Staff Series: Us at Dunlop

To celebrate our collective journey and highlight the wealth of knowledge and experiences, we reached out to one of our esteemed long-term team members.

Here’s what Sarah Tommasi, our Customer Service Manager has to say:

Q. As a customer service manager, what are the main challenges you face in your role? How do you combat this? And what is something you appreciate/enjoy about your job?

A. Effective time management to multitask competing priorities is an important part of my role. This is managed through personal ownership, as well as the tremendous support I receive from the Customer Service Team Leader, Jessica Gruevski and the rest of the team Emily Smith and Sorcha Mepstead. These girls are exceptional ambassadors for Dunlop, who consistently provide service excellence to our customers. It is important to celebrate our wins as well as promote and maintain positive energy levels. A harmonious working environment is conducive to less stress and good vibes! I appreciate how many past and current Dunlop colleagues have been and continue to be a part of my life story.

Q. What are the challenges you face of being a woman in management?

A. The increase of females employed at Dunlop over the years has increased substantially. At our head office in Truganina, the female presence is powerful; there is a sisterhood that demonstrates just how amazing the culture at Dunlop Flooring is, where women are celebrated. Despite being in a male dominated industry, this has never hindered my ability to perform my management responsibilities. I believe that feminine energy and intuition when used authentically, is in fact a superpower!

Q. Why have you chosen to stay at Dunlop for 15 years? Did you expect to stay here for this long when you first joined the company? What was your initial role when you were first hired?

I am a big believer in loving your job; if you enjoy coming to work, it will show in your interactions and energy. My current role as Dunlop Flooring’s Customer Service Manager is what I was first hired as, having had the opportunity to reside at our Sunshine Manufacturing Site before we relocated to our amazing Truganina facility. We spend so much time with our work colleagues, it is important to foster these connections to encourage genuine trust. I am blessed to consider the Customer Service team like family and colleagues forever friends.

Q. What is one piece of advice you would give to your younger self when you first started at Dunlop? If not, what is one piece of advice you’d give to someone starting out in their career?

A. You must believe in yourself; your instincts are usually right - trust them. Dig deeper to fully understand a situation and follow your intuition. As we age and learn through life mistakes and experiences, it is important to always maintain a growth mindset and create boundaries to protect your peace if necessary. Keeping active, eating for nutrition, with a sprinkle of meditation and mindfulness are also vital in maintaining a healthy and happy life. Be kind to yourself and don’t be afraid to ask for help. You often find great friendships and mentors when you show a little vulnerability.

What is sensitive choice?

What is the blue butterfly?

The iconic blue butterfly is a symbol of approval to proudly show that a product or service is Sensitive Choice approved as asthma and allergy friendly.

Sensitive Choice is a program of the National Asthma Council Australia, committed to empowering people to live better with asthma and allergies. In Australia, over 2.8 million people (11%) have asthma, and more than 4 million people have an allergy. There is currently no cure for asthma, but maintaining good asthma management and reducing the impact of triggers or allergens is key to minimising asthma attacks.

A rigorous approval process

The National Asthma Council Australia has a panel of experts that rigorously review products or services that are submitted for Sensitive Choice approval. This panel can include an allergist, an engineer, a general practitioner, a pharmacist, a lawyer and other health care professionals and experts.

Companies that apply must provide independent testing results and evidence that prove any and all claims about that product. The applicant must also prove their product or service’s potential to benefit someone living with asthma and allergies. Over half of all products submitted are rejected, many applications require multiple panel reviews, with the panel often asking for further information and evidence.

A great choice for everyone, a Sensitive Choice for people with asthma or allergies

All Sensitive Choice approved products and services can benefit someone with asthma or allergies by minimising the presence or impact of triggers in the home. Triggers are usually a substance (allergen) that a person’s immune system reacts to, and often cause asthma or allergy symptoms. There are many triggers that can be found in and around the home. Surprisingly, indoor air quality can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air quality. The most common triggers that compromise air quality and can cause symptoms to flare-up are:

• Dust mites

• Smoke • Mould

• Pollens • Pets • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) For everyone, minimising the presence and effect of these triggers in the home can promote healthier indoor air quality and the wellbeing of your family. For people with asthma or allergies, minimising triggers can help better manage their symptoms.

Dunlop Flooring is proudly Sensitive Choice approved

Sensitive Choice’s partnership with Dunlop spans over 18 years since the program first started back in 2006. Dunlop Flooring’s ongoing partnership and support of the Sensitive Choice program contributes to research and education led by the National Asthma Council to reduce the health, social and economic impacts of asthma and allergies both in Australia and overseas.

Sensitive Choice is proud to have Dunlop Flooring as an approved partner, with the full range of Heartridge Vinyl, Luxury Vinyl and Hybrid floors approved as asthma and allergy aware, along with some Dunlop underlays.

With the absence of undesirable phthalates and a formaldehyde emission rating of E0, Dunlop Flooring products can help reduce the risk of asthma and allergy symptoms in the home. The E0 rating is one of the lowest emission standards for formaldehyde, indicating that the product emits formaldehyde at minimal levels, emitting less than or equal to 0.5 mg/l.

Formaldehyde is a common volatile organic compound (VOC) that is prominently found in building materials. If products containing formaldehyde are brought into the home, they can continue to emit harmful gasses and compromise indoor air quality.

In recent years, Sensitive Choice has been proud to showcase Dunlop Flooring’s asthma and allergy friendly vinyl tiles at events like the Melbourne Home Show.

Look for the blue butterfly in-store, online or at events!

Along with Dunlop Flooring products, the Sensitive Choice program has a diverse range of other approved products and services, including air treatment devices, vacuum cleaners, laundry liquids and even pet beds.

Sensitive Choice is a global program with trademarks in over 80 countries, so people with asthma and allergies can look out for the reassuring blue butterfly around the world.

Hundreds of households and building products from over 65 partners globally have joined the Sensitive Choice program after passing our rigorous review process. Look for the blue butterfly next time you’re out shopping.
