ello, holidays. And hello, apathetic teenaged cashiers. Do you mind if I tear you away from your rampant texting for just one second here and ask you for some assistance? Sometimes it’s hard for the holiday spirit to stand up to the cold and vast frontier of a shopping mall, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Free gift wrapping, customization and other special holiday extras accompanied by service with a smile wait around every corner…if you know where to look for it. A good place to start is C.C. Lowell, (Park Ave., Worcester) which spans all levels of creativity from finger paint on construction paper to oil paints on canvas, and thanks to its staff of artists, choosing between the two is not a guessing game. They’ll even create the “full package” and wrap it up for free. “We will create custom art sets for any age,” manager Kristen Sciascia says. “Let us know the age of the recipient, what they like to do, and we can tailor a gift specifically for them. If you have a budget, we can definitely work with that, too.” The merchandise at That’s Entertainment (Park Ave., Worcester and John Fitch Highway, Fitchburg) can be even trickier to decipher than the full walls of paint brushes at C.C. Lowell. Marketing manager Evan Scola explains that this is the reasoning behind its yearly gift registry, which can be filled out in-store and kept

on file for less avid comicbook-reading relatives to access. “Sometimes [customers] will want absolutely something specific, so we’re able to show [relatives of] those people exactly what it is if they may not fully understand comic or video-game collecting,” he says. “And some people fill out their gift registries, and they don’t really expect anyone to use them, so we always hear great stories about people being really surprised that they’ve actually gotten something.” Scola says this system takes some of the awkwardness out of asking a loved one straight out for exactly what you want and avoids the guilt of feigning excitement upon opening a disappointing gift. “People always feel bad when people spend a lot of money on something they don’t want or need,” he says. “Plus it’s one way to show the collecting side to friends and families who come in.” At this juncture, the That’s Entertainment crew feels their gift-wrapping skills would be more of a punishment than a reward for customers, but Classic Toy Shop (Park Ave., Worcester) owner Betsy Madson does enough ribbon-swirled, tissue-papered, shiny, colorful wrapping for the both of them. “I would say that our gift wrapping is the very big thing here that sets us aside for everybody,” she says. “It’s free [for gifts] over $15 and is quite different from what you’d expect. It’s really an old-fashioned gift wrapping; we are literally quite famous for our gift wrapping.”
But this is only the end result. First, you have to acquire the funds to purchase this gift; if paying all at once is not an option, the shop offers free layaway. Then, you have to choose the gift. Stuck on that, too? Help is on the way. “We have in the store a series of little pockets where we keep papers specific to one age, and we list about 20 different [item] choices for each age, ‘perfect for one year,’ ‘perfect for two years…’ So the person who comes in who doesn’t have any ideas, and if we’re not available to help them, they can just grab a paper and go on with their shopping,” Madson says. As far as gifts for all ages, try Artworks (Park Ave., Worcester) for clever cards, playful purses and fantastical frames. They’ve already set out their holiday batch
of goodies. “We’ve got some adorable little figures made by Lori Mitchell, and they’re all sort of table-top size. There are little Santas and angels and elves, and those are really our best sellers,” says owner Jane Morgan. Plus free parking and gift wrapping, of course. Dzian Gallery (Water St., Worcester) will give that artful, personal touch to a gift as well with several collections of handmade goods. Co-owner David Papazian says the gallery is great “if you’re looking for handcrafted artisan jewelry, scarves, pottery, for one of a kind gifts; we have stuff you’re not going to get at T.J. Maxx.” Again, the gift wrapping is complimentary. Other shops in Worcester continued on page 7

is the season for online shopping. Let’s face it. In this harried world, online shopping is the bomb. It’s so easy and convenient, and while there are certainly enough ways and places to shop online, there are two facts that often give holiday shoppers hesitation over the final mouse click— financial security, and for those last-minute shoppers, the promptness of delivery. Let’s work through a few ways to get the gifts you need when you need them, while keeping a firm hold on your wallet.
’
your credit-card number and identity thieves. According to TRUSTe.com, “To verify these seals’ authenticity you should always click on them and see that the verification page is hosted by the respective company. For example, if you click on a TRUSTe seal and the site that pops up begins with anything other than ‘http:// www.truste.com,’ you know it’s a fake.” That means that “trust-e.com” and “trustemain.com” are both fakes, although they appear real. Through a practice called “phishing,” disguised thirdparty sites like these will
often send emails asking for verification on your password personal information. Most legitimate Web sites will never do this, so be wary of any requests of this nature.
Search Party On a lighter note, get to the bottom of the pricing game by using comparative search-engine shopping sites like Shopzilla.com or Google Product Search (formerly Froogle) under the “shopping” tab on Google’s main page. Shopzilla sorts results by popularity or continued on page 10

