Margaret Morrison
Sweet Surrender JUNE 8 - SEPT 9, 2018
I blame my sweet tooth on my father. On hot summer nights, five decades ago, my parents and all six daughters would pack into the family station wagon and head to the drive-in movie theater. This of course included the ritual stop at the local drug store where my dad would purchase several bags of candy for us. I recall the utter joy of perusing up and down the long aisles looking for perfect treat; the shiny wrappers, the seductive packaging, the incalculable thrill of sweet pleasure. My father was the usual instigator in our frequent visits to the famous local ice cream store. I still get a nostalgic flutter remembering the giant double ice cream cone spinning slowly around on the sign outside the store. We would order long glass dishes piled with three scoops of ice cream, rivers of hot fudge and mountains whipped cream with a cherry gracing the summit. I can still remember the magical concoction that my father always ordered, “the Cashew Conquistador”. In those simple years, it didn’t take too long for me to arrive at the equation that sweets = unadulterated happiness. -Margaret Morrison, 2018
Margaret Morrison’s Sweet Surrender was selected for a summer exhibition because her realistic paintings of desserts will satisfy any sweet tooth! From marching gummy bears and giant lollipops to decadent glazed strawberries and rich chocolate cupcakes; I am sure you will find your favorite sweet treats amongst Morrison’s vast collection. Her paintings are larger than life (some are over 4 feet tall!) and will make your mouth water. Sweet Surrender will impress all who visit not only because of the sheer scale of Morrison’s work, but also how she captures textures, light, and reflection in her realistic paintings. -Alicyn Wiedrich, Art Curator City of Rocky Mount, Maria V.
