Welcome to The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and our 27th Season of presenting exceptional performing arts events, educational outreach programs and live music. We are excited about celebrating the arts with our performing arts events that include nine Houston Symphony concerts, tonight’s performance with the Houston Ballet, a full production with the Houston Grand Opera and our 21st Annual Children’s Festival. Thank you for being here tonight and for supporting the arts. The Pavilion is known as the Summer Home of the Houston Symphony, Home Away from Home for the Houston Ballet and a presenting venue for the Houston Grand Opera and the Texas Music Festival Orchestra.
Tonight’s performance will be the 26th time dancers from the Houston Ballet have performed on The Pavilion’s Main Stage. We are proud to have this world-renowned company perform in The Woodlands. We welcome the Houston Symphony back to our stage next Friday, May 20. Please join us as the Symphony presents Symphonie Fantastique, conducted by Andrés Orozco-Estrada featuring Venezuelan Pianist Gabriela Montero who is known for her real-time improvisation of complex musical pieces. All of our performing arts events offer free lawn and mezzanine seating, thanks to our generous sponsors. Lawn chairs are also free of charge. Picnics are welcome. Artistic Director Stanton Welch AM Artistic Director Chorographer, Velocity, Maninyas, and Romeo and Juliet In July 2003, Australian Stanton Welch assumed leadership of Houston Ballet, America’s fifth largest classical ballet company. Since he took the helm of the company, Mr. Welch has revitalized Houston Ballet, bringing in new dancers, commissioning new works, and attracting a top-flight artistic staff. Mr. Welch has created works for such prestigious international companies as Houston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, The Australian Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet and The Royal Danish Ballet. Mr. Welch was born in Melbourne to Marilyn Jones, O.B.E., and Garth Welch, A.M., two of Australia’s most gifted dancers of the 1960s and 1970s. In 1989 he was engaged as a dancer with The Australian Ballet, where he rose to the rank of leading soloist, performing various principal roles. He has also worked with internationally acclaimed choreographers such as Jiří Kylían, Nacho Duato, and Maurice Béjart. In 1995, Mr. Welch was named resident choreographer of The Australian Ballet. For his contributions to the world of dance, he was awarded the Order of Australia (AM) in June 2015. For Houston Ballet, he has choreographed more than twenty works including a new full-length narrative ballet Marie (2009), inspired by the life of the legendary Marie Antoinette and spectacular stagings of Swan Lake (2006), La Bayadère (2010), Romeo and Juliet (2015), Giselle (2016), and The Nutcracker (2016).
Artistic Profiles ERMANNO FLORIO Conductor Ermanno Florio has impressed both audiences and critics in the major centers of Europe, North America, and Asia. The extremely versatile Mr. Florio has well distinguished himself in genres of symphonic, operatic and balletic repertoire. Mr. Florio maintains an active conducting schedule which has included extensive engagements with the world’s major ballet companies. In 1985 Mr. Florio was appointed Principal Conductor and Music Administrator of The National Ballet of Canada by Erik Bruhn and since 1992 has held the position of Music Director of Houston Ballet. From 1998 to 2001 Mr. Florio held the position of Music Director of American Ballet Theatre. In March 2004 Mr. Florio was appointed Music Director of Het Nationale Ballet in Amsterdam and currently continues his relationship with the company as Principal Guest Conductor. Mr. Florio’s extensive discography includes DVD releases of critically acclaimed performances of The Sleeping Beauty, La Sylphide, Onegin, Cinderella, The Merry Widow, Alice, The Nutcracker, La Ronde and Le Corsaire with ABT which won an Emmy for Outstanding Classical Program in the Performing Arts. Mr. Florio’s DVD recording of Don Quichotte with L’Orchestre de L’Opera National de Paris also won the Cannes Classical Music Award for Best DVD in the category of Concert and Ballet Recordings. Mr. Florio’s music arrangement include scores for Patrice Bart’s Tchaikovsky, Das Flammende Hertz and Gustaf III: Stanton Welch’s Marie and La Bayadère, and Asami Maki’s La Dame aux Camelias.
