Sponsor Spotlight In each issue of CenterStage, we turn the spotlight onto one of our sponsors, a gesture of thanks for their invaluable contributions to the many things we work hard to accomplish.

Hubbell & Hudson Helps Transform The Pavilion Into a Winter Wonderland Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

Our 23rd season is winding down, and has been one of our most successful years to date. We finished the third quarter, Sept. 30, ranked No. 3 in the world in total tickets sold by amphitheatres according to Pollstar magazine. We have sold more than 335,000 tickets during this time period and project to be over 380,000 at the end of the year.

Hubbell & Hudson, a one-of-a-kind culinary experi ence in The Woodlands, will be part of The Pavilion’s holiday festivities, specifically sponsoring SNOW at the Houston Symphony’s Holly Jolly Symphony Spectacular Dec. 7. Forecasters predict there is a 100 percent chance of snow Dec. 7 at The Pavilion, offering kiddos the chance to frolic in a Winter Wonderland. There will be areas of “high accumulation” ideal for making snow angels or building a snowman. Even little tikes can romp around safely in an area just for the little ones. This magical experience is generously brought to you by Hubbell & Hudson.

Hubbell & Hudson, which includes the Market, Bistro and Viking Cooking School, was born out of a desire to bring a world-class culinary destination to The Woodlands. It combines an award-winning gourmet retail shop with a cooking school, world-class dining experience and catering services. Located in Waterway Square, walking distance to The Pavilion, Hubbell & Hudson offers the finest gourmet catering for the holidays, utilizing the freshest all-natural and organic ingredients, turkey, ham and game. Note: The snow on Dec. 7 will take place regardless of the temperature, but rainy weather could adversely impact the event, causing The Pavilion to reschedule the snow portion of the event.

I would like to thank those of you who supported our performing arts events this year. The Houston Symphony concerts and Houston Ballet performance have both experienced an increase in attendance this season. It’s great to see the performing arts are doing well at The Pavilion. We are already scheduling our 2013 season and hopefully will see the Houston Grand Opera return for a Pavilion performance in the near future. We have not had an opera at The Pavilion since 2005. I invite you to come out and support the 17th Annual Children’s Festival Nov. 10 and 11 and the Houston Symphony’s Holly Jolly Symphony Spectacular Dec. 7. Both of these events are great family fun. I want to again thank our sponsors, The Pavilion Board of Directors, and staff for the tremendous support in

Music in Motion Gives Students Opportunity for Professional Training Cello. French horn. Viola. The sounds of these instruments and more echoed through the halls of College Park High School on Sept. 29 as students gathered for Music in Motion. This is the third year that The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and the Houston Symphony have collaborated on the educational outreach program. More than 311 band and orchestra students from all five CISD high schools attended the event, including The Woodlands, College Park, Oak Ridge, Conroe, and Caney Creek.

Music in Motion instructors included Anthony Prisk, trumpet; Gina Hughes, flute; Mihaela Frusina, violin; Christian Schubert, clarinet; Allen Barnhill, trombone; Matt Strauss, percussion; Brian Thomas, French horn; Danny Vinson, euphonium; Dave Kirk, tuba; Sasha Potiomkin, bass clarinet; Elise Wagner, bassoon; Anne Leek, oboe; Linda Goldstein, viola; Anthony Kitai, cello; Eric Larson, bass; Rick Reeves, bass trombone; and Izumi Miyahara, piccolo. Scott Plugge, the saxophone clinician, is the director of the School of Music for Sam Houston State University. Not only is the program a chance to help students prepare for All-State competition, but it is also an opportunity for them to become familiar with performing arts opportunities in the Houston area. “Part of our mission is to enhance educational opportunities for young people in the arts,” said Cindy DuBois, director of marketing and education at The Pavilion. “Programs such as Music in Motion really bring that to life and shows students that playing an instrument doesn’t have to be just a hobby, but could be a career opportunity as well.”

