rofessional photographers take their craft seriously, especially those who have spent years perfecting their work: the timing, the lighting, the expression. All must be perfect to produce a picture worth keeping. Many of them grew up on traditional ďŹ lm photography and spent hours in a darkroom, their hands wrist deep in chemicals. Darkrooms are still among us, but there has been a revolution in the photo industry over the past several years. Film has been scrapped, in some cases, for high-tech cameras that can store hundreds of images. Whereas the traditional photographer put his or her trust in the naked eye and own talents, the modernday photographer can trash the photo and snap another one. And if it still doesn’t come out just right, there’s always Photoshop on the computer, where you can adjust just about everything in the photograph and – ethics be damned – even add something that wasn’t there in the original shot. There is a divide between the old-school photographer and the digital shutterbug. In this week’s cover story we look at the evolution of cameras, how images are presented, and photographers as we know them today.

Flames fanned in Worcester again as a 911 caller to the fire department reported a woman running from a vacant, three-story apartment on Birch Street moments before a porch fire erupted. The fire occurred in the early-morning hours of Aug. 9, days after a meeting in the Pleasant Street neighborhood addressing concerns over a recent rash of fires there. -4 The number of building and outdoor fires in the city declined last year and could be down again this year, according to a report from Fire Chief Gerard Dio. + 3 Worcester welcomes thousands of visitors for two separate sporting events over the weekend: the seventh-annual Worcester World Cup 2012 soccer tournament at Foley Stadium and the 2012 Masters National Rowing Championship, which drew about 1,800 competitors to Lake Quinsigamond. Both events were expected to pump much-needed cash into local businesses. +4 City woman says she was married to three men at the same time to help them obtain green cards. he recent spate of fires in the vicinity of Pleasant Street has everyone’s nerves on edge, but perhaps none more so than the people who live in and around the area. Safety is a concern and the rumblings have grown louder over worries, so far unfounded, that a serial arsonist has targeted the city. There is some sense of relief that, as yet, no lives have been lost, but some community activists want to be more involved in resolving the problem. Most recently, there has been a dispute over whether police should release video surveillance footage of a trash bin fire on Chandler Street behind Golden Pizza back in March. The Pleasant Street Neighborhood Network Center (PSNNC) and its director, Mary Keefe, were among those asking police to release the video at an Aug. 6 meeting where concerns over fires on Pleasant and Irving streets were aired. Police have refused. “They’re saying it’s grainy,” Keefe says of one of the explanations offered as to why the video shouldn’t be released. “We see people all the time in this neighborhood and you can often identify them by what they wear.” Kevin Ksen, a board member for

City’s plans yield competition for fields Walter Bird Jr.
A
planned new recreational field at Knights of Columbus (K of C) Park has ignited the passion of area athletes and drawn concern from residents who believe the city has overlooked other areas of need. It has also revealed a massive competition for precious recreation space. People living in the neighborhood surrounding Coes Pond cite a master plan that was drafted several years ago and included improvements in the area that still have not been made. In the meantime, officials are getting ready to spend about $450,000 to build a natural grass field, playground and other amenities at the park adjacent to the Botany Bay Residential Community. “The city has the money to implement the master plan at K of C,” says Gerald
Powers, a well-known local activist. “We saw the fact that the city has a need [for a new field]. What is disappointing is we keep getting put off on the implementation of the parts of the master plan we’re interested in.” Specifically, Powers says, the city’s original master plan includes improvements and upgrades at Coes Beach, such as making the bathhouse comply with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) and additional parking space. “We feel like that’s particularly important because the city has a problem with the number of pools it has and they’re talking about spending all this money on spray parks,” Powers says. “Here’s a beach that’s functioning and being neglected.” In addition, the master plan calls for a pavilion and playground at the old Coes Knife Factory site, along with a multi-
use pathway. “We’re not looking to do it at the exclusion of these other fields,” Powers insists. The way Robert Moylan Jr., commissioner of Public Works and Parks, sees it, the new playable and rectangular field is an important step in meeting the needs of a large group of people. “This definitely addresses what young people and even older people want to play,” he says of the field, which will largely be used for rugby and other sports that have long been growing in popularity, like lacrosse and hurling. As for concerns that officials have been slow to implement a master plan, Moylan says, “The Coes Knife property will have some improvements done this year. Other improvements to the Coes Park property have been ongoing. We installed continued on page 6

a pathway last year. We understand there is a faction of some people that think we should spend more at Coes Knife and at the beach.” There are plenty of other people, Moylan continues, who see a need for more rectangular-shaped playing fields. Among them is James Gniadek, president of the Worcester Rugby Football Club. Players in the 35-year-old organization have spent years migrating between different city fields, he says, and have long been looking for a place to call home. “There is a massive need for fields in the city,” he says. “We practice in Auburn and shuffle our home games between Lake Park and Compton Park. You’re really limited to field space.” Worcester has plenty of programs targeting youths, Gniadek says, but precious few aimed specifically at adults. “You can’t ignore the adult base,” he says. Gniadek says the rugby club is ecstatic about the new field. “We’ve bounced around a lot,” he says. “We understand it. There’s a massive competition in the city for these fields.” At the same time, Gniadek adds, it is not “an in-your-face competition.” Powers says his neighborhood is not trying to run the rugby set out of town.

