A WORD FROM JERRY We have kicked off our 27th Season of presenting world class entertainment in both our contemporary and performing arts events. So far we have enjoyed shows from among others, Mumford & Sons, Journey, Florence and the Machine, Jimmy Buffett and of course the wonderful performing arts performances from the Houston Symphony and the Houston Ballet. As you will read in this issue, we are excited to have officially opened The Pavilion Event Center in April. The venue will help The Pavilion stay competitive and attractive to artists. Additionally, The Pavilion was proud to host over 5,000 students from 33 schools across 13 districts for Musical Scores. We value the opportunity to reward students who have met a set goal with a performance on the Main Stage. Please be sure to read more about this on page 2. Congratulations to the just over 3,000 high school graduates from College Park High School, Conroe High School, Oak Ridge High School and The Woodlands High School. The Pavilion is honored to be the site of this momentous occasion in your lives. I also want to thank our retiring Board Members Mark E. Ellis, C. Grant Mitchell, Steve A. Morrow, John Robichau and Janet Wong for their tireless effort and commitment to our organization over the last several years. I welcome and look forward to working with our new board members Paul Carroll, Sarah Epley, Michelle Riley-Brown, Adrienne Ropp, Andrew E. Steinberg, Keith Winters and our incoming chairman Carol Garner. A special thanks to Joe Ash for his leadership and guidance as chairman for the last 2 years. There are many more events to enjoy during our 27th season. Come out, bring the family and enjoy this world class venue.
Houston Symphony - July 3 Kick off America’s birthday celebration at Star-Spangled Salute as the Houston Symphony takes the Main Stage, Sunday, July 3 at 8 p.m. The symphony will perform a variety of patriotic favorites led by conductor Steven Reineke whose boundless enthusiasm and exceptional artistry have made him one of the nation’s most sought-after pops conductors, composers and arrangers. Featured artists include Broadway husband and wife duo Kristine Reese and Billy Tighe. The concert is free courtesy of The Woodlands Development Company who has sponsored this beloved event 27 consecutive times. Copresidents Alex Sutton and Tim Welbes expressed, “The Woodlands Development Company and The Howard Hughes Corporation are honored to sponsor the Star-Spangled Salute concert at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. We have been a proud supporter of this Independence Eve, since its inception in 1990. The Star-Spangled Salute concert is a community favorite and truly brings a feeling of patriotism towards America and to our hometown.” The smell of barbeque wafts in the air; warm corn on the cob butter drips down your chin and is soon replaced by the cool juice of watermelon. Fourth of July picnics are a quintessential American experience. Star-Spangled Salute has become a treasured tradition for families since it first was performed at The Pavilion. This year a new tradition begins with #PavilionPicnic. Show off your love of America and build the ultimate patriotic picnic with red, white, and blue eats and sweets. At the show unpack on the hill and snap a picture. Post all the fun on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter using #PavilionPicnic and at intermission you may find your picnic featured on the big screen.

Pre-concert activities begin at 6:30 p.m. in the North and South Plazas. Guests are welcome to bring a #PavilionPicnic from home or their favorite restaurant to enjoy in their seat or on the hill. Keep in mind that beverages cannot be brought into The Pavilion. Sitting on the hill? Lawn chairs also are provided free for this event.
ARTS DAY OUT
CISD Kids Spend a Day at The Pavilion Back for the second year, Arts Day Out at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion hosted over 900 Conroe ISD students on May 9. The educational program, designed for kindergarten through 2nd grade, provides an opportunity for students to venture outside the classroom during STAAR testing on their campuses. Students from Sally K. Ride and Austin Elementary were entertained by Express Children’s Theatre as they performed their rendition of Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves. The 45 minute show had a theme of making good choices and utilized humor and hip hop music as a method of engagement. Kids were also given an opportunity to ask questions at the end to better understand how plays and performances are created. The Pavilion provided a curriculum guide to teachers in attendance to further the lessons once back in the classroom. “This program gives The Pavilion an opportunity to work toward our goal of educating and cultivating an appreciation for the performing arts. In this case, we are able to start that at a young age,” said Shannon Wilson, director of marketing and education for The Pavilion.
MAKING THE GRADE
Musical Scores Event Rewards Students book-reading objectives, raising test scores, modifying classroom behavior among others. Those students who successfully achieved their goal, or “musical scores” were rewarded with a trip to The Pavilion on May 18. Over 5,000 students from 33 schools across 13 districts attended the 2016 event. The program consisted of motivational speaker, Greg “Grego” Onofrio of Channel 39’s Newsfix, an entertaining performance from AcroDunk, complimentary lunches and t-shirts as well as words of praise and encouragement from mentors. Through generous sponsorships from Wells Fargo, Aramark, The Container Store, Anadarko Petroleum, Keith and Sandra Winters, Entergy, AON Hewitt, Fred & Sheryl Greene, Kroger, Chick-fil-a, Pepsi, The Pavilion Partners, United Airlines and NewsFix CW39, The Pavilion is able to provide a free lunch and complimentary t-shirts to all students in attendance. America’s favorite dunk team, AcroDunk provided high energy and inspirational entertainment for the students in attendance. The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s educational programs are an integral part of the Mission for the venue. The annual Musical Scores event provides an incentive for local schools to motivate students in grades six through nine to perform well academically and behaviorally. These goals might include specific academic accomplishments, improving attendance,

