ADVANCEMENT REPORT Making a difference for the next generation of successful young women

2009 - 2010

Dear Families, Alumnae, and Friends of Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart, Recently, I read a very thought-provoking reflection on these lines from Jean Baptiste Massieu. A missionary received a gift of a beautiful seashell from a gracious young girl on a Pacific island. The missionary, grateful for this beautiful gift, asks where this young woman found the shell. She explained that she had walked many miles to a bay across the island to find it, as this was the only place where such seashells existed. As the missionary acknowledges her tremendous efforts, the young girl, beaming with joy, answers, “Long walk, part of gift.” The parable reveals the importance of giving of oneself and what a profound gift that is. The faces of our young women who claim our school as their second home and the many accomplishments that attest to the inherent values of our 209-year Sacred Heart tradition of education remind us that what we do is not only significant, but in the words of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, truly transformative. You make this transformative experience possible for the young women who cross our threshold each morning and receive their diplomas after four years of serious study. You make possible an education that prepares young women for untold challenges in college, university, and a career beyond ivy walls. You make possible an experience that changes hearts and minds and prepares our students to lead and serve others. As we approach another year of Sacred Heart education at Woodlands Academy, we find the Sacred Heart Goals and Criteria abundantly displayed in the accomplishments of the past year. In 2009-2010, Woodlands Academy:

+ Placed the 46 members of the Class of 2010 in 120 colleges of their choice with 62 scholarships totaling more than $813,000.

in the IHSA state tennis tournament; participated in golf and crew; an athlete named Independent School League (ISL) Player of the Year in Tennis; earned All State honors in field hockey and tennis and All-Conference accolades in volleyball,

+ Heralded 37% of the Class of 2010 for being named Illinois State Scholars. + Broke ground on a new state-of-the-art Science Center. + Distributed nearly $772,185 to deserving students in the form of financial aid.

We Salute the Graduating Class of 2010! Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart graduated its Senior Class on June 10 in the Woodlands Academy Chapel. The 151st commencement ceremony was part of a liturgy celebrated by Reverend Richard Jakubik of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Wilmette. Woodlands English Department faculty Erin Brysiewicz provided the Call to Worship, and Maria Lousia Swift ’10 presented the senior reflection. The Woodlands Academy Class of 2010 is represented by 46 exceptional young women who will distinguish themselves this fall at their respective colleges and universities. They include a member of the prestigious Daily Herald 2009-2010 Lake County Leadership Team, seventeen Illinois State Scholars, two National Merit Commended Scholars, a Chicago Tribune All-Academic Team finalist, and a national award-winning choral director.
