Legendary Masterpieces Showcased at the Texas Music Festival Orchestra

Houston… We Have a Concert! June 15 • 8 p.m

June 14 • 8 p.m This summer at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, more than 100 gifted musicians from around the world are showcased in a free concert. In conjunction with the Immanuel and Helen Olshan Texas Music Festival, an intensive four-week study program at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music, the Texas Music Festival Orchestra takes the stage June 14 for Legendary Masterpieces. Tickets are not required. Gates open at 7 p.m. Under the direction of Horst Förster, these young artists perform the masterpieces of Richard Strauss’ “Don Juan,” Op. 2 and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. “Don Juan” is based on the poem of the same name by Nikolaus Lenus. Much of the musical work’s passion is drawn from the poem. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 is a cyclical symphony with a recurring main theme. The theme has a funereal character in the first movement, but gradually transforms into a triumphant march. The finalists and winner of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Young Artist Competition will be announced. Join us in supporting and celebrating these talented young artists. The University of Houston Moores School of Music sponsors the Texas Music Festival’s intensive four-week program that allows young musicians from all parts of the world to perform together and compete against one another. These Orchestral Fellows are advanced students and young professional musicians. At Legendary Masterpieces guests can rock out to the sounds of The Woodlands School of Rock performing on the Side Stage in the North Plaza from 7:15-7:45 p.m. Other plaza activities starting at 7 p.m. are with The Pavilion Partners, Fidelity Investments, Woodforest National Bank, Renewal by Andersen and Audi of America, official automobile of The Pavilion. Get insight into the evening’s program with Pavilion Talk, a free pre-concert discussion led by noted music scholar and former college professor Ira J. Black from 7:15-7:45 p.m. The first 500 guests to enter the gates receive a free T-shirt as a souvenir!

For an out-of-this-world concert experience, journey to The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion for The Earth – An HD Odyssey with the Houston Symphony June 15. This event is a special encore performance of the second film in the HD Odyssey series that showcases our planet. Tickets are $15 for orchestra seating. Mezzanine and lawn seating are free. Tickets are not required for free seating. Gates open at 7 p.m. Under the direction of Mein-Ann Chen, The Earth – An HD Odyssey features the Houston Symphony and striking images taken from NASA missions to Earth’s orbit accompanied by J. Adams “Short Ride in a Fast Machine” and Strauss’ epic tone poem “Also sprach Zarathustra.” The multi-media event takes an existing classical program with strong popular appeal and pairs it with an arresting visual presentation. The beautiful and mystifying images are shown on a large, 24-foot screen above the stage while the symphony performs. Before your voyage through space begins, make a stop in the North Plaza at 7 p.m. for pre-concert activities. Visit unique exhibits from Johnson Space Center, explore the music of “The Earth” at Pavilion Talk, a free pre-concert discussion led by noted music scholar Ira Black that provides insight into the evening’s program. Pavilion Talk takes place from 7:15-7:45 p.m. Your journey doesn’t end there. The King of Pop’s Music Lives On at The Music of Michael Jackson with the Houston Symphony June 8 • 8 p.m From his early years with the Jackson 5 to his mega-hit album “Thriller” and beyond, Michael Jackson stormed the music industry with hit after hit. The Music of Michael Jackson with the Houston Symphony June 8 is an evening filled with fabulous music spanning 40 years of Jackson’ influential and celebrated career. Tickets are $20 for orchestra seating. Mezzanine and lawn seating are free courtesy of Insperity and Woodforest National Bank. Tickets are not required for free seating. Gates open at 7 p.m. This event is sponsored in part by “Houston Family Magazine.” The concert takes the audience through each era of this storied performer from “ABC,” “I’ll Be There” and “Got To Be There” through “Beat It,” “Thriller,” “Rock With You,” “The Way You Make Me Feel” and many, many more. Bridging the gulf between pop and classical music, conductor and arranger Brent Havens takes the podium for a program he scored to extend the listening experience of Jackson’s exceptional tunes. Performed with the Houston Symphony and amplified with a full band and vocals, Havens and his ensemble capture Michael’s distinct sound while presenting some familiar as well as new musical colors. Delivering a fabulous rendition of Michael Jackson’s vocals is performer James Delisco. He grew up listening to Jackson and even met him at a performance in Jacksonville, Fla. where Delisco was raised. An iconoclastic showroom performer with great energy, Delisco emanates old school charm with contemporary charisma. His handling of a song

is so true to itself and to the purpose of music, to uplift and inspire, that a musical and entertainment revolution is only a matter of time for this enormously talented artist. On the threshold of major stardom, this polished young talent and electrifying performer plays to sold ou audiences everywhere he appears, which is a testament to both the mystery & intrigue of Delisco. James has that rare combination of a fablous voice, athletic dance moves and audience sensitivity where he understands what the audience is looking for and needs from the performers on stage. And he delivers,” said Havens. “He has an uncanny ability to make the right move on stage or say the right thing just as the audience is looking for it. Freedom Rings at the Annual Star-Spangled Salute July 3 • 8 p.m

Celebrate America’s birthday with a bang at the annual Star-Spangled Salute July 3. This free Independence Eve spectacular, which has been a tradition at The Pavilion for 23 years, features the Houston Symphony in a selection of patriotic favorites, led by Principal Pops Conductor Michael Krajewski. The concert is presented by The Woodlands Development Company. Tickets are not required. Gates open at 6:30 p.m.

