“Ghost Dances,” a signature piece for Houston Ballet, mixes traditional South American folk dances with Christopher Bruce’s highly athletic, contemporary choreography. The contrast between dance styles challenges both the dancers and audience members to recognize the beauty in this combination of traditional and innovative choreography.

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion welcomes the 55 dancers of Houston Ballet back to the outdoor stage for a mixed repertoire program. Join us for a stimulating evening of varied works with Houston Ballet on Thursday, October 1 at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale now. Orchestra seating is $20, with free mezzanine and lawn seating courtesy of Cullen Trust for the Performing Arts. The Mixed Repertory Program will sample pieces from the company’s recent performances of “Tapestry,” “Reveal” and “Ghost Dances,” artfully transitioning between contrasting theatrical works. Audience members will be taken on a journey through the creative mind of Artistic Director Stanton Welch in his artful direction and combination of the varied components of the mixed repertory program. The story of “Tapestry” follows Welch’s concept of his dance company paralleling a tapestry. Welch tells a story with each movement of the company, just as a tapestry weaves an intricate design with each colorful thread.

Artistic Director Stanton Welch joined Houston Ballet in 2003 and has worked tirelessly to challenge and improve the Ballet. The Houston Ballet has reached new heights in its most recent seasons, far exceeding previous expectations and catching the attention of new audiences. Pre-performance activities begin at 7 p.m. in the North Plaza with Fidelity Investments, Renewal by Andersen, Century 21 Realty Partners, The Pavilion Partners, Audi of America and Woodforest National Bank. Guests can register to win Tommy Bahama’s “Best Seat in the House” drawing, which includes dinner for four at The Pavilion’s next performing arts event.

Less than a week before coming to The Pavilion, the Houston Ballet company will perform the world premiere of Garret Smith’s “Reveal” in Houston. Smith, a former dancer in the company, intends to show audiences “the challenge of truly revealing one’s self and daring to look into the mirror and accept who you are, not how others have framed you.” Guided by Smith’s choreography, audiences will face their own ideas of self-reflection and vulnerability.

Guests are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy at their seats or on the hill during this performance. However, beverages are not permitted inside the gates of The Pavilion. Guests seated on the hill are welcome to rent lawn chairs free for this event.

Get ready for tricks and treats at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s Hocus Pocus Pops featuring the Houston Symphony Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 for orchestra seating. Mezzanine and lawn seating are free courtesy of H-E-B. Tickets are not required for free seating. Gates open at 6 p.m.

Register to win monstrous gift baskets provided by H-E-B at the event. Bring any H-E-B receipt from Oct. 1-23, 2015, to Hocus Pocus Pops. Receipts must be brought to Hocus Pocus Central in the North Plaza prior to the performance (between 6 and 7:15 p.m.) on Oct. 23. The drawing takes place on the Main Stage before the concert.

Conductor Lucas Waldin mesmerizes the audience with a nightmarish performance of horrifying horns, bewitching bassoons and chilling cellos. The Houston Symphony will delight audiences with selections from “The Wizard of Oz,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Jurassic Park,” “Pocahontas” and “Aladdin.”

In addition to the hauntingly fun Hocus Pocus Pops, the 5th Annual “Spooktacular” Creative Writing Contest is sure to be a Halloween treat. All ghosts and ghouls in grades K-12 are invited to create an original scary story to submit to the “Spooktacular” Creative Writing Contest for a chance to win the grand prize. To enter, visit www.woodlandscenter.org.

The first 100 kids to check in at Hocus Pocus Central in the North Plaza get the chance to march across the stage in the Goblin Parade. Wristbands are required to participate in the Goblin Parade. Haunting the plazas before dusk are pre-concert activities starting when the ghoulish gates open at 6 p.m. Participate in enchanted events to win “spooktacular” prizes at BOOths offered by H-E-B, The Pavilion Partners, Fidelity Investments, Century 21 Realty Partners, Renewal by Anderson, Woodforest National Bank and Audi of America, official automobile of The Pavilion. If you dare, hop onto the Great Pumpkin Express and carve out some great (or gruesome) memories on The Pavilion’s haunted grounds. Train rides begin at 5:30 p.m. in The Pavilion’s Gold Lot.

