"The term 'freshman' is an utter granfalloon."* --Bill Henley, 1972 Surely no group of individuals entering the College of Wooster for the first time has ever been quite the monolithic and subhuman thing all too often implied by the term "freshman class". Yet many members of such a group need help getting assimilated as individuals into the C.O.W. community. (Whether they should necessarily ~ to get assimilated into this thing we got here is another question, but by the time you find out the answer it'll probably be too late.) We hope this booklet will help with that assimilation. Despite the many pitfalls lying in the way of its production, most of which we fell into with a resounding thud, we believe we've produced something which will help the new people get acquainted with each other and the old people to get acquainted with them. Our thanks to all the new people who answered our questionnaire. Particular thanks to those who responded to our invitation to offer some bit of selfrevelation beyond the usual lists of interests ("My interests are life, people, God and the proof of Fermat's last theorem.") Where possible, these statements have been included in quotation marks. Unfortunately, those 2-inch-square boxes don't lend themselves to verbatim quotes; we hope the Readers-Digest-condensed versions to which we usually had to resort convey the intent of the writers •. Thanks also to the nice people who advertised this year, and to those groups who provided information for our by-no-means-exhaustive descriptions of campus organizations. (And apologies to those we couldn't fit in.) Thanks to Byron Morris and his intrepid Admissions Department for their help. And special thanks to Bob Zimmerman and Melanie Safka, without whose help and inspiration we might not have survived the act of creation. Bill Henley and Jeff Linton, co-editors
So where are you tonight, Helga Sue?
*Granfalloon--a word coined by Kurt Vonnegut to denote an attempt to group human beings into an imaginary and meaningless categorization. 3
Campus Council is a decision-making body whose membership consists of students, faculty and administration. Council currently includes nine students (the President and Vice-President of SGA, the Chairman of Lowry Center Board, and six members-at-large), three faculty, and three administrato~s. Campus Council has the power to legislate in areas of student life, and to make recommendations to the President of the College, the Board of Trustees, the faculty, or any campus group or committee. Council also allocates portions of its annual budget to various campus organizations, such as those to be described on the following pages. Campus Council serves as a forum for members of its three constituencies to express and debate ideas. Council meets weekly, and members of the college community are invited to attend and participate. Anyone may obtain a place on Council's agenda by contacting the Chairman of Campus Council, Rod Kennedy. II II! 111111111111111
The Student Government Associations seeks to be the voice of the student body on campus. The General Assembly, its legislative branch, consists of elected representatives from all campus living units. The GA allocates the SGA budget, makes recommendations on campus life . and other student concerns, and tries to publish Potpourri, the daily news-ads-and-trivia sheet, not to mention the dubious publication you now hold . SGA has financed The Cage, multi-media shows, all-campus parties, anti-war demonstrations, and many other odd activities, as well as running summer storage and end-of-quarter buses to Cleveland Airport. General Assembly meets weekly, and its meetings are open to any interested people. Students are 'urged to attend and participate in Assembly meetings. The GA is elected by living units in the fall of each academic year. The executive branch of SGA, the Cabinet, is elected in the spring of each year in.a campus-wide election. Current members of the Cabinet include: Pres~dent: Carlos Singer Vice-President: Erik Olsen Secretaries: Carol Watkins, Noreen Markley Treasurer: Dave Maloney Campus Council members-at-large: Meg Munson, Anne Liske, Dave Giloran, Jeff Bates, Frank Giaimo, Rod Kennedy Lowry Center Board chairman: Larry Kurth 4
Lowry Center Board provides the aampus with films, concerts, dances, speakers, and various other types of programs thetstrive to meet the needs of college students. LCB is organized into a number of committees specializing in different activities or services, including: Arts & Crafts: Lowry Center basement houses the Crafts Center, offering classes and activities in macrame, weaving, candlemaking, ceramics, jewelry making, furniture refininshing and reupholstery, choldren's workshop, and darkroom. Art: provides rented or borrowed art exhibits for the walls of Lowry Center. Current Issues: brings in speakers and politically oriented films, on topics ranging from the energy crisis to flying saucers to American Indian culture. Film: presents recent box office films at reasonable rates (usually 50¢ or 65¢), offering a new movie each Friday and Saturday night. Black Forum: provides the campus with black speakers, musicians and artists, works with the Black Student Association, and plans special events aimed at bringing black culture