“Madame Butterfly” chronicles the story of beautiful Cio-Cio San, Butterfly, who renounces her faith and her family when she marries the handsome Lieutenant Pinkerton. Pinkerton is actually betrothed to an American woman and has no intention of staying married to Butterfly. Although she believes he will return, instead his American wife returns to claim Butterfly and Pinkerton’s son to raise him as her own. The story ends with Butterfly realizing the truth and tragedy ensues. “Madame Butterfly” is a stunning achievement in neoclassical ballet that has been an international success, with performances on three continents. Before the performance of “Madame Butterfly”, enjoy two stunning short classical showpieces of the virtuosity and skill of Houston Ballet’s dancers. The pieces include the duet from the 19th century classic Flower Festival Genzano and the wedding pas de deux for Aurora and her prince from the beloved Sleeping Beauty. Arrive early for pre-concert activities in the North Plaza beginning at 7 p.m. with The Pavilion Partners, Fidelity Investments, Century 21 Realty Partners, Woodforest National Bank and Renewal by Andersen. At the ballet, guests are welcome to have a picnic in their seat or on the hill. Keep in mind that beverages cannot be brought into The Pavilion. Sitting on the hill? Lawn chairs are provided free for this concert and all performing arts events.

Houston Grand Opera Showcases One of the Greatest Love Stories of All Times May 24 • 8 p.m. An impetuous love, the romance of Paris, and the pain of regret all unfold in “La bohème,” one of the greatest love stories of all time. The opera is composed by Giacomo Puccini to a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa and based on the novel “Scènes de la vie de bohème” by Henri Murger. Houston Grand Opera returns to The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s stage after eight years with this popular opera May 24. Tickets are $20 for orchestra seating. Mezzanine and lawn seating are free courtesy of The Wortham Foundation. Tickets are not required for free seating. Gates open at 7 p.m. “La bohème” is the story of Rodolfo and Mimi who meet by chance in the poet’s atelier and fall immediately in love. Mimi joins his group of impoverished, generous friends. They weather break-ups and inevitable reunions, but their love proves fragile as the light of a single candle when they confront the harsh realities of bohemian life. Four of the most talented young singers in America, all Houston Grand Opera Studio members or alumni, perform in this special presentation, along with Houston Grand Opera’s renowned chorus and orchestra. Come early for Pavilion Talk, a free pre-performance discussion led by noted music scholar Ira J. Black that provides insight into the evening’s program. Pavilion Talk takes place from 7:15-7:45 p.m. Other pre-concert activities in the North Plaza by The Pavilion Partners, Fidelity Investments, Century 21 Realty Partners, Woodforest National Bank and Renewal by Andersen begin at 7 p.m.

President's Message

I am pleased to introduce myself as the new president of The Pavilion Partners. I have been on the board for four years and am honored that I get to serve as the president this year. I am proud to say I grew up in the area graduating from Oak Ridge High School in 1996. While in high school I worked in security at The Pavilion for two years. It has certainly helped me in my career and being involved with the volunteer arm of The Pavilion. After high school I went to Lamar University and obtained my degree in Marketing in 2001. After college I moved back to The Woodlands and eventually got into the family business. My father started Robichau’s Jewelry in 1986 and I have been with the business for 11 years. As a company we have been very active in the community in many aspects. I love live music of all genres and I am awed by the talent we have performing at The Pavilion. I am eager to get started and hope to grow the Partners membership this year. We are always looking for great volunteers, so I hope you will consider joining me and the rest of the Partners volunteers.

Give Your Heart to the Arts as a Pavilion Partner Performing Arts Event Volunteer The Pavilion Partners, the official volunteer organization of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, is looking for volunteers with a passion for the arts. Partners is hosting a volunteer information meeting for anyone interested in becoming a performing arts event volunteer. The meetings takes place every month at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. The next meeting is set for May 2. Volunteers may choose to attend the 1 p.m. or 6 p.m. meeting. Each session lasts approximately an hour and a half. Reservations are required. A mini-tour of The Pavilion is included as well as door prizes and refreshments. “This meeting is a great way to find out more about our volunteer program and how you can be involved in the events at The Pavilion,” said Leslie Williams, volunteer and special events coordinator for The Pavilion. “Of course there are a variety of other ways you can volunteer with Partners including fundraising, scholarships, membership and more.” Launched in 1998, Partners is a dedicated group of volunteers who share a love for the arts. This dynamic group offers opportunities to volunteer at The Pavilion’s performing arts events and educational outreach programs. As a performing arts event volunteer, you can help in many ways including manning the Instrument Petting Zoo and Arts & Crafts booths, ushering and handing out programs at events like the Houston Symphony and Houston Ballet. Performing arts event volunteers also help at educational outreach programs like Musical Scores, Fine Arts Education and Children’s Festival. To be a performing arts event volunteer, you must join Partners. Memberships start at $50 for individuals and $100 for couples. For more information on meeting dates or to RSVP, contact Leslie Williams at 281-210-1125 or lwilliams@woodlandscenter.org. For more information on volunteer opportunities with Partners visit www.woodlandscenter.org/partners.

A successful fundraiser does not happen without the hard work and dedication of a great committee. The Pavilion Partners 15th Annual Wine Dinner was a huge success primarily due to the committee led by co-chairs Candi Glenn and Randy Lowry. As the planning of the event began, the committee celebrated a milestone with all of the underwriting opportunities for the event sold-out for the first time. Several members of the committee not only solicited donations, but personally contributed as underwriters of the event. Most of the work was done behind the scenes prior to the event. Every aspect from the centerpieces to the wine charms to the auction items, were bought, made or solicited by different members of the committee. Some committee members even spent a day of labor decorating and wrapping each silent auction gift basket. The food and wine down, to the cork that held each guest’s name at the seats were all carefully selected and prepared. Volunteering for the Wine Dinner committee is a commitment that transcends the evening helping to fulfill the dreams of students who have made their own commitment to the arts. The Wine Dinner committee members included Chardelle Adelson, Rodney Anderson, Joy Borneman, Beth Butler, Sylvia Caracio, Dixie Cope, Keith Ferry, Janene Hemmen, Lisa Koetting, JoAnne Lowry, George Lindahl, Richard Jones, Judy Jones, Kelly Messenger, Brenda Mizell, Kathryn Painter and Shelli Moran. If you are a current member of Partners and interested in serving on the Wine Dinner or other fundraising committees, please contact Leslie Williams at lwilliams@woodlandscenter.org or 281-210-1125.