One winner from each grade will be selected by Simply Tutoring to win four VIP tickets to Hocus Pocus Pops with the Houston Symphony (including a Pavilion garage parking pass and four passes for the Woodforest Bank VIP Club) on October 23, a $50 Amazon gift card and have their spooky story published in the Hocus Pocus Pops program. From the pool of finalists, one story will be picked from a cauldron as the grand prize winner. The selected author will receive an Amazon Kindle Fire and their essay will be printed in The Courier and The Villager newspapers. Prizes underwritten by Simply Tutoring.

‘Tis the Season for Holly Jolly Jingle December 3

Our 26th season has been very busy, with more than 75 events and drawing more than 500,000 guests. The Pavilion is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is the Summer Home of the Houston Symphony, Home Away from Home of the Houston Ballet and a presenting venue for the Houston Grand Opera and the Texas Music Festival Orchestra. We are also the major presenter of contemporary concerts during The Pavilion season. During our off-season this year, be on the lookout for a major construction project taking place on our site. Our current 6,000-square-foot House of Blues Hospitality Tent will be replaced with a brand new 21,000-square-foot permanent building. This project is a co-venture with The Woodlands Township and will include a permanent ice skating rink. The ice skating rink will be operated by The Township during The Pavilion’s off season from mid-November to mid-March. During The Pavilion’s season we will continue to operate the House of Blues where all guests are invited to enjoy a private club-like atmosphere before, during and after a concert. We will also have additional meeting room space available to host other private meetings and banquets. We still have many events left this year including Houston Ballet, HSO’s Hocus Pocus Pops, 20th Annual Children’s Festival and Holly Jolly Jingle. You can find more information about these events and other events inside this publication. I want to thank our guests who supported our events this season and our sponsors, The Pavilion board of directors, Pavilion Partners volunteers and Pavilion staff for the wonderful job in making 2015 a spectacular season.

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion presents Holly Jolly Jingle on December 3 at 7:30 p.m. This festive event includes a musical celebration of the season and fun winter activities for all ages. Tickets are not required for this free event thanks to the generosity of sponsors Talisman USA, Woodforest National Bank and KPMG, LLP. It’s the most wonderful time of the year to celebrate the coming holiday season! Join us at The Pavilion for an evening of merriment featuring musicians of all ages. Bring the family to support your community’s fine arts students in their performance of familiar medleys. Then, sing along to classic seasonal tunes with a certain jolly elf who is rumored to be making an early appearance at his

favorite holiday celebration. There’s no chance of a silent night with this much music and fun. When the gates open at 6 p.m., concertgoers will be walking in a winter wonderland of activities before the show starts. Guests of all ages are invited to play in the snow, meet classic holiday characters, create arts and crafts projects to deck the halls, and more. All aboard the Candy Cane Express in the Gold Lot starting at 5:30 p.m. No Scrooges or Grinches are allowed at this holiday celebration. There’s no place like The Pavilion for the holidays! Join us for Holly Jolly Jingle on December 3 to start your celebration of the holiday season.

Children are invited to come out and play as The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is transformed into a giant playground filled with fun and adventure. The 20th Annual Children’s Festival, presented by ExxonMobil takes place Nov. 14 & 15, 2015. Kids are in for the time of their lives with performers on multiple stages, characters strolling around and activities located all around the venue. There’s surely something for each child to enjoy.

Riff Rockit is a live action children’s entertainer who performs music the entire family can enjoy. Best described as part of the growing musical genre known as “kindie rock”, Riff Rockit’s songs are both inspirational and educational, set to music that is not dumbed down for children and performed in a rockin’ style. Riff Rockit takes the stage on both Saturday and Sunday. One of only six certified LEGO™ Master Builders in the world, Brandon Griffith will be in the CB&I SEAD Zone on Saturday and Sunday with some of his elaborate creations. Griffith will be creating two commissioned pieces while on site, including a replica of The Pavilion. He will also have an interactive area where kids can play with bricks and learn how to become a master builder. In the Meet and Greet area, kids have the opportunity to meet the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael will be at The Pavilion

