REMEDY 2021

Susan Breen Remedy 2021 at Woodward Gallery February - April 2021

Woodward Gallery Presents

Susan Breen: Remedy 2021 February to April 2021 Susan Breen Remedy explores our present sense of social, psychological, and physical maladies by imagining the transformation of various ‘ailments,’ to a contemporary visual representation of what might, in theory, relieve that state of being. Remedy expresses possibility and hope where neither comes too freely. In her remarkable series of original oil paintings, Breen addresses the current notion of affliction as simply a kind of potential existing in a latent, raw state. The patterned and abstract restorative power of Breen’s stunning palette and conceptual intuitiveness is rendered with force and great beauty. The majority of Breen’s compositions are grounded in symmetry, having derived broadly from Mandalic symbology. Breen’s interests in botany, physics, Eastern philosophy and medicine complicate notions of easy, logical order and balance. This combination has helped Breen’s work to possess a seeming openness of form, an absolute rigor in execution, and a true awareness of our universal need to heal.

“Each piece in my series, Remedy, was created in response to the theoretical question. “If paintings could help us work through any number of specific psychological, emotional or spiritual difficulties we face as human beings, what might those paintings look like?” For this series, I considered various “ailments”—heartache, vulnerability, grief, political disillusionment, anxiety, and jealousy, among others—and painted an imagined and abstract compositional representation of both the ailment and the “remedy”—that is, what might in theory alter or relieve that state of being.”

For Despair, 2007 Oil on wood 12 x 12 inches; 30.5 x 30.5 cm Signed, dated, titled on verso

To Inquire About this Artist, contact us at Art@woodwardgallery.net

“When I began painting For Despair, I considered how isolating it can feel, and how challenging it can be to reach people, or be reached, while experiencing a state of hopelessness, those darkest nights. I knew that I initially wanted to set up a pictorial dichotomy—dark and light set at an angle, some clear and seemingly impenetrable demarcation. Then I wanted to try to counter it, to break through that compositional dividing line, so that the lighter areas could contain part of the darkness, and the darkness could reflect some potential for light. The totality of any life holds all of these shades of experience. There is no shadow without light. This painting speaks to the idea that even in the darkest times, however difficult it may be to see it—beauty and hope and promise are always present, and can grow if supported and given a chance.”

For Forgiveness, 2008 Oil on wood panel 40 x 36 inches; 101.6 x 91.4 cm Signed, dated, titled on verso

To Inquire About this Artist, contact us at Art@woodwardgallery.net

While working on For Forgiveness, I mediated on the experience of allowing for forgiveness in a universal sense, with the intention of opening up to a present free from the burden of both our individual and shared histories. The scale was important to me, I wanted it to really resonate physically on a human scale. I think forgiveness is at times hard for people, but when possible, can open up our lives to future possibility. It is a process and a challenge, but is also one of the most generous acts we can engage in--I hoped to convey the totality of that in the piece. The central shape is a focal point of meditation, and the surrounding rays represent conduits through which someone could both release the past and fill up again for the present and future. Almost like breath.

For Blind Rage, 2008 Oil on wood 12 x 12 inches; 30.5 x 30.5 cm Signed, dated, titled on verso

To Inquire About this Artist, contact us at Art@woodwardgallery.net

“My painting For Blind Rage is a bit of an enigma. That red Gordian knot of rage, set against a backdrop of ordered and repeated lines. These elements, studies in contrast, serve to represent illogic/logic, violence/ non-violence, and order/disorder. The juxtaposition is intended to be stark. Blind rage is unpredictable, potentially dangerous. To alleviate its threat a certain cognitive restructuring, to untangle the uncontrolled limbic rage response, must take place. This painting represents a dichotomy has a solid and predictable ground, over which that knot of red hovers, with a hint that it can dissipate, dissolve, untangle or wash away, over time with the right tools.”

For Hypochondria, 2008 Oil on wood 12 x 12 inches; 30.5 x 30.5 cm Signed, dated, titled on verso

To Inquire About this Artist, contact us at Art@woodwardgallery.net

“I hoped that the painting titled For Hypochondria could serve as an object to reflect on that could in theory help calm the mind and allow for stress and anxiety to lessen. Researchers have found that viewing (and making) art can reduce anxiety and depression for many. Like all anxiety disorders, hypochondria can become quite debilitating for those who suffer from it, and the associated heightened state of worry can wear on one’s physical health as well. The painting is meant to be both dynamic and soothing—the palette was chosen with this in mind—and as with much of my work, suggest some sense of movement—in this case, rising and falling, spinning and floating, like both water and air. Still, with all that is taking place within the composition, it is my hope that settling in with the piece can be calming and grounding.”

For Hallucinations, 2008 Oil on paper 18 x 18 inches; 45.7 x 45.7 cm Framed: 27 x 25 inches; 68.6 x 63.5 cm Signed, dated, titled on verso

To Inquire About this Artist, contact us at Art@woodwardgallery.net

While working on For Hallucinations I was thinking in part of the way we can look at the sky, as we did as children, and feel joy in seeing shapes take form. Depending upon one’s mood and state of mind, there is a full spectrum of possibilities. This lead me to think about how our attitudes can dictate in some sense what we both see and experience in our lives, the inspirational highs and lows. There have been times in the past while preparing for shows when I would sleep very little over the course of that last week or two; that sleep deprivation would alter my visual sense, and sometimes open up my creativity in ways that was very freeing, but depending on how far I pushed it, it could be disorienting and sometimes frightening. So I mediated on a full range of emotions one might feel when hallucinating, whatever the cause, and tried to envision a pictorial space that could alleviate any negative or fearful aspect, and instead, in some transformative way approximate gazing at some colorful and kaleidoscopic sky and all its possibilities. Both as a metaphor for creativity and for the filter we can look at our world through.

