From the Pack Leader Dear Dog Lovers, It’s that time of year again, when we all sit around the table enjoying a steaming hot roast dinner on a scorching hot Summer’s day! And let’s not forget the fun of wrapping presents, catching up with family and friends and endless hours spent shopping and travelling... but what do our four-legged friends think of the “silly season”? This month, we have information to help keep pooch cool on the hot days, tips on what NOT to feed your dog as well as some helpful advice when it comes to thunderstorms. Q: Why do dogs jump up on people?
A: 1) puppies are ‘wired’ to jump up. They know that when the mother returns home she will regurgitate food for them to eat. They jump to get it from her mouth. When the owner returns home, they will often jump in the hope of food. And you thought they were pleased to see you !!! 2) we pick up puppies because we find them so cute, and we make a fuss of them high up. The puppy starts to realize the fun happens ‘up there’. 3) it can be the dog’s way of showing dominance to the owner and to let visitors know this is my home and won’t accept any domination from them. FACT: Some dogs even start to pace and whine half an hour or more before a storm. They may be reacting to a sudden drop in air pressure, sounds of thunder that we can’t hear yet, or the electrical charge of the air.

To quickly make an old jar or canister into a dog treat container without lots of time or effort, use decorative stickers to cover the outside of the jar in dog-themed designs. Tie a piece of fabric or ribbon with paw prints on it around the top of the jar for a simple makeover in minutes. Glue a dog-shaped or paw print charm to the ribbon or the front of the jar itself. Fill jar with the Christmas Treats on page 21! You will need: 1. a large jar or container with lid 2. scissors 3. craft glue 4. paint brush 5. paing 5. permanent marker 6. coloured papers/fabrics/stickers

Pugs belong to the toy breed and originated in China. Pugs are square and thick set,have a large round head,large round eyes,deep distinct wrinkles and a tightly curled tail. They are real clowns and love to show off, have a great sense of humour and will always put a smile on your face. The pug is definitely a companion dog and loves to always be by your side. They are also a very social breed, mixing well with other dogs and children. Pugs need a home that is heated in the winter and air conditioned in the summer, this is due to their flat faces which makes them prone to breathing problems and overheating quickly.
They are prone to certain health issues such as: -PDE pug dog encephalitis, a fatal inflammatory brain disease unique to pugs -Allergies can occur and eye problems due to their protruding eyes -Patellar luxation -dislocation of the kneecap
Pugs come in two colours; fawn and black, fawns have a double coat and lose more hair than the blacks.Pugs shed lots of hair so be prepared for hair all over your clothes, car and furniture, regular brushing helps with this. They need their nose folds cleaned regularly and may need anal sacs emptied from time to time.They snore loudly, wheeze and snort. Pugs also run out of puff easily, they are not an active breed but still require daily walks in the cooler parts of the day. Pugs can be greedy and become overweight which isn’t good for their breathing. Feeding the correct portion size and good quality food will help to keep your pug at an ideal weight.

Owning a Pug can be a great way to meet people, when out walking pugs people always stop to admire them. The Central Coast have their very own pug meet ups where the owners get to talk pug, dress up their dogs for fashion parades and make new friends while the pugs run around in pug heaven. The life span of the pug is 12-15 years. Be warned once you own a pug - one of the friendliest dogs there is - you will become totally pug smitten! When considering purchasing a pug always consider rescuing a senior, they hold a special place in my heart and anyone that owns a senior pug is totally blessed. Imagine what it would be like if you had to wear a fur-coat 24 hours a day during the sweltering summer months. This is a good indication of how your furry pets are feeling during these months as well! Help them stay comfy by following some of Pet Resorts’ top tips to keep cool this summer. •

hydration is key for all pets to stay healthy and beat the heat. Keep plenty of fresh, shaded, cool water nearby and available for your pet. If you are heading out for any period of time you can add ice to the water to help it stay cooler for longer. If you leave your pet outdoors while you’re away, make sure they have an adequate space to get out of the scorching sun. If your pet has a tendency to be a sun god or goddess, don’t forget to slap some sunscreen on their nose, tummy and paws . Another great way to bond with your pet and keep them active during the summer months is to swim! Take your pooches to the beach, lake, or Pet Resorts Terrigal pool for a dip to stay cool! K-mart and Big-W also sell affordable shell pools for a splashing good time at home. If your pet is hesitant to swim, or isn’t a water baby by nature, you can also keep them cool by wetting a towel for them to lay down on since they actually cool from the tummy and feet up! Summer tends to be the most fun season we have with our pets as the longer days make way for longer walks and playtimes, but it can also be one of the most dangerous if we’re not paying attention. Doggy Recipe of The Month

2 1/2 cups wholewheat flour 1 tsp salt 1 egg 1 tsp chicken stock powder 1/2 cup hot water
Pre-heat oven to 200°C. Dissolve stock in hot water. Add remaining ingredients Knead dough until it forms a ball (approx. 3 minutes) 5. Roll dough until 1/2 inch thick 6. Cut using bone shaped cookie cutters. 7. Place dough pieces on lightly greased cookie tin & bake for 30 minutes. (keep for up to 4 weeks)