If arts and crafts are what your child fancies then make sure to head over to The Villager’s Arts Alley. Kids are encouraged to unleash their inner artist and create their own masterpieces. They will learn about lines, colors, shapes, patterns, unity, balance and more by using these elements to make imaginative creations. Take a walk to the Anadarko Adventure Zone for wild outdoor activities including a petting zoo and fun inflatables. Interact with professional sports teams like the Houston Texans and Houston Dynamo and test your speed with Bubble Runners. If your child has been struck by a bolt of energy then stop by the Texas Children’s Hospital Healthy KidZone where they can learn about health and physical fitness from a variety of local businesses and organizations. Explore an ambulance and enjoy games and activities like martial arts, gymnastics and more. The Activity Tent is the place to be for a train ride, hands-on activities and games organized by local businesses including brain teasers, instrument petting zoo, a coloring contest and lots of other great activities. The Fly Zone is filled with excitement. At the top of The Pavilion hill you can build your own kite and see it take flight, as well as dig for gold and participate in parachute races. Admission is $8 per person in advance or $10 per person at the door. Children age 2 and under are free of charge. All activities and performances are included in the price of admission. No tickets or coins are needed for activities at the festival. Picnics are welcome, but beverages cannot be brought into the venue.

In each issue of CenterStage, we turn the spotlight onto one of our sponsors, a gesture of thanks for their invaluable contributions to the many things we work hard to accomplish.

United Airlines Partners with The Pavilion

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is pleased to celebrate the continued support of United Airlines, official airline of The Pavilion, in the 2015 Performing Arts Season. United has not only been a sponsor of The Pavilion for more than 20 years, but also continues to support The Woodlands community in a number of ways. As a permanent resident of Houston in the George Bush Intercontinental Airport, United’s 15,000 area employees understand the importance of supporting the region in which they live and work.

Amy Shaughnessy, senior manager of community affairs, is tasked with deciding which local organizations best represent the objectives of the airline and splitting the available funds between them. “The arts can take you places even United can’t,” she said. “We are happy to sponsor performing arts at The Pavilion, as well as the mission of bringing performing arts to new and wider audiences.” Customers of the international airline regularly encounter different cultures across the globe, but United aims to bring a unique experience of these cultures directly to Houstonians through its partnership with local performing arts programs. To achieve this goal, United also

sponsors the Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet and the Houston Grand Opera, while many of its employees serve on community organization boards. The Pavilion’s educational outreach programs play a crucial role in earning United’s continued sponsorship. “Musical Scores is one event that we are very enthusiastic to support,” Shaughnessy said. “It’s a phenomenal program for teaching kids to set concrete goals and rewarding them for their hard work.” United is equally enthusiastic about Children’s Festival. “It is a massively successful event, and we love to come back every year to see how it’s grown. Every square inch [of the festival] has something exciting!” Additional philanthropies supported by the airline include the Houston Food Bank, March of Dimes, and educational programs such as youth leadership, STEAM (academic disciplines in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and literacy. The Pavilion and its staff appreciate the volunteerism and generosity of United in its 2015 Performing Arts Season and look forward to the future of this partnership.

The Center for the Performing Arts at The Woodlands would like to thank the following contributors for their financial support of our 2015 Performing Arts Season and Educational Outreach Programs as of September 14, 2015, printing deadline.

Arts & Education Converge at The Pavilion

Educational outreach is an integral part of the mission of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, and a passion of anyone who chooses to be involved. Fine arts play a key role in fundamental development and are therefore important to include in any form of education. To accomplish the goal of enhancing education about performing and visual arts while providing training and performance opportunities for young artists, The Pavilion offers countless community engagement opportunities in each performing arts season. In an effort to further engage community members in performing arts, The Pavilion offers various programs in support of fine arts students, such as The Pavilion Partners Fine Arts Scholarship Program for high school graduates looking to further their education of fine arts. Chamberfest is an opportunity for young musicians to spend a week with Juilliard-trained instructors during the summer. Additionally, the Texas Music Festival offers an opportunity for local Boy Scouts to earn music merit badges. The Young Talent Spotlight encourages promising young artists to pursue their passion by exposing them to live audiences at The Pavilion. In the past year alone, opportunities for youth involvement included local high school orchestras making music at Holly Jolly Jingle, School of Rock performing before the Houston Symphony’s Music of Led