Located in Northwest Florida, South Walton is continually recognized as a premier destination that boasts 26 miles of sugar-white sand, turquoise water and 16 acclaimed beachside neighborhoods, each with its own personality and style. Some may wonder what a Florida destination has to do with The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. A South Walton spokesperson says that answer is simple, “South Walton is a family friendly destination full of outdoor and cultural experiences just like The Woodlands. I know The Pavilion’s audience would love the opportunity to take a much deserved vacation here.” The performing arts are as important to South Walton as they are to The Pavilion. When researching partnerships South Walton found an alignment in the Mission of The Pavilion with their destination, “We too are charged with entertaining and enriching the lives of our guests in an effort to formulate an appreciation for the arts.” South Walton boasts more than 20 local art studios and galleries as well as a local music scene that has become a focal point for the area. A hot July day isn’t the only time to visit this Florida town. The spokesperson says, “South Walton is not just a summer destination. There is so much to do beyond the beach.” During the shoulder season, September through February, the culinary, fashion and film events abound for guests to the area. She added, “There is so much more of a rich experience than just coming to lay out on the beach.” For the adventurers in the family, travelers will enjoy stand-up paddleboarding or fishing on the stunning water of the Gulf of Mexico or one of the area’s 15 rare coastal dune lakes. Additionally, South Walton’s over 200 miles of trails invite nature lovers to observe rare birds while hiking through state parks and forests. Pavilion guests will find South Walton with instant prizes and a drawing for a YOLO Bike and Paddleboard in the North Plaza during performing arts shows; however, they are really looking forward to the 21st Annual Children’s Festival in November. According to South Walton, “We are excited for that event to have a little longer to engage with attendees and to offer a really fun activity for the kids.”

The Pavilion Event Center Officially Opens Leaders from both The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and The Woodlands Township officially opened The Pavilion Event Center on Friday, April 29. Tours were offered to attendees showcasing features of each room within the facility. The opening celebration was concluded with remarks and a toast from The Pavilion Board Chairman, Joe Ash as well Township Board Chairman, Dr. Ed Robb. The 21,000 square foot multi-purpose facility provides The Pavilion with an event space that is dynamic in both structure and amenities. Two moveable “air” walls allow for the space to be divided into three separate rooms, each complete with state-of-the-art multimedia capabilities.
The House of Blues Lounge within The Pavilion Event Center is open to all concert goers. The lounge opens one hour prior to the gates of contemporary concerts and closes one hour after the show.
One of those rooms serves as the home of the House of Blues Lounge, open to all concert goers during contemporary shows. Guests can purchase food and beverages, cool off in the air conditioning and/or utilize the expansive restroom facilities before, during or after a concert. The Pavilion will also use the space for educational outreach programs and the annual Children’s Festival. The new facility will not only help provide a brick and mortar home for the ice rink during the winter months, but will bring a new incentive for artists to consider The Pavilion over neighboring venues. With the rise in popularity of artist sponsorship opportunities and exclusive fan-club experiences, many venues are expanding to include space for these events.

