Your is thriving! September 1, 2015 – August 31, 2016

Message from the Director As a collecting institution, WAM continued to enhance its holdings over the last fiscal year. In a spectacular way, this was possible via gifts; Hester Diamond’s second art donation, Cornelis van Haarlem’s “Paris and Oenone”, is only one of them. In addition, those who contributed to our acquisition funds can be very proud; we were able to purchase a masterwork by Otto Dix from 1931, as well as one of the stars of the recent art fair in Maastricht, Philippe Jacques van Bree’s large scale “The Studio of Flower Painter van Dael at the Sorbonne,” which was painted in 1806. Both of these works are now on view in our galleries. You should check them out when you next visit.

Recent Acquisitions Otto Dix, The Pregnant Woman, 1931 This important painting by one of the most significant German artists of the twentieth century has transformed our modern European holdings. Our acquisitions all strive to make major statements, and this powerful and startling work of art provokes strong, complex, and varied reactions about the body, motherhood, pregnancy, and beauty, as well as raising important questions about modernism, realism, and the female nude. The work makes particular sense at WAM, given the strong strand of figuration in our modern and contemporary collections, as well as our strengths in German photography, prints, and drawings between the wars. Philippe-Jacques Van Brée, The Studio of the Flower Painter Van Daël at the Sorbonne, 1816 This engaging painting depicts the studio of Jan Frans Van Dael, a floral painting specialist of the late 1700s and early 1800s. Van Brée presented this work in 1817 to acclaim at the most important and visible exhibition venue for art in Paris, the Salon. Van Dael’s students each pursue a different aspect of painting, and all the women were Parisian elites connected to the arts – some amateurs, others professional painters, who publically exhibited and sold their work. Their decision to come to Van Dael’s studio for artistic training was unsurprising since, as one author at the time wrote, the studio was the “most beautiful and the most agreeably populated studio of Paris” with “amiable companions, seductive models, and a skillful master.”

A Conservation Milestone The Last Judgment Tapestry, Flemish, about 1505 Many long-time visitors to the WAM will remember this magnificent tapestry, which hung for more than fifty years in the Museum’s Renaissance Court. Originally woven in Flanders, which today refers to the Dutch-speaking northern part of Belgium, the tapestry was part of an illustrious set representing the allegorical history of Christianity. There are few complete surviving tapestries depicting The Last Judgment, and the Worcester panel is among the best. By 1990, the tapestry was soiled and tired looking. It was taken down and put in storage while efforts to raise funds for restoration took place. Now, thanks to the generosity of the Brussels-based King Baudouin Foundation, René and Karin Jonckheere Fund, this masterpiece was conserved to the highest standards of preservation and shown again in its full splendor from April to September 2016. worcesterart.org

Statement of Financial Position As visitation over the past five years more than doubled, our budget has grown, too, and our income streams diversified considerably: thanks to a steady increase in raised revenue, we are resolving a decade-long over reliance on endowmentgenerated income.
