to The Wave Project.
Our regional volunteer groups are looking for help to run some of their events. If you are interested to get more involved with your local Wooden Spoon group, please email regions@woodenspoon.org.uk
“We surf, bodyboard, swim, or paddleboard if the waves aren’t very big. We paddleboard to the buoy – once, there were jellyfish out there, the kids were going crazy about them! “All the volunteers give you applause when you catch a wave or get close to catching one. If people aren’t confident, they always say well done just for getting in the water.”
Alice
Please donate here to support more young people like Gavin, Ciaran, Ellen and Alice.

Olly’s family continue to campaign for stricter online laws and The Online Safety Bill which aims to lay down rules
in law about how online platforms should deal with harmful content.
Maddy, a vibrant 20 year old who loved playing sport started her rugby career at university, tragically lost her life after developing sepsis in hospital after an injury in a rugby match.
Maddy’s Mark charity has been set up in Maddy’s name to foster & build young women’s confidence, self-image & self-belief through the values of the rugby community.
We are honoured to be joined by Olly’s parents, Stuart & Amanda and Maddy’s parents Simon & Karen today.
Today the men’s and women’s teams will be playing for the Olly Stephens Memorial cup and the Maddy Lawrence Memorial cup.
THE tournament
Please see the schedule to find out where and when your team is playing.
All Rugby final trophies will be presented immediately after the final whistle. Overall winners will be presented at the Awards ceremony
The overall winner of Vets Fest 2023 will be the team with the highest combined ranking in both rugby and fundraising.
The overall victors will take away two very special memorial trophies celebrating the lives of two wonderful young people sadly no longer with us.
The Men’s Overall Winners Trophy is the Olly Stephens Memorial Cup sponsored by Hadene.
The Women’s Overall Winners Trophy is the Maddy Lawrence Memorial Cup and is sponsored by Hadene.

ABOUT O’Neills
O’Neills have been a tremendous supporter of Wooden Spoon for many years now. They have designed and produced rugby kit for Wooden Spoon teams at every level from our Wooden Spoon Marauders playing on the elite Super 7s Series to local village teams. O’Neills Wooden Spoon kit has been tested to the limit on Mount Everest and worn by the Barbarians at Twickenham – whatever the ask O’Neills have always delivered great kit and an amazing service.
O’Neills have once again produced a reversible two-sided shirt. On one side the distinctive Wooden Spoon colours representing the Home Nations. The colours of each nation appear in the chronological order the Home Unions were founded: White, Blue Red and Green.
On the other side a regional shirt with local colours along with local sponsors all of whom have contributed to the charity so their local branch of Wooden Spoon can support local projects to affect the lives of vulnerable children and young people.
It should be noted that this Vets Fest Reversible is a “single skin” fabric and there will be a small amount of detail seen from side to side. Hopefully the shirts will be well received and enhance today’s event.
For anyone wanting to contact O’Neills with an enquiry on their supply, service and products available, please contact Peter Kennedy – pk@oneillsuk.com – 07834 658908.

THANK YOU
Wooden Spoon would like to sincerely thank all of our corporate supporters and our wonderful volunteers who have given up their time to support Vets Fest 2023 – You are an amazing group of people and we can’t thank you enough.
A big Thank you to Swanshurst School who have kindly allowed us to use their rugby pitch today.
Some think in silos but we see the bigger picture. We use our years of unrivalled experience to spot gaps others miss and expertly build this into a solution that, like your business, can adapt, grow and expand.
Putting you at the centre
We’ve seen how a siloed approach to security can result in confusion, cost and risk. It’s why we take care to see the whole picture before we precision-configure our security solution.
The optimal combination of tech, human skills and our comprehensive
portfolio of protective services give you a seamless, end-to-end security solution. You can rely on our insights and expertise to help guide you to which services you need to fulfil your business potential.
Everything you need to keep your people, property and assets safe.
