SENIOR HOMESTEAD CAMP
2-6 MARCH 2025
2-6 MARCH 2025
February 2025
Dear Student and Parents/Guardians,
The Adelaide Arts Camp will take place from Sunday 2 March to Thursday 6 March 2025.
You will be attending the Adelaide Arts Camp, the program for which is detailed below. Our aims are to develop your cultural, historic and current understanding of the life of this great festival city, along with encouraging greater independence and confidence when travelling within an unfamiliar city environment. As part of this cultural experience, we will undertake a series of creative activities, reporting on our cultural visits and responding personally. We will be exploring new ways of seeing cultural experiences, this may include artworks that display mature themes. It is also important to note that you will be expected to participate fully in all events, which, given the nature of the Arts, can be challenging.
The camp experiences will be varied: the group will visit a range of visual arts exhibitions and museums, attend film and theatre performances as well as visiting other places of interest. Performances have been booked and program notes for these, as well as descriptions of a range of exhibitions, will be provided where possible. Please refer to the camp program at the end of this booklet for more details.
Parents/Guardians, please respond to the Operoo eForm and ensure that your child’s medical information is up to date.
In this booklet you will find further information regarding the camp so please read through this carefully.
If there are any further queries you may have in relation to this camp, please do not hesitate to contact me. We look forward to a fun and rewarding week!
Yours sincerely,
Ms Emma Cleine
Adelaide Arts Camp Coordinator
Our camp is being held on Kaurna land. We pay respects to the Traditional Owners, Kaurna Elders, past and present. We acknowledge that the Kaurna people have cared for the land for tens of thousands of years. We are grateful to be visiting their land and will tread lightly.
Homestead Week Camp is a compulsory part of the school curriculum and all students are expected to participate. Bookings and arrangements are made on this expectation.
In the event that a student withdraws from the camp due to medical reasons, the school requires prior written notice accompanied by a valid medical certificate. In such cases, families will be responsible for all non-refundable costs incurred, including but not limited to flights, accommodation, and other pre-paid expenses.
For cancellations due to a change of mind or any non-medical reasons, families will be charged the full camp fee.
In keeping with the school’s “SunSmart” approach to outdoor activities, students are required to bring sunscreen, a protective hat (with a wide brim) and to wear tops which adequately cover the skin of the shoulders and back. In the event of swimming activities, students will need “rashies” or t-shirts. Sunscreen is an additional protection - it does not take the place of clothing or shade.
On Camp, we request that parents/students avoid bringing food products that contain nuts of any kind. In order to minimise the risk to students with severe allergies.
The school cannot guarantee that the camp environment will be 100% allergen free, hence students with allergies need to remain vigilant in their decisions around any food that they ingest.
In the event of an emergency, or if you need to urgently contact your child, please do not ring the camp (or your child) directly but rather contact the school during office hours on (03) 5971 6100 or contact after hours on mobile 0482 888 022
To enable staff to fulfil their duty of care to students, we need accurate and up-to-date information about medical and personal issues for all students. Please respond to the Operoo eForm and ensure that your child’s medical information is up to date. Any last-minute changes should be communicated directly to the leader of the camp as well as updated on Operoo. We do rely on this information, and parents do have a duty of disclosure, to ensure all relevant information is known.
Confidential medical and other sensitive information collected and used for the running of these camps will be handled in line with the School’s Privacy Policy.
Where a student does need to be sent home, for medical, personal, or discipline reasons, they will need to be collected from the camp by their parent/guardian (at their own expense) - they cannot travel unaccompanied. In all cases, arrangements must be made with school and special arrangements may need to be in place for remote camps, ie. 3 or more hours from school.
We will modify our program based on weather forecasts - we will be in contact with Woodleigh School to review the week’s weather as it unfolds. In the event of a day being forecast to be Extreme (under the CFA Fire Danger Rating system) the program will be modified at the least, to ensure safety in the heat, and evacuation plans in readiness. In the event of a day being forecast to be Code Red (Catastrophic), the program will be cancelled in advance and students evacuated the day before. The School will use SMS and email to communicate with parents in such cases.
Sunday 2 March to Thursday 6 March 2025.
