Young and innocent, passionate about dancing, Giselle, a peasant girl, is in love.

Berthe, Giselle’s overprotective and superstitious mother, is concerned for her daughter’s delicate and fragile health. She warns Giselle that too much dancing could be dangerous and that young girls who die before marriage are destined to become Wilis – vengeful, ghostlike creatures.

The unexpected arrival of a hunting party led by the Prince of Courland and his daughter Bathilde – the real fiancée of Albrecht – brings more dancing to the autumn harvest celebration. Amidst the joyous festivities, Hilarion reveals Albrecht’s true identity. The shock of Albrecht’s betrayal brings Giselle to a state where she loses her reason. Devastated, she collapses and dies of a broken heart.

Intermission ACT II In the gloomy village cemetery, Myrtha, the Queen of the Wilis, holds her mystical and supernatural powers over the magical sisterhood. Each night between dusk and dawn, the Wilis do her bidding, seeking only male prey that they force to dance until they are exhausted or their hearts give out, or until they are so weak, the men can be thrown to their deaths in the nearby lake.

Hilarion mourns by Giselle’s grave but flees in terror when he is visited by the ghostly forms. Albrecht, sad and remorseful, brings field flowers to Giselle’s grave. He senses her spirit around him. Hilarion falls victim to the Queen of the Wilis. He succumbs to her powers and to those of her spirit helpers and drowns in the lake. Giselle defies Myrtha and dances all through the night until Albrecht is at the very point of exhaustion. The sound of the church bell heralds the dawn. The Wilis vanish and the spirit of Giselle disappears with the soft morning light. Albrecht is saved and is left with only her memory to cherish. 5 • www.woodlandscenter.org

Artistic Director Stanton Welch Houston Ballet Artistic Director (Choreographer, Swan Lake)

Stanton Welch’s choreographic career developed during his time with The Australian Ballet. In 1990, he received his first choreographic commission from the company, marking the beginning of a series of commissioned works over the next 14 years and developing his diverse choreographic style. For The Australian Ballet, he has created The Three of Us (1990); Of Blessed Memory (1991), for which he was voted best new choreographer in 1992 by readers of the British magazine Dance & Dancers; Divergence (1994), which has been performed at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and City Center in New York; full-length productions of Madame Butterfly (1995) and Cinderella (1997); Red Earth (1996); X (1999); and Velocity (2003). In 2005, Welch created a lavish new staging of The Sleeping Beauty for The Australian Ballet. Madame Butterfly has become a signature work for Welch internationally, and is in the repertoires of Houston Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, Atlanta Ballet, Singapore Dance Theatre and Boston Ballet.

Born in Kazan in the USSR and educated in Leningrad at the famed Vaganova Choreographic Institute – sometimes referred to as the Kirov Ballet School – Ai-Gul Gaisina graduated from the class of Naima Valievna Baltacheva. Traveling throughout South America, Cuba, Europe and Australia, she partnered with the legendary Alexander Godunov before joining The Stanislavsky Ballet Theatre in Moscow, where she created several principal roles, the most notable being in Khatchaturian’s Gaynee. In 1973, Gaisina left Russia and, at the invitation of Sir Robert Helpmann and Dame Peggy van Praagh, joined The Australian Ballet where, amongst other roles, she danced Ronald Petit’s Carmen, Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty, Kitri in Nureyev’s Don Quixote, Michelle in Gillian Lynne’s Fool on the Hill and Valencienne in Helpmann’s magnificent The Merry Widow. The birth of her children also signaled the beginning of her teaching career which began at the Victorian College of the Arts where Anne Woolliams was principal. In 1983, at the invitation of Dame Margaret Scott, Gaisina joined The Australian Ballet School where she taught for 10 years before joining The Australian Ballet once more – this time as guest teacher and coach, under the direction of Maina Gielguid and subsequently Ross Stretton and now David McAllister. Gaisina has, by invitation, taught at The Royal Danish Ballet, Houston Ballet and the Hong Kong Ballet company. During The Australian Ballet’s 2009 season, Gaisina danced the role of “Clara - the elder” at the Sydney Opera House and at the State Theatre in Melbourne, in Graeme Murphy’s highly acclaimed production of Nutcracker - The Story of Clara. Outside a busy professional dance career, she is an accomplished painter. She is married to producer Andrew Guild and has a son, Tim. In July 2010, Gaisina staged her own production of Don Quixote for The Australian Ballet’s Dancers Company. The production, which will remain in the repertoire for several years, has been reviewed by Karen Van Ulzen of Dance Australia who writes “Don Quixote by Ai-Gul Gaisina is full of fun, humour and virtuoso dancing ... laugh-out-loud fun as well as fabulous dancing.” Don Quixote also toured Australia in 2011.