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is off to a busy start this year, our 24th season. We celebrated Maestro Graf’s Farewell Concert May 10 which was his last performance as Music Director of the Houston Symphony. He has been the Music Director of this world-renowned orchestra for the past 12 years. Graf conducted pieces by Weber, Chopin and Beethoven during this very special evening. The Houston Symphony has announced Andres Orozco-Estrada as the new Music Director Designate. Orozco-Estrada is a dynamic young conductor from Columbia and we look forward to his first appearance conducting the Houston Symphony next season at our venue. Other highlights of the season so far include sell-outs of Buzzfest 30, Chris Tomlin and KSBJ’s 30th Anniversary Concert with Mercy Me and Switchfoot with surprise special guests Amy Grant and Steven Curtis Chapman. Another highlight was kicking off the Dave Matthews Band’s 2013 American tour May 17.

Wave your flag to the tune of traditional favorites including “Fanfare and Star-Spangled Banner,” “God Bless the U.S.A,” “America the Beautiful,” “God Bless America,” “Service Medley,” and of course, Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” with cannons blasting from the hill. Other American classics are “Thank God I’m a Country Boy,” “Deep in the Heart of Texas,” “The Yellow Rose of Texas,” “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” from ”Dreamgirls,” and more. Serving as special guests at the concert are Will Makar and Lekisha Jones. Makar, a resident of The Woodlands, was a contestant on “American Idol” in Season 5 as a top 14 finalist and Jones placed fourth on Season 6 of the reality singing competition show. The Star-Spangled Salute kicks off at 6:30 p.m. with pre-concert activities for the whole family in the North Plaza. Enjoy patriotic music performed by The Woodlands Show Chorus and interact with Betsy Ross, Uncle Sam and a living Statue of Liberty, as well as Puffy Pine Cone. Also enjoy activities by The Pavilion Partners, Fidelity Investments, Century 21 Realty Partners, Renewal by Andersen, Woodforest National Bank, The Woodlands Development Company, Radio Disney Road Crew and more. Guests also receive American flags and other patriotic souvenirs at the event. Don’t miss commemorating the birth of our nation by joining the symphony in this grandiose celebration.

Off Stage

I want to thank our dedicated directors going off the board in May including George Lindahl, Julie Mayrant, Ralph McIngvale, Brian Wing and Diane Nielsen. These individuals have done incredible work donating their time and money to make The Pavilion a better place. I also want to welcome our new board members including Jeff Beard, Eric Beylier, Peter Huntsman, Estelle McLaughlin, Nick Vanderpool and John Robichau. Next year is our 25th season and we are planning many exciting events to celebrate, including a fundraising gala in February 2014. Look for more details to come! We have many more wonderful Houston Symphony concerts and contemporary concerts the remainder of the year. For our symphonies, we provide free mezzanine and lawn seating, as well as free lawn chair rental.

Students Score a Big Reward at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s Musical Scores Event Students in the Greater Houston area were rewarded with a performance at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion for an educational outreach program, Musical Scores, May 1. More than 5,000 students and teachers from 34 schools and 11 school districts attended the 18th annual event.

Come out and bring the family to the Houston Symphony, enjoy a picnic on the lawn or in your seat and listen to one of the world’s finest symphonies. You will be glad you did! I look forward to seeing you at The Pavilion.

The program primarily serves academically at-risk, middle school students who earn the privilege to attend a special event at The Pavilion by displaying model behavior and achieving specific scholastic goals. To be rewarded, students must achieve specific goals as established by their teachers and/or administrators. These goals might include specific academic accomplishments, improving attendance, book-reading objectives, raising test scores, modifying classroom behavior, or whatever the administrators choose.

Each school attending the event got the opportunity to nominate one student as their exceptional student. Each student received a certificate and a gift card to Best Buy. All of the students were entered into a drawing to win a Galaxy Tab 2 donated by The Pavilion. Lachae Cormier, a student at Forest Brook Middle School won the prize.