“It isn’t that we felt [the city] shouldn’t be looking at that field, but we have been concerned at the lack of progress on the master plan,” Powers says. In addition to wanting the city to address other areas around Coes, Powers and some residents express concern over the revised plan for the new K of C field. They have had discussions with city officials and Powers says he feels “confident that the original plan will be followed.” Among other things, the revised plan called for a basketball court to be moved closer to Botany Bay. It also did not include a woodland buffer between that community and the field. In addition to the K of C field, the city has plans for a “higher end” field

elsewhere in Worcester, although Moylan did not want to identify the location, yet. That field would be made with artificial turf, according to Moylan.
Police have been respectful, but firm in holding onto the video. Police Chief Gary Gemme, in a statement to Worcester Mag, says: “While we recognize the importance of working with the community, the decision to release information to the public is governed by investigative considerations and discretion.” Deputy Fire Chief Geoffrey Gardell, who says he has not seen the video, believes police offer a valid reason for not releasing the video. They say the footage is inconclusive and it is difficult to discern whether the individual in the video was lighting a fire or simply going through the trash looking for cans. Ksen says there could be cause to release the video if the bin was the scene of multiple fires, but Police Sgt. Kerry Hazelhurst says there were no other fires reported in that trash bin. That isn’t stopping people like Keefe from pressing the issue. Keefe wants to see a true cooperative effort in combating a serious problem. “We’d like to see [the video] as a community,” she says. “We think it’s really important to be transparent and see if there’s anything we recognize. If you’re really looking to possibly have even just a clue about who’s responsible, then let’s all look at this together.” While they don’t agree on whether to release the video, officials and residents are on the same page when it comes to tackling the issue of fires in the neighborhood. Police have designated it a Tactical Response Area (TRA) and the department’s Arson Task Force (ATF) has joined forces with the fire department to investigate the blazes, which have been deemed suspicious. In addition to a series of dumpster fires over the past several months, there have been five other fires in the Pleasant Street area since April 11. Most recently, there were three fires over one weekend, from Aug. 3-5. On Friday, Aug. 3, there was a fire at a vacant store at 325 Pleasant St. The next morning, Aug. 4, a fire broke out in a rooming house at 39-41 Irving St. Almost exactly 24 hours later on Sunday, Aug. 5, there was a fire at 115 Pleasant St. Police say they are working to obtain video surveillance for those fires. An officer from the Community Impact Division has also been designated to patrol the area and officers assigned to the Summer Impact Program will be patrolling the area, according to police. Keefe doesn’t think the efforts should stop there. “On our end,” she says, “we feel like there are lots of people you might recognize. You can often tell by what they wear, the way they walk. There are characteristics other than the face. We think it would be worthwhile to look at it.”

There was some good news attached to the not-so-good news of a collapsed sewer line last week, according to Robert Moylan, commissioner of Public Works and Parks. “From the standpoint of people’s service, there was no impact. That’s the ďŹ rst piece of good news.â€? What wasn’t immediately clear was how good or bad the news would be for motorists, especially with concerns that crews would have to dig into the line on the I-290 on-ramp to Belmont Street. According to Moylan, there was some optimism that digging would not have to be done and the ramp could remain open. The collapse happened Sunday. Hours later, early Monday morning, there was a water break off Holden Street. The cause was undetermined earlier this week, but the damage was severe: “The road is totally washed away,â€? Moylan says.

FIERY CONCERNS: After an uptick in
building ďŹ res two years ago in 2010, the number has been declining since. According to a report from Fire Chief Gerard Dio, there were 196 structure ďŹ res in 2010, 24 more than in 2009 when there were 172. In 2011, however, the number dipped to 189. So far in 2012, through Aug. 6, there have been 139 building ďŹ res. In all, over the past 10 years the city has had 2,415 building ďŹ res. The largest number of incidents was in 2003 when there were 391 reported structure ďŹ res. Since then, there have not been more than 240 in any one year. The news is also encouraging for outside ďŹ res, including dumpster and trash ďŹ res. So far in 2012, there have been 378 such ďŹ res. In 2011 there were 415 and in 2010 there were 448.