Safety First The disclaimer for all Internet activity is that the safety of your information can never be 100 percent guaranteed. There will always be hackers ruining people’s lives. One way to purchase securely is to get a credit card to use only for online transactions and refrain from using a debit card for online purchases because this number is attached to money you already have. Companies like VeriSign, TRUSTe and McAfee will display their Web privacy seals on Web sites that use their services to perform regular security checks and encrypt (encode) the data on these sites, providing an extra layer of security between

The world’s largest craft fair exists at Etsy.com, where you can access more than 400,000 sellers worldwide with individual “shops” on the Web site selling items ranging from custom wedding dresses and vintage furniture to cheeky stationary and bangle bracelets, all handmade. Each vendor is held accountable to quality products and reliable service by feedback from each of their past customers.
“Also check their policies section for shipping and return info,” says Etsy press manager Adam Brown. “One great way to make shopping easier is to sign up for Etsy’s themed-shopping e-mails, which you can do from our home page.” Brown recommends browsing the treasury section where Etsy members curate their own “gallery” of items with a theme that can be as specific as a color, animal or season or a more vague feeling or idea that can help get your own creative gift-giving juices flowing. For a more structured approach, shop the entire site by color, item (handbag, art print, etc.), most recently listed, or price. “We also have a great tool called Shop Local that you can use to support local artists,” says Brown. “I was able to use the Shop Local tool to get a great pair of earrings

for my mom last Mother’s Day. She lives in California, and I found an Etsy seller that lives nearby. I had to do it very last minute, since I had forgotten that Mother’s Day was coming up. I contacted the seller, and they worked with me to make sure they got there on time. She loved them. You must be registered for Etsy, which is free and will not get you spammed, to make a purchase. Most vendors prefer PayPal transactions, which require a PayPal account (also free). “PayPal is an established and accredited payment company, ensures Brown. “It’s the industry standard for online payments. To go the opposite route, Bestbuy.com has gifts that will suit just about anyone. “Back in the day, [technological items] were only for business people, says Dedham Best Buy store manager Howard Davenport. “Now you have couples that want to sit there at the kitchen counter and read the news, and they’ll use the iPad instead of firing up the computer. The Nintendo Wii, they have them in the nursing homes, can you believe that? I mean, the [Wii] bowling, tennis, badminton, that’s all for all age groups. The search feature and products tab that lists different categories of items (TVs,
DVDs, etc.) make it easy to quickly narrow your search, and every listing is complete with product specs. “Customers still use Consumer Reports all the time, and then also on our Web site, we do have products that are rated by our customers, says Davenport. “If you have a lot of questions you can call us here at the store. These are associates here for the customers, not to sell you everything under the sun; there’s no commission. He notes that in-store
pick-up can guarantee you a gift up until the day before you need it. For New England outdoorsy, the big name is obviously L.L. Bean, and although you may have grown up with its catalog on your coffee table, its Web site is an invaluable resource. “It’s organized logically making it easy to find things, says public affairs manager Carolyn Beem. “You can search for specifics; for example, if you only want something in blue, you can find everything blue available in your size.

Dreaming of a ‘green’ holiday (ARA) t might feel like the holiday season is still eons away, but think again. Do you have your decorating, entertaining and gifting plans in place? If you’re looking for ideas and inspiration, why not think green this year? This isn’t just about holiday garlands, trees and wreaths. This is the eco-friendly and sustainable kind of green. And keep in mind that going green for the holidays doesn’t mean being boring - you can incorporate all the glitz and glam of the season and still help the environment. Here’s how:
I
Eco-friendly fresh face If you’re looking to perk up tired rooms before holiday guests arrive, nothing changes the look of a space more dramatically and cost effectively than a fresh coat (and color) of wall paint. Dutch Boy’s no-VOC Refresh Interior Latex paint ďŹ ts the eco-friendly bill without sacriďŹ cing
quality, an extremely important beneďŹ t. It even goes one step further - thanks to its innovative formulation featuring exclusive Arm & Hammer odor-reducing technology, captures, removes and locks common household airborne odors into the paint’s ďŹ lm. Rest assured, it will keep your house smelling fresh throughout the holiday season and beyond.
Twinkling lights Forget the old, energy-hogging incandescent indoor and outdoor holiday lights. Think LED instead. Strands made from light-emitting diodes are up to 90 percent more efďŹ cient than traditional holiday lighting. According to the Department of Energy, the best white LEDs have been found to have a useful life of about 35,000 hours, or four years, of continuous operation. What’s even better: You won’t face the trauma of an entire strand blowing if one bulb dies. On LEDs, when
one light goes out on a string, the others stay lit.
Sustainable sentiments Americans purchase seven million greeting cards each year. Out of seasonal card sales, which account for half of total sales, 60 percent of these cards are Christmas cards. Imagine the number of trees it takes to produce that many cards each year, not to mention how much waste reaches landďŹ lls when the cards get tossed. Send cards printed on recyclable paper with eco-friendly inks instead of traditional cards. Or better yet, take the plunge and embrace electronic greetings: send your holiday wishes to friends and family via the Internet.  While old-school Emily Post-types might not quite approve of this method just yet, your environmentally minded loved ones will thank you - and so will our forests. continued on page 18

