COLLEGE SURVIVAL GUIDE

A collegiate welcome SURVIVAL TIPS FROM WORCESTER STUDENTS Brigit Catalanotti will be a senior at Assumption College this year and before the school year has even started, is already mourning its passing. “I’m sad to go into my last year of school. I feel like I just graduated high school,” says Catalanotti, who grew up in Grafton. Catalanotti’s situation is not unlike many Worcester college students; she grew up nearby, and was hesitant about going to a school so close to home. But after going to Assumption for three years, Catalanotti says, “I sometimes forget I’m in the city of Worcester.”

Lauren McShane

When late August hovers over Worcester, it brings with it a new species of Worcesterite. Suddenly we are surrounded by young, ambitious proto-apes sent to populate the eight Worcester colleges. Without warning, they swarm the city. They thrive amongst the ivy at Holy Cross and in the grassy knolls of QCC. To some, this species—often known as “all the frigging college kids”—is an annoyance. But here’s the news: they’re here to stay. The Colleges of Worcester Consortium estimates that approximately 30,000 college students walk among us from September through May.

So what does the in-state, maybe even incounty, student do to create some distance? Don’t go home every weekend. “Especially in the beginning of the year,” Catalanotti says. Yes, it’s tempting to take your laundry home when there’s confusion about cold cycles and the necessity of fabric softener, but stick it out. During those first few months, everyone’s going through the same experiences and is looking to make friends, Catalanotti explains. Be around, be positive. “I also supported a lot of the athletic teams where I met a lot of my friends that were members of the teams,” Catalanotti recounts. So get out those pompoms and show some spirit. Also remember that you’re not just a member of the school community, but the Worcester community. Find ways to contribute to both, that doesn’t mean icing your elderly neighbor or feeding the colossal chipmunks at Green Hill, but how about volunteering? Catalanotti credits her “awesome freshman year” not only to professors and classes, but her experiences volunteering at the Salvation Army’s after-school

And if you happen to be one of those 30,000— welcome, we hope you’re comfortable with tough love. You are about to embark on a college education in one of the most unique cities in Massachusetts. It’s loud, it’s busy, and it isn’t exactly sugarcoated; but the opportunities are endless if you’re willing to find them. Needless to say, as if freshman year isn’t traumatizing enough, you have decided to do it in Worcester—you’re going to need all the advice you can get. So we’ve tracked down the experts, seniors and graduates who have experienced college life in Worcester and lived to tell about it. They’re ready to reveal the good, the bad, and the ugly truths about living in Worcester.

program. Here, she met other students in her program who shared her interests. “There are a lot of volunteer opportunities for Worcester college students. Try to get involved because it is also a great way to meet more people, she advises. Can’t live without item: Sneakers Place to go for budget-friendly food: Piccadilly Pub (located in Auburn and Worcester) and New England Roast Beef on Goldstar Boulevard in Worcester.

When Boston native Joshua Cohen graduated from Clark University’s fifthyear program in education, you’d think his first move would be to go running back to the excitement of the state’s capital. But he’s still here. “I like Worcester’s style of big city, Cohen says. And after five years at Clark—through a program that allows students to come out with a master’s in education—he knows a thing or two about studying in Worcester.

“It’s a fantastic place to make a name for yourself—in a positive way; the city is small enough, but important enough, he says. Cohen studied psychology with a concentration in urban development and social change and also stresses the importance of volunteering as a way to get to know the community. Not only do you get a better understanding of the community, Cohen says, but volunteering awards students the chance to get to know key members of the neighborhood, as well as learn about resources Worcester has to offer. During his time at Clark, Cohen volunteered at Goddard Elementary as well as in mentoring programs offered by Clark. It is programs like this, Cohen says, that encourage students to develop relationships with the community—an important factor in creating an enjoyable college experience. “Everything I’m doing now has come from my interactions between Clark and the community, Cohen says. “You’ve got to know what’s going on around you from politics and development to nightlife and museums. And of course, you’ve got to be comfortable exploring. That is one thing Cohen wishes he’d done more of—exploring. “Some locations of restaurants aren’t always in the most warm and inviting places, but that’s

where you’ll find the gems, he notes. That’s not to say you should go wandering the streets alone in the wee hours, but there’s something to be said for a little bravery. There’s something here for everyone, and for students to get the most out of college, you’ve got to “make [the experience] your own, Cohen says. Always remember: “Worcester is what you make it. Nugget of wisdom: Find out about options (work study, honors, studying abroad) sooner rather than later; you’ll probably

have to hunt them down yourself.