“I really love being in band because the students are great to work with,” said Sarah Meidel, College Park sophomore. “You learn so much about teamwork and it’s a great atmosphere to be surrounded by.” The two-hour master classes were led by 18 professional musicians, 17 from the Houston Symphony and one from the Sam Houston State University Symphony Orchestra, all specializing in different instruments. “The students come with so much enthusiasm. They put their all into it and really want to get better,” said Christian Schubert, clarinet clinician and member of the Houston Symphony. “One of the best things about Music in Motion is that the instructors tell the students a lot of things that their private lesson teachers tell them already. They think, ‘Wow, my teacher told me that too. It must really be important.’”

Music in Motion is sponsored by The Woodlands Development Company in honor of Cynthia Woods Mitchell’s commitment to the performing arts.

S U P P O RTING C ST President’s Message

In the past, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s season has ended with the annual Children’s Festival. It’s a massive labor of love that requires hundreds of volunteer hours. And usually it is the grand finale of the season. This year, a special treat has been added to end the season and at just the right time to get our community in the holiday spirit. The event is Holly Jolly Symphony Spectacular Dec. 7 featuring the Houston Symphony. So, mark your calendars! The Pavilion Partners volunteers will be all decked out for the big event and we would love to see you and yours make this part of The Woodlands holiday tradition.

If there is a special someone on your list that is hard to shop for or has everything, why not consider having a Pavilion Brick dedicated in their honor? This is a one-of-kind opportunity to give a loved one that cherishes the arts a gift that will last throughout the ages and foster the educational programs here at The Pavilion. Happy Holly Jolly Holidays,

The Pavilion Partners recently volunteered at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s Music in Motion educational outreach program Sept. 29 at The Woodlands College Park High School. The volunteers helped greet the students, escorted the students to their workshop rooms and assisted staff. Pictured left to right are: Greg Folks, Beth Folks, Rhonda Richardson, Ann Sever, Mark Gott, Angela Gott, Judy Latour, Dane Sever and Joyce Reynolds. Save the Date for the 15th Annual Wine Dinner & Auction

Mark your calendar for March 24, 2013, and get ready to be wined and dined at the 15th Annual Wine Dinner & Auction. The Pavilion Partners, the official volunteer organization of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, host this annual event benefiting The Pavilion’s educational programming and the Partners Scholarship Fund. A wine and hors d’oeuvres reception begins at 5 p.m. followed by a seated dinner by Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar at 6:30 p.m. The cost to attend the event is $200 per person.

“One reason that we chose to volunteer through Partners, and direct our grants there, is the fact that Partners gives back to the community in forms of scholarships, educational outreach programs, performing arts and more,” said, Angela Gott, Partners member and Insperity Employee. Insperity and Exxon Mobile Foundation actively encourage employee volunteerism to charitable organizations in the community by offering volunteer involvement and matching grant programs. Both Insperity and Exxon Mobile Foundation will match employee’s direct donations, as well as offer charitable grants to those organizations in which their employees actively volunteer. Exxon Mobile Foundation’s Volunteer Involvement Program includes retirees as well as active employees. Be sure and check with your human resources department to see if your company has a volunteer involvement program or matching grant. It’s a great way for companies to recognize those who give so generously of their time, and to provide an additional opportunity for organizations to earn funding in a very meaningful way. A special thank you to the following Partners who have contributed through their companies matching programs: Alan Braaten, Angela Gott, Charles Lano, Linda Notarainni and Richard Olson.

Fine Arts Scholarships Available Through The Pavilion Partners

In addition to fine food and a variety of wines, the evening includes a live auction, bid board auction and silent auction featuring a selection of wine-related items, leisure packages, private dinners and tastings and more. Net proceeds from the live auction benefit the Partners Scholarship Fund. The remaining net proceeds from the event benefit The Pavilion’s educational outreach programs including Children’s Festival and Musical Scores. The 15th Annual Wine Dinner & Auction Committee is excited to announce that this year’s event will honor Arlene and Sol Sachs for their generous support of the arts, The Pavilion and the entire community. Sol has participated on the Wine Dinner committee for more than 11 years. He co-chaired the committee from 200311 with Randy Lowry. Arlene has volunteered at the Wine Dinner for several years as well. There are several underwriting opportunities available for the Wine Dinner including $10,000 for wine, $5,000 for decorations, $1,500 for postage, $1,500 for Charm Your Glass, $1,000 for sunglasses and $1,000 for programs. Additionally, guests can donate $1,000 for a fine arts scholarship. Donor Brick Program Helps Lay a Foundation for the Arts The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s Donor Brick Program is just one way for community members to pave the way for the performing arts in our community. A Pavilion brick can be a lasting symbol of your support for the performing arts, a unique birthday gift, a way to recognize coworkers or business associates, or a remembrance for family members and loved ones.

