Students Gain Real 3 World Experence New Board Members

Dig out those poodle skirts and leather jackets for a Grease Sing-A-Long at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion August 15. This special sing-a-long presentation of the original motion picture begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are just $5 for lawn seating and covered seating is available for $10 and $15. At this unique and interactive show, guests will experience the movie on The Pavilion’s LED screens, complete with animated lyrics displayed at the bottom. This family-friendly version is suitable for all ages. Sit back and watch Danny, Sandy and the gang, while singing (and dancing) along to the lyrics on the screen to hit songs like “You’re the One That I Want,” “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” and, of course, “Greased Lightning.” Attendees are encouraged to come decked out in their own versions of fifties high school garb worn at Rydell High, including poodle skirts and saddle shoes, black leather and powder-pink jackets, chiffon scarves and skinny ties. The best costumes may be chosen to go on stage for a costume contest during the pre-show entertainment by John Wessingler.

Pre-concert activities start at 6:30 p.m. with The Pavilion Partners, Fidelity Investments, Woodforest National Bank, Century 21 Realty Partners, Renewal by Andersen and Audi of America, official automobile of The Pavilion. Guests are welcome to have a picnic at their seat or on the hill. Keep in mind that beverages cannot be brought into The Pavilion. For guests sitting on the hill, lawn chairs will also be provided free for this event. Preferred parking is available in the on-site Town Center Garage, located along Six Pines Drive. Parking is $10 per vehicle for this and most performing arts events. Tickets for on-site parking can be purchased in advance at all Ticketmaster locations and The Pavilion Box Office. Guests also may park in any of the five free parking lots on the southwest side of The Pavilion. The free, color-coded lots are connected to The Pavilion by corresponding pathways with signs leading across The Waterway.
Get ready for tricks and treats at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s Hocus Pocus Pops featuring the Houston Symphony Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 for orchestra seating. Mezzanine and lawn seating are free courtesy of H-E-B. Tickets are not required for free seating. Gates open at 6 p.m. Conductor Lucas Waldin mesmerizes the audience with a nightmarish performance of horrifying horns, bewitching bassoons and chilling cellos. Everyone is encouraged to dress up in their favorite Halloween costume for a chance to walk on stage during the concert. The first 100 boys and “ghouls” to check in at Hocus Pocus Central in the North Plaza, fully costumed, get the chance to march in the Goblin Parade. Haunting the plazas before dusk are pre-concert activities starting when the ghoulish gates open at 6 p.m. Participate in enchanted events to win “spooktacular” prizes at BOOths offered by H-E-B, The Pavilion Partners, Fidelity Investments, Century 21 Realty Partners, Texas Children’s Hospital, Renewal by Anderson, Woodforest National Bank and Audi of America, official automobile of The Pavilion. If you dare, hop onto the Great Pumpkin Express and carve out some great (or gruesome) memories on The Pavilion’s haunted grounds. Train rides begin at 5:30 p.m. in The Pavilion’s Gold Lot.

For those gifted with the art of storytelling, tell us your spookiest story or Halloween tale for The Pavilion’s 5th Annual Hocus Pocus Pops “Spooktacular” Essay Contest. All students in kindergarten through 12th grade are welcome to participate. Each winner receives a $50 gift card, four VIP tickets to Hocus Pocus Pops and has their essay printed in the program for the evening. One Grand Prize winner will be chosen at random from the six finalists. The grand prize winner receives an Amazon Kindle Fire and has their essay printed in The Courier and The Villager newspapers.
Register to win monstrous gift baskets provided by H-E-B at the event. Bring any H-E-B receipt from Oct. 1-23, 2015, to Hocus Pocus Pops. One of the reasons The Pavilion is so successful is the strength and dedication of its board of directors. The Pavilion is a nonprofit organization that is governed by a 28-member board of directors made up of business and community leaders in the Houston area. All board members serve without pay and are eligible for two 3-year terms. Our board members are all very passionate about The Pavilion’s mission to support performing arts. I would like to thank our board members that have completed their term on the board this year including Jeff Shipley, Marsha Williams, Gary Becker, Jeff Harder and Julie Rock. All of these board members worked tirelessly and served The Pavilion well to make it a better facility for everyone. We have five new members that joined the board in May including Jonathan Homeyer, Larry Massaro, Blake Pounds, Patrick Shea and Christine Thoms-Knox. We welcome our new members and look forward to working with them in the coming years. I am thankful for our wonderful staff and organization that really sets us apart from other entertainment venues. with symphonies all over the world and has collaborated on many occasions with the Santa Cecelia Orchestra of the National Academy in Rome. He gave a world premiere performance with the Academy Orchestra in 2010 of the composition written for him by Oscar award winner Maestro Ennio Morricone for the Harmonica and Orchestra “Immobile 2.”
The Houston Symphony heats up the stage at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Sept. 10 at 8 p.m. for Music of the Americas. This classical concert features Latin-inspired pieces from famed composers Leonard Bernstein, James Moody, Silvestre Revueltas, Astor Piazzolla and Heitor Villa-Lobos. Tickets are $20 for orchestra seating. Mezzanine and lawn are free courtesy of The Wortham Foundation. Tickets are not required for free seating. Gates open at 7 p.m. Houston Symphony Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada returns following his debut at The Pavilion in May. Born in 1977 in Medellín (Colombia), Orozco-Estrada began his musical studies on the violin and had his first conducting lessons at age 15. In 1997, he moved to Vienna where he joined the conducting class of Uroš Lajovic, a pupil of the legendary Hans Swarowsky, at the renowned Vienna Music Academy and completed his degree with distinction by conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Vienna Musikverein. Gianluca Littera, an Italian harmonicist, joins the symphony for Music of the Americas. Littera, also an accomplished violist, is one of the very few soloists in the world today to perform classical and jazz music with the harmonica. Littera has performed