The option to add an ecofriendly twist to holiday gifts is on its way to becoming limitless. With so many environmentally friendly products on the market, it’s easy to find a gift that’s thoughtful, useful and sustainable. If you do decide to buy gifts at a bricks-and-mortar store, why not consider buying local and visit that charming boutique you keep saying you want to check out? Most of the time, these shops carry items from local vendors. They also tend to offer many handmade and/or eco-friendly products. Shopping local keeps money in your community and keeps small business owners thriving. Another option is to make your own gifts - knit a scarf, bead a bracelet, bake a batch of goodies, get crafty with
found items around your house. If you’re not creative, there are plenty of websites where you can buy handmade items from artisans in the United States or even abroad (be sure to look for fair-trade websites, if you buy from overseas, particularly from developing countries). If you decide to completely go green and skip material gifts completely, give one from the heart by making a donation of your time and money in honor of the recipients at their favorite charities where many people can benefit from your generosity. It’s not hard to make even small changes and go green for the holidays. By doing so, you’ll be helping the environment and still be able to deck those halls in style. The two no longer are mutually exclusive. It truly is possible to make your holidays both sustainable and spectacular.

New twists on everyday spices for the holidays
A (ARA) -
s Americans increasingly seek healthier holiday eating habits while dealing with tighter budgets, cooking and eating at home become more attractive than ever. If you’re an at-home cook looking for an easy way to expand your culinary horizons for a holiday get-together or gathering, try creating some new taste sensations in familiar dishes by using new versions of your favorite spices to liven up family favorites. Here are some ideas from the spice experts at Frontier Natural Products Co-op for more flavorful and interesting versions to everyday spices: Cinnamon is an especially popular spice that comes from the bark of an evergreen tree. For an even sweeter seasoning, try Vietnamese cinnamon. Compared to the more familiar Indonesian types,
Vietnamese cinnamon has a distinctly sweet flavor and exceptionally high volatile oil content, the key flavor component. Gourmet cooks rate it as the highest-quality cinnamon in the world. Try using it in everything from oatmeal and baked goods to desserts, beverages and savory dishes. If you’re a daring lover of heat in your food, you’ve learned the ways of cayenne. Cayenne adds color and flavor to Southwestern salsas, Indian chutneys, Thai curries, Mexican enchiladas, Chinese stir-fries, Texan chili con carne, Cajun hot sauce and many other recipes. But for a smokier flavor, try chipotle peppers, which are actually dried, smoked jalapeno peppers. Their smoky-sweet flavor is often used in Southwestern and Mexican dishes. Add a dash to liven up everything from chili to barbecued fare. Freshly ground black pepper is popular
in a wide variety of foods, works well in combination with other herbs and spices and is commonly found in spice blends. To change things up, try using Sichuan (Szechuan) pepper instead of black pepper to add an exotic twist to recipes. Gourmet Sichuan pepper is grown in China and offers an unusual, pungent flavor that begins as warm and lemon-like with woodsy overtones and finishes with a more intense bite. It intensifies the flavor of fish, poultry, cheese and vegetables. You’ve probably been using vanilla extract to flavor all kinds of desserts, beverages and other dishes. One way to ramp up the flavor is to switch to vanilla beans instead of using the liquid extract. Simply substitute one vanilla bean for each teaspoon of extract, cooking it with the liquid used in the recipe and then continued on page 20

removing it. The most common type of vanilla, Bourbon vanilla beans, are grown in Madagascar and are very aromatic with a full, rich taste. But to bump up the flavor, try Papua New Guinea vanilla beans, cultivated in the lowlands of the Pacific Basin. They have a fruitier taste than that of the Bourbon beans, with some notes of cherry that add a deep, long-lasting flavor to ice creams, frosting and many beverages. Nutmeg is the dried seed of the fruit of an evergreen tree, which most often comes in ground form. However, nutmeg, like many spices, loses both flavor and aroma after it is ground. Instead, buy whole nutmeg and grind it yourself using a special nutmeg grater or a fine grater, producing a more robust and fresh flavor. Warm and sweet, nutmeg adds depth to desserts, cheeses, savory dishes and a variety of vegetables. Don’t forget to sprinkle it on eggnog, mulled wines and punches. Mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes are delicious with a light dusting of nutmeg, too. With just a few simple substitutions like these, you can go beyond the everyday