In July 2003, Welch assumed the leadership of Houston Ballet, America’s fourth largest ballet company, as artistic director. He is one of the most sought after choreographers of his generation, having created works for such prestigious international companies as Houston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, The Australian Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet and Royal Danish Ballet. Welch was born in Melbourne to Marilyn Jones, O.B.E., and Garth Welch, A.M., two of Australia’s most Photographer gifted dancers of the 1960s and 1970s. In 1986, he began his training at the late age of 17, quickly winning Pam Francis a scholarship to San Francisco Ballet School. In 1989, he was engaged as a dancer with The Australian Ballet, where he rose to the rank of leading soloist, performing such principal roles as Des Grieux in Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Manon, Lensky in John Cranko’s Onegin, Camille in Ronald Hynd’s The Merry Widow, and Alan Strang in Equus. He also has worked with internationally acclaimed choreographers such as Jirí Kylían, Nacho Duato and Maurice Béjart. In 1995, Welch was named resident choreographer of The Australian Ballet. That same year, he was commissioned to create Corroboree (Wildlife) for The Australian Ballet to perform at “United We Dance,” a dance festival in San Francisco celebrating the 50th anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Charter and featuring major companies from across the world premiering new works. Welch has been extremely active internationally, receiving numerous commissions from the world’s leading companies. For Houston Ballet, he has choreographed 17 works: Indigo (1999), Bruiser (2000), Tales of Texas (2004), Blindness (2004), Bolero (2004), Nosotros (2005), Brigade (2006), a spectacular new staging of Swan Lake (2006), The Four Seasons (2007), Punctilious (2007), The Core (2008), A Doll’s House (2008), Mediæval Bæbes (2008), Marie (2009), Elements (2009), 40 (2009), La Bayadère (2010), The Ladies (2010), The Gentlemen (2011) and Tapestry (2012). For San Francisco Ballet: Maninyas (1996), Taiko (1999), Tu Tu (2003), Falling (2005) and Naked (2008). For American Ballet Theatre: Clear (2001), two one-act ballets as part of Within You Without You: A Tribute to George Harrison (2002); and a new version of Carmina Burana as part of the evening-length work HereAfter (2003). For BalletMet: Evolution and Don Quixote, both full-length works. For Atlanta Ballet: A Dance in the Garden of Mirth (2000). For Royal Danish Ballet: Ønsket (1998) and Ander (1999). For Birmingham Royal Ballet: Powder (1998). For Moscow Dance Theatre: Green (2000) and OPUS X (2001), both created for Nina Ananiashvili’s group. Welch also has staged works for Colorado Ballet; Cincinnati Ballet; Tulsa Ballet; Texas Ballet Theater; The Royal Ballet School; Singapore Dance Theatre; Royal New Zealand Ballet; and Fugate/Bahiri Ballet NY.

