Welcome to The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and our 27th Season of presenting the very best performing arts events, educational outreach programs and live music. We are excited about celebrating the arts with our performing arts events that include nine Houston Symphony concerts, performances by Houston Ballet and Houston Grand Opera as well as our 21st Annual Children’s Festival. The Pavilion is known as the Summer Home of the Houston Symphony, Home Away from Home of Houston Ballet and a presenting venue for Houston Grand Opera and the Texas Music Festival Orchestra.

You may have noticed we have replaced the old hospitality tent with a new larger, permanent building. The 21,000 square foot Pavilion Event Center will be the permanent home of the House of Blues Lounge and The Woodlands Township’s seasonal Ice Rink. This new facility also provides additional space we can use for the annual Children’s Festival and other private events. The House of Blues Lounge will be open during our contemporary shows to all guests with a concert ticket. Please come by to see this new space for yourself and enjoy everything The Pavilion has to offer. All of our performing arts events offer free lawn and mezzanine seating, thanks to our generous sponsors. Lawn chairs are also free of charge. Picnics are welcome. Biographies

James Owen presents Classical Mystery Tour: A Tribute to the Beatles Since its initial performance at the Orange County Performing Arts Center (now renamed Segerstrom Center for the Arts) in 1996, Classical Mystery Tour has become the #1 Symphony Pops attraction over the last decade. The group has been performing consistently for nearly 20 years with more than 100 orchestras in the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The group played to packed houses at the Sydney Opera House, and has performed with America’s most prestigious orchestras: The Cleveland Orchestra, The Boston Pops, The Philadelphia Orchestra, The San Francisco Symphony, among many others. The four musicians in Classical Mystery Tour look and sound just like The Beatles, but Classical Mystery Tour is more than just a rock concert. The show presents more than two dozen Beatles tunes transcribed note-for-note and performed exactly as they were originally recorded. Hear “Penny Lane” with a live trumpet section, experience the beauty of “Yesterday” with an acoustic guitar and string quartet, enjoy the classical/rock blend on “I Am the Walrus,” and relish the cascading orchestral crescendo on “A Day in the Life.” Classical Mystery Tour is the best of The Beatles – from early Beatles music on through the solo years – like you’ve never heard them before. Many have called it “the best show the Beatles never did!” The Los Angeles Times called Classical Mystery Tour “more than just an incredible simulation...the swelling strings and soaring French horn lines gave the live performance a high goose-bump quotient...the crowd stood and bellowed for more.” Classical Mystery Tour CDs and T-shirts are available for purchase on their website: classicalmysterytour.com. Jason Seber is celebrating his eleventh season as Music Director of the Louisville Youth Orchestra (LYO) and third season as Education and Outreach Conductor of the Louisville Orchestra. During his tenure with the LYO, the organization has grown from four orchestras to nine ensembles and orchestras serving 350 members. They have co-commissioned new works by Joan Tower, Joseph Schwantner, Christopher Theofanidis, and Jay Greenberg. Under his baton the LYO has collaborated in performances with the Louisville Orchestra, Conrad Tao, Christopher O’Riley, Caroline Goulding, and My Morning Jacket. This season the LYO Symphony Orchestra will have residencies with Project Trio and composer Christopher Theofanidis, as well as appear on National Public Radio’s show “From the Top.” With the Louisville Orchestra he leads programs on the Family, Making Music, Humanities, Martin Luther King, Holiday, Music Without Borders, Side-by-Side, and Pops series, as well as serving as cover conductor for most of the Classics Series concerts. Mr. Seber has recently been appointed Assistant Conductor of the Kansas City

Symphony, a position he will begin in the fall of 2016. In this new position he will lead the orchestra in nearly 70 performances a year, including the Pops, Classics Uncorked, Family, Young People’s Concerts, Kinderkonzerts, Christmas Festival, Symphony in the Flint Hills, Screenland at the Symphony, and various other series. He will also serve as cover conductor for Michael Stern and guest conductors for subscription concerts. Seber has recently guest conducted the Indianapolis Symphony, Colorado Symphony, National Symphony, Windsor Symphony, Cleveland Pops, Charleston Symphony, Mansfield Symphony, and the Denver Young Artists Orchestra. This season he will conduct concerts with the Kansas City Symphony, Houston Symphony, and the Cleveland Pops. Previous positions include Assistant Conductor of the National Repertory Orchestra and the Cleveland Pops Orchestra. Mr. Seber earned his M.M. in Orchestral Conducting from the Cleveland Institute of Music and a B.M. in Violin Performance and a B.M.E. from Baldwin Wallace University. April 2016 • 4

It was where my children saw their first opera and it was the place my wife and I traveled back to when we lived in California.”