“Having this new event center will help us to stay competitive in the market. The Pavilion will now be able to provide more of what artists are looking for in a venue, giving us an edge and helping us continue to deliver the quality programming that has helped us remain successful over the years.” The Pavilion President and CEO, Jerry MacDonald The new event center is located on the site of the former House of Blues Hospitality Tent at The Pavilion and extends to Lake Robbins Drive. The Ovation and Encore Suites within the Event Center are available for private functions, based on availability. COMING UP Texas Music Festival Orchestra Since 1990, each summer, young professional musicians descend upon the University of Houston campus for a four-week intensive orchestral fellowship program. Each musician accepted into the program receives a fellowship that includes tuition, housing and meals. The program is a dynamic opportunity for young musicians to learn from distinguished artists from the Moores and Shepherd schools of music faculty as well as members of the Houston Symphony with a mission of preparing them for a career in music. The program culminates at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion where the Texas Music Festival Orchestra will take the Main Stage for a free concert Friday, June 24 at 8 p.m. under Guest Conductor Mei Ann Chen. The family-friendly program will include Piotr Tchaikovsky: Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture – Fantasy; Benjamin Britten: Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, Op. 34 narrated by Houston Public Media’s St. John Flynn; and Igor Stravinsky: Petrouchka (1947). Additionally, the winner of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Young Artists Competition will perform a special solo. During pre-concert activities beginning at 7:00 p.m., scouts of all ages will have the opportunity to complete their music merit badge through a variety of requirements set up throughout The Pavilion’s plaza. For the adults, enjoy a complimentary wine tasting in the Pit from Copa Di Vino winery.
DreamWorks Animation in Concert Come experience the thrilling music from Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon and more, as DreamWorks Animation’s great stories and beloved characters inspire and delight audiences of all ages. We celebrate 20+ years of visually stunning footage projected in HD onto the big screen while iconic music scores by Hans Zimmer, John Powell, Alexandre Desplat, Alan Silvestri, Danny Elfman, and others are performed live by the Houston Symphony at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 21. Kids and adults alike are encouraged to dress up as their favorite Dreamworks character to enjoy the show in style. Tickets are $20 for orchestra seating. Mezzanine and lawn seating are free courtesy of Woodforest National Bank and Anadarko Petroleum. Tickets are not required for free seating however, attendees should make plans to arrive early to ensure entry. As with all other performing arts shows, families are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy at your seat or on the lawn, but no beverages are allowed to be brought in.
Sound of Music Sing-A-Long Calling all nuns, goat herders, baronesses and brown paper packages tied up with string (or any of your favorite things) – it’s time to channel your inner Maria and join The Pavilion for a Sound of Music Sing-A-Long, August 27, 2016 at 8:00 p.m. During the interactive show, guests will experience the movie on The Pavilion’s LED screens, complete with animated lyrics displayed at the bottom. Tickets are $5 for lawn seating and covered seating is available for $10 and $15. Tickets are required for this event but, lawn chairs are complimentary. Attendees are encouraged to come dressed up in their own versions of the Von Trapps or one of your favorite things! The best costumes may be chosen to go on stage for a costume contest during the preshow entertainment.

PARTNERS PRESIDENT LETTER It’s a little hard to believe we are just months into our 2016 season and we have already had a few fantastic events which have raised money for the music and the arts in our community. Our first event was our Annual Wine Dinner and Auction which was held once again this year on the stage of The Pavilion on March 20. Co-chairs Randy Lowry and Lisa Koetting, along with their committee, made the evening into a magical event for everyone who attended. Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse catered the dinner and Flora Springs Napa Valley Family Estate was the featured winery. A special vocal and theatrical performance was given by one of our past scholarship recipients, Jonathan Lammy, who is currently attending Sam Houston State University for musical theatre. All the funds raised at this event benefit the Partners Fine Arts Scholarships which are awarded to local area students who are attending college to pursue a degree in fine arts. I would like to extend a special thank you to all the Partners who volunteered for the Waterway Arts Festival in April. We are proud to be one of five charity partners for this event each year in The Woodlands. The three day festival was a huge success with over 19,000 patrons attending this year. I was thrilled to see all of your smiling faces as you checked-in at the volunteer tent. Thank you for your continued support of the arts in our community. Lastly, in the next few months you will begin to hear about our Pre-Concert Fundraiser which benefits the many education programs held at The Pavilion such as Arts Day Out, Musical Scores and The Children’s Festival. We are working to secure a date for this exciting event. FUNDING THE FUTURE OF ART
The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s Mission provides an opportunity to support young artists as they pursue college degrees in the arts through The Pavilion Partners Fine Arts Scholarship program. Scholarships are awarded annually to high school seniors based on talent and academic performance within the following five disciplines: dance, instrumental music, theatre arts, visual/graphic arts and vocal music. Scholarship funds are raised in part by Pavilion Partners throughout the year and specifically through the annual Wine Dinner and Auction. Co-chair for the scholarship committee, Lisa Koetting says, “Fundraising for the scholarship program has been extremely successful the last few years thanks to the collaborative efforts of the committee and Pavilion staff.” The rigorous application process consists of student response essays, transcript and test score evaluation as well as a teacher or instructor recommendation letter. Committee members score the completed application which contributes to 20 percent of the student’s overall score. In 2016, The Pavilion Partners received a record 97 applications for new scholarships. Each student applicant is also required to audition in their respective discipline. Industry professionals, who volunteer their time, judge the auditions. Koetting says, “The final score is heavily weighted on the auditions as it contributes to 80 percent of the final score.” From there, students are awarded scholarship amounts based on their final scores. This year, Partners were able to award 33 new scholarships ranging from $7,500 to $2,500. The scholarship recipients represent fourteen high schools across eight school districts. New recipients were honored during a ceremony on April 25. Students are able to apply for a renewal scholarship for up to four years as long as they are in good standing with their school and majoring in a fine arts discipline. Since 1999, The Pavilion Partners has awarded over $1.06 million to 776 students. Koetting concluded, “Pursuing a career in fine arts can be daunting because you’re not always guaranteed a high paying job immediately out of school. THE BEST SEATS IN THE HOUSE Pavilion Partners and Wine Dinner co-chairs, Randy Lowry and Lisa Koetting were celebrated at the first performing arts show on April 29 after a successful Wine Dinner in March. Leslie Williams, volunteer and special events coordinator for The Pavilion said, “We selected Randy and Lisa to sit at the Tommy Bahama table as a thank you for their hard work and dedication to Wine Dinner. With their leadership, Partners reached the $1 million milestone for fine arts scholarships.” Lowry retired as co-chair of the Wine Dinner after the 2016 event. Koetting will continue to co-chair the event and welcomes new co-chair Chrystal Tamillo to the helm. All concert goers are encouraged to stop by the Tommy Bahama booth in the North Plaza at performing arts shows to register to win a chance to sit in the special seating. Winners receive great seats, VIP parking and a four course catered meal at their table from Tommy Bahama at a selected performing arts show.