Local Students Learn from Juilliard-Trained Faculty at ChamberFest Students from the greater Houston area had a unique experience at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in June. These students were chosen to be a part of ChamberFest, one of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s newest educational outreach programs. ChamberFest is a week-long chamber music camp for students in grades 7 through 12 who play violin, viola, cello and bass. The event was started in 2013 by Marie Daniels, a Pavilion Partners Fine Arts Scholarship recipient, and was adopted as one of The Pavilion’s education outreach programs in 2013. This year was the third year the program was held at The Pavilion. Attendance has grown from just six students the first year to 25 in 2015. “This year, with a generous grant from the George Mitchell Family Foundation, we were able to expand our faculty and accept 25 students into the program,” said Marie Daniels, artistic director for ChamberFest. “I am beyond excited to see how the festival has grown in four years and looking forward to finding more ways that ChamberFest can grow, especially in broadening its impact within the community.” Students had the opportunity to study under both Daniels and the Attacca Quartet, comprised of Amy Schroeder, Keiko Tokunaga, Luke Fleming and Andrew Yee. All of the faculty members attended The Juilliard School in New York City for their undergraduate and/or graduate programs. “I believe that it was a fantastic experience for the students to get to work with the Attacca Quartet,” Daniels said. “Their inspiration and mentoring could be just the right spark for a student to decide whether or not to continue studying music.”
ChamberFest entails four days of rehearsals and coaching and one 45-minute individual lesson for each student. At the week’s end there is a Festival Finale at The Pavilion. ChamberFest not only encourages musical growth, but personal growth as well. Each day, the students have a 30-minute “Lunch and Learn” session on topics such as public speaking, improvisation, leadership and communication in chamber music. Since chamber music involves interpersonal organization and collaboration, students have the opportunity to lead each other. The focus of ChamberFest is chamber music (hence its name) which, unlike symphonic music, does not require a conductor. Usually consisting of two to ten musicians, the music was created for small groups in palace chambers of the 18th century. “ChamberFest is a perfect fit for The Pavilion’s mission of providing training and performance opportunities for young artists,” said Jerry MacDonald, president and CEO of The Pavilion. Southwestern University Student Joins Development Team This summer Jennifer Layer was chosen as the new development intern for The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Her main project will be creating a sponsorship packet for the Annual Children’s Festival. With an extensive background in child care and performing arts, Jennifer is thrilled to be involved in the growth of the Children’s Festival. As a born and raised Houstonian, Jennifer is aware that public schools are becoming much less enthusiastic about the creative and artful side of education, thus making her passionate about developing alternate opportunities for children to be involved in artful and creative experiences. This fall Jennifer will be a junior at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. She is majoring in communication studies and minoring in political science. While at school, Jennifer is also a journalist for the Southwestern Megaphone and the secretary of an on campus organization called UCAN2. She also enjoys running, writing, and spending time with her family, friends, and pets.
EfTA Intern Gains Real World Experience at The Pavilion
Carolyn Covington is excited to be working as an EFTA intern for the summer. She moved to The Woodlands three years ago after living abroad in London, Singapore, and Tokyo and is a rising senior at The John Cooper School. At school, Carolyn is on the steering team for Habitat for Humanity and is a varsity cheerleader. She also cheers competitively at Woodlands Elite and works part time at Abercrombie Kids, while still finding time to attend many concerts at The Pavilion. After graduation next May, she plans to attend college and major in behavioral neuroscience.
The Pavilion Board of Directors Elects New Members The board of directors of The Center for the Performing Arts at The Woodlands, home of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, elected five new members in May. Newly elected members of the board are Jonathan Homeyer, executive vice president for Wells Fargo; Larry Massaro, chief financial officer and executive vice president for Newfield Exploration Company; Blake Pounds, managing director for Accenture; Patrick Shea, senior vice president, general counsel and secretary for Waste Connections, Inc.; and Christine Thoms-Knox, senior vice president, corporate planning for CB&I. The Pavilion Partners’ responsibilities include bringing the arts to the community. We do this in several different ways. We reward local high school students who want to pursue the arts in college by offering renewable scholarships. We provide these scholarships due to the tremendous success of our Annual Wine Dinner and Auction. The other way we bring the arts to the community is by educational outreach programs at The Pavilion, such as Hats off to Reading, Musical Scores and the Annual Children’s Festival. We are able to provide these events to the community in part from the funds we raise at our annual PreConcert Dinner and Fundraiser. This year’s Pre-Concert Fundraiser will take place September 26 before the Hall & Oates concert. It is a fun, relaxing event with great food, drinks and games. Mark it on your calendars to attend or volunteer at the event. See you out there.