The Aug. 2 drills brought large, Blackhawk helicopters and several smaller ones to the area. Soldiers armed with weapons rappelled from the helicopters during the exercises, which were held near Worcester Memorial Auditorium in Lincoln Square. The operation startled residents like Russell Ulbrich, who expressed his concerns to councilors Tuesday night, saying: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Why are military exercises happening over our city and our children? This is not a playground for the military.â&#x20AC;? Konnie Lukes is more of a Democrat than Elizabeth Warren is an Indian Gary Rosen
W
orcester City Councilor Konnie Lukes is a registered Democrat, but not a Stepford Democrat. She believes in a two-party system and is not hesitant to support capable and qualified candidates who don’t have a D next to their name. But now, Lukes has become a television pitchwoman. And, depending on your political leanings, she has either the courage or audacity to make a television ad endorsing incumbent and moderate Republican, U.S. Sen. Scott Brown, in his tight race with liberal Democrat, Elizabeth Warren. As expected, many Democratic leaders and their labor union allies call Lukes a Democrat in name only. Some even suggest that her endorsement and ad will hurt Brown. But that just might be wishful thinking on their part. Simply titled “Konnie,” the 30-second TV ad, professionally shot in Lukes’ Worcester law office, is frequently airing all across the commonwealth. Forget Worcester where people have a love-hate relationship with Lukes. The ad is being seen in cities and towns where people have no knowledge of Konnie Lukes and her politics. And while voters seldom care when one politician endorses another, this particular ad is one that they might notice. What TV viewers see and hear is an articulate and accomplished woman endorsing a male over a female candidate in a race with national implications. Lukes clearly states that she is a city councilor, a former Worcester mayor and, even more important, a Democrat. In the ad, Lukes says, “I am impressed by Scott Brown’s independence and his ability to work with people on both sides of the aisle. I think we need more Scott Browns.” That burns several Worcester Dems who are working hard to help Warren wrestle the Kennedy seat away from Brown.
For years, local Democrats have branded Lukes a Republican. In fact, Lukes was banished from the Democratic city committee in 1998 after she supported Republican Gov. Lukes opposes blind party loyalty and says that the leaders of Worcester’s Democratic Party are too rigid and controlling. She proudly rattles off her liberal credentials--a former head of the Worcester chapter of the ACLU, a staff attorney for Legal Services, the first chair of the Worcester City Manager’s Commission on the Status of Women and a commissioner for the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination. That’s not exactly a Republican resume. But Lukes admits that her 30 years in elective office have made her more skeptical and independent in her political beliefs. She feels that too many elected officials at the state and national levels are self-serving. “The lack of cooperation and hostility between the two major parties often results in gridlock and pain for the American people”, she said. In her TV ad, she clearly praises Sen. Brown for his bipartisanship. I asked Lukes to state one major issue on which she disagrees with Scott Brown. She didn’t even pause before saying she is pro-choice. “I don’t agree with Brown on all issues, but I do hope that, with time, he’ll see how important the right to choose is for young women,” Lukes said. While many political pundits think that Konnie Lukes’ TV ad is a coup for Scott Brown, Democratic and labor union leaders disagree and dismiss it. But you just have to think that these leaders would be glad to have a prominent Republican become Elizabeth Warren’s pitchman—even if he is a Republican in name only.
Letter We’ll make you a star All of us who read Worcester Magazine are sad to see Jeremy Shulkin leave, but as a schoolteacher he will have much more influence on future students. I read his last Worcesteria column and it is fitting that his “We’ll Make You a Star” is about Councilor Konnie Lukes. Councilor Konnie Lukes might be registered as a Democrat but she is a Tea Party Republican. If she were a true Democrat she would have voted to support Representative Jim O’Day’s bill “An Act to Invest in our Communities.” Seven councilors supported it. It was reported in a [previous] Worcesteria column
that Konnie accused four retired schoolteachers, including myself of “thuggery” because we appeared briefly before a City Council meeting holding a sign “Where do you pay your excise tax?” when it was reported that other vehicles in her family were registered at the Cape. Our coalition had professional signs made and after we left, Konnie, who touts her ACLU employment, wanted to ban all banners from the City Council chamber. What ACLU employee would ever suggest banning a sign? Hopefully, Jeremy’s replacement will be as sharp as Jeremy was reporting the shenanigans of councilors like Konnie Lukes. Paul Bobkowski is considered among the finest wedding photographers in the city. So why is he chopping down trees for a living? “It’s decent wages,” says Bobkowski, who has been shooting photos for about 20 years. He says he still tries to shoot some weddings on the weekend, but having to work a fulltime job makes that difficult. “What would I ideally want to be doing? I’d be a photographer with a fulltime studio.”
Bobkowski is one of many longtime, traditional film photographers whose careers have either been sidelined permanently or significantly diminished as digital photography and ever-advancing technology create a whole new generation of shutterbugs. “Everybody with a nice camera thinks they’re a photographer and people will think they’re a professional,” says Bobkowski, who points to the economic downturn post-9/11 as the start of a decline in traditional photography. “A lot of people weren’t spending a lot on photos and everybody who had a camera thought they were a photographer.” With the emergence of cell phones and more advanced cameras and computer software, there has been less demand for professional photographers and even less need for processing labs. While a trip to the neighborhood lab or studio once was a must, now even the most inexperienced enthusiast can produce decent-quality photographs. Throw in digital apps and social media tools like Facebook, through which you can “share” your favorite shots, and what you have is a completely new age of photography – the digital age. Scrapbooks and family albums have largely been shelved for computer discs and memory sticks. Darkrooms are almost a relic. Digital photography even took its toll on Kodak, forcing the company that invented the digital camera, to file for bankruptcy earlier this year. Digital photography has put its