and new black students to campus. Dance: generally schedules three or more allcampus dances a quarter, free to the students. Concerts: seeks to provide the campus with concert attractions ranging from Big Name Entertainment (last year the Beach Boys and Brian Auger) to local talent. Spec tal Events .: organizes Homecoming and Parents' Weekend. Recreation Unit Committee includes six subcommittees: Travel: runs weekend trips to major cities and buses to concerts, sports events, riots and other places and events of special interest. Social: sponsors programs of all sorts ranging from special courses in Chinese cuisine and auto mechanics to trivia bowls and faculty firesides. Camping: organizes camping trips in Ohio and Pennsylvania once or twice a quarter. Skiing: gets group rates for students at local ski slopes and organizes one-day and vacation ski trips. Sailing: has boats and organizes sailing excursions on Charles Mill Lake. Recreation: organizes tournaments for the pinball junkies and other habitues of the Lowry 5
Center game room, as well as sponsoring outdoor activities. The Publicity Committee, possibly the most important of the lot, makes sure that student know about the a c tivities of the other committees through posters, handouts, mailbox stuffings and other manifestations of the old Madison Avenue subliminal hard sell. Chairmen of Dance, Concerts, Current Issues and Recreation Unit committees are elected by the student body; other chairmen are appointed by a panel of LCB and the LC director and assistant director. Students are invited and urged to join LCB committees and work with LCB in planning activities in their fields of interest. 11111111111111111111
The men's intramural athletic program presents eleven different sports annually, including football, basketball, volleyball, softball, bowling, golf, tennis, billiards, free throwing, table tennis, chess, billiards and poker. Women are eligible for all non-contact sports. All students, college employees and administrators are eligible. Participation by section teams scores points toward the Intramural Traveling Trophy, symbolic of section intramural supremacy. Competition is usually at two levels: A and B League. The intramural office is located on the floor of the new Physical Education Center. We encourage section members, independents and freshmen alike to participate in the C.O.W. intramural program. Director of I~tramurals: Mike Beitzel Student Director: Dwight Pike II! 11111111111111111
All women students at the college are automatically members of the Women's Athletic Association. In .the past the W.A.A. was concerned with supporting intercollegiate sports as well as intramural activities. Now, the Physical Education Department supports six varsity sports for women, and the W.A.A. can concentrate on providing a st~a~g intramural program. Some of the sports offered are flag football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, co-ed volleyball, softball, tennis, and personal conditioning. The W.A.A. is eager to try new ideas, also, and is open to suggestions. For more information, visit the W.A.A. office in the P.E.C., or contact Alpha Alexander. The W.A.A. hopes all women on campus will consider participating. 6
The Black Student Association is open to all Blacks and Third World students who attend the College of Wooster. Its programming is centered in three major areas: Political, Cultural and Admissions. Politically, the BSA is active in dealing with the college campus and surrounding community to insuue tha t Blacks are accorded full respect, It tries to make gains for the betterment of Blacks here on campus, as well as in this countryy Culturally, the BSA is concerned with exposing the beautiful Black heritage and culture to the campus and community, and instilling pride within its members. In the field of Admissions, the BSA is active in helping the administration recruit Blacks and Third World students. The BSA looks forward to your presence here at Wooster and your joining its ranks. The Wooster People's Party is a radical action group loosely affiliated with the national People's Party, which ran Dr. Benjamin Spook for President in the 1972 elections. The People's Party aims to win for all people the full measure of political, social and economic justice which is this nation's unfulfilled promise, and to help people take control of their own lives. In pursuit of this latter goal, the WPP has concentrated on winning for students the determinant power in the college decision-making process. "We believe that the college can best serve as an educational institut~on if it accords its students a full role in the decision-making process." It has worked for this goal primarily through the Campus Council and Student Government Association. At the same time, the WPP has organized activities around national issues, primarily American involvement in the Indochinese war. It has sponsored anti-war demonstrations, a benefit for a Vietnamese hospital, and radical-oriented speakers and sultural events. The WPP rejects any hard-line political ideology. Its politics are a blend of Gandhi and the Fuga, Ben Spook and Country Joe. Everyone is welcome to work with it on any projects. For more information, contact Bob Newman, Martha Boland or Ned Adams.