“Worcester does have a negative image for being a sort of rough area or a city with not too much going on – but that’s false, says Worcester State College senior Ruby Pontbriand. Pontbriand, who is a double major in communications

COLLEGE SURVIVAL GUIDE

and visual/performing arts, is happy to attend a Worcester college. “Worcester may not be as trendy as Boston, but there are a lot of interesting things.”

Perhaps the most adventurous thing to attempt in Worcester is driving. So you over there, moping about why you can’t have a car on campus freshman year, take the time to learn a thing or two, your blood pressure will thank you. For starters, Pontbriand says, “Get to know the area before you drive anywhere by yourself. Be careful making left turns in the city. Watch out for potholes on Chandler Street.” Another Worcester State senior, Wyatt Merrill, agrees. His can’t-live-without recommendations? “Worcester Mag, duh. Also, a GPS is good if you’re not familiar with the city. There are many shortcuts and back roads to get to know in Worcester,” Merrill says. Can’t-live-without-item: Brita water filter Always remember: “You only go around once”

6

we stop talking about the great exhibits at WAM, the (semi) affordable housing, awesome concerts, etc… and remind you that there may be times that you’ll have to pull on those bigkid pants and roll with the punches.

Which brings us to the next portion of the program; the part where, for a moment,

Merrill explains that sometimes it’s easier to find “a part of town with nothing going on than it is to find a good area with lots of entertainment if you’re new to the city. But it can be done.” That’s where you, the eager young student comes in, creative juices flowing.

For example, if your school library isn’t cutting it, check out other campus libraries. Are the sounds of Highland Street not lulling you to sleep? Earplugs. Ready to go postal if you have to eat one more apple-cinnamon toaster strudel in your dorm room? Boulevard Diner pancakes. While the solutions to the freshman blues may not always be as simple as pancakes and earplugs, they help to make the college experience your own. You’ll spend plenty of time on campus and in classrooms (as you should), but there’s something to be said for uprooting routine and surveying your surroundings. According to your fellow “frigging college kids” (said with tolerance, if not affection), the trick is preparation and exploration. Aside from this college guide—which your mother probably dropped off with a box of Oreos—few things will simply fall in your lap. You’ve got to get out there and find the experiences. With wisdom imparted, suggestions made, and threats conveyed (don’t even think of taking my booth at O’Connors), we say a happy, hearty “welcome” to you, young scholars. Good luck.

“So what do you want to do tonight?” No doubt, this mantra will be frequently uttered during the course of your college years in Worcester. Instead of succumbing to boring dininghall food and spending hours in front of Facebook, log out, get out of your computer chair, throw on your Chucks and explore this city. We don’t want to hear any excuses because we’ve got it all covered – from cheap food to fun bars to afternoon outings.

CANAL DISTRICT The Canal District has about as many dining and food options as roads converge in Kelley Square. If you’re a sports person, check out the recently opened sports bars, The Perfect Game and Square One. The Perfect Game has an HD Golf Simulator, so you can perfect your swing in style, and Square One also has a dance floor for the less sport-inclined friends. If your idea of a good night is hitting the clubs, then dance on over to BLU Ultralounge & Nightclub and Fusion next door. Both host special events, karaoke nights and DJs who know how to get everyone moving. Also nearby is the Boiler Room, as well as Mixers Cocktail Lounge and MB Lounge, two popular gay and lesbian-friendly bars.