traditional partner on the ropes and landed some sharp shots, but can it deliver the knockout punch? Opinions vary, but there is evidence that, if not quite on the canvas, analog photography is standing on wobbly legs.
LOCAL BUSINESS PINCHED
A
s owners of Photographers Color Service (PCS), Patrick O’Toole and Joe Perra have been working with some of the area’s finest photographers for the past 22 years from their space in the back of the building at 10 Harvard St. More than a place to drop off negatives, over the years it became a welcoming haven where like-minded photographers could talk shop, share tricks of the trade or just shoot the breeze. On the last day of July, however, O’Toole and Perra processed their final order – a collection of 20 prints
for a 5-by-7-inch photo album. They were victims of both a flattened economy and a digital boom that took much of the work out of their hands. “It’s a lack of work, a lack of income,” says O’Toole. “We just can’t make a profit. Business has steadily declined since 1992. We’re lucky if we do 300 or 400 rolls of film a year. We used to do that in two days.” Consumers, he says, started buying digital cameras when they first came out. “By the time professional photographers were convinced to go digital, some customers were already on their third or fourth digital camera.” As digital cameras grow in popularity and users become more proficient with them, some have started looking beyond the recreational advantages and are seeing the potential of benefiting from them professionally. “More and more consumers started shooting weddings and calling themselves
photographers,” says O’Toole. “When a professional photographer shoots a wedding, he’s using a $4,000 or $8,000 camera. The consumer is using a $500 or $800 camera, but it’s still a pretty good camera and image. The customer doesn’t know the difference. To them, an image is an image.” Shrewsbury’s Henry Grampietro, another area photographer and longtime PCS customer, says the digital camera has convinced many people they can take quality photographs and not spend the money on a trained professional. “They’re willing to accept lesser quality,” says Grampietro.

with all the images on it. Much to the photographer’s chagrin, the happy couple is more likely to keep the disc and not even bother to have any images printed. Or they will download what they like and correct the photos themselves. Worse, they might order only a fraction of the images taken. “For wedding photographers,” says Perra, “the bottom has dropped out.” Kim Ramsdell shot her last wedding about 10 to 15 years ago. She and her husband, Charles Poole, own and operate Natural Color, a photo lab in Stoughton. It was one of the first labs to shift completely from optical to digital printing. Optical printing was the rage before computers and the digital age. Moviegoers might not have known it at the time, but when they watched “Star Wars” or “Indiana Jones” they were seeing the work of optical printers. “When I would photograph a wedding, I’d shoot 350 exposures,” says Ramsdell. “Those would have to be exposed perfectly. Expressions and lighting is what it was all about. Now you can have 5,000 images at one function. That creates a lack of respect for the file, for the negative, for every time you push the button. Now these guys just hold the shutter down and spend an enormous amount of time editing and throwing away junk.”

But when it comes to my business, to my livelihood, to the manner in which I put food on my table, my love/hate relationship with it really comes into play.” Strom started noticing she was practically giving away her digital files. Helpful tools like Facebook became an

espite their opinions, many traditional photographers bear no hard feelings toward digital cameras and the new wave of photographers. “We’re too old to be resentful,” Perra says. There remains, however, a love/hate relationship between some photographers and the digital age. Jessica Strom, an accomplished newborn and family portrait photographer in Kansas City, Mo., acknowledges as much on a blog on mcpactions.com, a site dedicated to photo editing. “I love how ‘digital’ has exploded the possibilities of all types of photography, how much

enemy as clients would use the “sneak peeks” Strom would post on her page as their profile pictures and almost never included those photos in their actual orders. The orders themselves were never as big as Strom had anticipated. The age of digital hasn’t brought all gloom and doom to the photography business. Even the traditionalists acknowledge many positive changes. In fact, even the things they dislike about
digital photography, like being able to dramatically alter an image, can also be appealing. “What I like is how you can manipulate the photo,” says Perra, who also notes you no longer have to spend time processing film. Bobkowski says one huge benefit is being able to see instantly what you just photographed. “There’s no waste,” he says. “What you see is what you get.” O’Toole admits he finds things to like

