A magical evening awaits at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s Hocus Pocus Pops featuring the Houston Symphony Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for orchestra seating. Mezzanine and lawn seating are free courtesy of H-E-B. Tickets are not required for free seating. Gates open at 6 p.m.

Conductor Lucas Waldin mesmerizes the audience with a nightmarish performance of horrifying horns, bewitching bassoons and chilling cellos. The petrifying program includes themes from “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” “The X-Files” and “Poltergeist” as well as enchanting songs from “Frozen,” “Star Wars” and “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” Everyone is gravely encouraged to dress up in their favorite Halloween costume for a chance to walk on stage during the concert. The first 100 boys and “ghouls” to check in at Hocus Pocus Central in the North Plaza, fully costumed, get the chance to march in the Goblin Parade. Haunting the plazas before dusk are pre-concert activities starting when the ghoulish gates open at 6 p.m. Brave boys and daring girls can participate in enchanted events to win “spooktacular” prizes at the BOOths offered by H-E-B, The Pavilion Partners, Fidelity Investments, Century 21 Realty Partners, Texas Children’s Hospital, Renewal by Anderson, Woodforest National Bank and Audi of America, official automobile of The Pavilion. Conquer your fears and greet “fangtastic” figures roaming around The

Pavilion, such as Dracula and Frankenstein. Dwell into the House of Blues Hospitality Tent between 6-7:15 p.m. at Sunny 99.1 FM’s Graveyard Smash Dance Party featuring great chills, thrills, tricks and treats. If you dare, hop onto the Great Pumpkin Express and carve out some great (or gruesome) memories on The Pavilion’s haunted grounds. Train rides begin at 5:30 p.m. in The Pavilion’s Gold Lot. For “monsterous” prizes register-to-win gift baskets provided by H-E-B at the event. Bring any H-E-B receipt from Oct. 1-24, 2014, to Hocus Pocus Pops. Receipts must be brought to Hocus Pocus Central in the North Plaza prior to the performance (between 6 and 7:15 p.m.) on Oct. 24. The drawing takes place on the Main Stage before the concert. Feel free to pack a picnic to sink your fangs into, but keep in mind that outside potions (drinks) cannot be brought into The Pavilion. Sitting on the hill? Lawn chairs also are provided free for this event!

For those who dared, more than 128 essays were turned in for The Pavilion’s 4th Annual Hocus Pocus Pops “Spooktacular” Essay Contest. At Hocus Pocus Pops each winner receives a $50 gift card and has their essay printed in the program for the evening. One Grand Prize winner will be chosen at random from the six finalists and receives an Amazon Kindle Fire and has their essay printed in The Courier and The Villager newspapers.

Fun and Adventure All Rolled Into One Giant Party at the 19th Annual Children’s Festival Children are invited to come out and play as The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is transformed into a giant playground filled with fun and adventure. The 19th Annual Children’s Festival, presented by ExxonMobil takes place Nov. 8 & 9, 2014. Admission is $8 per person in advance or $10 per person at the door. Children age 2 and under are free of charge. All activities are included in the price of admission. Picnics are welcome, but beverages cannot be brought into the venue. Kids are in for the time of their lives with performers on multiple stages, characters strolling around and activities located all around the venue. There’s surely something for each child to enjoy. This year’s Pepsi Main Stage performers include Choo-Choo Soul “With Genevieve!” and Junie B. Jones “Jingle Bells, Batman Smells.” Meet the Octonauts™! Captain Barnacles Bear and Kwazii Kitten are available for a meet and greet photo op throughout both days. Read more about the performers on page 3. Experiment with science-related activities in the ExxonMobil STEM Zone featuring the Big Canyon Balloon where kids can explore inside the canyon and discover a fossil record and oil deposit. Also featured are the Houston Children’s Museum, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, Fidelity Investments with free balloons, hatmaking, performances on the Community Stage and more. If arts and crafts are what your child fancies then make sure to head over to The Villager’s Arts Alley. Kids are encouraged to unleash their inner artist and create their own masterpieces. Take a walk to the Anadarko Adventure Zone for wild adventures and activities. You can create your own work of art in the sidewalk chalk area, play interactive games, arts and

