German Masters Showcased at Free TMF Orchestra Concert

Celebrate the German culture as young artists perform Strauss’ “Death and Transfiguration,” Op. 24, and Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 under the direction of Lavard Skou-Larsen. Finalists of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Young Artist Competition will be announced at the concert and the winner showcased in a solo performance that evening. The University of Houston Moore’s School of Music sponsors the Texas Music Festival’s intensive fourweek program that allows young musicians from all parts of the world to perform together and compete against one another. These Orchestral Fellows are advanced students and young professional Lavard musicians.

Ignite your patriotic spirit at the annual Star-Spangled Salute July 3 at 8 p.m. at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. This free Independence Eve spectacular features the Houston Symphony in a selection of patriotic favorites, presented by The Woodlands Development Company. Tickets are not required. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. Led by Principal Pops Conductor Michael Krajewski, the symphony performs a variety of traditional favorites including “American Salute,” “Olympic Fanfare and Theme,” “Pomp and Circumstance,” “America the Beautiful,” “Service Medley,” and of course, Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” with cannons blasting from the hill. Michael Krajewski Joining the symphony to perform several of Simon & Garfunkel’s greatest hits are AJ Swearingen and Jonathan Beedle, who have performed their remarkable tribute to the music of Simon & Garfunkel for more than a decade. This summer at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, more than 100 gifted musicians from around the world are showcased in a free concert titled German Masters featuring the Texas Music Festival Orchestra June 22 at 8 p.m. The concert is in conjunction with the Immanuel & Helen Olshan Texas Music Festival and showcases German composers Richard Strauss and Johannes Brahms. July 26 • 8:30 p.m. of the concert celebrates the 20-year legacy of Looney Tunes and orchestral music together “in concert.” Retaining the most indelible moments from the original production, Bugs Bunny at the Symphony includes Chuck Jones’ inspired What’s Opera, Doc? and The Rabbit of Seville, while adding in other Warner Bros. classics like Friz Freleng’s Rhapsody Rabbit , and the virtuoso orchestral roller coaster ride of the Road Runner epic, Zoom and Bored, Baton Bunny, Home Tweet Home, A Corny Concerto, Long-Haired Hare and more. Bugs Bunny is joined on-screen by his immensely popular cohorts, including Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck, Tweety, Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner, Pepe Le Pew, and many others. ARAMARK Helps Reward Students and Gives Back to the Community
Some of you may not know that The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) corporation. The corporation owns The Pavilion and the 13 acres it sits on located at the corner of Six Pines Drive and Lake Robbins Drive. The Pavilion is governed by a board of directors consisting of 28 members and has a full-time staff of 25 employees and more than 500 part-time employees. The annual budget is more than $26 million. The Pavilion’s mission is: • To present a diverse offering of performing arts. • To be a catalyst for new audiences and enhance appreciation for the arts. • To provide educational programs about the performing arts. • To provide training and performance opportunities for young artists. Our board of directors has addressed many major issues over the last several years including naming rights, ticket tax, operating budgets, fundraising/galas and expansion.
ARAMARK Sports & Entertainment, official concessionaire for The Pavilion, has been a major sponsor of Musical Scores since its inception 17 years ago. Musical Scores reinforces positive school behavior by rewarding students with a free performance at The Pavilion, including lunch and a T-shirt. This year’s event hosted nearly 5,600 students and teachers. All participants received a complimentary lunch provided by ARAMARK. “ARAMARK’s continued support allows us to reward thousands of students each year for achieving academic or behavioral goals,” said Christine Scully, development director for The Pavilion. ARAMARK also gives back to the community by offering nonprofit organizations the chance to raise funds by staffing many of its concession stands each season. ARAMARK is currently seeking organizations that are interested in participating in this unique fundraising program that is both fun and exciting.
The benefits for nonprofit organizations include earning a percentage of their concession stand’s total sales for an event. Each organization has the opportunity to earn $100 to $2,000 per event, however there are no guarantees on the minimum or maximum amount a group can earn. Earnings depend on the amount of commission earned, number of events worked, fan attendance, weather conditions, stand locations and how well the group serves the customers. “This opportunity serves as an alternative to traditional fundraising,” said Duane Ussery, concessions manager for ARAMARK. “We are proud to partner with area nonprofits and hope we can help make a difference in the community.” Since 2006, ARAMARK has given out more than $1 million in commissions to non profit organizations. Board member terms are limited to six years. This year, those members coming off the board include Steve Arizpe, Jim Gibbons, Randy Lowry and Alex Sutton. These individuals did a fantastic job as Pavilion board members. They were strong advocates for The Pavilion and tackled difficult decisions during their time served. They will be missed. We are very fortunate to have five new outstanding individuals join our board in May. You can learn more about these new members on page 5. I would like to thank George Lindahl, our outgoing chairman of the board for the last two years. George is a great leader and inspired all of us to strive for excellence. Every year, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion dedicates time and resources to educating children about the arts. Approximately 30,000 students and families take part in a variety of educational outreach programs hosted by The Pavilion, such as Hats Off to Reading, Musical Scores and Fine Arts Education Day. Hats Off to Reading is an annual free literacy event at The Pavilion sponsored by the Reading Odyssey Committee. This year, the event was held April 25 prior to the Houston Symphony’s The Art of Baseball concert. With more than 850 people in attendance, the celebration encourages children to develop a lifelong love of reading through literacy-based activities, such as visiting with storybook characters, making bookmarks, and by receiving a free book to take home. Reading Odyssey is a partnership between MCMLS, CISD librarians, St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School Library, Scholastic Book Fairs, Chick-fil-A, Junior League of North Harris and Montgomery Counties and The Pavilion.