You used to need all this equipment, now you do it on a computer. That’s a big plus. You can restore a picture much easier now.” Instant gratification has given the photographer greater creative freedom, according to Mary Newman, professor of the Applied Arts Program at Quinsigamond Community College. “It is instant, no darkroom or film, and printing is easy,” says Newman. “One may immediately e-mail or place on the Internet. However, knowing how to take a good photo is another story. One must understand compositional principles. Personally, I had a small digital camera (Lumix) that I used while in India on a mobile hospital tour and was able to shoot photos and videos without making people continued on page 12

self-conscious, and was able to capture beautiful and poignant moments.” More recently, Newman says she was at a 10K race and a woman called out for anyone with a digital camera to catch her husband crossing the finish line in record time. “I caught him crossing the finish line on my cell phone and e-mailed it,” says Newman. “It was a great photo – from a cell phone.”
ADAPTING TO THE TIMES

s a professional photojournalist with Worcester Mag, Steven King’s equipment is higher end – and, of course, digital. He wouldn’t have it any other way. “I love it. Cameras are so much more intelligent than they used to be,” says King. “It’s made it so much easier to come back with a consistent product. Our job is photojournalism. We tell stories and this enables us to tell stories quicker.” King considers himself a photography traditionalist in that he practices no digital manipulation beyond cropping and slight exposure changes. He doesn’t see digital as having changed what photography means. “It is the same,” says King. “The means for getting the photograph has changed.” The digital age has also given a reprieve

{ coverstory } to those whose strengths didn’t lie in the darkroom. “I was never a superstar in the darkroom,” King admits. “Now, with the inception of digital cameras, everything is linked together. You shoot your photo and put it right on the computer to correct it. That saves a lot of time.” Just as King and other professionals have had to adapt their ways, so too have those in the photo business. And while PCS succumbed to the digital age, the news isn’t completely dire for local photography shops. L.B. Wheaton Camera & Supply at 259 Park Ave. has been in Worcester for 119 years, opening in downtown Worcester in 1893. It relocated to Lincoln Plaza in 1956 and has been at its current location since around 1996. President and owner Steve Pond has been with the company for 30 years and he knows that, had he not made some adjustments along the way, his shop could just as easily have suffered the same fate as PCS. “If I didn’t invest in the equipment at the time I did,” Pond says, “I might be in their shoes. There used to be 10 camera shops in Worcester, now there’s one. We’ve survived. We kept up with the changes.” Pond installed a digital lab last year, but he has not completely abandoned the traditional form. He still has a C-41 developer that processes 35mm color negative film.
IN THE DARK
T
here are, in fact, still darkrooms to be found – and traditional film photography is still taught and practiced. The Bancroft School here in Worcester still has a darkroom, as do
several area colleges, including Clark University, where two of the best in the business teach their trade. Stephen DiRado, a lecturer at Clark who specializes in black-and-white film photography, says many students attending the school for art do so because it has a darkroom. He believes teaching the analog method provides students a better understanding of how to build a good digital image. “Because of the limitations of film, and discipline needed to make a good black-and-white print, students have to think through a number of levels about their intentions— previsualize the resulting photograph,” says DiRado. “By the time they enroll in a digital class they adapt quickly to its set of technical standards. It is within our intermediate classes that we open the field for whatever camera or material is needed to best express one’s vision. Students can mix analog with digital freely, at this point it is all about the best tools to get the job done. “ DiRado’s colleague, Frank Armstrong, echoes his sentiments, saying time spent in the darkroom only enhances the understanding and appreciation of 20thcentury photographs. Armstrong does not see film photography going into the dark just yet. “While analog photography is diminished, it is not dead,” he says. “My guess is it will continue for a couple more decades. I strongly feel that learning the processes of analog photography put people in touch with how photographic images have been made essentially since photography had its beginnings.” Before they get to college, some area high school students have the opportunity to work in a darkroom. The Bancroft School and its art department
offer both traditional film and digital photography. As recently as last winter, one student won honorable mention at the Boston Globe Scholastic Art and Writing Awards show for her work with black-and-white film. Her teacher, Richard Dec, who heads the school’s art department, agrees with Armstrong that the traditional form of photography is not dead, but offers a caveat. “I have been to several training workshops and have had several instructors who said color film photography is dead,” Dec says. “Digital is much faster and easier and you’re not using any polluting chemicals. But there are still professional photographers doing black-and-white film. They still say you can’t get the quality of tone in digital that you can with film.” Dec believes digital has pretty much caught up with black-and-white photography and considers himself a true convert to the digital age, even though as a college student in the early 1970s he was exposed strictly to film. Despite falling in love with digital photography, Dec sees a benefit to teaching traditional film. “Our philosophy is to teach our lessons through art history,” he says, “and, of course, that includes film. What better way to teach all forms of photography than working in them?”
W
hether they favor the traditional or digital form, most photographers can agree on one thing: the art of photography should continue and new photographers should be encouraged. Just as today’s old-school photographers started somewhere, new camera bugs will emerge–maybe from schools like Bancroft and Clark University. They’ll just be learning some new tricks of a drastically changed trade. The key, according to Strom, is to learn the craft. “Starting a photography business seems easy enough and the inexperienced are doing just that at a record pace,” she says. “People will soon realize, though, that true photography isn’t the editing; it’s the shot you take in camera and unless you can nail that, you may as well call yourself a photoshopper, not a photographer. Take the time to learn your digital camera, to distinguish light and read histograms to determine exposure. Create images that look outstanding blown up to a 24-by30 canvas, not an itty bitty image on the computer that you may think looks amazing. You only realize how much or continued on page 14

little you’ve learned once it’s blown up and staring at you in the face.” Old style or new, the photographer should never stop learning, says DiRado. “Never forget what inspired you to pick up a camera,” he says. “If you go the art route, never stop working. Learn from all of your mistakes. And study the visual arts. Photography is not an exclusive
– and even though he knows that will likely cut into his earnings – Bobkowski isn’t about to pull an ego trip and tell the bride and groom no one else should be allow to take pictures. “I’m getting paid to shoot. If there are other people shooting, why should I tell the father of the bride he shouldn’t take a picture of his daughter? I would even tell them how to set up the camera.”