The entertainment at the event included Peter Rabbit – Bucket Drummer. Rabbit drums on anything and everything. Specifically recognized as one of the world’s best bucket drummers he has performed at venues from the White House for Bill Clinton to Radio City Music Hall for

The Grammy Awards, Peter Rabbit has wowed millions of people with his talent. BREAK! The Urban Funk Spectacular, was the featured entertainment. BREAK! traces the history of Hip Hop Dancing over the last 30 years. It is a tribute to this American urban art form. Cast members are supremely talented artists from the world of “Breakdancing,” “Locking,” “Electric Boogaloo” or “Popping,” Power Tumbling, as well as DJ-ing and Bucket Drumming. Brandon “Peace” Albright with BREAK!, was the speaker at the event. He is well versed in the various styles of hiphop dance. He brings energy to the stage and presents a cogent voice in theater. Intrigued by the universality of hip-hop, Brandon speaks inspiration from other dance and art forms to make his blend of dance. The Rockets Launch Crew also got the crowd going with their highenergy, break-dancing, jump ropers and tumbling. Again this year, Jean Donatto served as master of ceremonies. For the past several years, The Pavilion has worked with Carver Magnet High School graphic arts students to create the T-shirt artwork for Musical Scores. A gifted junior, Jessica Navarro, is the T-shirt design winner this year. Navarro was one of 25 students from Carver’s graphic arts program who submitted artwork for consideration as the featured design on this year’s Musical Scores T-shirts. These complimentary T-shirts, along with free lunches, are given out to all students in attendance. Megan Martin, the art teacher from Carver coordinated the T-shirt design contest through her Electronic Media classes. “This design competition is a rare and wonderful opportunity for the students. “It was important to be involved and give back to the community we work in,” said Douglas Harris, senior customer service representative and diversity co-leader for Aon Hewitt. “The Pavilion’s Musical Scores was the perfect way to get involved, especially since it’s focused on rewarding students.” Aon Hewitt has provided volunteers for Musical Scores, Fine Arts Education Day and Children’s Festival. “The biggest impact Aon Hewitt has had on The Pavilion is their ability to support us not only monetarily, but also through volunteers,” said Christine Scully, director of development at The Pavilion. “Over the last few years Aon Hewitt has supplied more than 100 volunteers each year to Musical Scores.” In addition to providing financial support and volunteers to The Pavilion, Aon Hewitt also partners with a short list of local organizations in order to have a more focused impact. Hello fellow Pavilion Partners! We are off to a great start to what could be one of the best seasons for Partners and The Pavilion.

The Pavilion Partners Bring Fine Arts and Education Together Through Scholarship Opportunities by Stanica Matijevich

With the money raised at last year’s Wine Dinner, Partners was able to award 20 new scholarships to deserving young and talented local students. Partners also awarded 43 renewal scholarships from past winners. What amazes me is all of the incredible talent in our community.

“Bringing people and the arts together” is the mission of The Pavilion Partners, the official volunteer organization of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Started in 1998, this organization has lent their support to The Pavilion’s educational outreach and fundraising programs throughout the years. However Partners giving spirit doesn’t begin and end with The Pavilion.

As you know, Partners play an essential role in keeping with the mission of The Pavilion. By fundraising, The Pavilion can continue to provide incredible performing arts events and educational outreach programs. The Pre-Concert Dinner & Fundraiser is one event where those funds are raised.

Each year Partners awards scholarships to graduating high school seniors planning to major in the fine arts. More than $600,000 in scholarships has been awarded to students. Scholarships are awarded based on talent and academic performance and students are eligible for scholarship renewal each year.

This year I am very excited to announce the Pre-Concert Dinner & Fundraiser takes place before the Keith Urban concert Aug. 16. We are expecting a good crowd for the concert and a well-attended fundraiser. Tickets for the fundraiser are on sale now. Hurry and reserve your seat before it sells-out. Through the giving of scholarships the organization helps live up to the mission of The Pavilion by serving as a “resource for enhancing education.” This year Partners awarded 20 new scholarships and 43 renewal scholarships. A scholarship reception honoring new recipients and their families was held April 29 at The Pavilion.

Once again, thank you for all you do for The Pavilion and your love of the arts.

The Pavilion Partners Membership is on the Rise! The Pavilion Partners organization is growing and growing! Partners membership has been increasing this year with the addition of 84 new members. The entire membership is almost at 300 members. Partners is celebrating with a New Member Party June 7 at 6 p.m. at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. The party is a fun-filled evening and a great opportunity for current members to welcome the new members. Games, food and beverages are all a part of the fun. Marketing Assistant Gains Real World Experience this Summer

This summer Stanica Matijevich joins The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion as the marketing assistant. A senior at the University of Houston, Matijevich hopes to gain real world experience before graduating in December with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations and minor in Retail and Consumer Sciences. A proud member of Delta Zeta, she has held many leadership positions. This year she is honored to be serving as the chapter’s president. Last year Matijevich was heavily involved with Delta Zeta’s local philanthropy efforts, working at The Center for Hearing and Speech. Having served as their public relations and marketing intern for the fall semester, she helped prepare for their biggest event Via Colori. It is a two day street painting festival that raised more than $400,000. Matijevich also was involved in the University of Houston Orientation Team for two years and served as an executive member. Matijevich moved to Houston in 2010 from California. Though she claims to not have an artistic bone in her body, she does have a love for music. With Selena Quintanilla Perez being her idol and inspiration to work hard and achieve her dream, she hopes this summer gives her insight into the music industry and sends her on her way of achieving her dreams of working in the entertainment business as a public relations professional.