Make a lasting contribution to the arts with The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s Donor Brick program. A Pavilion Brick can be a lasting symbol of your support for performing arts, a unique birthday gift, a way to recognize coworkers or business associates or a remembrance of family members and loved ones. The bricks are located at the main entrance of the venue outside the North Gates. Proceeds from the brick donations support The Pavilion, a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization. The Pavilion recently hosted a brick dedication honoring Lillian Hargis, Helen Garza, Chris and Michael Grijalva, Chris McQueen, Carolyn and George Newman, David Ivan Solano, Daniel Ivan Solano and Usaura Uzcategui. The Pavilion Partners honor past board presidents by engraving and installing a brick with their name and “Pavilion Friend” on it. Any Partners member, who joins at the Gold or Platinum level, receives a brick in their honor. Another way to participate in the Donor Brick program includes a corporate brick with the company’s logo engraved on it. The Pavilion Donor Brick program is a great way to be a part of Pavilion history. Your Kiss is on the List at The Pavilion Partners Pre-Concert Dinner & Fundraiser September 26 Your kiss is on the exclusive invitation list at The Pavilion Partners Pre-Concert Dinner & Fundraiser Saturday, September 26 at 4:30 p.m. The event takes place in The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s House of Blues Hospitality Tent prior to the Daryl Hall & John Oates concert. Enjoy an assortment of appetizers by Tommy Bahama, followed by dinner catered by Squash Blossom. Complimentary beer, wine and a signature “Maneater” margarita will be served. Guests are encouraged to wear their favorite concert T-shirt to the event. Fun games and exclusive auction packages will be offered for purchase. Money raised from the event benefits The Pavilion’s educational outreach programs including Musical Scores, Fine Arts Education Day, Music in Motion and Children’s Festival as well as The Pavilion’s performing arts events. Michael Cavanaugh Honors the Great Singer-Songwriters at The Pavilion July 30
Join The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion when Broadway’s Michael Cavanaugh returns to the stage July 30 for Michael Cavanaugh: Music of the Great Singer-Songwriters with the Houston Symphony. Conductor Ernest Richardson leads the symphony as Cavanaugh sings iconic songs by artists like Paul Simon, James Taylor, John Mellencamp, Billy Joel, Neil Diamond and more. Tickets are $20 for orchestra seating. Mezzanine and lawn seating are free courtesy of Insperity and Anadarko Petroleum Corporation. Tickets are not required for free seating. Gates open 7 p.m. A charismatic performer, musician and actor made famous for his piano/lead vocals in the Broadway musical “Movin’ Out,” Michael Cavanaugh is the new voice of the American rock ‘n’ roll songbook. Michael Cavanaugh was handpicked by Billy Joel to star in the title role and evokes a style rivaling the Piano Man himself. Michael appeared in the show for 3 years and over 1,200 performances, receiving accolade after accolade, which culminated in 2003 with both Grammy and Tony award nominations. In July 2014, Cavanaugh shook The Pavilion’s stage for “The Songs of Billy Joel” with the Houston Symphony.