Volunteers Needed for 20th Annual Children’s Festival

It is hard to believe the 2015 season is almost over. It has been an amazing season with exciting concerts. We have had unbelievable talent from Elton John, Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga, Rick Springfield, Kelly Clarkson, Lady Antebellum and Def Leppard. But don’t hang up that Partners shirt yet! We still have a lot to do in the remainder of 2015. Starting with another educational outreach event, the Fall Fine Arts Education Day on October 7 and in November The Pavilion’s cornerstone event, the 20th Annual Children’s Festival. Both events require lots of volunteers. There are also three performing arts events left to staff: Houston Ballet Oct. 1, Hocus Pocus Pops Oct. 23 and Holly Jolly Jingle Dec. 3. Then still, there are the several Live Nation shows like Van Halen, Counting Crows, Oddball Comedy Festival and one more Buzzfest. Did I forget to mention the annual Pre-Concert Dinner & Fundraiser on September 26 before the Hall and Oates concert? We still have reservations available! I would personally like to thank each and every Pavilion Partner for your dedication. Without you, The Pavilion would not be what it is today. See you out there.

John Robichau The Pavilion Partners President For more information about Partners, please visit www.woodlandscenter.org/partners.

Children’s Festival is a four-day event with school days Thursday and Friday, Nov. 12 and 13, and public days Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 14 and 15. It is non-stop fun and excitement around every corner. There are a variety of jobs and one to suit each volunteer. In the past, corporations and community service organizations that have volunteered include ExxonMobil, AON Hewitt, Strike, Cypress Woodlands Junior Forum, Junior League of The Woodlands, The Woodlands Church, Lone Star College, SHSU Omega Phi Chi Sorority, BBVA Compass and high school Interact, DECA, Honor Society, Key, Arts, Leo, and foreign language clubs from The Woodlands, College Park, Oak Ridge, Klein, Klein Collins, Spring, Tomball and Wunsche High Schools. The Pavilion relies on many volunteers to make its events successful. Children’s Festival is one of The Pavilion’s cornerstone events and is essential to The Pavilion’s mission of providing educational programs to the community. It takes approximately 450 volunteers to produce the event. On school days, volunteers escort nearly 4,000 students and teachers each day from their buses to their seats and then back to their buses after the event. On the weekend, volunteers help in different areas of the festival including face-painting and hat-making booths, arts and crafts, parachute races, kite flying on the hill and more. Studying Fine Arts in Higher Education: The Pavilion Partners Scholarship Program Since its inception in 1999, The Pavilion Partners Fine Arts Scholarship Program has awarded more than 675 students with scholarships, totaling more than $815,000. In May 2015, Partners awarded 23 new scholarships to graduates from 11 local high schools and 24 renewal scholarships to current students of 18 different colleges and universities across the country. “My goal from the beginning was to continue my education and strong pursuance of fine arts, but also to earn a degree in business from a respected school with an established program,” said 2012 visual arts scholarship recipient Barry Carter. “The only place that could meet me in the middle was not going to be cheap. I needed all the help I could get financially, and I’m glad Pavilion Partners believed in me.” Thanks to the funds offered by the Partners scholarship, Barry now attends Texas Christian University, where he is able to pursue both of his passions in an encouraging environment. Every year, The Pavilion Partners offer fine arts scholarships to graduating high school seniors planning to expand their education in the arts, as well as renewal scholarships to past recipients continuing to study the arts in college. Based on talent and academic performance, fine arts scholarships are awarded to students in the categories of vocal music, instrumental music, dance, theater arts and visual arts.

In total, 20-25 new high school graduates are awarded scholarships between $1,500 and $5,000 each year. Current students who have earned this scholarship in the past are eligible yearly to apply for a $1,000 renewal scholarship, awarded based on good academic standing and contributions to fine arts. The Pavilion Partners Fine Arts Scholarship Program is available to the students of local high schools in eight eligible districts: Conroe ISD, Spring ISD, Klein ISD, Magnolia ISD, Montgomery ISD, Tomball ISD, Willis ISD and Aldine ISD, as well as private schools and homeschools within each district’s boundaries. Financing for these scholarships is largely donated through The Pavilion Partners Annual Wine Dinner & Auction.