Students Score a Special Performance at The Pavilion’s Musical Scores Students from the Greater Houston area are rewarded with a performance at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion for an educational outreach program, Musical Scores, May 9. Approximately 5,600 students and teachers from 26 schools and nine districts are expected to attend this 17th annual event. Since its inception in 1995, Musical Scores, one of The Pavilion’s most successful educational outreach programs, has grown from serving 200 students its first year to nearly 5,600 participants this year. Musical Scores primarily serves academically at-risk middle school students who earn the privilege to attend a special event at The Pavilion by displaying model behavior and achieving specific scholastic goals. To be rewarded, students must accomplish goals as established by their teachers and/or administrators. These goals might include academic accomplishments, improving attendance, book-reading objectives, raising test scores, modifying classroom behavior, or whatever the administrators choose. Once the students achieve their goals, or “musical scores,” they are rewarded with this free performance and lunch at The Pavilion. The students also receive complimentary Musical Scores T-shirts for their achievement. Three Long-Time Supporters Make Free Seating Possible for Giselle

The Center for the Performing Arts at The Woodlands would like to thank the following contributors for their financial support of our 2012 Performing Arts Season and Educational Outreach Programs as of April 26 printing deadline.

The Cynthia Wood Mitchell Pavilion gratefully acknowledges the support of The Wortham Foundation, The Cullen Trust for the Performing Arts and George P. Mitchell that makes free mezzanine and lawn seating possible for tonight’s performance of Giselle by Houston Ballet. Among the most lasting contributions from Mr. and Mrs. Gus Wortham to the city of Houston was the creation of The Wortham Foundation in 1958. The Worthams were great philanthropists, entrepreneurs and civic leaders in the Houston community. Upholding the standards, traditions and values of the Worthams, the Foundation focuses on supporting nonprofit cultural organizations with an emphasis on the performing arts, museums and more. The Pavilion has been part of The Wortham Foundation’s giving for more than 10 years. The Wortham Foundation also supports The Pavilion’s entire performing arts season. The Cullen Trust for the Performing Arts (the “Trust”) has supported Houston Ballet’s performances at The Pavilion since 2007. The Trust was formed in 1979 for the purpose of providing financial assistance to performing arts institutions located in the State of Texas and especially the Greater Houston metropolitan area. Its trustees believe the Trust should benefit both present and future generations in a permanent and significant way. George P. Mitchell, former chairman of Mitchell Energy & Development Corp. and founder of The Woodlands, along with his late wife, Cynthia Woods Mitchell, for whom The Pavilion is named, dreamed of creating a first-class performing arts facility for The Woodlands since the community’s inception in 1974. They envisioned such a facility as a venue for performing arts events as well as popular music. The dream became a reality when The Pavilion opened in April 1990. Since that time, The Mitchells have been generous supporters of The Pavilion’s performing arts programs, including tonight’s performance of Giselle by Houston Ballet. “We are very proud to have the financial support of The Wortham Foundation, The Cullen Trust for the Performing Arts and George P. Mitchell, three major funders of arts organizations in Houston,” said Jerry MacDonald, president and CEO of The Pavilion. “Their support enables us to offer free seating at performances such as tonight’s Houston Ballet performance, helping make the arts more accessible to the community.” The support of these foundations and George P. A Founding Partners Member and Dedicated Volunteer Professionally, she has worked as an elementary school teacher and devoted much of her time to improving the lives of children and making the arts accessible to everyone. In addition to volunteering for The Pavilion Partners, Battle has served as president of Cypress Woodlands Junior Forum and National Charity League (The Woodlands Chapter), as well as served on the board of directors for Goodwill Industries of Houston, Women Helping Women and Interfaith. She also is involved with Montgomery County Women’s Center and The Woodlands Community Presbyterian Church.

Nancy Battle, a long-time resident of The Woodlands, has been involved with The Pavilion Partners from the very start. She immediately took the position of president and began assisting with the creation of numerous educational outreach and fundraising programs for The Pavilion. She was instrumental in creating The Pavilion Partners Fine Arts Scholarship Program, which has awarded more than $500,000 in scholarships to aspiring students of the visual and performing arts over the past 13 years. She also was a founding member of Partners’ Annual Wine Dinner & Auction, an event that raises money for the Fine Arts Scholarship Program as well as The Pavilion’s educational outreach programs. Battle helped create The Pavilion’s annual Children’s Festival, a four-day event designed to educate and entertain elementary and intermediate school students through a fascinating lineup of storytelling, music, dance and audience participation. Over the years, she has served on numerous committees and volunteered for many educational programs held at The Pavilion.