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Launches App The Apple App Store has more than 500,000 apps for work, play and everything in between. And now it includes The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s app. The Pavilion’s app is now available to download for free in the Apple App Store. The Pavilion app is compatible with iOS devices including iPhone, iPad and iPod. Guests can get detailed event information, buy tickets to events, add specific events to a Favorites list, scroll over the interactive map to see where the concessions or restrooms are located, sign up for Pavilion newsletters, find out about guest information and more. “We are excited to launch our app and cannot wait for our fans to start using it,” said Jerry MacDonald, president and CEO of The Pavilion. “We hope concertgoers use the application as a tool to find information about The Pavilion quickly and easily.” Currently, The Pavilion only offers an Apple app for iOS devices, but plans for the app to be available for other smartphones in the future. Look for updates to the iPhone app beginning in 2013.

Recently, five individuals were honored with a brick placed at The Pavilion’s entrance. Individuals honored included John Butler, Gene Wolfson, Keith Ferry, Kelly Rich and Brenda Mizell. “I wanted something special for my husband’s birthday and could not think of a better gift than to honor his parents with a brick at The Pavilion,” said Kathy Butler. “Because his parents meant so much to both of us, I had Loving Angels engraved on their brick. It is a great way to show how much you care.” The Pavilion Partners honors past board presidents by engraving and installing a brick with their name and “Pavilion Friend” on it. Any Partners member who joins at the Gold or Platinum level also receives a brick in their honor. Another way to participate in the donor brick program includes a corporate brick with the company’s logo engraved on it. The bricks are located at the main entrance of the venue outside the North Gate. Proceeds from the donor brick program support The Pavilion, a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization. The current cost is $100 per brick. For more information on The Pavilion’s Donor Brick Program, visit www.woodlandscenter.org/ brickprogram.html or contact Leslie Williams at lwilliams@woodlandscenter.org or 281-210-1125.

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Welcomes New Employees Several new faces have been seen in The Pavilion’s administration building with the addition of three new employees to the marketing department, development department and accounting departments. Whitney Hough joined the marketing and education department as the social media marketing coordinator. Hough joined The Pavilion in September and is responsible for managing The Pavilion’s social media presence. Hough also assists the marketing department with various tasks, including support for performing arts events and educational outreach programs. Prior to joining the staff of The Pavilion, Hough was the marketing assistant at Farouk Systems, Inc. and public relations assistant at Houston Community College Southwest. She moved to the Houston area in January after graduating from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C., with a Bachelor of Science in Integrated Marketing Communications. Leslie Williams has been with The Pavilion since April when she took over the position of volunteer and special events coordinator. Williams had worked as a corporate liaison with The Pavilion for many years

prior. She also has been a member of The Pavilion Partners since 2007 and was very active on the board and various committees. Born and raised in Texas, Williams enjoys spending most of her time with her daughter, Maice. Together, they volunteer at their church café serving coffee and donuts. Stephanie Stone recently accepted the position of accounting assistant at The Pavilion, although she has been a concertgoer at the venue for several years. She attended her first Pavilion concert in 1993. As a young adult, Stone moved to Hollywood and worked as a promoter and movie extra. She has appeared in major films such as “Wayne’s World,” “Born Yesterday” and “Conflict of Interest,” as well as a few television shows such as “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Doogie Houser.” Stone was born and raised in Houston, but has lived in Philadelphia and Chicago. Jenny Lewis, formerly accounting assistant for The Pavilion, was recently promoted to accountant. In her new role, Lewis is responsible for accounts receivable, collecting and maintaining insurance certificates for onsite tour vendors and accrual of outstanding expenses.