When the fledgling photographer finally does step out onto the stage, he or she shouldn’t be surprised if someone like Bobkowski is there to lend a helping hand. Like O’Toole and Perra, Bobkowski isn’t a digital hater. Even when he is out shooting a wedding and several other people are snapping photos with their pocket cameras and cell phones and iPods

he question remains: Has the digital age scored a knockout punch against traditional film photography? By virtue of the fact that there remain an army of dedicated photographers outfitted with old-fashioned film cameras – and
the fact that students still flock to high school and college darkrooms – it seems premature to write up an obituary. But people like Strom see it as inevitable. “There will come a time in the near future where it’s next to impossible to find a place to buy film let alone develop it,” she says. “The world is in a state of instant gratitude and isn’t stopping. Even kids barely able to speak want to see their picture on the back of the camera as soon as it’s taken.” Strom’s opinion doesn’t have a lot of company on the local camera scene. O’Toole, for one, thinks there will always be a place for the hard copy of a photograph. “I don’t think it’s going to die,” he says. “There are still people that value the photograph.” Armstrong, too, is not ready to sound the death knell. “In some ways,” he says, “asking that question is like asking will oil painting die off just because acrylics came along. I see them existing side-by-side for some years to come.” DiRado is even more emphatic. There is, he says, a counter-culture of youngsters who have taken to older cameras. And there are still enough people who don’t want to live life in the fast lane. Traditional photography, says DiRado, will be around for a while. “It is alive and well within groups of artists who want to slow down,” he says. “Hipsters seem to have found it to be part of their identity. I have never seen so many teens and 20-somethings on the street as in recent times carrying around 35mm cameras. These are the same people signing up for our analog classes at Clark. Ten years ago people ran up to me on the streets, mocking me for still carrying around such a beast of a camera – 40 pounds of bellows, film holders, lens and tripod. Now, people stop me in awe to inquire about the camera. I am very amused by it all. Analog is here to stay for some time to come as an ‘art thing.’ Free from the stress and expectations that digital covers all so well in the commercial world.”

In June 2011, they moved into the location that they’re in now—“the biggest photo studio in New England—and got a lot of members to be a part of it.” “Ten-thousand square feet of fun; we can’t find anyone bigger on the eastern seaboard,” says Hendrickson,” noting that the studio rosters approximately 300 photographers with specializations that cover the gamut of shooting needs from product shooting to modeling to live events, like concerts and weddings, indoor and outdoor, micro and macro… . Well, you get the idea. “Originally,” Sullivan says, Worcester Photo Studios was “just a place to share space,” but it “has now become sort of the focal point for photography for the whole area.” The studio consists of, among other things, a series of “product shooting rooms and a darkroom,” adds Hendrickson, who says that they’re “also going to be building a cyclorama,” a popular type of shooting area where “the wall meets the floor in a nice slow curve, so it looks like a permanent backdrop” with no shadows demarking the wall-floor junction.

Ah! The entrepreneurial spirit! And when that spirit includes artistic sensibilities – even better. Add community-minded spirit - awesome! This trifecta, I’m happy to say, underpins a number of businesses that help make Worcester a colorful and friendly scene. Patrick Sullivan and Mike Hendrickson are newer entrants into this growing Worcester milieu. Together they run the Worcester Photo Studios, a solid, grassroots business plan that embraces an elaborate nexus of local groups of various political, social and artistic endeavors. Housed in an inauspicious former factory at 90 May St., the Worcester Photo Studios is neither E.B. Luce nor Fotomat. What they’ve built is a comprehensive go-to for all things photographic. Are you a photographer, or a model in need of a portfolio or some experience? Come on in! Are you a photographer looking to build a roster of models? Come on in! Are you in a band that needs promo shots? Come on in! A hair stylist or makeup designer looking to get into weddings or model shoots? Come on in! Want to learn the ABC’s of photography in a classroom setting? Well, you get the idea. “The original point,” says Sullivan, was after graduating from Assabet Valley Technical School in Marlborough about a decade ago, he and Hendrickson wanted to couple their photography talents and descend upon the wedding market. To do so, they needed a studio, but studio space is expensive. One thing led to another, explains Sullivan, and “it worked out that it made sense to get a bigger place with members to help delineate the costs between everybody.”