BEN STEVENSON, O.B.E. Artistic Director Emeritus & Choreographer, The Sleeping Beauty Ben Stevenson served as artistic director of Houston Ballet from 1976-2003, raising the company from a regional troupe of 28 dancers to an internationally acclaimed ensemble of over 50 artists. During his tenure, he developed Houston Ballet’s repertory by acquiring the works of the world’s most respected choreographers, commissioning new works, staging the classics, and choreo¬graphing original works. For his contributions to international dance, Mr. Stevenson was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) by Queen Elizabeth II in the New Year’s Honors List in December 1999. In April 2000, he was presented with the Dance Magazine Award. In July 2003, he was appointed artistic director emeritus of Houston Ballet, and the company’s affiliated school was renamed Houston Ballet’s Ben Stevenson Academy in recognition of his enormous contribution to both Houston Ballet’s professional company and its school. In his position as artistic director emeritus, he contin¬ues to stage his works for Houston Ballet and for other companies nationally and internationally. Mr. Stevenson, a native of Portsmouth, England, received his dance training at the Arts Educational School in London. Upon his graduation, he was awarded the prestigious Adeline Genée Gold Medal, the highest award given to a dancer by the Royal Academy of Dancing. He performed with Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet and English National Ballet where, as a principal dancer, he performed leading roles in all the classics. In 1968, Rebekah Harkness invited him to New York to direct the newly formed Harkness Youth Dancers. After choreographing Cinderella in 1970 for National Ballet in Washington, D.C., he joined the company in 1971 as co-director with Frederic Franklin. In 1976, Mr. Stevenson was appointed artistic director of Houston Ballet. Over the next 27 years, he choreographed for Houston Ballet distinguished versions of the full-length works Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella, The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, Coppélia, Don Quixote, and original productions of Peer Gynt, Dracula, The Snow Maiden, and Cleopatra. In July 2003, Mr. Stevenson assumed the artistic directorship of Texas Ballet Theater in Fort Worth, Texas. May 2016 • 8

Canadian born Kandis Cook was raised in Alberta and completed her degree in Fine Art at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Upon moving to London in 1974, she studied under Percy Harris, who was then based with her design course at English National Opera. At the opera she found a new medium less precious and possibly freer than the politics of art and was attracted to the disposable nature of a work unique to theatre. However, since 1985 she has been painting and making images and in doing so found a process of developing a particular language of expression. Ms. Cook has designed for Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal Court, Dublin’s Abbey Theatre, London’s Lyric Hammersmith, London’s Royal Ballet (Turn of the Screw) and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal (Queen of Spades) as well as works for the Royal Danish Ballet and San Francisco Ballet. She has designed the costumes for six of Mr. Welch’s works: The Four Seasons (2007) and Marie (2009) for Houston Ballet; Velocity (2003) for The Australian Ballet, Taiko (1999) for San Francisco Ballet, Powder (1998) for Birmingham Royal Ballet, and Fingerprints (2000) for Cincinnati Ballet.
One of Australia’s best-known composers, Ross Edwards’ distinctive sound world combines shapes and patterns drawn from nature with a variety of musical resources which reflect and celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity. In his maninya (dance/chant) pieces he has tried to restore to ‘serious’ music such qualities as lightness, spontaneity and the impulse to dance. His belief in the healing power of music is reflected in a series of profoundly contemplative works influenced by birdsong and the mysterious polyphony of summer insects. Ross Edwards’ compositions include five symphonies, concertos, choral, chamber and vocal music, children’s music, film scores, a chamber opera and music for dance. His Dawn Mantras greeted the dawning of the new millennium from the sails of the Sydney Opera House in a worldwide telecast. His Oboe Concerto was rapturously received at its world premiere performance in Sydney Opera House which Diana Doherty premiered with the Sydney Symphony and Lorin Maazel, subsequently performing it with the New York Philharmonic. Recently completed commissions include Sacred Kingfisher Psalms; Piano Sonata for Bernadette Harvey; Full Moon Dances, a saxophone concerto for Amy Dickson; Five Senses, a song cycle to poems of Judith Wright; The Laughing Moon for the New Sydney Wind Quintet; and his String Quartet No. 3, Summer Dances, for the Hungarian Kelemen Quartet. New projects include Harp Mantras, for 7 harps and didjeridu; Frog and Star Cycle, a double concerto commissioned for saxophonist Amy Dickson, percussionist Colin Currie and the Sydney Symphony, will have its premiere in the Sydney Opera House in 2016.
FRANCIS CROESE Lighting Design, Velocity Newcastle-born Francis Croese began his dance studies with Tessa Maunder before attending the inaugural year of The Australian Ballet School in 1964. During his twelve-year dancing career Mr. Croese achieved the rank of senior soloist and partnered many ballerinas including Margo Fonteyn, Marilyn Jones, Marilyn Rowe, Lucette Aldous, Antoinette Sibley and Kathleen Gorham. Mr. Croese was appointed The Australian Ballet’s assistant stage manager in 1976, its stage manager the following year and its stage director in 1983. During this time he worked closely with the company’s Director or Productions, William Akers, on all aspects of production and lighting design, and in 1982 created the lighting for the Kozlovs’ production of The Nutcracker. In 1995, Francis was appointed technical director. During his technical career he worked with many of the world’s leading set and lighting designers and in some of the world’s great opera houses. At the end of 2007, Francis retired from The Australian Ballet. He has created lighting designs for The Australian Ballet, The Australian Ballet School, The Dancers Company, San Francisco Ballet’s UNited We Dance Festival, Houston Ballet and Japan Ballet Association. In 2013 he lit West Australian Ballet’s production on Onegin.
