Question 4: To what extent do technological developments in production and distribution impact on Graphic Design?

Introduction With the increase in technology and take over of social media the distribution of Graphic Design has no come down to simply the push of a button, all design can now be shared digtially world wide via the internet in seconds. The invention of various electronical reading devices such as the kindel and ipad are focing independent book shops out of business. In 1993 author Douglas Adams said prophetically: “All the things anybody liked about previous types of books – pictures, text, scrolling, page turning – could be modelled in software ad you could take as many books as you wanted, anywhere you liked”. The increase in digital design and newer techniques of printing have lead to that of traditional printing techniques becoming a form of art and only used to add a personal touch or design treatment that can only be shown through a physical piece of work. Although digital design can not compare to a personal touch applied through physical design, digital design is all about user experience and how the design works for a specific target audience. Many tests have to be run to ensure web/digital design provides the best user experience for that specific target audience. Advances in technology have also aided designers, allowing them to create online portfolios that clients can view at any time from anywhere. Online portfolios can score designers jobs without them even applying for them, the client can simply be browsing the web and like the look of the portfolio which then they can contact the designer in seconds.

Quotes

“Print no longer holds exclusively over great journalism or writing, and where once being ‘printed’ offered kudos, esteemed industry professionals are happy to offer their insight indiscriminately online” (Judge, M. 2010) “Electronic books have finally arrived. Portable, versatile and easy to use, they present a challenge to the paper and ink we’ve relied on for 1500 years.” (Lockridge, R. 1998) “All the things anybody liked about previous types of books – pictures, text, scrolling, page turning – could be modelled in software ad you could take as many books as you wanted, anywhere you liked.”

Quotes

“Technology has changed not just our landscape, but the expectations and behaviors of our audiences”. (Bambach, L, 2013) “As with any communications it’s about relevance – to whom you are communicating with. Even though more clients are using email and social media to communicate with customers, certain printed materials add the element of touch and connection that digital applications can never do.” (Evans, D. 2013)