Jeff Royds, NEGB1 creator and program director, started small. In 2007, his small iWeb site, then called Boston Garage Bands, served simply as a space where he could post interviews with musicians from Massachusetts. Three years later, after a boom in popularity, the name was changed to New England Garage Bands to better describe the audience it served and the small venture became a fullblown cyber radio station with a social networking portal where musicians, venues and fans can create and maintain their own profiles. This year, Royds and his crew—his wife, Cassandra, and Ray Auger of the band Whiskey Bent— shortened the name to NEGB and with another bout of success, grew its music foundation to satisfy fans internationally. For Royds, to offer an arena for young, unknown talent to be heard was a top priority. Once an intern for alternative Boston radio station WFNX, Royds

Sitting in traffic, as you mull over your listening options, you probably find yourself flipping through station after station, each playing the same Top 40 hits. Where can you turn when you want to hear something new, raw or different? That’s when you scan to NEGB1, formerly called New England Garage Band. Instead of replaying the popular artists, NEGB1 dedicates its entire broadcast to unsigned talent from both local and international musicians. Gathering these undiscovered stars, NEGB1 will host its second annual Under 21 Battle of the Bands featuring groups such as Hudlin, Awesome Express, Blackwell, Sasha Yatcheko, 3MF, Limelight and Novation this Saturday at The Raven in Worcester.
developed his passion for discovering new music. “There is so much great talent that will go unnoticed unless there is a central place for them to be discovered,” explains Royds, noting that it’s difficult enough for lesser known bands to book gigs when they are of legal age to be at clubs; but it is even more difficult for younger musicians. For those thirsting for real advice on how to make it big, participating in the Battle of the Bands is a step in the right direction. “Our judges are working musicians, promoters and music professionals who are looking to break out as well and want to share their knowledge of what they’ve seen work, doesn’t work and should never be done again,” says Royds. Even for the judges, the Battle of the Bands is a learning experience. Despite being in competition with each other, the younger-than-21 talent support their fellow musicians; it’s not unlike them to offer to loan their own gear to bands that have forgotten something or found a piece broken. Royds notes, “Older musicians can learn a lot from these kids. They don’t just play their set and then leave... These kids are right up at the front of the stage, rooting on the other bands and musicians like they were watching their friends’ bands.” The maturity and showmanship of the younger musicians leaves an impression on even seasoned music professionals. For the local musicians and bands residing in the Worcester area, they are fortunate to be surrounded by a community budding with talent and passionate music lovers. “Worcester has always been a great and supportive place for a musician to build its roots,” says Royds. Though many clubs do not allow young talent to perform at their venues as they are under the legal drinking age, some Worcester clubs recognize the requisite for young bands to have a spot to play and allow all-ages shows. Royds hopes that with the second-annual Under 21 Battle of the Bands, the audience can witness the remarkable talent of these fresh musicians. “For 16-year-olds, some of these kids can write and play their butts off. I would put some of these kids on stage against some older bands and they would stand toe-to-toe musically,” Royds asserts. NEGB1’s second annual Battle of the Bands will take place Saturday, Aug. 18, starting at 2 p.m. and goes until the winner is crowned at 6 p.m. For more information, visit NEGB1 at negb1.com.

Hendrickson says the building is also available for rental for use as an art gallery or for events like “yoga demonstrations or even a book club.” VegWorcester and the Free School are two nonprofits that have made use of the space recently, they say. “We’re interested in art, community-type things,” says Sullivan. “We’re not trying to use it as a giant profit center and stick anybody in it for anything. We want to keep it somewhat oriented to sort of what we do.” By extension, the Worcester Photo Studio takes part in the global initiative called Help Portrait, which “helps less fortunate people acquire a Christmas/ holiday portrait.” The ambitious project, which will take place on Saturday, Dec. 8 at the South High School gym, provides a series of booths equipped with photographers and a staff of stylists, whereby – for no cost – an individual, couple, or family can show up, have a portrait taken, and “walk out with a print in your hand, in a paper frame, and the digital file,” according to Sullivan. Like the laid-back approach to their own studio, Hendrickson says they feel that the Help Portrait session “shouldn’t be a scary experience for anyone. For $20, models can work with up to 60 or 70 photographers and leave with photos from each one. “It’s a great stepping stone for everyone,” says Hendrickson. “We’ve had girls go on to get some great modeling contracts. One of them is even in Tokyo right now.” “We actually have three girls who have ended up going on to great modeling careers after they never did modeling in their life until they came to one of our events,” adds Sullivan. And for $40, photographers get to develop skills, meet models and stylists, and generate work, all in a laid-back atmosphere, where, unlike similar shoots that Hendrickson and Sullivan once attended, you can touch the equipment, shoot at your desired settings, and, essentially eschew the assembly-line method favored by other studios. Best of all, you can meet and talk the craft with photographers from all over. “There are people who come and don’t ever take pictures. They want to see what’s going on. They say, ‘Oh, Hey! How did you do that?’” says Sullivan. Photographers, Hendrickson says, can be found trading lenses and sharing cameras. According to Sullivan, this way of conducting business has made the studio a destination for models and photographers, many of whom arrive from places like Maine, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire; likewise the events have become very popular with hair and makeup artists. “We have five girls that drive from Biddeford, Maine, every month,” says Sullivan.

