The silver screen under the night’s sky JOSHUA LYFORD Summer means something a little different to everyone, but we can all agree that it’s better than shoveling your driveway midwinter. Regardless of what your summerspecific favorite activity is, there are a few standbys – taking a trip to the beach, camping and catching a flick at a drive-in theater. Unfortunately, drive-ins are not quite as commonplace as they were years ago. Luckily for Central Massachusetts, we are not totally bereft of awesome options and with the Phantom Gourmet’s
Dan, Dave and Mike Andleman’s recent acquisition of the Mendon Twin Drive-In, our options keep getting better. There was a time in history when there were 6,000 operational drive-in movie theaters across the nation, but that number has since dwindled to around 300. Somehow, the Mendon Twin managed to survive – and thrive – and will soon celebrate its 60th year running. The drivein’s longevity is not just coincidence and the Andelmans are making sure to keep the entertainment as fresh and fun as possible. “We’ve been going there for so many years,” says Mike Andelman of the

Mendon Twin Drive-In, “and as we started to have our own kids, and have that similar experience with our kids, we realized what a magical place it was.” For more than two decades, the drive-in was owned and operated by Sue Swanson and Kathy Gorman. Now under new ownership, the Andelmans say they will continue utilizing the former owners’ knowledge and expertise. “They put their heart and soul into this drive-in” says Mike Andelman of Swanson and Gorman. “They put their heart and soul into this for 28 years, now they’re teaching us the business.” The Mendon Twin has two digital projection screens offering double-features of the latest films. The drive-in has all the standards: a retro ’50s snack bar, a 16-acre property to cruise your vehicle on to and enjoy the movies from your seat and admission is bargain priced at $25 per car. Moviegoers can expect something a little different, too, with award-winning Mexican cuisine and special events. On Saturday, June 19 the drive-in will present a live-streaming performance by Jimmy Buffet, who will be playing at the Coyote Drive-In in Fort Worth, Texas. In Mendon, bands will perform at the drivein before the main event and a portion of the proceeds will go toward keeping driveins alive. In October, the Andelmans will host weekly double-feature horror movie nights. Mike Andelman believes that the nostalgic feel of drive-in theaters is what makes it such a unique experience and

what keeps people coming back. “One of my friends from Los Angeles said, ‘it’s one of those things that is so uncool that it’s cool,’” he recalls. “To us, this drive-in is the Fenway Park of drive-in theaters. How many things did my grandfather take my father to do, my father took me, and now I’m taking my son. Four generations have now been to the Mendon Twin Drive-In.” Be sure to check out the Mendon Twin Drive-In this summer at 35 Milford St. in Mendon, open rain or shine and enjoy some great entertainment from the comfort of your own car. Visit mendondrivein.com for movie times and Jimmy Buffett tickets. “The Mendon Twin Drive-In really belongs to the people,” says Mike Andelman. “We are just the custodians of it.”

Grab-and-go barbecue goods CORLYN VOORHEES Summer is here and it is time to break out those grills and outdoor furniture that have been tucked away all winter. The warmer weather kick starts an endless array of STEVEN KING parties and barbecues, where you get to enjoy not only the company of your friends and family, but delicious food as well. The main question is, what do you bring? If you are in a rush and need to stop somewhere on the way, you don’t have time to call ahead or even whip up a dish yourself. Look no further, Worcester Magazine is here to help you find places that offer tasty, on-the-go food that will really make an impression on your host and fellow guests. The first stop is Ed Hyder’s Mediterranean Marketplace, located at 408 Pleasant St. in Worcester, which sells an array of Mediterranean cuisine. Ed Hyder, the owner of the market, says many of his products are “things [customers] can just grab and go and bring it to the grilling section of the barbecue or the snacking section.” If a customer is in a rush, Hyder suggests taking a trip around the appetizer section that offers a variety of different dips, crackers, hummus and cheese wedges. Hyder’s market also offers salads and pasta salads by the pound, with vegetarian and vegan options, and pre-made kebobs.

“I really love our lamb kebobs,” he says. “That’s my prime thing.” Along with their food, customers can pick up a bottle of wine at Ed Hyder’s. “We’re known for our Bordeaux selection," he says. “Anyone on the staff will help match wine to whatever you’re buying.” Stop number two is Fairway Beef Co., located at 48 Grafton St. in Worcester. Fairway has been in business for 68 years and carries a wide range of products, from meats to produce to household goods such as shampoo and candles. You can even get a plastic party bowl or chip and dip tray for under a dollar. According to owner George Sigel, their No. 1 item is hands down their honeymoon steaks. “In my particular store, we’re known for honeymoon steaks,” says Sigel. “We got a goldmine with that. It’s a wonderful steak.” Sigel also has some grilling tips up his sleeve. “Get the grill really hot. If you’re cooking a steak, get it extremely hot and then put the meat on rather than put it on cold. Sear both sides real fast and then bring the temperature down,” he says. “What you’re doing is sealing the juices inside the steak.” The next stop is Weepin’ Willies, with two locations at 160 Boston Tnpk. in Shrewsbury and 64 Auburn St. in Auburn. Accompanying the standard hot dogs and hamburgers in the store are ground beef, ground turkey, marinated chicken and other types of meat, as well as fresh-cut steaks every week. “Everything in my raw meat case is ready to go to bring to a barbecue,” says Ben Salluce, one of the owners at the Shrewsbury location. Weepin’ Willies' lunch menu boasts ready-made salads and pasta salads available every day and a popular item is the premade kabobs, consisting of beef or chicken, says Salluce. “You can just bring them and throw them on the grill,” Salluce says. “People really like them. They’re usually the No. 1 item this time of year.” The final stop is Emerald Meats, located at 347 Chandler St. in Worcester, which offers an assortment of ready-to-cook meat and prepared salads. Owner Joan Culbert, who started the business with her husband Robert, suggests the Idaho Potato Salad, made up of bacon, cheddar and scallions. “It’s kind of like potato skins,” she says. “It’s delicious.” Emerald Meats also offers various gourmet cheese spreads that Culbert describes as “kind of famous around Worcester,” which quickly sell out during the holidays. As for her favorite item at the store, Culbert has to go with the steak tips. “Every time we have a party or cookout, I’ll cook up a ton of them,” she says. “It’s a nice sweet marinate, kind of like a barbecue-teriyaki combination.” So the next time you are on your way to a barbecue or party and need to pick up some food, step away from the usual bag of chips and stop at one of these locations to grab something that will really impress the guests, not to mention your grateful host.
