Welcome to the 23rd season of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, also known as the Summer Home of the Houston Symphony and the Home Away from Home of Houston Ballet. This year, our performing arts events include nine Houston Symphony concerts, a full-length ballet titled “Giselle” by Houston Ballet, a free performance by the Texas Music Festival Orchestra and the 17th Annual Children’s Festival.

We are excited to bring back the Houston Symphony on Dec. 7 for a very special holiday program called Holly Jolly Symphony Spectacular. This is the second time in 23 seasons that this concert will be presented. It is the perfect family event to get everyone in the holiday spirit.

We kick off the season April 20 with The Music of Queen: A Rock Symphony featuring Board of Directors the Houston Symphony. On April 25, the Houston Symphony performs The Art of Baseball conducted by Robert Franz. We are honored to have the “Voice of the Houston Astros” and A. Steve Arizpe Ralph C. McIngvale Joseph P. Ash C. Grant Mitchell Hall of Famer Milo Hamilton join the symphony to narrate “Casey at the Bat.” John H. Beaird Steve A. Morrow

: Queen A Rock Symphony

Bridging the gulf between classic rock and classical music, conductor and arranger Brent Havens takes the podium to present The Music of Queen: A Rock Symphony in a program Havens scored to extend the listening experience of Queen’s exceptional tunes. Amplified with a full rock band, vocals and featuring the Houston Symphony, Havens and his ensemble capture Queen’s distinct sound while presenting some familiar and lots of new musical colors. “We’ve successfully merged four different groups with the orchestra and it seemed to me the next logical step in selecting a group was Queen. As always, we wanted to keep the foundation of the music as close to the originals as we could and then add additional colors to enhance what Queen had done,” Havens said. “The wonderful thing with an orchestra is that you have an entire palette of sounds to call upon.” As with the other shows, Havens understood that Queen fans would want to hear the original, familiar elements of the music. He therefore followed exact line arrangements and used the orchestra for enhancement. With a 50-piece orchestra hanging on his every cue, Havens had a large landscape to work with. Just among the double-reed instruments, including the oboe, English horn and bassoon, there are so many colors. Add in the violins, violas, cellos, basses and woodwinds, or more pure sounds from instruments like a flute or clarinet, and the selection grows. Then consider the entire brass section - trumpets, trombones, French horns, and the lower brass such as the bass trombone and tuba - and you realize the variety of choices available to accompany a distorted electric guitar, bass, keyboard and drums. Queen’s rich chord structures and amazing vocal harmonies made the music an ideal choice for scoring. “When I sat down to begin scoring the show, it was amazing how comfortably the orchestra fit within the structure of the music,” Havens said. “Innovative chord progressions, wonderful melodies and the astounding vocals of Freddie Mercury make the music a perfect choice to orchestrate. And having world-class musicians in every city where we present the show makes the music that much more compelling.”

Brent Havens

Berklee College of Music-trained arranger and conductor Brent Havens has written music for orchestras, feature films and virtually every kind of television. His TV work includes movies for networks such as ABC, CBS and The Family Channel, commercials, sports music for networks such as ESPN and even cartoons. Havens also worked with The Doobie Brothers and the Milwaukee Symphony, arranging and conducting the combined group for Harley Davidson’s 100th Anniversary Birthday Party Finale attended by more than 150,000 fans.

Havens most recent film work includes the score for the film “Quo Vadis,” a Premier Pictures remake of the 1956 gladiator film. Havens is arranger and guest conductor for five symphonic rock programs including The Music of Led Zeppelin, The Music of the Doors, The Music of Pink Floyd and The Music of the Eagles. His latest endeavor is The Music of Queen.

Brody Dolyniuk

The Music of

The Music of Queen: A Rock Symphony

Brody Dolyniuk remembers mimicking voices even as a child, listening to old records and tapes. He is a gifted, selftaught musician, capable of playing several instruments, with a particular knack for capturing the voices and mannerisms of classic characters from music, TV and movies.