Awards Battle has received include the North Harris Community College Humanitarian Award, the Woman of Distinction award for three years and The Woodlands Hometown Hero award. She is the mother of two grown children, Kelly and Christine, and has four grandchildren. The following information about concert etiquette will enhance your visit and help ensure that all of our guests enjoy their arts experience to the fullest. Electronic Devices

During the Performance

Take a break from the outside world! Please turn off all cellphones and other audible electronics. Recording devices and photography are not allowed, including with cellular phones.

Guest should refrain from entering and exiting their seats while a performance is in progress. If you must leave your seat, please proceed quickly and quietly to the nearest aisle or ask the nearest usher for assistance. Please be courteous to other members of the audience.

Late Seating Fashionably late? If you arrive after a performance has started, our ushers will do their best to seat you during an appropriate pause in the program. For certain performances, and at the request of the artist, guests seated in the orchestra section might have to wait until a transition is made between songs to proceed to their seats.

Applause Not sure when to applaud and when not to? A good rule of thumb is to watch the conductor. The conductor should let you know when a piece is over by lowering both arms and turning to face the audience. After the Concert

Children The Pavilion is a family-friendly venue and we love to see families at our performing arts events. However, please be courteous of both the orchestra and those around you by keeping youngsters from talking loudly and running around during the performance. Even if you are seated on the hill, loud children can be very distracting for everyone. We want all of our guests to have the most enjoyable concert experience possible.

Bravo! As the applause dies down, the performers will put their instruments away and the leave the stage. The house lights will be turned on so guests can exit safely. To Picnic, or Not to Picnic? Picnics are welcome at all performing arts events at The Pavilion. Guests can bring in any type of food item; however, beverages can not be brought into the venue. Guests are welcome to bring empty water bottles to fill at water fountains or to purchase beverages at our concessions stands.

Tickets are available at The Pavilion Box Office Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the day of performances through intermission. American Express, MasterCard, VISA and Discover are accepted at The Pavilion Box Office.

Pavilion concerts are not canceled due to rain. If it rains on the day of the concert, guests are encouraged to wear rain apparel.

For most contemporary events, children 5 and under are admitted free to the lawn without a ticket. At most performing arts events, children are admitted free with their parents to the mezzanine and lawn areas. All children must have a ticket to sit in orchestra-level seating.

Parking

Prohibited Items

Guests may park free of charge in lighted and patrolled lots convenient to The Pavilion. Preferred parking is available for all events in the on-site Town Center Garage. For most events, lots open 90 minutes prior to the performance.

To ensure the enjoyment and safety of all our guests, the following items may not be brought into The Pavilion: glass bottles, cans, beverages, food (except picnic meals at performing arts events only), cameras, recording devices, weapons, aerosol cans, strollers, laser pointers, animals, tablets (iPads), laptops and lawn chairs.

Food and Beverages Food and beverage items are available from The Pavilion concession areas in the North, South and Lawn plazas. Concessions are operated by ARAMARK Sports & Entertainment. Food can be brought in during all performing arts events; however, beverages are not allowed into the venue.

Cameras and Recording Devices

Restrooms, Telephones Permanent restrooms and telephones are located in all three plazas.

For comfortable hillside seating, guests may bring blankets or use The Pavilion’s specially designed lawn chairs free of charge for all performing arts events.

First Aid Trained medical professionals are on duty at all Pavilion events. If medical help is needed, ask any Pavilion staff member for assistance. Special Events The 1,600-square-foot Woodforest Bank Club, located just off The Pavilion’s North Plaza, is available for lease year-round. Outfitted with large video screens, multimedia equipment with surround sound, a copier, fax and dedicated telephone and modem lines, the Club is designed for business meetings and special, private events. For rental information, call 281-363-0900. The House of Blues Hospitality Tent provides a tented outdoor setting for pre- or post-concert gatherings at most contemporary concerts.
