INTRODUCTION My name is Subin Woo from International School of Phnom Penh. I created this booklet to introduce you lots of different foreign arts that can be found in Phnom Penh. Before the Khmer Rouge era, Cambodia was a hub of diverse and abundant arts and culture in Southeast Asia. All different kinds of arts, music, theater, visual art and dance runs strongly through the blood of the Cambodians. All the skillful artists were in every corner of the town, children enjoyed dancing, singing and drawing with the joy and the smiles. Art flourished all around the country, all around the city. However, in between the year 1 975 and 1 979, one big thing happend to Cambodia which destroyed a big portion of the art, Khmer Rouge. In estimation, four years of Khmer Rouge led 2 million Cambodians to death. Especially the Cambodian artists were executed. They said 90% of Cambodia artists were dead during this era. This incident blew up the culture of arts in Cambodia. It was not easy to recover the arts of Cambodia again. There were few people in Cambodia who tried to revive arts into the country. Some of them were foreigners who tried to introduce foreign arts to the country. This enabled the Cambodians to be aware of other culture, acquired knowledge of different forms of arts. However, I think still not a lot of Cambodians are into the world of arts. They are still not aware of the importance of art. One factor I think it is because of time. Arts are something that humankind made when they had spare time to enjoy. Since Cambodia is still in underdeveloped situation, not many local people can enjoy art. However, there is another way for Cambodians to open their eyes on arts through arts place introduced by foreigners. It allows some Cambodians to learn techniques and skills, and some of them are working with these companies with the proper working condition and wages. It means lots of experts in each field can be nurtured by these foreigners in Cambodia. In this booklet, I am going to guide you to several significant art shops/place/organization in Phnom Penh that are managed by foreigners, Koreans, French, Canadians, Japanese, Hungarians, etc. I wish numerous people will see my booklet, and visit these shops which will develop the industry of both foreign and local arts in Cambodia. So turn the page and begin now!

PEACE CAFE

Crafts made by Cambodian disables

P

Peace cafe is a craft shop that sells both craft and food products. Peace cafe is managed by the NGO called Banteay Prieb. Banteay Prieb was founded in 1 991 by the Jesuit Refugee Service but it is presently managed by Jesuit Service Cambodia. In this community, they educate the disabled people to build both their technical skills and the ability of living by themselves. The owner of this shop said “Our school’s main purpose is the welfare of disabled people. Welfare can mean earning money, but not only that, we want them to

2

"We hope disabled Cambodians can live normal lives like normal people." develop more confidence in their lives through thinking, planning, and doing something all by themselves.” In Banteay Prieb school, they teach wood crafting and textiling. Some who are selected among the graduate students from the school may work in Production where they can create their works based on what they've learned in the school and they can also learn from gaining more experience. In the production, people do not divide their jobs, but individually each creates an entire art piece. It means each person is an artist not a

technician. Also, since this community is operated by a Priest’s association, most of the products are related to Catholicism. Some products portray a cross, a dove and a prayer. The main reason why the owner put up Peace cafe is to introduce the students’ works to the city. Since Banteay Prieb school is outside the city, not many people are able to visit the shop inside the community. So, she decided to open Peace cafe. Peace cafe can be a great place to relax with its quiet and cozy atmosphere. In addition to that, they provide great snacks and drinks with an affordable price. https://www.facebook.com/craf tpeacecafe#_=_ No.79, Borey varina, St.201 0, Kok Khleang, Phnom Penh Thmey, Phnom Penh, Craft Peace Cafe 098 903 625 Peace Cafe

FUNKY JUNK

Products made with recycled plastic bags

F

Funky Junk is an innovative social enterprise making art works with reusable plastic bag. Funky Junk has a partnership with the community development NGO Bridges Across Borders Southeast Asia. A group of people whose first goal in mind was settled right after they saw the problem of poor education about environmental awareness, lack of incentives from the local government, and a rapidly expanding population have resulted in plastic bag waste covering more and more of the countryside in

4

"We find hope from colorful plastics." Cambodia. Using lots of cheap and non-biodegradable plastic bags can cause severe diseases, even death or other health hazards to humans. The group started looking for a solution about this problem. Finally, they decided to make products out of discarded plastic bags which can contribute to save environment and fair job opportunities for local workers. They divided the jobs into several steps in order to make the work more efficient. First, a group of rubbish pickers from the towns and countryside picked up plastic bags. Second, in Funky Junk

center, other group of people wash, disinfect and dry the plastic bags. Third, sort cleaned plastic bags by colors. This process is important to allow them to offer items that are colorful and unique. Lastly, they make it into lots of different kinds of products. Those products are baskets, hats, bags, cushion and etc. These products are only available on retailers that are authorized. Buying Funky Junk products contributes both cleaner environment, fair trade income, training and community benefits for Cambodia’s local producers. Their goal for the future is to advertise Funky Junk more, and to let the people realize that plastic bags can be reusable and use it as a beautiful art decoration. http://www.funkyjunkrecycled. com/index.htm Funky Junk

WATER LILY

Accesories with Recycled Materials

W

Waterlily is a shop where all the products are made of recycled materials. Christine Gauthier settled in Cambodia in 1 996. Her enthusiasm for jewelry begins with her discovery of nature and she seeks to interpret it in a different way the way she sees it. In February 2002, she created the Water Lily. She had first came out with the shop name Waterlily after she thought of beautiful water lilies from her home town. Also, in love with Cambodia’s nature, discovering flowers and trees,

24

"Playing with the materials..." she was disappointed with the trash that are thrown everywhere on the street even though they can be reusable as a beautiful art work. Her works are unique and different from any other products designed and put together by hand. She explained that these pieces reflect the soul of Cambodia and endow her jewelry with a spirit of memory. Christine’s works are fresh and original with the wonderful mixture of colors and materials which makes her work unique. Waterlily has lots of variety to choose from the pieces for

weddings, outfit, accessories including a purse and widebrimmed hat. All these products are made with recycled materials, buttons as the most common one. Some works are produced by Christine herself but some are produced by local women who are skillful in this work. They are getting proper wages with the good condition of working place provided. "Studying the basics isn’t easy" people in Cambodia can have a proper education about art starting from the basics. Yamada school of art is for basic learning of all categories of fine art including design, painting, sculpture and architecture. They also provide lessons for kids arts. The courses they are providing are in different range of varieties which enables the students to start from the basic throughout masteral. Yamada believes learning basic skills are very important and the most hard thing in art since all the professional arts are based

on basic skills. They believe these basic learnings of art is necessary for high quality Cambodian art. Yamada Art School contains skillful Cambodian teachers who are taught by Yamada. According to Ricardo Casal, one of teacher, Yamada is providing young artists with an education that is sorely lacking at the country’s top art institutions. Because of these reasons, lots of international and local students are visiting to this art school. https://www.facebook.com/ya madaschoolofart/ No.BB11 , St.1 01 , Sangkat Boeung Trabeak, Khan Chamkarmorn, Phnom Penh, Cambodia 01 22231 60