For Jealousy, 2008 Oil on wood 12 x 12 inches; 30.5 x 30.5 cm Signed, dated, titled on verso

To Inquire About this Artist, contact us at Art@woodwardgallery.net

“For Jealousy is meant to serve as a visual metaphoric antidote for any absence or general feeling of lacking, which can provoke envy. Jealousy is a common human trait that can be countered with gratitude, focusing on both the experiential, and on what one does have beyond material possession, and appreciating it fully. The painting’s palette plays off of, and flips the meaning of the phrase “green with envy,” celebrating the inherent beauty of the color. The shift from the green grey to a band of orange and then back again, along with the black leaf-like shapes floating over the left side of the painting’s surface but absent from the right, are intended to represent a transformation, an alleviation or shift in feeling. The painting is itself a tangible object of desire for the viewer to hold in their gaze, to experience. The experience of looking at art is its own form of sustenance, one that can fill the heart, soul, and mind.”

Drifting (Purpose in Mind), 2007 Oil on wood 12 x 12 inches; 30.5 x 30.5 cm Signed, dated, titled on verso

To Inquire About this Artist, contact us at Art@woodwardgallery.net

“Drifting (Purpose in Mind) is really about the creative process. It is about finding inspiration. That spark can come unexpectedly, or be hard wrought. Either way, it is a constant in one’s artistic life.”

“The majority of the paintings’ compositions are grounded in symmetry, having derived formally from Mandalic symbology and intention. The varied symmetrical structures serve as iconic and organically wrought architecture, open to, and allowing for, the viewer to experience their own metaphoric, or symbolic or psychological transformation through the painted forms and palette.”

For Anger, 2008 Oil on wood 14 x 11.5 inches; 35.6 x 29.2 cm Signed, dated, titled on verso

To Inquire About this Artist, contact us at Art@woodwardgallery.net

“For Anger was an inspired piece, painted in a moment of intense anger. It was cathartic. Unlike blind rage, anger can at times be a useful motivator, and when channeled the right way, righteous anger can activate real change in one’s life (and society at large). Anger can also mask pain. The black and white circular shape, its rays and those around it, create an illusion that radiates both outward and inward. Viewers can set their breath to it. I’ve painted it in a cerebral—almost cloud-like—space and placed it just above those red forms. It is meant to represent the transformation of an intense emotion, into some potential higher purpose.”

For Shortness of Breath, 2007 Oil on wood panel 15 x 14 inches; 38.1 x 35.6 cm Signed, dated, titled on verso

To Inquire About this Artist, contact us at Art@woodwardgallery.net

For Those in Need of Courage, 2008 Oil on wood 40 x 36 inches; 101.6 x 91.4 cm Signed, dated, titled on verso

For Unclear Boundaries, 2008 Oil on wood 12 x 12 inches; 30.5 x 30.5 cm Signed, dated, titled on verso

For Past Trauma (For PTSD), 2008 Oil on wood 48 x 80 inches; 121.9 x 203.2 cm Signed, dated, titled on verso

To Inquire About this Artist, contact us at Art@woodwardgallery.net

“One of the most powerful ideas ever expressed to me about working through past trauma was this—you survived the event, you can survive the memory of the event. It felt concrete, and empowering, and while meditating on this idea, I saw the composition for the painting For Past Trauma clearly in my mind before I had even primed the panels. I wanted the piece to be large enough to represent healing on both a personal and societal scale. Our life experiences help form who we are—universally, we are connected to one another through both our joy and our pain. Memories, both good and troubling, can come in waves, flash back, or quietly emerge and recede. The center of this painting was to hold the viewers’ gaze, to be grounding and represent both stillness and strength, some permanent eye in the storm; while the space around it was intended to represent some kind of fluid motion, in flux, both swirling and powerful, yet inherently safe.”

For Vulnerability, 2008 Oil on wood 12 x 12 inches; 30.5 x 30.5 cm Signed, dated, titled on verso

Vertical Pulse, 2004 Oil on wood 10 x 7.75 inches; 25.4 x 19.69 cm Signed, titled and dated on verso

To Inquire About this Artist, contact us at Art@woodwardgallery.net

“I draw further imagery and inspiration from physics, botany, Eastern philosophy and alternative medicine. My paintings have always reflected a fascination with the evolution of form through multiplication, the way that light and shadow define one another, the containment and illusion of opposites, repetition and layering, the paralleling concepts of temporality and space, order and chaos, and systemic entropy.”

“Both with the abstractions and my representational works, I hope to leave the experience open to the viewer to interpret them as they would individually. To bring their own histories and state of being to the work. I’ve always loved the idea of the viewer completing the painting. I think art remains dynamic when this is the case. It is how I like to view others’ work as well. Here are some of the things I was thinking of while working on the piece, with the expectation that those viewing the work will complete them with their own way of seeing...”
