about. Seeing the students come back and perform is so rewarding.”

Born in Ohio, JoAnne and Randy Lowry met while in college at Ohio State University. The pair moved to Texas in 1977 and then to The Woodlands in 2000. Randy was employed by Shell, but left the company to work for an executive search business for 34 years. He has owned the company since 2001. JoAnne worked for an insurance company, and stayed at home with their children.

JoAnne enjoys working the Children’s Festival, Fine Arts Education Day and Partners Instrument Petting Zoo. “I love to watch the kids when they come to our events. When they see the orchestra for the first time, they get this look in their eyes,” said JoAnne. “I love to be able to give them that experience.”

The Lowrys learned about The Pavilion Partners, the official volunteer organization of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, from a friend who told the couple they needed to get involved with the organization. Since joining, Randy immediately began serving on the board and became president after one year. He served two terms as president as well as on The Pavilion Board of Directors. “To be involved in such big decisions like rebuilding after Hurricane Ike in 2008 was such a phenomenal experience,” said Randy. For 11 years, Randy has chaired the Annual Wine Dinner & Auction committee, benefitting scholarships for local students majoring in the fine arts in college. “The educational component of The Pavilion is why we have been involved for so long,” said Randy. “The scholarships are what it’s all

In addition to being involved with Partners, JoAnne also is involved with the CypressWoodlands Junior Forum, Woodlands United Methodist Church and the Montgomery County Women’s Center. Randy was a member of the Rotary Club of Houston for 15 years and served as chairman of the Lombardi Award. He also has been involved with the Montgomery County Women’s Center and the American Cancer Society. “We always believed it’s our responsibility to give back to the community we live in,” said Randy. The Lowrys have been married for 44 years and have two sons and three granddaughters. For more information on joining Partners, visit www.woodlandscenter. org/partners.

Sponsor Spotlight In each issue of OnStage, we turn the spotlight onto one of our sponsors, a gesture of thanks for their invaluable contributions to the many things we work hard to accomplish. George P. Mitchell passed away July 26, 2013, at the age of 94. In 1974, he created The Woodlands, a 28,000-acre master-planned community. He was a pioneer and visionary. Without Mitchell’s dedication and support, programs at The Pavilion including performing arts events and educational outreach events would not be possible. Mitchell along with his wife, Cynthia Woods Mitchell, had a passion for the arts. Cynthia’s commitment that the arts should be accessible to all helped create a first-class outdoor venue for popular and classical music, opera, dance, and the performing arts. Her dream of this kind of venue became a reality when The Pavilion opened with a star-studded gala weekend in April 1990. The Houston Symphony performed April 27, Frank Sinatra April 28 and Alabama with Clint Black on April 29. In 1992, thanks to a generous gift from the Mitchells to the Houston Symphony’s endowment fund, The Pavilion became the official Summer Home of the Houston Symphony. As a result, The Pavilion presents a series of performances featuring the symphony every season. Due to Mitchell’s support, the venue has emerged as one of the premier amphitheaters in

the world, hosting internationally acclaimed performing arts organizations including Houston Ballet and Houston Grand Opera as well as major concert tours. Mitchell was very involved with The Pavilion. He loved to visit during the annual Children’s Festival and Musical Scores events. He was instrumental in the rebuilding efforts of the venue after Hurricane Ike damaged the roof in 2008. Mitchell’s donation of $1 million helped open the venue back up bigger and better than ever. A memorial tribute service in Mitchell’s honor was held Aug. 8 at The Pavilion. The Houston Symphony and the Texas A&M Singing Cadets performed and many community leaders and family members spoke at the service. Mitchell leaves a lasting legacy for his contributions to science, energy and the environment, as well as the arts. He was married to his wife Cynthia for more than 65 years and raised 10 children. He has 23 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Concert Etiquette

Children The Pavilion is a family-friendly venue and we love to see families at our performing arts events. However, please be courteous of both the orchestra and those around you by keeping youngsters from talking loudly and running around during the performance. Even if you are seated on the hill, loud children can be very distracting for everyone. We want all of our guests to have the most enjoyable concert experience possible.

Tickets

During the Performance Guests should refrain from entering and exiting their seats while a performance is in progress. If you must leave your seat, please proceed quickly and quietly to the nearest aisle or ask the nearest usher for assistance. Please be courteous to other members of the audience. Applause Not sure when to applaud and when not to? A good rule of thumb is to watch the conductor. The conductor should let you know when a piece is over by lowering both arms and turning to face the audience. After the Concert Bravo! As the applause dies down, the performers will put their instruments away and leave the stage. The house lights will be turned on so guests can exit safely. To Picnic, or Not to Picnic?