His first professional gigs were at piano bars in several U.S. cities where he learned to charm audiences and expand his musical repertoire. With a longing to perform the music of the many rock bands that inspired him, Dolyniuk assembled Yellow Brick Road, unquestionably Las Vegas’ most successful classic rock band. Since 1997, YBR has been reshaping the casino entertainment scene by bringing a rock concert atmosphere to showrooms previously reserved for Top 40-style lounge acts. Along the way, Dolyniuk has made numerous radio and TV appearances, earned a spot in the finals of two national singing competitions, and even self-produced several large rock production-style shows utilizing multimedia, lasers, comedy and special effects. In 2007, he lent his vocal talents by singing several tracks on the megahit video game “Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock,” and has already done several more for the new Konami game “Rock Revolution.” As a devout classic rock/Queen fan, Dolyniuk’s enthusiasm, vocal ability and on-stage energy were the perfect fit for The Music of Queen. Concert Etiquette The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion offers concertgoers live performing arts events in a picturesque setting featuring such world-renowned organizations as the Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet and Texas Music Festival Orchestra. The following information about concert etiquette will enhance your visit and help ensure that all of our guests enjoy their arts experience to the fullest. Electronic Devices Take a break from the outside world! Please turn off all cellphones and other audible electronics. Recording devices and photography are not allowed, including with cellular phones. Late Seating Fashionably late? If you arrive after a performance has started, our ushers will do their best to seat you during an appropriate pause in the program. For certain performances, and at the request of the artist, guests seated in the orchestra section might have to wait until a transition is made between songs to proceed to their seats. Children The Pavilion is a family-friendly venue and we love to see families at our performing arts events. However, please be courteous of both the orchestra and those around you by keeping youngsters from talking loudly and running around during the performance. Even if you are seated on the hill, loud children can be very distracting for everyone. We want all of our guests to have the most enjoyable concert experience possible.

During the Performance Guest should refrain from entering and exiting their seats while a performance is in progress. If you must leave your seat, please proceed quickly and quietly to the nearest aisle or ask the nearest usher for assistance. Please be courteous to other members of the audience. Applause Not sure when to applaud and when not to? A good rule of thumb is to watch the conductor. The conductor should let you know when a piece is over by lowering both arms and turning to face the audience. After the Concert Bravo! As the applause dies down, the performers will put their instruments away and the leave the stage. The house lights will be turned on so guests can exit safely.

As music director of the Boise Philharmonic and associate conductor of the Houston Symphony, Robert Franz’s appeal as a first-rate conductor, energetic educator and enthusiastic showman has been acclaimed by critics, composers and audiences of all ages. In his role with the Houston Symphony, Franz leads with vibrant, athletic and entertaining direction in a broad range of creative educational and family concerts.

A champion of new music, Franz has conducted numerous world premieres and works by living composers and worked with some of today’s finest classical soloists. He has been invited to guest conduct orchestras throughout the United States. In addition to guest conducting the Virginia Symphony, San Antonio Symphony and Musiqa (Houston) this season, he returns to the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival in Alaska and the South Bend Symphony Orchestra. Franz was recognized by ASCAP with the Leonard Bernstein Award for Educational Programming in 2008 with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and in 2001 with the Louisville Orchestra. The Louisville Orchestra’s award led to the creation of an education program for Kentucky Educational Television titled “Creating Music and Stories.” Winner of the 2008 BPO/ECMEA Music Educators Award for Excellence, Franz is a strong supporter of arts education, creating arts education programs for the Carolina Chamber Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, Louisville Orchestra, West End Chamber Ensemble and Winston-Salem Piedmont Triad Symphony. As associate conductor of the Louisville Orchestra, he revitalized an ASCAP award-winning new music concert series, and served as co-host of “In a Different Key,” a weekly contemporary classical music radio program on WUOL. The Idaho Education Committee recognized Franz’s passion for music education this March when they asked him to address the Idaho Legislation on the importance of music in education. Further strengthening his commitment to bringing music education to young people, he authored his first children’s book with a CD titled “Stella’s Magical Musical Tour of America.” He hopes to introduce children to classical music by incorporating various musical excerpts intertwined throughout the story of a girl’s journey in a hot air balloon. This book also will be the theme of a Boise Philharmonic family concert in 2012. In addition to his current posts, Franz served as the music director of the Mansfield Symphony in Ohio from 2003-10, resident conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic from 2005-09 and associate conductor of the Louisville Orchestra from 1997-06. He also has led the Winston-Salem Piedmont Triad Symphony, Louisville Youth Orchestra and Winston-Salem Youth Symphony. Milo Hamilton recently completed his 27th season as the “Voice of the Houston Astros.” Already one of the all-time great broadcasters in major league history, he was inducted into his fifth Hall of Fame in January 2011.

