FIRST THINGS FIRST Are you sporting a bright + shiny rock and overwhelmed about where to begin planning your wedding? We chatted with Randi Lawrence Moore about what the Àrst Àve things a bride should do aIter the big knee drop.

Perfect!

FIRST The Àrst thing a bride should do is hire a wedding planner. A good wedding planner that matches your personality, style and budget can assist you in ensuring your wedding planning experience is stress free. SECOND Set a date! Setting a wedding date will help to guide your wedding planning duties and allow everyone involved to get as excited as you are about the big day!

FOURTH The fourth thing a bride should do is set a preliminary guest list. A good guest list also helps to create a Áawless budget. Work on your guest list with your future hubby as well as family. This helps everyone feel engaged in the planning process. FIFTH Create a vision board. The best thing about getting married is creating a vision that matches the personality for both you and your Àance. My advice is to create a vision board with your Àance and take that vision board to every vendor meeting. This will ensure your vendors stay close to your overall vision for the wedding. ABOUT Randi Lawrence Moore is one of the industry’s most experienced wedding planners who strives to create organized, elegant and astonishing weddings. Randi Lawrence Moore Weddings is a full service luxury destination wedding planning service dedicated to full wedding planning and helping brides have a stress free wedding planning experience.

THIRD The third thing a bride should do is set a budget. Set a good, reasonable budget and understand how to use your budget. This is essential to ensure you can get all the bells and whistles.

SHOP TALK:

Meet Keri Ann Reardon of Makeup by Keri Ann Meet Keri Ann She s been a makeup artist for years Her goal is for every woman who sits in her chair to see how beautiful they are Get to know the friendly face behind the makeup and see what advice she has for brides looking for a makeup artist for their wedding day WB: How did you get started as a makeup artist? KA: I have been working with makeup and skin care products for almost 20 years. My cystic acne problems led me to the cosmetics industry where I really learned about skin care and starting a good beauty regimen. Who can resist all the fun makeup colors available? I attended workshops and honed my makeup application skills. Then my friends and other professionals encouraged me to use my artistic skills to start a freelance business. It's been the best decision I have ever made! WB: What advice do you have for brides considering booking a makeup artist (MUA)? KA: Meet your makeup artist and do a trial run Àrst. Ask yourself these Tuestions: Is your artist professional? Does your MUA show up on time and look professional? Do you like the MUA's makeup application and style? Do you feel comfortable having your MUA work on your mom or grandma?

beautifully. Even a few lashes at the outside corner of your eyes make a big difference! WB: What is your goal as a makeup artist? I want to help every woman who sits in my chair to see how beautiful they are! I also want her to leave with one or two tips she can take home to use everyday. WB: Give us some insight into the makeup process on the day-of the wedding. KA: When using a makeup artist, it is best to arrive with clean and moisturized skin. Try to avoid products with sunscreen on your wedding day. Relax when you are sitting in the makeup and hair chair. Pass your phone off to someone else to answer Tuestions. This is your time to be still and feel pampered!

WB: What makeup tips do you have for brides? KA: Look like yourself. If you don't wear a lot of makeup every day, you don't need to overdo it on your wedding day. Makeup really does make a difference in your appearance, so I believe every bride should wear some makeup to enhance her natural features. However, makeup should not make you feel uncomfortable. Wear false lashes! They photograph so Woodlands Bride / Spring 2014

Creating The Perfect Vows, Step by Step with Chaplain Tara Dorroh Most brides dive into so many details in the months leading up to their big day. But wait, what about the vows? Chapain Tara Dorroh takes us through the vow ceremony, step by step, with tips from her experience performing countless ceremonies for couples in the Houston area. Many couples leave the vow writing up to their minister, but these are your vows and your input is important. As a chaplain, I start every couple out with a set of vows, like a blank canvas, and then let them add their story and love to the written words. First, include a set of vows called the Declaration of Intent. The intent statement is one that is usually read by the minister and usually sounds something like, “John, will you take Mary to be your wife, to love her, cherish her and be faithful to her as long as you both shall live.” After each intent statement, the couple with declare, “I will.” After the Intent statement, have your favorite scripture or poem read. The most meaningful words you can hear at this point in the ceremony is something about the couple. My preference is to have the couple write a letter to each other—stating how they met, what made them fall in love with each other and the things that keep them in love. Get creative, put your personality into it and have fun! At this point in the ceremony comes the second set of vows—something like, ‘Mary, from this day forward, I take you to be my wife.’ You can 16 Woodlands Bride / Spring 2014

stop there to keep it simple or add things like, “I promise to encourage you, protect you, etc.” You will repeat after your clergy for this section of the vows, so add as much as you like and make it speak from the heart. If the couple wants to do a sand ceremony or the lighting of the unity candles, this is a great time. There are many demonstrations to choose from, depending on your faith or cultural customs. Now comes the rings. I like to ask the best man for the couples’ rings and then I like to say a blessing over the rings before the groom places the ring on the bride’s hand Àrst. Again, you can keep it simple with, "Mary, I give you this ring today as a sign of my vow." You can stop with that phrase or add "With all that I am and all that I have, I honor you," or something similar. The closing remark is made by the minister to confer that the couple have declared their vows before God, family and friends, and that they are ordained through and by the state to pronounce the couple husband and wife. The couple kiss and the minister introduces them as Mr. and Mrs. to the audience. However the bride and groom want the tone and emotion of the ceremony is exactly the way it should be. Your goal is to have one set of vows in your life, so put as much energy into helping create that special ceremony as you do all the other details of your wedding day!