Since starting his career in the auto industry Bob Milner has always operated on the idea that “those who can give back, should.” “It’s something my dad always taught me,” said Milner. “I didn’t grow up with a lot of money, but my father told me that there is always someone you can help. I remember many holidays serving in soup kitchens as a kid and that has stuck with me over the years.”

Concert Etiquette The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion offers concertgoers a picturesque setting for live performing arts events featuring world-renowned organizations such as the Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera and Texas Music Festival Orchestra. The following information about concert etiquette will enhance your visit and help ensure that all of our guests enjoy their arts experience to the fullest. Children The Pavilion is a family-friendly venue and we love to see families at our performing arts events. However, please be courteous of both the orchestra and those around you by keeping youngsters from talking loudly and running around during the performance. Even if you are seated on the hill, loud children can be very distracting for everyone. We want all of our guests to have the most enjoyable concert experience possible. Electronic Devices Take a break from the outside world! Please turn off all cellphones and other audible electronics. Photography and videography are NOT allowed during the performances, including with cellphones, at the request of the artists. Tablets, such as iPads and Kindles, are not permitted into the venue because they are a distraction to other guests and the artists. Late Seating Fashionably late? If you arrive after a performance has started, our ushers will do their best to seat you during an appropriate pause in the program. For certain performances, and at the request of the artist, guests seated in the orchestra section might have to wait until a transition is made between songs to proceed to their seats.

During the Performance Guests should refrain from entering and exiting their seats while a performance is in progress. If you must leave your seat, please proceed quickly and quietly to the nearest aisle or ask the nearest usher for assistance. Please be courteous to other members of the audience. Applause Not sure when to applaud and when not to? A good rule of thumb is to watch the conductor. The conductor should let you know when a piece is over by lowering both arms and turning to face the audience. After the Concert Bravo! As the applause dies down, the performers will put their instruments away and leave the stage. The house lights will be turned on so guests can exit safely. To Picnic, or Not to Picnic? Picnics are welcome at all performing arts events at The Pavilion. Guests can bring in any type of food item; however, beverages can not be brought into the venue. Guests are welcome to bring empty water bottles to fill at water fountains or to purchase beverages at our concessions stands.

Volunteer Spotlight In 2009, Sarah Epley became a member of The Pavilion Partners, the official volunteer organization of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Fellow Partners Debra and Matt Dozier told her about the organization and she jumped right in. Now president of The Partners Board of Directors, Epley has also served as co-chair for the Pre-Concert Dinner & Fundraiser and chairman of the Partners social committee, which coordinates activities for the Partners on a monthly basis. “Partners has allowed me to build great relationships with the people I volunteer with. When we are out volunteering, people see us having a great time together and ask about our group,” Epley said. “We love to be out in the community spreading the word about Partners. So many people don’t realize the volunteer opportunities at The Pavilion. The perks are pretty great too!” Epley’s favorite event she volunteers for is Fine Arts Education Day, when the Houston Symphony plays for Conroe ISD Fourth Graders to peak their interest in orchestra and band.

“It reminds me of a program that I attended as a student in Minnesota. It’s so inspirational to see these kids motivated through music,” Epley said. In her home state of Minnesota, she often attended concerts and wasn’t sure where to get the same experience in Texas. Now Epley attends as many concerts at The Pavilion as she can. “I enjoy coming to all of the concerts held at The Pavilion, whether they are classical or hard rock,” she said. “There’s such a variety here and the nice thing about being a Partner is you don’t have to choose which to come to you can go to them all!” Originally from Austin, Minnesota, Epley moved to The Woodlands nine years ago. A self-proclaimed “Midwestern farmer’s daughter,” she earned a finance degree from Mankato State University (now Minnesota State University Mankato). A member of Honors Choir and Orchestra in college, Epley plays the piano, viola, flute and sings.

