Ontario native Chris Hadfield was interested in flying and music at a young age. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces at age 18, studying engineering and aviation systems at Royal Roads Military College, the Royal Military College, the University of Waterloo, and the University of Tennessee while concurrently playing bass trombone and singing with college bands. Hadfield graduated as a top pilot from basic flight training and the United States Air Force Test Pilot School, and was an overall top graduate from Jet Training. He served as a NORAD CF-18 fighter pilot, an exchange test pilot (U.S. Navy) and performed research with NASA, among other accomplishments. After being one of four Canadian astronauts selected to train at NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, Hadfield has served as chief

Hadfield is a civilian CSA astronaut, having retired as a colonel from the Canadian Air Force after 25 years of military service (2003). He has flown over 90 different types of aircraft, flown twice in space (Atlantis, Endeavour), was named U.S. Navy Test Pilot of the Year, is a member of the Order of Ontario, was commemorated on Royal Canadian Mint silver and gold coins, and has been inducted into Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame. He has been a member of several bands in Texas including MaxQ--the all-astronaut rock and roll band--and Bandella, a five-piece acoustic band. He has played on Good Morning America, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and for the Russian Prime Minister from onboard the Space Station Mir. He is currently assigned to Expedition 34/35--launching in 2012 for a long duration spaceflight which will see him become the first Canadian to command a spaceship. Hadfield is looking forward to floating weightless next to the Earth-facing windows, being inspired to write, play and sing music using the onboard Larrivee acoustic guitar while orbiting Earth at five miles per second.

Pearl Hall Elementary Children’s Choir The choirs at Pasadena Independent School District’s Pearl Hall Elementary have enjoyed many unique performance opportunities. These talented students participate in biannual music festivals, have performed the National Anthem for the Houston Astros, in pre-concert activities for the Houston Symphony’s family Christmas concerts, during the world-premiere of the Houston Symphony’s The Planets--An HD Odyssey and on-site at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Other performances include the Opening Ceremonies for “Arts Day at the Capitol,” at the World Space Congress, the “Hear the Future” music festival and the International Space Station Educators Conference, among others. They have performed in multiple languages live from Earth to the crew aboard the International Space Station, in concerts accompanied by astronauts, for the NEEMO XIV crew living in the Aquarius underwater habitat, and to explorers and researchers on Mount Everest and Space School South Africa (Pretoria, South Africa) via video conference. The world of education through music is multi-faceted--immersing students in everything through the arts. Educational support from the Houston Symphony, NASA and international space agencies are established through the “Building Cultural Bridges” (BCB) Program designed by their music educators Jami Lupold, Pat Surface and Seth Fewell. BCB has allowed 58 musicians, astronauts and scientists from 23 countries to make

daily connections and create real-life learning experiences for these students through an innovative, musical environment. International music is infused into the Pearl Hall Elementary Choir curriculum by bringing people from around the world to the school to share their careers, cultures, folk music and favorite children’s literature--making it more relevant and helping the students connect with their community and world. The entire school has been elevated to a higher level of inspired learning and teaching through the generosity and commitment of the BCB contributors. April 2011 • 4

Concert Etiquette The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion offers concertgoers live performing arts events in a picturesque setting featuring such world-renowned organizations as the Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet and Texas Music Festival Orchestra. The following information about concert etiquette will enhance your visit and help ensure that all of our guests enjoy their arts experience to the fullest. Electronic Devices

During the Performance

Take a break from the outside world! Please turn off all cell phones, pagers and other audible electronics. Recording devices and photography are not allowed.

Guest should refrain from entering and exiting their seats while a performance is in progress. If you must leave your seat, please proceed quickly and quietly to the nearest aisle or ask the nearest usher for assistance. Please be courteous to other members of the audience.

Late Seating Fashionably late? If you arrive after a performance has started, our ushers will do their best to seat you during an appropriate pause in the program. For certain performances, and at the request of the artist, guests seated in the orchestra section might have to wait until a transition is made between songs to proceed to their seats.

Applause Not sure when to applaud and when not to? A good rule of thumb is to watch the conductor. The conductor should let you know when a piece is over by lowering both arms and turning to face the audience. After the Concert

Children The Pavilion is a family-friendly venue and we love to see families at our performing arts events. However, please be courteous of both the orchestra and those around you by keeping youngsters from talking loudly and running around during the performance. Even if you are seated on the hill, loud children can be very distracting for everyone. We want all of our guests to have the most enjoyable concert experience possible.