LISA J. PINKHAM Lighting Designer, Maninyas, Romeo and Juliet, The Sleeping Beauty Lisa J. Pinkham has designed lighting for over two hundred ballets, operas and plays. Her lighting can be seen in the repertories of many national companies. She enjoys a very successful relationship with Stanton Welch, and has designed the lighting for many of his ballets including Maninyas, Taiko, Tu Tu and Falling for San Francisco Ballet, Madame Butterfly for Boston Ballet and Houston Ballet, Clear for American Ballet Theatre, and Swan Lake, Play, Cinderella, Tapestry, Marie, The Rite of Spring, Sons de L’âme, Paquita¸ The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, Romeo and Juliet and Zodiac for Houston Ballet. DESMOND HEELEY Set and Costume Design, The Sleeping Beauty Desmond Heeley is an internationally acclaimed designer whose work spans the worlds of theater, opera, Broadway, and ballet. Winner of several Tony awards, Mr. Heeley’s productions for Houston Ballet include Ben Stevenson’s Coppélia, The Sleeping Beauty, The Snow Maiden, as well as Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Solitaire. He has designed sets and costumes for John Cranko, Sir Kenneth MacMillan, and many others. His designs have been seen in a number of productions at the Metropolitan Opera House, The Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Sadler’s Wells, La Scala in Milan, The National Ballet of Canada, Stuttgart Ballet, New York City Opera, and numerous productions on Broadway. He has worked with such luminaries of the stage and screen as Vivien Leigh, Richard Burton, Peter O’Toole, and Mikhail Baryshnikov.

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and Mercedes Benz of The Woodlands are proud to announce their partnership for the 2016 performing arts season. With a newly opened 60,000 sq. ft. dealership in The Woodlands, Mercedes Benz of The Woodlands is aiming to give back to the local community.
Milner and Agresti have aimed to instill their values of giving back to the community in many ways, including supporting The Pavilion’s nonprofit mission. Mercedes Benz of The Woodlands also provides paid time off to employees who volunteer locally, creating not only time, but incentive for their employees to get involved.
Co-owned by Bob Milner and Joe Agresti, Mercedes Benz of The Woodlands has been recognized as a “Best of the Best” dealer by Mercedes. However, it isn’t just their friendly customer service that helps set them apart in the community.
Why the partnership with The Pavilion? “That’s easy,” Milner said. “The Pavilion is such a foundational institution to The Woodlands community. It is so engrained in the local culture. For my family, alone, it has been a place where so many memories have been made. It was where my children saw their first opera and it was the place my wife and I traveled back to when we lived in California.”
Since starting his career in the auto industry Bob Milner has always operated on the idea that “those who can give back, should.”
As a growing member of The Woodlands area, Mercedes Benz of The Woodlands was poised to give to the many philanthropic efforts in the area. The Pavilion is thankful for the support that Mercedes Benz of The Woodlands has chosen to give to the performing arts.
“It’s something my dad always taught me,” said Milner. “I didn’t grow up with a lot of money, but my father told me that there is always someone you can help. I remember many holidays serving in soup kitchens as a kid and that has stuck with me over the years.”

Chris Carrillo, a retired postal inspector and his wife Annabelle, moved to The Woodlands from the Tucson area in 2000. Together, they first enjoyed The Pavilion by bringing their kids to the Houston Symphony and Houston Ballet events in an effort to help them grow an appreciation of the performing and visual arts.
According to Carrillo there are positive health benefits of being a Partner. “I recently read an article about 16 things to do to live to be 100 years old and The Pavilion Partners checks two of the suggestions off the list: volunteering and maintaining social relationships,” Carrillo said. “My position at the Info Booth keeps me observant and engaged.”