crafts with The Woodlands Children’s Museum, get your face painted and more. If your child has been struck by a bolt of energy then stop by the Texas Children’s Hospital Healthy KidZone so they can learn about health and physical fitness with games and activities like Bubble Runners and Bumper Boats, get a chance to meet professional sports teams and learn the techniques of martial arts. The Activity Tent is the place to be for a train ride, hands-on activities and games organized by local businesses including brain teasers, a coloring contest, photo booth and lots of other great activities. The Galaxy FBO Fly Zone is filled with excitement. At the top of The Pavilion hill you can build your own kite and see it take flight, as well as dig for gold and participate in parachute races. Holly Jolly Jingle Our 25th Season is winding down and has been one of our busiest years ever. We finished the third quarter on Sept. 30 ranked No. 2 in the world in total ticket sold by amphitheaters according to Pollstar magazine. We have sold nearly 405,000 tickets during this time period. We are looking forward to hosting the 19 Annual Children’s Festival Nov. 8 and 9. Another fun family event coming up Dec. 4 is Holly Jolly Jingle. This holiday program is made up of student musicians from the area and Sam Houston State University Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Chorus. You can expect the holiday favorites to be performed, plenty of children’s activities in the Plazas and a special visit from Santa Clause on stage. The Pavilion participated in the Woodlands Art Council Art Bench Project this year. Come check out our Art Bench located outside the south entrance on the waterway. The Pavilion Art Bench has a musical theme and was created by artist Dan Skaggs from Laguna Beach, Calif. I want to welcome Sara Ortwein from ExxonMobil to our Pavilion board of directors. Sara is president of ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company and will be a great addition to our team. I am looking forward to next year, our 26th Season. Our season will include performances by the Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera and the very best in touring contemporary artists. Holly Jolly Jingle features a community-filled performance from Conroe ISD high school band and orchestras as well as the Sam Houston State University orchestra and chorus. Bringing glad tidings are Oak Ridge High School Orchestra, Conroe High School Band and The Woodlands and College Park High Schools Orchestras. Each school performs

a holiday medley. Sam Houston State University Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Chorus take the stage with sounds of the seasons. Arriving just in time is someone special from the North Pole to start a holiday singalong that everyone can join in. Before the concert, frolic in our Winter Wonderland, where kids can play in the snow, visit with Frosty and other holiday characters, make arts and crafts and more. All aboard for a ride on the Candy Cane Express for a merry good time starting at 5 p.m. in the Gold Lot. Come and enjoy the most wonderful time of the year!

As the snow sponsor for Holly Jolly Jingle this season, it is the first time that Jackson Walker has sponsored an event at The Pavilion. Music in Motion Prepares Students for Competition Music in Motion, one of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s educational outreach programs, was held Sept. 27 at The Woodlands High School with more than 350 Conroe ISD students in attendance. This was the fourth year for The Pavilion and CISD to present the program. As part of this free program, professional symphony musicians conducted master classes that were available to every CISD high school band and orchestra student to assist with their preparation for the UIL All-State competition. “Music in Motion gives our students the unique opportunity to learn from a high-caliber group of Houston Symphony musicians in preparation for the All-State competition and at no cost to the students. That is truly special,” said Pat Paris, administrative coordinator of fine arts for CISD. “This could not be possible without The Pavilion and its support of music education in our school district.” Students from all five CISD high schools, including The Woodlands, The Woodlands College Park, Oak Ridge, Conroe and Caney Creek, were in attendance. “I feel so lucky to have such an incredible opportunity to learn from the great Houston Symphony musicians at this event,” said Michael Heg, cellist from The Woodlands High School. “It’s admirable that these musicians are willing to come and help students like me.”

The two-hour master classes were led by 18 professional musicians from the Houston Symphony, all specializing in different instruments. “Music in Motion is a chance for the students to get one-onone time because now in school they are working more in group settings,” said Charlotte Royall, band director for The Woodlands College Park High School. “This also gives the students a chance to learn from another perspective on performing especially from a world-renowned orchestra like the Houston Symphony.” Sessions included violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, piccolo, oboe, euphonium, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, French horn, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion and bass trombone. Music in Motion is sponsored by The Woodlands Development Company in honor of Cynthia Woods Mitchell’s commitment to the performing arts in our community.

t a S g e a N o t e a g r n i Yo u ! m o C Children’s Festival Performers Choo-Choo Soul is a children’s entertainment act composed of singer Genevieve Goings as a hip-hop train conductor and her partner, Constantine “DC” Abramson, a dancer and beatboxer dressed as a railroad engineer. Soulful and current renditions of the ABC’s, 1-2-3’s, and learning how to be polite are all a part of this diverse and incredibly hip duo, teaching children through music on an animated train. The show can be seen on Disney Junior. Choo-Choo Soul performance is Saturday, Nov. 8 at 11 a.m. and Sunday, Nov. 9 at 3 p.m.

