This year has marked milestone anniversaries for pioneering climate science research projects around the globe. Our experts were recognized with prestigious awards and appointments to influential policy boards. To translate our science into action, we helped craft legislation; co-developed risk assessments with under-resourced communities, key national governments, and security experts; and raised public awareness through thousands of news stories. We also co-sponsored an art exhibition comprised entirely of Woodwellaffiliated artists on Arctic flux due to climate change.

With each year, our mission to put the brakes on climate change becomes more urgent. And with each year, we achieve greater influence and impact.

Your support plays a critical role in all we do. Together, we are harnessing natural climate solutions to create a healthier world. Thank you.

All the best,

TOGETHER WE

» Dr. Alex Naegele from the Risk team joined policy experts from the Center for Climate and Security to present a briefing for US Congressional staffers on climate security risks in Iran and Türkiye.

» Woodwell Climate and the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development (MEDD) of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) jointly released a new report on climate risk and resilience at COP28. Following our deep engagement with MEDD, Dr. Glenn Bush was appointed as a special adviser to the DRC President’s Climate Envoy.

Dave McGlinchey and the Government Relations team worked with U.S. Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) to craft bipartisan, bicameral legislation that would add natural climate solutions to the list of high priority research and extension topics for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

TOGETHER

WE

Earned recognition and support for advancing climate justice.

» Dr. Nigel Golden was awarded a grant from the Switzer Foundation to lead a transparent, community-driven initiative that will identify priorities, set goals, and provide recommendations for seamlessly integrating climate justice into all aspects of Woodwell Climate’s work.

Permafrost Pathways was cited in the White House’s National Strategy for the Arctic Region as a key collaborator for engaging Indigenous Knowledge systems and co-producing scientific research.

A $5m grant and fifteen Google.org Fellows supported efforts to enhance the Permafrost Discovery Gateway to meet the information needs of communities and decision makers facing permafrost thaw issues.

TOGETHER

WE

Reached major milestones representing long-term commitment to collaboration and scientific discovery.

Three projects at Woodwell Climate celebrated their 20th anniversary ‹‹ Tanguro Field Station has become an important hub for both research and education around tropical agriculture and tropical forests. Along with collaborators from IPAM Amazônia, Dr. Ludmila Rattis and other members of the Tropics team organized a science symposium in Brasília, Brazil, to celebrate and present research results from the last 20 years.

The TIDE project uses experimental ecology to understand the effects of fertilizer pollution and altered food webs on saltmarsh ecosystems. Led by Dr. Linda Deegan, it is the only experiment in the world to maintain a long-term, landscape-level fertilization manipulation.

Arctic Great Rivers Observatory (ArcticGRO) provides essential data about the biogeochemistry and discharge of the largest Arctic rivers, helping us understand a rapidly changing Arctic.

TOGETHER WE Shared captivating visuals inspired by our research with thousands in the science community and beyond.

« Our cartographers won awards recognizing their excellence in mapmaking. Greg Fiske earned two awards at the Esri User Conference for a detailed topographical map of Alaska, and Christina Shintani won the Avenza map contest for a map showcasing Permafrost Pathways’ Arctic carbon monitoring network.

Woodwell Climate partnered with Highfield Hall and Gardens in Falmouth, MA to present In Flux: Perspectives on Arctic Change, an exhibition showing artworks inspired by our research. Featured artists included our Art-Science Fellows, as well as members of our staff and Board of Directors.

Our science reached wide audiences online—a story with seven maps and graphs showing how drought in Panama is disrupting global shipping continues to be our most popular story months after publishing. Maps also always stand out on our social media, reaching new audiences and earning high rates of engagement.

Donors

We are deeply grateful to the individuals, foundations, and companies listed on the following pages who supported Woodwell Climate Research Center with gifts, new pledges, and pledge payments during the Center’s fiscal year July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024. We are committed to accurately listing every gift. If we have made an error or if you have a question about your gift listing, please contact Leah George at lgeorge@woodwellclimate.org or 508-444-1845.

“Like most folks, we want our bequest to do as much good as possible. But how to choose, when there is so much need? After much thought, we decided to support climate change because it seems to underlie everything else: if we don’t have a livable planet, all other issues are a lost cause.

When we learned about Woodwell Climate Research Center, we felt we had found a perfect organization to support. Not only does Woodwell Climate do cutting-edge research, its scientists are also educating the public and influencing policymakers, with a reach that is both national and global. Our bequest, though modest, can really make a difference at Woodwell Climate. As an added benefit, we feel acknowledged and appreciated in a way you might not with a larger organization.”