Hamilton has been on the air for 66 years, beginning his baseball broadcasting career in the Three-I League in Davenport, Iowa, in 1950. He has been broadcasting major league baseball since 1953, including stops with the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Atlanta Braves and Pittsburgh Pirates. Hamilton was the play-by-play announcer of the 1979 World Champion Pirates and the 2005 National League Champion Houston Astros which he joined in 1985. His list of baseball-related honors dates back to 1962 when he was named Chicago’s Sportsman of the Year. Hamilton also won the inaugural Allen Russell Award for distinguished achievement in 1996, the inaugural 1997 RBI Foundation honor for his charitable work, and received the Great Communicator Award from the Press Club of Houston in 2000. Hamilton has earned the industry’s highest honor, receiving the Ford C. Frick award in 1992 from the Baseball Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994, the Radio Hall of Fame in 2000, the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2002, and the Iowa Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2011. The Astros organization honored Hamilton in 2009, dedicating Hamilton Street on the east side of Minute Maid Park as “Milo Hamilton Way,” and for his 65 years in baseball with the creation of the Milo Hamilton Scholarship in 2010. Hamilton hosts an off-season live radio talk show, “Astroline,” which features current and former players as guests. In 2005, Hamilton elected to only work home games beginning in 2006, but has made select road trips since then. This broadcasting legend co-authored the book “Making Airwaves, 60 Years at Milo’s Microphone” in 2006. He was born in Fairfield, Iowa, and graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in radio speech. and provides educational programming workshops at the National Repertory Orchestra during the summer. Franz received his Master of Music in Conducting and his Bachelor of Music in Oboe Performance from North Carolina School of the Arts. He has participated in conducting workshops in the Czech Republic, St. Petersburg (Russia), Nashville, the Festival at Sandpoint, and was a participant in the 1997 National Conductor Preview. When not on the podium, Franz is an avid runner and a proponent of the Alexander technique. April 2012 • 4

Caracio and her late husband, Vince, helped create Partners’ Annual Wine Dinner & Auction, an event that raises money for fine arts scholarships and The Pavilion’s educational outreach programs. Over the past 13 years, Partners has awarded more than $500,000 in scholarships to aspiring students of the visual and performing arts. Caracio also volunteers for numerous fundraising events of Partners and has been an active

member of its board of directors for many years.

The mother of two grown children, Susan and Mark, and two lovely granddaughters, Caracio’s love for her children and grandchildren overflows into our community. Partners is fortunate to have such a wonderful volunteer dedicated to making the arts accessible to children of all ages and improving the lives of children in need.

She began her professional life as a teacher and is dedicated to improving the lives of children. In addition to volunteering for Partners, Caracio is an enthusiastic volunteer for Montgomery County Youth Services. As a member of the MCYS development committee, she has been a vital part of the organization’s annual Celebrity Golf Classic and “Ladies Night Out” fundraisers for years. She also serves on the Alley Theatre’s board of directors and the Grogan’s Point Residents’ Association.

Sylvia Caracio has been a dedicated volunteer with The Pavilion Partners since the very beginning. When she first moved to Texas nearly 20 years ago, she joined The Woodlands Living Arts Council. While serving on the organization’s board of directors, the WLAC became The Pavilion Partners, the official volunteer organization for The Pavilion.