New Board Member Elected Sara N. Ortwein, president of ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company was recently elected to The Center for the Performing Arts at The Woodlands board of directors. Ortwein was appointed president of ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company in September 2010. She is responsible for developing and maintaining an industry-leading array of differentiating technologies in support of the Corporation’s global resource pursuit and leadership position in exploration, development, production and gas commercialization. A native Houstonian, Ortwein earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin before joining Exxon Company, USA in 1980 as a drilling engineer. She is a member of the board of directors for the Houston Zoo and she is an executive member of The Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Science of Texas. She currently serves on the Houston Independent School District’s Energy Institute High School Advisory Board and the University of Texas Engineering Advisory Board.

The Woodlands Waterway Arts Council recently unveiled art benches on The Waterway with a bench designed for The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. The Arts Council installed eight different benches along the Waterway and surrounding business district as part of the Arts Council fundraiser and awareness program. The bench is named “Ode to Joy” by Dan Skaggs. Skaggs is pictured sitting on the bench.

President's Message

Hello Fellow Partners, It is hard to believe that the season is almost over. It has been an outstanding 25th season and we still have several great concerts left including Hocus Pocus Pops Oct. 24 and Children’s Festival Nov. 6-9 as well as Jason Aldean Oct. 23 and Arctic Monkeys Oct. 30. The amazing thing about The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is that it draws people from not just local communities, but from all over the state and beyond. Partners is the best volunteer organization in The Woodlands, Texas and we have the power to help others in our community. One of the ways we show support is in getting a team together to walk Light the Night. The Light the Night Walk helps bring awareness to all types of cancer. Everyone is affected or knows someone who has battled this terrible disease. Please join us for the Light the Night Walk on Nov. 2 at Market Street – The Woodlands. Fine Arts Scholarships Available Through The Pavilion Partners Did you know more than 650 Pavilion Partners Fine Arts Scholarships have been awarded to high school and college students since the inception of the program in 1999? And more than $735,000 in scholarships has been awarded?

The Pavilion Partners in the Community

The Pavilion Partners has formed a team to participate in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Walk Nov. 2, 2014, at Market Street – The Woodlands. This is the second year Partners has participated in the event. Light The Night Walk is an awareness campaign of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) which brings together families and communities to honor blood cancer survivors, as well as those lost to the diseases, and shine a light on the importance of finding cures and providing access to treatments for blood cancer patients. “It is The Pavilion Partners privilege to form a team and join other community organizations to honor our Partners that are fighting cancer, have survived cancer and honor those we have lost to cancer,” said Leslie Williams, special events and volunteer coordinator for The Pavilion. “Cancer has affected many of our Partners members, their families and friends and we want to contribute in any way we can. In 2014, Partners awarded 31 renewal scholarships and 23 new scholarships totaling more than $89,000. Out of those 54 scholarships, students attended 22 different colleges and universities in the United States, 12 different high schools in 7 different school districts including one homeschool.

Partners Help Open the Microsoft Store

“Scholarships for students in the arts are unbelievably important. They allow us to create a strong and stable foundation as artists. They make the time commitment that is necessary to immerse ourselves in the exploration of our craft possible,” said Audrey Wilson, past Partners scholarship recipient. “I know I would not be where I am now had I not received a Partners Fine Arts scholarship throughout my college career.” Every year, The Pavilion Partners offers fine arts scholarships to graduating high school seniors planning to major in the arts, as well as renewal scholarships to past recipients currently studying the arts in college. Based on talent and academic performance, fine arts scholarships are awarded to students in the categories of vocal and instrumental music, theatre arts, dance and visual arts. This year, the top scoring applicants in each of the five disciplines receive a $5,000 scholarship. The next six highest scoring applicants across all disciplines receive a $2,500 scholarship. The remaining nine applicants receive a $1,500 scholarship. Students who have received a scholarship are eligible to receive a $1,000 renewal scholarship. Information about The Pavilion Partners Fine Arts Scholarship Program has been distributed at schools in eight eligible districts including Conroe ISD, Spring ISD, Klein ISD, Magnolia ISD, Montgomery ISD, Tomball ISD, Willis ISD, MacArthur and Carver High Schools in Aldine ISD and private schools within each district’s boundaries. The Pavilion Partners, official volunteer organization of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, attended the grand opening of the newest Microsoft store location in The Woodlands Mall. Microsoft donated an $8,000 hardware grant in exchange for Partners support of the opening of the store. More than 80 members showed up to the opening. “It was a fun experience and a unique way for Partners to impact the arts by supporting a local business,” said Leslie Williams, volunteer and special events coordinator for The Pavilion. “By simply attending the Microsoft store opening Partners was able to achieve a hardware grant that allows The Pavilion to continue its mission with better technology. Some Partners even enjoyed a little shopping!” The Woodlands Mall location is the fourth full-line Microsoft store in Texas. The company also has four smaller specialty stores in the state.