Local Love Stories LAUREN + ROB Photography by Kasey Lynn Photography

Lauren and Rob's love story is how a blind date led to an enchanting engagement. Lauren shared the details of their romance and future wedding. The Story "My sister set us up on a blind date. I was so nervous! We went out to eat and just started talking from there. I was still at Baylor and he was working in New Mexico (he had just graduated from Texas Tech), so we dated long distance for a long time. He eventually moved to the Houston area and after I Ànished nursing school, I moved down here as well. Now we are Ànally in the same place."

The Proposal "Well, we were spending Labor Day weekend in Fredericksburg just hanging out and we got up early to hike Enchanted Rock before it got too crowded. I climbed on top of a rock to take a picture and asked him to get me down. He started teasing me and stalling. Next thing I knew he was down on one knee. It all happened so fast I can't remember all the details!" The Plans "We are planning to get married at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Fredericksburg. Our colors are gold, blush and champagne. We just want to have a simple wedding with family and close friends!" Woodlands Bride / Spring 2014

EMILY + JOE

Emily is a Texas A&M graduate with plans to become a teacher. Her and her Àance, Joe, are highschool sweethearts with a love for the outdoors and their chocolate lab, Gus. They are planning a casual, budget-friendly wedding in November 2014 at Amber Springs. The Story “Joe and I are high school sweethearts. I needed a date to the homecoming dance my senior year. A friend introduced us and it was an instant attraction. He is a year younger than me but that didn’t stop us from keeping our relationship going through the rest of high school and all through college, even though much of the time we were in different cities.” The Proposal “I was expecting him to propose to me, but not as soon as he did. He took me to the Waterway in The Woodlands, under the bridge by the 20 Woodlands Bride / Spring 2014

waterfall. He had it all planned; three of my mom’s friends were hidden in various places waiting to take pictures of the magical moment. I always told him that I didn’t care how he popped the Tuestion as long as somebody was there to take pictures of it, and he remembered! He also surprised me by calling my family and having them come and join us for dinner afterwards. My brothers both drove in from out of town to share in the exciting news along with us.” The Plans “Our colors are going to be navy and coral with hints of pearly white and burlap. I don’t have a particular theme but it is deÀnitely going to be a more casual wedding. I am a frugal shopper so I am doing my best to have a wedding that is budget friendly. I am deÀnitely looking for items to use in my wedding that I can either reuse or resell. One example of this is that I found the wedding dress that I love for only $150!”

KAYLIN + MICHAEL Photography by Leslie Cervantez Photography

Kaylin and her Àance, Michael, are students in the Houston area set to graduate early this year. Kaylin plans to become a crime scene technican after school. She enjoys baking and crocheting as well as playing golf with her Àance. They are planning a December winter wonderland wedding at Heather’s Glen in Conroe. The Story “Michael and I met on the last day of my 8th grade year, when my brother sent him to pick me up from school one day. A little less than a year later, on December 20, 2006, Michael asked me to be his girlfriend while we were ice skating in The Woodlands.” The Proposal “It was almost 7 years later, on November 23, 2013, when Michael took me to dinner at The Woodlands Waterway for the Lighting of the Doves. I walked down the entire waterway in 22 Woodlands Bride / Spring 2014

high heels that were killing me. I even begged at one point to just take the boat back. I’m so happy we didn’t because once we walked back under the doves, Michael got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Of course, I said yes!” The Plans “For our wedding date, we decided to keep our 'anniversary date' so that we will be married 8 years from the date he asked me out. Our color scheme is white with glittery silver and very pale pink. The theme is a winter garden wonderland wedding. The ceremony and reception will be at Heather’s Glen. It worked perfectly with our wonderland theme!”

OLIVIA + AARON Photography by Derrick Bryant Photography

Olivia and Aaron kept bumping into each other, until one day they decided it must be fate. Their engagement story is a Woodlands Bride favorite. The Story "We met through a mutual friend. I actually tried to talk my friend into dating him because I thought he was so good looking! After we met, we just kept coming across each other. We would run into each other at a Huntsville hangout and parties. I also ended up working with his best friend. Aaron decided we should start hanging out on purpose. We went out on Valentine's Day and he asked me to be his girlfriend on February 16, 2009." The Proposal "For our engagement, Aaron secretly took my parents to dinner months before our 4 year anniversary and asked for their blessing. He made a Facebook group with our close friends and family to invite them to Grimaldi's to celebrate after he asked me. Aaron told me

we were going to dinner. When we got to the Waterway, he passed the restaurant and took me to a more secluded part. He said he wanted to take a walk with me. As we were walking, he acted like he noticed this little waterfall and asked if we could go look at it. When we got down by the waterfall, he said he had something to ask me and got down on his knee. Our best friends popped out from a hiding spot. They were recording my reaction! I wanted to call all of our friends and family after he asked, but they told me not to because it would take away from spending our time at dinner. We got to the restaurant and everyone was there to celebrate!" The Plans "We are getting married in July at April Sound in Montgomery. We both love being by the water so the venue was perfect. Our colors are yellow and grey. We are still planning a million things for it! We have very supportive family and friends and they are helping a ton!" Woodlands Bride / Spring 2014