of David Edward Garcia, Soul Street Dance Co., Black Violin with Drums and the Houston Rockets Launch Crew. The Pavilion also partnered with Carver Magnet High School graphic arts students to create T-shirt artwork for Musical Scores. This year’s winner was Jose Navarro, a junior in the visual arts department at Carver. His design was featured on the free T-shirts all students received at Musical Scores. On May 23, approximately 5,500 Conroe ISD students and teachers, including all fourth graders in the district, attended the annual Fine Arts Education Day at The Pavilion. This free program is designed for fourth grade students to introduce them to orchestral music and instruments before they choose their elective when going into fifth grade. Sixth grade band and orchestra students also were invited. This year, the Houston Symphony’s program, as directed by Robert Franz, centered on the theme of “Water Music” and featured guest meteorologist Stephanie Melton who talked about the music as it relates to weather and clouds. The students enjoyed works by some of the greatest classical composers: Handel, Beethoven, Brahms and Mozart. This year’s 17th annual Musical Scores event was held May 9 and successfully introduced nearly 5,600 Greater Houston area students and teachers to the arts. Musical Scores is a free program that primarily serves academically at-risk middle school students. These students earn the opportunity to attend the event by achieving their personal “musical score.” This score can be reached by achieving scholastic goals and displaying model behavior. One of the most successful fundraising events produced by The Pavilion Partners is the annual Wine Dinner & Auction. This year approximately $130,000 was raised with $89,300 benefiting The Pavilion Partners Fine Arts Scholarship Fund. The remainder of the funds benefit The Pavilion’s 2012 educational outreach programs. For the second year, $1,000 named scholarships were available for guests to purchase and donate. This drastically increases the amount of scholarships that Partners is able to award.
I have been a judge for the instrumental music scholarship competition for the past several years, and it has been by far, the most rewarding part of being a volunteer. The degree of professionalism and artistic performances by the students is simply amazing. Many started their music instruction at a very early age. In interviewing the young musicians, there is a deep love of music instilled in all of them. Many of them were influenced by a teacher, a family member or a favorite composer. And it was heartwarming to listen to their aspirations of becoming band directors, symphony performers and composers.
The Pavilion Partners Awards Scholarships The Pavilion Partners, the official volunteer organization of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, recently awarded fine arts scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year. The awards included 25 new scholarships and 31 renewal scholarships. Since its inception, Partners has awarded more than $500,000 in scholarships to students studying the arts. Scholarships are based on the talent and academic performance of students majoring in the fine arts disciplines of dance, instrumental music, theatre arts, visual/ graphic arts, or vocal music. A scholarship reception honoring new recipients and their families was held April 30 at The Pavilion.
This year, the top scholarship, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Memorial Scholarship, was awarded to Caitlin Finnie from The John Cooper School. She is planning to study vocal music in college. Twenty-four other first-time scholarships also were awarded, including The Pavilion Partners Scholarship honoring Jacque & Lloyd Everson, named after the honorees of this year’s Wine Dinner. It was awarded to Kevin Fenske of Tomball High School, pursuing a degree in instrumental music. An additional 31 renewal scholarships

