Happy New Year! Woodward Gallery welcomes 2022 with fresh, never-before-seen works of art by artists: Jose Baez, Susan Breen, Cosbe, RH DOAZ, Tommy Flynn, Sabina Forbes II, Val Kilmer, Moody, Margaret Morrison, Alex Racine, JM Rizzi, Daniel Rosenbaum, Matt Siren, and DM Weeks. Despite being isolated once again in 2021, these artists were busy creating on canvas, metal, wood, acrylic, and more. The year, 2022, in the Chinese zodiac, is represented by the Tiger, a symbol of strength, power, and bravery; a sentiment fully realized by this body of work. Woodward Gallery’s exhibition, New in 22 features bursts of bright colors, fuller compositions, and a leap of courage for each artist. This dynamic group exhibition depicts the roaring emotional pressure that current political, social, and environmental factors force upon each artist. After over two years of painful sacrifice, various expressive mediums, such as painting, sculpture, jewelry, and photography, speak to the core of each artist in this current moment. A blend of Abstract, Figurative and Street art, large and small paintings, as well as bright and dark colors all unite to face change and celebrate the challenge of carrying on. Pounce on this opportunity to visit Woodward Gallery from January to March 2022 for a fierce exhibition of artistic might.
Jose Baez Visionary King is a mixed media portrait made of found objects and materials collected throughout New York City, between 2020-2021. The sovereign figure’s position and gaze engage the viewer as both a subject and as a welcomed, curious observer. As you approach the work, complex patterns and textures are revealed, reflecting our own layers of experience. Questioning those layers, worn like majestic robes, is what the Visionary King asks you to explore.

Susan Breen Birds are something I’ve returned to, throughout my painting life, like some needed and evolving refrain. Particularly in difficult times, they lift me, and inspire—these ethereal and sublime creatures in their feathery physicality, in their song. These most recent bird paintings have helped me navigate the pandemic, provided a source of necessary light against the darkness and collective grief.

As Emily Dickinson’s poem “Hope” is the thing with feathers has always resonated with me: “Hope” is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul And sings the tune without the words And never stops - at all And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard And sore must be the storm That could abash the little Bird That kept so many warm I’ve heard it in the chillest land And on the strangest Sea Yet - never - in Extremity, It asked a crumb - of me.

RH DOAZ RH DOAZ calls on his Hungarian folk-art background to tell a story. He employs numbers within his compositions as an added layer of storytelling. The Artist says that he uses his favorite number “6” often in his work, and the number(19)82 was when he was 4 years old- a significant time in his life.

Tommy Flynn This is the beginning of a new project called Sacred Geometry. The Idea -Butterfly symbolizes flying up to the heavens while the nautilus shell detail grounds us to the earth and oceans. It is believed that the ancients considered that the experience of sacred geometry was essential to the education of the soul.

Val Kilmer The abstract icons with their depth of layers and infinite shoreline edges reference the fractal notion of zooming/falling infinitely into the image. Kilmer has noted the “black-hole” nature of these pieces. They are windows into another world.

Moody In his detailed plans of electrical circuitry, the artist’s minimal-line patterns felt soothing to paint; his geometric, abstract grids flow together on wooden surfaces. His painted grounding wires serve as an alternate path for current to run back to its source, preserving positive, renewable energy. In circuitry and in life, grounding reduces the risk of electrical overload. As in the human mind, numerous wires lead back to a conduit, which switches on and off throughout life. Moody’s Direct Current series of paintings considers interconnectivity to ease emotional shortages, illuminate positivity, and prevent isolation by bringing us together.

Margaret Morrison Cortona, one of the twelve jewels in the Etruscan crown, sits high on a hillside in Tuscany, overlooking an expansive valley. From this vantage point, the ancient hilltop town witnessed some of the most momentous events of human history; Hannibal’s defeat of the Roman legion by the shores of Lake Trasimeno and centuries later, the devastating clash between the Allied and Axis Forces in World War II along the Gothic Line. The ghosts of history are embedded in every wall and winding alley of Cortona. I love my Cortona summers when I teach painting in a deconsecrated chapel of an old convent. On the weekends, I hop on the train down in the valley and head off to Arezzo, Florence, Pisa, Lucca, looking for the open-air markets as inspiration for my paintings. 59

I’m on the hunt for table after table of cast-off objects and antiques, fascinated by the artistry of the shopkeepers as they choreograph the placement of each collectable. I recall that one Saturday, after a long day searching and coming up empty handed, I headed back up the steep, switchback road to Cortona. I slowly ambled past the Piazza Repubblica to the Piazza Signorelli for a gelato. To my delight, laid out before me, was a glorious sight of the local Cortonese antique market. One table, in particular, was spread with eclectic objects and animal figurines that sparkled and glinted under the bright Tuscan sunlight. I finally found my inspiration, back where I had started, in beautiful Cortona.

Daniel Rosenbaum For me birds are personal in that I had a lucid dream when I was in high school where I turned into an eagle and flew over a valley after practicing for months from the book by Carlos Castenada, The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge My “Bird-man” evokes flight, clouds, shape-shifting birds and otherworldly creatures. I want my painting to look like it happens all at once. It is an abstract journey over terrain. My process involves intuitive paint handling, based on organic natural forms. Spontaneous marking, staining, and layering of poured paint offer a 3-dimensional, textured feel from different angles of view. Birds equal freedom for me, which is something hopeful. 85