The "Sections" are the College of Wooster's six local fraternities, most of which reside in college dormitories divided especially for their use. They are not affiliated with national fraternities. A main appeal of the sections is the fellowship or fraternal spirit which they offer. This fellowship is difficult to define, but is clearly felt by most section men, By living together in a section and taking part in its activities, the members are more fully able to appreciate the divergence of personalities among themselves, Sections differ greatly in size, member attitude, the number and nature of their functions, and their degree of fraternal spirit. Rumors and stereotypes about and classifications of the various sections, which you are bound to hear, are often inaccurate and misleading; the only way to judge a section fairly and accurately is to become familiar with its members and their personalities and ideas. Among other activities, most of the sections organize parties and dances, form intramural sports teams and participate in public-service projects. The sections can only be as active, creative and successful as the individuals who form them; many people, however, definitely feel that sections make a significant contribution to the lives of their members and to the campus through the opportunities and functions which they provide. A number of men on campus, for various valid reasons, have chosen not to join any section. Both as a student and as a member of the college community, the "independent" (n6n-section member) is accorded the same opportunities and responsibilities as his section peers. Each freshman should make his own decision concerning whether or not to join a section. Often in the past, some of those who are undecided have merely followed the lead of their classmates, sometimes with unhappy results. 11111111111111111111
Myers House, located opposite Mateer Hall and diagonally across from Hygeia, seeks to provide a wide-ranging counseling service for all students. Originally organized as the Drug Referral and Education Center, to help people handle drug-related problems, Myers House has now expanded its services to deal with any problem colYege students may encounter~足 academics, sexuality, dorm living situations, etc. Drop in anytime, or call extension 493, to talk to a student counselor about anything from birth control to a drug crisis to conflicts with a roommate,

The Voice, the College of Wooster's fearless, fighting student newspaper, endeavors each week to bring you the latest news, scandals, unconfirmed rumors and assorted irrelevancies coming out of the C.O.W. campus. It hopes also to serve as an outlet for student opinion and student creative effort. If your life's ambition is to be the next Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, you are most cordially invited, not to mention solicited, implored and commanded, to stop by the commodious Voice office where the intrepid editors stand ready to offer you a place as a reporter, columnist, proofreader, typist, stuffer-of-pages-inside-other-pages, or some other exciting and fulfilling journalistic role. Articles, columns, cartoons, poison-pen criticism and letter-bombs submitted by non-staff members are also most welcome; letters to the editor will be printed as space and the libel law allow~, and other material will be seriously considered for publication. Contact editor Richard Kielbowicz, or managing editor (hmmmph, ahem!) Bill Henley, and find out what you can do for us. I I I I I II I I I II II II II II
WCWS is Wooster's Public Broadcasting radio service, completely student managed and operated from Wishart Hall. Its program schedule includes news, sports, public-affairs programming, and rock, soul, jazz and classical music. All members of the community are el~gible to join its staff. If you are at all interested in radio work, be sure to talk to a WCWS staff member; even if you're not, st~p by and see the station facilities on the second floor of Wishart. And don't forget to tune in WCWS-FM 92 fo~ all the best in Public Broadcast Radio. II II II II I II II II I ! II I
The Wooster Women's Alliance, an organization for female members of the Wooster college community, hopes to help Wooster women educate themselves about themsleves, and to stimulate the community at large to understand and re-evaluate the roles assigned to women and men in our society. Activities for members include open forums and small discussion groups on feminism-related subjects, and the planning of special pro grams for the organization and/or the campus community. For more information, contact co-chairpeople Beth Woodrow and Joey Van Schaik.