Any students taking medication on camp will need to provide all medication (in original packaging) to school by no later than Tuesday 18 February 2025. You can drop off the medication to reception anytime between 8am-4.30pm. Before handing in your child's medication, you are required to answer all the questions within the Operoo e-Form.
Costs directly associated with the camp (airfare, admissions, accommodation, breakfast, lunch and some dinners) will be approximately $1,295, which will be charged to student accounts.
You will need to bring extra money for your own expenses and some dinners throughout the week. As part of this, you need to budget for the cost of buses and trams. You are urged to consider ways of economising, such as taking a packed lunch each day, provided by our accommodation, or pooling money to buy bulk drinks/snacks from supermarkets in Adelaide. However, time constraints will mean that the group needs to budget for some evening meals. A cooked breakfast and fruit will be provided each morning.
Departure: The group will depart on Sunday on Qantas Flight QF0683 (flight time 12.25pm; arrives in Adelaide at 1.20pm). Students are required to meet at the airport by 10.30am. We must all check in at the same time as we are travelling as a group.
Return: We will return on Thursday on Jetstar Flight JQ0775 (departs Adelaide at 1:40pm, arrives in Melbourne at 3.30pm); students will be dismissed into the care of a parent/guardian at the baggage claim area. If students are not being collected by a parent or guardian, could this please be noted on the permission slip, along with a note about the arrangements made.
It is also essential that students are aware that all airlines require all passengers to have official photo ID. Your Learners/Driver’s License card is recommended as proof of identity. The name on the ID must be identical to the name on the flight list. (We are not able to vouch for students and students may be unable to board the plane without official photo ID).
Students will need to buy a Metro card (the SA version of Myki) - $5 card purchase + travel costs - in the city (unfortunately only SA students are eligible for the Student Concession card, so you will need to buy an Adult Metro card and pay adult prices to travel. Mostly we will walk to venues, but we do travel to and from the airport.
What you need to show to staff before we go:
• Your photo ID.
• That you have a phone.
In Adelaide, we will stay at the Adelaide Central Youth Hostel, at 135 Waymouth Street, Adelaide. Students will sleep in dormitory style co-ed rooms of 4-6 beds with shared hostel facilities. The YHA also has several Common Rooms, cooking facilities and a dining room. A continental breakfast will be supplied daily. Clothes washing and drying facilities are also available.
Food Handling – relevant to our meal at the YHA
Maintaining a high level of food handling hygiene is important for health reasons– this is particularly important on a school camp. Please note the following;
• You must ensure that care is taken when transporting and storing food – be aware of any temperature requirements.
• Your hands need to be washed before and after handling food.
• Any meat products that are to be cooked must be cooked sufficiently so that food poisoning does not occur.
• You should tie back hair, wear limited jewellery and clean clothes when food handling.
• Do not share unwashed plates, cups, bowls, cutlery, etc.
Things you should bring to Adelaide:
• Official Photo ID for airport checks.
• Mobile phone + charger or Phone card.
• Towel.
• Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, tops with sleeves: BE SUNSMART – this is your responsibility.
• Umbrella (If there’s rain forecast!) or Waterproof jacket (usually too hot for a jacket!).
• Good walking shoes.
• Respectable clothing – clothing needs to be in line with Senior Homestead Dress Guidelines.
• Smart casual clothes for evening.
• Toiletries.
• Cameras / Film.
• Water bottle.
• Snacks.
• Students must bring at least one outfit suitable for more formal venues. For example, you should have a pair of trousers, not jeans, and a shirt with a collar. Shorts, singlets, micro skirts, skimpy tops and slides would be inappropriate. At other times students need to wear clothes in keeping with the Senior Homestead Dress and Appearance Guidelines. There is walking involved, so sturdy shoes and a sun hat are required.
Please Note:
Sheets and bedding ARE provided. Avoid carrying too much as you will personally need to carry your bag from the airport to the YHA and on the return journey.
We will be attending a variety of galleries, workshops and performances. Students will need to have appropriate clothing to attend performances at the Adelaide Festival Centre and theatre performances, as well as appropriately SunSmart clothing for daytime activitiesincluding walking, where sturdy shoes are highly recommended.
Valuables or any articles that you don't want to lose or break, speakers, electronic devices (unless they are relevant to your creative project).
A reminder that the Woodleigh School Mobile Phone Policy will be in effect throughout the week.
