F r o m 2 Ric e St r eet Congratulations to Assistant Golf Professional Aaron Walker who recently qualified for the National Assistant Professionals Championship! Aaron is one of six who qualified from the New England Section of the PGA and will now compete in November for the National Championship. The Club is getting slower as we continue to close holes on the golf course. One of the unforeseen consequences is low traffic in the Golf Shop. The shop is still wellstocked for your Fall and Holiday needs. Please keep the shop in mind for your Holiday gift-giving, gift cards are easy and a great gift! The Hanse restoration is moving forward at a rapid pace, on time, and on budget. With only a few holes left open, we are not charging cart or guest fees for the remainder of the year. We thank you for your patience and understanding as the course routing changes on a daily basis. Chef Cobb has released our new Fall Menu for Clubhouse dining and Jen continues to make some tempting Craft Cocktails.

Baked, Stuffed Sweet Potato, roasted r ed gr apes, wal nuts and whi pped goat cheese.

Friday Happy Hour is back with appetizers and a variety of refreshments for you to enjoy with your fellow members. Hope to see you soon!

Troy Sprister General Manager/COO

The Worcester Golf Cl ub, circa 1900

The Worcester Country Club came from what was origin ally known as the Worcester Golf Club. It was formed from a meeting held on June 8th, 1900. The course was located near what is now Lincoln Plaza and had only 9 holes. When it opened for golf on Saturday, July 15th, 1900, only 8 of the 9 holes were ready for play. Somehow in five weeks, a golf club was founded, they hired a Professional and produced a golf course. How this was accomplished so quickly is a mystery. A modest clubhouse was built which is seen in this photo. In 1902 their membership book listed 136 active men members and 76 active women members. The majority of the women listed were not the wives of the men. Worcester Golf Club like its spin-off, the Worcester Country Club had a ready supply of caddies. Caddies were not allowed on the course unless they were performing their job thus, they were unable to groom their own games at WGC. Some of the Worcester Golf Club Rules in 1902 included: Worcester Golf Club yearly dues were $10. The initiation fee was $10. Guests were invited and charged a fee of fifty cents a day. Horses or carriages were to be left at the barn. No player, Caddie, or onlooker should move or talk during a stroke. A player should carefully fill all holes made by himself in a bunker. Caddy bags should not be left on the putting green. If a match failed to keep its pace… and lose in distance more than one clear hole…it may be passed on request being made!