The Pavilion Launches New Website Have you seen the new look of The Pavilion’s website? Launched in May, the website has a new look and is more intuitive so guests can find the things they need even faster. The biggest change and the primary reason for the upgrade is the new design is responsive and formatted to fit all mobile formats clearly and legibly. According to ComScore, in 2015, for the first time in history, mobile-only internet users exceeded desktop-only users in the United States. With so many strictly utilizing mobile devices to access information from websites, it was imperative for The Pavilion to make a change. Sarah Stephan, social media and digital marketing coordinator for The Pavilion said, “We aimed at making the website more of a resource center rather than just blanket information. We really wanted the new site to be a tool for people to engage with The Pavilion.” Guests to the website will notice top information quickly with the new homepage bubbles featuring upcoming shows and important news. Stephan added, “It’s my favorite feature of the new website. We are able to showcase the information guests want to know most across all platforms in a highly visible way.”

New Ticket Policy Makes for Convenient Entries Have tickets to a show at The Pavilion this season? Be sure to understand the new ticket policy so you will make it in the gates. As of the 2016 season, print at home tickets will no longer be accepted at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. The new policy is for the protection of concert goers. Jerry MacDonald, president and CEO of The Pavilion said, “It’s easy for a person to manipulate a PDF print at home ticket and sell the same ticket to multiple people. The first one would get in, but the rest would be out of luck.” Effective now, The Pavilion will accept three forms of ticket entry to concerts/performances:
Mobile entry with a Ticketmaster provided QR code
By providing the credit card the tickets were bought with or;
Physical hard tickets from Ticketmaster or The Pavilion’s box office
Ticketmaster is The Pavilion’s official ticketing source. The Pavilion does not endorse or recommend any other ticketing source for Pavilion events. Please use caution when purchasing tickets from any website other than www.ticketmaster.com for events held at The Pavilion. The only exception is when purchasing tickets through an official artist fan club website, Groupon or Goldstar. Please also note previously utilized Ticketmaster outlets are in the process of being phased out. Effective immediately outlets in H-E-B and Fiesta are closed. Wal-Mart locations will be open through November 30. Guests who have “In Store Pick-up” as their delivery method will be able to pick up their tickets at the Box Office or at a Wal-Mart location. Keep in mind; all concert ticket holders have access to the newly constructed House of Blues Lounge in The Pavilion Event Center. The Lounge opens an hour before the gates and closes an hour after the show concludes. Concert goers can find refuge from the heat, a refreshing beverage or a dinner menu with offerings to please everyone. BONUS TIP! Those ticket holders who have been through security and are already in the House of Blues Lounge will be able to go straight into The Pavilion when gates open. This is specifically beneficial for those with a lawn ticket as they will avoid the line and have first choice of their spot on the hill.