That same year Carrillo and his wife became members of The Pavilion Partners, the official volunteer organization of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion after fellow Partner Gene Wolfson encouraged them to get involved. Now, there are few events that Carrillo does not volunteer for as a Partner. “I especially like to work the shows that most others might not enjoy. I feel like it’s a way I can really help,” Carrillo stated. Melissa Hendricks, one of his supervisors agrees, “Chris is the best thing since shirt pockets. He is always willing to help where we need him.” At most events, you can find Carrillo at the South Plaza Info Booth greeting concert goers that are coming and going. “People like coming to The Pavilion
Carrillo is now on a mission to specifically recruit more volunteers who have a musical background for the Instrument Petting Zoo during The Pavilion’s pre-concert activities at the Performing Arts events. Even if you are seated on the hill, loud children can be very distracting for everyone. We want all of our guests to have the most enjoyable concert experience possible. Electronic Devices Take a break from the outside world! Please turn off all cellphones and other audible electronics. Photography and videography are NOT allowed during the performances, including with cellphones, at the request of the artists. Tablets, such as iPads and Kindles, are not permitted into the venue because they are a distraction to other guests and the artists. Late Seating Fashionably late? If you arrive after a performance has started, our ushers will do their best to seat you during an appropriate pause in the program. For certain performances, and at the request of the artist, guests seated in the orchestra section might have to wait until a transition is made between songs to proceed to their seats.
During the Performance Guests should refrain from entering and exiting their seats while a performance is in progress. If you must leave your seat, please proceed quickly and quietly to the nearest aisle or ask the nearest usher for assistance. Please be courteous to other members of the audience. Applause Not sure when to applaud and when not to? A good rule of thumb is to watch the conductor. The conductor should let you know when a piece is over by lowering both arms and turning to face the audience. After the Concert Bravo! As the applause dies down, the performers will put their instruments away and leave the stage. The house lights will be turned on so guests can exit safely. To Picnic, or Not to Picnic? Picnics are welcome at all performing arts events at The Pavilion. Guests can bring in any type of food item; however, beverages can not be brought into the venue. Guests are welcome to bring empty water bottles to fill at water fountains or to purchase beverages at our concessions stands.
Guest Information Tickets Tickets are available at The Pavilion Box Office Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the day of performances through intermission. American Express, MasterCard, VISA and Discover are accepted at The Pavilion Box Office. Tickets also are available at www.ticketmaster.com, all outlets, including Fiesta, select H-E-B and Walmart locations or charge by phone at 800-745-3000. For guests with hearing impairments, Ticketmaster’s TDD number is 800-755-6244. Groups of 20 or more are eligible for discounts for performing arts and selected contemporary events. Preferred parking is available for all events in the on-site Town Center Garage. For most events, lots open 90 minutes prior to the performance. Food and Beverages Food and beverage items are available from The Pavilion concession areas in the North, South and Lawn plazas. Concessions are operated by ARAMARK Sports & Entertainment. Food can be brought in during all performing arts events; however, beverages are not allowed into the venue. At contemporary events, each guest is permitted to bring in a one gallon plastic bag of food for personal consumption. Restrooms Permanent restrooms are located in all three plazas.
Children For most contemporary events, children 5 and under are admitted free to the lawn without a ticket. At most performing arts events, children are admitted free with their parents to the mezzanine and lawn areas. All children must have a ticket to sit in orchestra-level seating. Inclement Weather All events at The Pavilion are rain or shine. Pavilion events are not canceled due to rain. If it rains on the day of the event, guests are encouraged to wear rain apparel. ATMs ATMs are located in the North, South and Lawn plazas of The Pavilion. Prohibited Items To ensure the enjoyment and safety of all our guests, the following items may not be brought into The Pavilion: Animals, aerosol cans, audio and video equipment, cameras, food, beverages, non-plastic bottles or bottles with lids, fireworks, laptops, laser pointers, lawn chairs, portable televisions, radios, strollers, selfie sticks, tablets (such as iPads and Kindles) and weapons. Cameras and Recording Devices Small, non-professional cameras are usually allowed at most contemporary concerts. No professional, detachable lens cameras are permitted into the venue. No audio or video is permitted at any event at The Pavilion. Camera policies are dictated by the artist and are subject to change. Photography and video, including with cellphones, are NOT allowed at Houston Symphony concerts, Houston Grand Opera or Houston Ballet events at their request.
Lawn Chairs For comfortable hillside seating, guests may bring blankets or use The Pavilion’s specially designed lawn chairs free of charge for all performing arts events.

First Aid Trained medical professionals are on duty at all Pavilion events. If medical help is needed, ask any Pavilion staff member for assistance.

Information Booths Information booths are located at the gated entrances in the North, South and Lawn plazas. Special Events The 1,600-square-foot Woodforest Bank Club, located just off The Pavilion’s North Plaza, is available for lease year-round. Outfitted with large video screens, multimedia equipment with surround sound, a copier, fax and dedicated telephone and modem lines, the Club is designed for business meetings and special, private events. For rental information, call 281-363-0900. The House of Blues Lounge in The Pavilion Event Center is open to all ticket-holders at most contemporary concerts.