Join us Sept. 6 at 8 p.m., as Maestro Hans Graf conducts the Houston Symphony in his final season as Music Director after leading the orchestra for 12 years. Graf is a world-renowned conductor, having led notable companies such as the Vienna Philharmonic, Deutches Symphony Orchestra and St. Petersburg Philharmonic. Please come celebrate his Grand Finale at Latin American Classical. Pre-concert activities begin at 7 p.m. in the North Plaza, with The Woodlands Show Chorus performing from 7-7:45 p.m. Learn about the evening’s program and composers at Pavilion Talk, a free pre-concert discussion led by noted music scholar and former college professor Ira J. Black from 7:15-7:45 p.m. Tickets for the concert are $15 for orchestra seating. Free mezzanine and lawn seating is provided by The Wortham Foundation.
While Johannes Brahms is well-known for his “Lullaby,” the Houston Symphony’s Evening with Brahms won’t put you to sleep. On Sept. 21 at 8 p.m., enjoy the Houston Symphony performing three of the Romantic composer’s greatest works: “Variations on a Theme of
Hadyn,” Concerto for Violin and Cello and Symphony No. 4. Brahms’ music was heavily influenced by his love for nature and children, which makes these pieces perfect for a family night out at The Pavilion! With Graf at the helm, an Evening with Brahms tickles the eardrums of all ages. Pre-concert activities begin at 7 p.m. in the North Plaza, including a performance by The Woodlands High School Chamber Orchestra and Pavilion Talk at 7:15 p.m. with Ira Black. Tickets are $15 for orchestra. Free mezzanine and lawn seating is provided by The Wortham Foundation. On Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m., come hear the Houston Symphony in its “monster mash-up” of Halloween tunes at Hocus Pocus Pops. The “spooktacular” night is full of Halloween tricks, treats and enchanting music as the orchestra casts a spell during this “witching hour.” All daddies, mummies and little ghouls and goblins can dress up in Halloween attire. The first 100 children in costume who check in at Hocus Pocus Central get to march across The Pavilion stage in the Goblin Parade. Preconcert activities begin at 6 p.m. in the North Plaza, including The Pavilion Partners Instrument Petting Zoo and Arts & Crafts booth. Creep into the House of Blues Hospitality Tent for Radio Disney’s Graveyard Smash Dance Party, featuring the Radio Disney Boo Crew from 6-7:15 p.m. for “fangtastic” dancing, “spooktacular” prizes and plenty of tricks and treats! Tickets are $15 for orchestra seating. Free mezzanine and lawn seating is provided by H-E-B. This event also is sponsored in part by Houston Family Magazine.

Pinterest is a virtual pinboard that allows users to organize and share all of the great things they find on the Web, such as photos, recipes, decorating tips and more. Users can browse pinboards created by other people to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share their interests. Love for the Arts Lands Internship for College Student by Lauren Tennet
When she isn’t practicing piano or hulahooping on her campus’s “tundra,” Lauren Tennet is a senior at Ohio Northern University majoring in public relations with a double minor in history and Spanish. A proud sister of Delta Zeta, Tennet is involved in campus activities such as Public Relations Student Society of America, True North Public Relations and the Student Advisory Board for the College of Arts and Sciences. She has performed onstage at ONU, participating in musicals such as “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” “Oklahoma!” and “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” After only three years in college, Tennet graduates in May 2013 and hopes to attend law school or work for a music promotions company in the fall. Tennet is a native Houstonian and has attended events and even performed at The Pavilion. She has been singing and dancing her whole life, so she knows the importance of the arts to future generations. Her passion for the performing arts has taken her backstage, with a newfound knack for writing and promotion. Through this internship, Tennet hopes to grow as a public relations professional by writing press releases, conducting marketing research, updating social media and assisting with special events. She hopes these skills enhance her ability to work in the arts in the future.