Mmmmm, breakfast. I love a good breakfast, even when I’m cooking a big one at home, but sometimes it just tastes better when someone else does the cooking and cleaning. That was the plan I had one early Monday morning while getting ready for work. I called up Maude for a breakfast date and off we went. I was long-overdue for a meal at Lou Roc’s. Normally when I do go, it’s on a weekend, and it’s packed. But going on a weekday morning at 6:30 meant no line, no waiting. We walked right in and took a seat. The woman behind the counter had a playful banter going with the five or six patrons that were already underway with breakfast. She took our drink order of two teas and an orange juice, and was back in no time. Maude decided to keep it simple with a grilled bagel, home fries and a side of bacon. Mmmmm, bacon. Now I needed bacon to go along with my broccoli and cheese omelet. The banter continued in the background. The regulars and the woman behind the counter who they called “Dawn” were having a grand old time joking around, but not once did she miss a

beat with us tucked in the corner. I glanced around at all the old photos and signs, but before I knew it, our food was being served. My omelet was presented alongside a bed of home fries and big, thick slices of Italian toast. My “extra-crispy” bacon served on a separate plate smelled delicious. Both servings of bacon were done to our liking, Maude’s a little less crispy than my order. The home fries were bite-size and seasoned well, with a little crisp to the edge. Maude’s grilled bagel looked fantastic too, but I had to dive into my omelet. The broccoli was cooked right and there was just enough cheese without being over-powering. The three eggs that it was all folding into were nice
and fluffy. After being close to finishing my omelet, some toast, most of the bacon and a portion of the home fries, I had to call it quits. Maude made it through her bagel, bacon and some of the home fries, but between the two of us, we had enough home fries left to bring almost a whole order home. Without even having to ask, Dawn appeared with a to-go box and our check that topped off at $30 with tip. I was slightly disappointed that I had to leave to get to work, with the witty conversation continuing that made Maude and I laugh, but after the breakfast we just had, we knew it was only a matter of time before we returned to enjoy Lou Roc’s again.

While it’s not meant to be a drinkable frozen treat, the layered gelati at CoCo’s Tropical Ice in Auburn, serves up a refreshing and unique flavor. For the chill seekers, the little store offers Italian ice, soft-serve ice cream and one of its concoctions, the “gelati,” layers the smooth, flavored ice with soft serve. I tried the top choice of mango and vanilla, which was divine. It’s like a mango creamsicle in a cup. The shaved ice had consistently smooth crystals, which let it meld nicely with the creamy vanilla soft serve. Another frequent favorite is the “Banana Split,” which layers banana ice, vanilla ice cream, strawberry ice and chocolate ice cream—it’s an excellent mix offering the great flavor and a lower level of caloric guilt compared to the sundae. Any day can bring different items to the menu, and often, new flavors are created by the customers—and updated on CoCo’s popular Facebook page. Two minutes with... Christy McCullough has not lived here her whole life, but she hearts Worcester. After moving from Rochester, N.Y., almost 30 years ago, Worcester is where she and her three children reside and where she became the general manger of Solid Gold Bomb Printing. McCullough and everyone else at Solid Gold Bomb are showing their Worcester community spirit by printing up lots of “I ♥ Worcester” t-shirts and even giving away 100 free shirts each day throughout July and August. When we heard, we just had to get down to grab our free shirts and ask McCullough some questions about the I ♥ Worcester campaign and the message they are trying to spread. Where are you from? Originally from Rochester, NY, but moved close to Worcester 30 years ago.
Tell us a little about your family. I have three children, one girl and two boys. We have all utilized the city in different ways.
Tell us about the I ♥ Worcester campaign. The I ♥ Worcester campaign was envisioned by the t-shirt printing team at 218 Shrewsbury St. in Worcester. With the company’s prominent position nestled in the heart of restaurant row, we thought it would be a great way to spread the “Heart of the Commonwealth” mantra and promote Worcester as a cultural arts and community center. The initiative’s goal is to foster community involvement and participation amongst individuals, groups, clubs, organizations and small businesses who call Woo Town their home.

Why do you ♥ Worcester? I ♥ Worcester because of the variety within the city; from the many colleges to the world-renowned hospitals, as well as the many cultural venues and history. There is a bond that holds people to this city. What company is the sponsor of the t-shirt giveaway? Solid Gold Bomb, which is run in the same venue, printed all the shirts needed for the campaign. They can be reached Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 508-926-8517.
How are you related to this company? I became a part of the Solid Gold Bomb team in April of 2011 as general manager. It has been a busy job from the start, but we have a great team, and it has been great fun.
How did you get involved in the campaign? The I ♥ Worcester campaign was thought up at the Solid Gold Bomb office. We all took part