Mobile phones are ONLY to be used for contacting staff/other students on THIS camp. They are NOT to be used for any other purpose and will be collected at venues should this be necessary. All care will be taken, however no responsibility will be accepted for confiscated phones. MOBILE PHONES MUST BE SWITCHED OFF AT VENUES.
There are elements of risk involved in this city-based camp, where students will attend an arts festival, stay in a youth hostel, and use public transport to move around the city. While safety ratios and requirements will be adhered to, we believe it is important to make you aware of potential risks. These risks include but are not limited to:
• Emotional or social challenges during participation in arts-based workshops, which may explore sensitive topics, mature themes or involve personal expression.
• Risks associated with shared accommodation at the youth hostel, including interactions with members of the public.
• Safety risks when navigating city environments, including pedestrian hazards and potential encounters with strangers.
• Risks associated with public transportation, including crowding, delays, or the possibility of becoming separated from the group.
• Fatigue due to a busy schedule and extensive time spent in the city environment.
• Complications arising from a pre-existing medical or mental health condition.
To mitigate these risks, we will:
• Ensure all arts workshops are supervised by trained staff who can provide emotional and social support as needed.
• Provide guidance and support for students before and after workshops, with staff available for discussions or assistance.
• Arrange youth hostel accommodation with an emphasis on safety and protocols to limit interaction with the public, along with appropriate adult supervision.
• Conduct safety briefings on city awareness and navigating public transportation, including group management practices to minimise the risk of students becoming separated.
• Monitor students’ well-being throughout the camp and offer rest periods to prevent fatigue.
• Check student medical and mental health records prior to the camp and ask parents to update information on Operoo. Parents will be contacted prior to camp if there are any questions or concerns.
• As a Senior Student at Woodleigh School participating in the Homestead Camps Program, there is a high level of responsibility and expectation with respect to behaviour. All normal school policies apply, in particular:
• Involvement with sex, drugs, smoking, vaping or alcohol is prohibited.
• A preparedness to participate wherever appropriate.
• Safety of all participants is paramount.
Infringement of these policies may result in the student being sent home, at your own expense.
• Particular adherence to the advice of staff is required. This is especially important in relation to safety and accommodation security.
• Meeting times must be strictly observed. (Students must meet staff at each venue before the scheduled meeting time.)
• During set periods of unsupervised time, you must remain in a group of 4 (inform staff of the members of your group).
• It is courteous to be respectful and positive at all events, even those you personally find less interesting. A good night’s sleep will be essential - being tired will not only affect you but also others on camp.
• When travelling to and from venues, you must be in groups of at least 4.
• Each student must have their program, map, travel pass, phone card/mobile phone (if possible), and card with emergency contacts with them at all times.
• The safety of all participants is paramount.
• Never leave the accommodation/venue without the permission of a staff member.
• Each student is responsible for the immediate environment and must keep it tidy and not damage any of the surroundings. This includes keeping noise to a minimum.
• No-one is to enter anyone else's bedroom before breakfast or after dark. You will only enter someone else's bedroom/if the people in that group are there, invite you in and you have obtained permission from a staff member.
Students will be rostered into groups to help with organisation which will include such things as setting out breakfast, lunch and washing up. There are also room and cleaning duties which will be performed every day during the camp along with maintaining individual equipment. Students will have some free time to rest, read and socialise in the lounge. We encourage every student to bring a board game or cards, etc. to play with their peers during these down times.
Some students may wish to go to sleep earlier, we are living in a close group with peers and staff. Respecting each other’s privacy and being quiet is of the upmost importance.
Whilst in Adelaide we will be using the public transport system for all travel. Staff will be in attendance at our accommodation, at each of the performance and exhibition venues, and during dinner. However, as an important aspect of the camp is to encourage independence, there will be times when students will be unsupervised. This will occur essentially as students travel from venue to venue but also at other times as indicated by the program. You may use this time to visit other sites of interest. You will be given explicit directions and emergency procedures:
• Carry a device with access to TEAMs.
• Be in groups of at least four people during unsupervised time (give names of group to staff before departure).
• Have own mobile charged and on (It is essential that you have data on your phone to access the TEAMs messenger service for communication).
• Stay within designated area.
• Report by designated time.
