We were proud to host sold out shows for the Houston Symphony’s Star Wars & More: A John Williams Tribute, Weezer and Twenty One Pilots. We are especially delighted to be ranked number 1 in outdoor amphitheater ticket sales in the world through June 30th!

Season tickets will go on sale next month for our 28th Season. We are excited about the renovation to our exclusive VIP Club, a benefit of Season Seat Subscribers. The new VIP Club will be a two story top notch facility with expanded patio seating upstairs. Now, more than ever, is the right time to become a Pavilion Season Seat Subscriber. As you will read in this issue, The Pavilion was proud to bring back Chamberfest this summer for its fifth year. This program directly supports our Mission of providing training and performance opportunities for young artists. I want to say goodbye and thank you to Christine Scully who is retiring and has been my Director of Development for the past 13 years. Christine has been an amazing employee and will be missed. There are more events to come in our 27th season as found in this issue of Center Stage. Come out, bring the family and enjoy this world class venue. Calling all nuns, goat herders, baronesses and brown paper packages tied up with string (or any of your favorite things) – it’s time to channel your inner Maria and join The Pavilion for a Sound of Music Sing-A-Long, August 27, 2016 at 8:00 p.m. At this unique and interactive show, guests will experience the movie on The Pavilion’s big screens, complete with animated lyrics displayed at the bottom. Tickets are $5 for lawn seating and covered seating is available for $10 and $15. Tickets are required for this event, but lawn chairs are complimentary. Attendees are encouraged to come dressed up in your own versions of the Von Trapps or one of your favorite things! The best costumes may be chosen to go on stage for a costume contest during the pre-show entertainment. Pack a picnic and make it a night of family fun on the lawn!

HOUSTON SYMPHONY CONDUCTOR POPS INTO HOUSTON Getting to know Steven Reineke, Principal Pops Conductor Designate Steven Reineke’s passion for music began at a young age in Tipp City, Ohio, a small town north of Dayton. “My father would play his guitar and sing me to sleep when I was a child,” he said. “As a teenager, I taught myself how to play the piano and then began composing and arranging music.” Reineke feels like the profession chose him as he was lucky enough to be born with an innate talent for music. Reineke added a fourth orchestra to his plate after accepting the position of Principal Pops Conductor Designate for the Houston Symphony in 2015. He also is the Music Director of The New York Pops at Carnegie Hall, Principal Pops Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Principal Pops Conductor of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. As a pops conductor, Reineke keeps abreast of what is happening musically and culturally in our society to bring to his audience. “I believe the symphony orchestra still has a very relevant place in pop culture, as long as we’re programming compelling and interesting pieces for every possible demographic that we can reach,” he stated. Reineke’s boundless enthusiasm and exceptional artistry have made him one of the nation’s most sought-after pops conductors and is well-known for his innovative composing and arranging. “Steven is always looking for the next big thing with the highest artistic quality,” said Lesley Sabol, director of popular programming for the Houston Symphony. “He literally

The Houston Symphony Celebrates Hispanic Heritage September 15
Bridging the gulf between rock n’ roll and classical music, the Houston Symphony performs The Music Of The Rolling Stones at The Pavilion on Friday, September 2 at 8 p.m. Conductor/arranger Brent Havens takes the podium to present Windborne’s The Music Of The Rolling Stones, a program he scored to extend the listening experience of The Rolling Stones’ exceptional tunes. Performed by an orchestra and amplified with a full rock band and vocals, Havens and his ensemble capture The Rolling Stones’ distinct sound while presenting some familiar and lots of new musical colors.
The Houston Symphony heats up the stage at The Pavilion with music celebrating Hispanic Heritage month September 15 at 8 p.m. Join the Symphony’s Colombia-born, Vienna-trained Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada for a festive evening of orchestral masterpieces including Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. This classical concert also features piano jazz works to be played by Grammy Award® winning pianist and composer from the Dominican Republic, Michel Camilo.
Tickets are $20 for orchestra seating. Mezzanine and lawn seating are free courtesy of Huntsman. Tickets are not required for free seating. Make it a family night! Pack a picnic and enjoy the tunes from the Main Stage. Pre-concert activities begin at 7 p.m. and include the ever popular Instrument Petting Zoo and a Pavilion Partners’ arts & craft project.