How Rock Pays for Bach—The Pavilion’s Nonprofit Mission When the Mitchells set out to build The Pavilion in the late 80’s, they had a vision of a nonprofit, small outdoor venue that would only play classical shows and would bring the community closer to the performing arts. As plans continued, George Mitchell knew that he would have to solicit the help of venue development professionals to ensure The Pavilion’s success. One such professional was Allen Becker, co-founder and then president of Houston-based PACE Concerts. Becker saw the passion that the Mitchells had for The Pavilion and its mission of making the arts accessible to everyone, but he knew that they needed to expand their idea for it to work. Becker suggested that The Pavilion’s repertoire include contemporary shows to raise funds to support their nonprofit efforts. Becker knew that to make The Pavilion successful the Mitchells would have to expand their plans from “500 seats on the side of a hill” to a full blown amphitheater that would provide revenue generating contemporary shows that could support their performing arts shows and nonprofit mission. Now an often used mantra of The Pavilion staff, “rock pays for Bach” is the essential model for how The Pavilion operates today. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, The Pavilion is dedicated to the cultural enrichment of The Woodlands community and the greater Houston area. The Pavilion’s nonprofit mission is represented in four main objectives. • To present a diverse offering of performing arts • To be a catalyst for new audiences and enhance appreciation for the arts • To provide educational programs about the performing arts • To provide training and performance opportunities for young artists While many people know The Pavilion for its packed lineup of contemporary shows, the organization’s main focus is fulfilling the pillars of the mission listed above. Each year The Pavilion produces 10 to 15 performing arts shows that are provided at little or no cost to the public. Grand Opera and the Texas Music Festival Orchestra. An even smaller portion of ticket sales help produce The Pavilion’s vital educational outreach programs. Over the years corporations responsible for donating monies have put it simply— they want to invest in the organizations that invest in their community. With every event produced, The Pavilion seeks to fulfill the mission and dreams of the Mitchells. Private donors are also essential to the success of The Pavilion’s mission. Private donations come in several forms (in-kind gifts, performing arts season sponsorships, scholarship donations, etc.) and they are one of the simplest ways for community members to give back to the arts. Biographies Robert Franz, associate conductor As Associate Conductor of the Houston Symphony, Robert Franz leads the Symphony in a broad range of creative educational and family concerts. Winner of two “Leonard Bernstein Award for Educational Programming” accolades presented by ASCAP (the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers), Robert galvanizes young audiences with programming celebrating the diverse cultural make up of Greater Houston. Highlights include the world premiere of music from the iconic TV series Schoolhouse Rock! for orchestra. Reaching out to the community, Robert led highly successful side-by-side events giving musicians from the Texas Medical Center Orchestra and the Houston Civic Symphony the opportunity to perform with the Houston Symphony. Robert also serves as music director of the Boise Philharmonic, Windsor Symphony Orchestra and The Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival Orchestra. In increasing demand as a guest conductor, his upcoming and recent guest conducting engagements include The Cleveland Orchestra; Baltimore Symphony Orchestra; St. Louis, Phoenix and Victoria Symphonies; Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina in Italy. Robert received his master’s degree in conducting and his bachelor’s degree in oboe performance, both from the North Carolina School of the Arts. Purple Songs Can Fly is a unique program that provides a musical outlet for the many children being treated for cancer and blood disorders at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers. In this program, which is the first of its kind, the children work with founder, Anita Kruse, and other professional composers to write and record their own songs. In an in-house studio, and using portable studios at bedside, composers work with the children and their siblings to write, record, and burn songs to disc within short sessions.

These children are given a highly creative, much needed musical environment to express their many and varied thoughts and feelings. The children are then able to share their music with friends and family in the form of individual CD recordings of their songs. Purple Songs not only can fly, but do fly. The children’s songs are copied on purple CDs and flown by participating passengers, pilots and astronauts to places on earth and into space. To date, over 1,200 songs have been written, recorded and flown around the globe and beyond. The songs have flown on two space shuttle missions, been heard on both Continental and United Airlines In-Flight Playlists, toured the world with The Rolling Stones, traveled on an undersea NOAA mission, and summited Mt. Everest. As the first recording studio ever created on a pediatric cancer floor, Purple Songs Can Fly has inspired similar programs across the country and has been featured in numerous publications and broadcasts, including: The New York Times, The Associated Press, Family Circle, Woman’s World, Reader’s Digest, FOX’s Thanksgiving Day Special, and The NBC Nightly News. As the dreams, wishes, thoughts, feelings, and imaginations of these children take wing through the creativity of music, it is the vision of Purple Songs Can Fly that soaring, flying, and rising above the obstacles of illness can truly become a reality as each purple song that flies creates a tangible symbol for the hope of healing. Houston Symphony in the Community

In 2015, the Houston Symphony embarked upon a new initiative, hiring four musicians to serve as Community-Embedded Musicians, engaging people in learning experiences through music. These musicians are heavily involved in education programs targeted at improving problem solving, critical thinking, and essential life skills. These four musicians/educators will spend most of their time enhancing the orchestra’s growing education and community engagement activities while also performing on stage for select Houston Symphony performances. They are: Jenna Barghouti (violin), David D. Connor (double bass), Anthony Parce (viola), and Helen Weberpal (cello).

One element of the Community-Embedded Musicians program is the High School Residency program, designed to inspire and motivate students to continue playing their instruments and to achieve high musical goals. The students participate in workshops relating to audition and performance strategies, clinics with Associate Conductor, Robert Franz, joined by the four Community-Embedded Musicians, open rehearsals at Jones Hall, among other programs. One local school, The Woodlands College Park High School, was selected to be part of this new program. “The Houston Symphony’s High School Residency Program has offered our