Hello Partners, Each year the Montgomery County Women’s Council of Organizations (MCWCO) recognizes the many accomplished women in our community who have given to local charitable organizations by volunteering their time and talents. This year, the Pavilion Partners were delighted to nominate Judith Bartok as our 2016 Woman of Distinction. Judith holds a position on our Board, she is the chair of our craft committee and is active on the scholarship and pre-concert committees. I was honored to attend the luncheon held at the Waterway Marriott, along with many other Partners and Pavilion staff, to show our support for her. Congratulations, Judith! We have many very exciting performing arts events still to come this season. The mystical gates open at 6 p.m. and that’s when the magic promises to begin. The first 100 costumed children to checkin at Hocus Pocus Central in the North Plaza will get the chance to march in the Goblin Parade. Spellbinding crafts, otherworldly prizes, and much more guarantee a ghoulishly good time!

Cue the flashlights and scary stories! The Pavilion wants to hear your ghostliest Halloween tale for the 6th Annual Hocus Pocus Pops “Spooktacular” Essay Contest. All students in kindergarten – 12th grade are welcome to participate. Prizes include gift cards, VIP tickets to the Houston Symphony’s Hocus Pocus Pops and your story published in a newspaper! Get your goblin juices flowing – entries are due to The Pavilion by September 1st.
Judith Bartok Named Woman of Distinction
Judith Bartok, Pavilion Partners Board of Directors member since 2012 and head of the Pre-Concert Activities committee, was honored as this year’s Woman of Distinction. Bartok’s hard work, dedication and leadership have shined through each of her planned pre-concert crafts for children, confirming she is the Partners’ 2016 Woman of Distinction.

TRAINING TOMORROW’S SYMPHONY STARS 5th Annual Chamberfest held in June By Maddie Owen The Woodlands Chamberfest returned to The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion for a fifth year of lessons from notable Juilliard alumni. Twenty-nine students attended the four-day program from June 12 to June 16. The program is designed for junior high through high school aged students and supports The Pavilion’s Mission of providing training and performance opportunities for young artists. Chamberfest expands the students’ knowledge and improves their skills within chamber music. The Woodlands Chamberfest was started by The Woodlands College Park alumnus, Marie Daniels in 2012 in the living room of her parents’ home and has since taken place at The Pavilion. Daniels hopes to teach young students about necessary communication, collaboration and leadership skills through chamber music.

The students spent the four days rehearsing for a final performance in which they performed three pieces of their choice on June 16, for an audience in The Pavilion Event Center’s Encore Suite.

HOMETOWN STUDENT PLAYS ON THE PAVILION STAGE Since 1990, each summer, young professional musicians descend upon the University of Houston campus for a four-week intensive orchestral fellowship program. Each of the 100 musicians accepted into the program receive a fellowship that includes tuition, housing and meals. The program is a dynamic opportunity for young musicians to learn from distinguished artists from the Moores and Shepherd schools of music faculty as well as members of the Houston Symphony with a mission of preparing them for a career in music. The program culminated at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion for a free concert June 24 where the Texas Music Festival Orchestra took the Main Stage and for one fellow, made a childhood dream come true. Scott Leger, a French horn player from The Woodlands developed a love for the arts by watching the Houston Symphony and the Texas Music Festival Orchestra perform as a child. “The Pavilion has been in my musical life since I began playing my instrument in the 4th grade,” Legar stated. “And now, I have been given the opportunity to actually perform on the stage I watched for so many years.” A recent summa cum laude graduate from Southern Methodist University, Leger majored in Music Education and Music Performance and will continue his education this fall at the Yale School of Music. The Pavilion is very proud to be a catalyst to enhance an appreciation for the arts and provide performance opportunities for young artists.