For the beer connoisseur, hop over to the Dive Bar, where they have many domestic microbrews for reasonable prices and a rotating selection of uncommon brews on tap. Don’t let the name fool you: it’s more jive than dive, especially on Thursday nights when they have local musicians. More live music can be found at the Lucky Dog Music Hall, where you can get glammed out on Thursday nights to see the awesome 80s tribute band, The Flock of Assholes. Nick’s Bar and Restaurant on Millbury Street has a speakeasy vibe, especially when they host musical acts that seem like they are straight out of the 1920s. Hotel Vernon in Kelley Square has a dive bar feel and is a great place to catch a band any night. For the foodie, there are plenty of options. Tacos Parilla is authentic Mexican cuisine at its finest with prices any college student can appreciate. Wings Over Worcester is a college staple that delivers juicy wings with a ton of flavor. Newly opened Smokestack Urban Barbecue will help satisfy your Southern cravings. For a more upscale feel, treat yourself to Bocado for authentic tapas that will have you saving your pennies to come back again. Two great consignment shops are located along

COLLEGE SURVIVAL GUIDE HIGHLAND STREET Located right next to WPI, this section of Worcester is perfect for studying, munching and shopping. The Bean Counter is hugely popular with students, a place where you can get your fix of caffeine, then stuff yourself with their made-from-scratch, preservative-free baked goods including vegan and gluten-free delights. It’s also a great place to pick up a birthday cake. It’s open until 10 p.m., Monday to Thursday, so you can fit some studying in while ogling the cookies.

Speaking of late nights, Tortilla Sam’s is a go-to joint for midnight munchies. They are BYOB, open until 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and serve up “freshMex.” The menu is full of veggie options like the “deep-fried tofu wings” soaked in buffalo sauce. Alli McDonald, a junior at Worcester State College who works at Tortilla Sams, says one of her favorite dishes is the “big tofu burrito,” which has

a combination of soy sauce, sesame sauce and cilantro. If you need your designer duds on a budget, consignment/vintage shop Unique Boutik is down the street. “It’s great designer clothes for one-third of the price,” says owner Lilana Silkman. “I’m always trying to find something different.” Her efforts pay off, as her shop showcases costume jewelry, adorable dresses and even a men’s section. The Futon Store, next door, has futons, of course, but also a cool collection of jewelry, clothes, candles and classic “Worcester rocks” and “Worcester Could Be Worse” t-shirts. Other notable places are the Sole Proprietor, an upscale seafood restaurant, the Boynton Restaurant & Spirits with classic dishes and specials during pro sports games, and cheap eats at Tech Pizza. It’s also a short stroll to Elm Park if you want to walk off a full belly.

GREEN HILL PARK Green Hill Park is perfect for a Sunday afternoon distraction. With over 480 acres, this huge park offers something for everyone, from the extreme-sports enthusiast to the casual hiker. It is bordered by Route 9 (Belmont Street) on the south, 1-290 on the north, on the west by Lincoln Street and to the east by Skyline Drive. You

could pack a picnic basket, full of veggie goodies from Belmont Vegetarian down the street or from Trader Joe’s, a bit further down in Shrewsbury. Head to the benches near the lake or pack a blanket and soak up the sun. If you’re looking to burn off some steam with a pick-up game, head to the basketball courts or soccer and baseball fields. Want to try something new? Try out the handball courts. Green Hill is also home to Worcester’s biggest skate park, with street features, bowled transitions and verts. Stop by on a sunny afternoon and the two bowls are filled with local skaters and BMXers. Hiking and biking trails are also aplenty. You can pass by a quarry, take in the view of Worcester from the top, or blaze your own journey. If you’re homesick for the outdoors, then these trails are pretty good medicine. You can also pet the animals at the Green Hill Park Farm, a free mini-zoo with animals like sheep, goats, llamas, pigs and more. If you need a peaceful spot to rest, the Massachusetts Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial is also located on four acres

in the park. The poignant memorial is situated next to a pond and walking paths.

PLEASANT STREET AND RICHMOND AVENUE Over on the West Side of Worcester, this area is a little mecca of outdoor dining nestled in a quiet neighborhood. For some seriously strong espresso and a European atmosphere, Espress Yourself Coffee is perfect. Part of the appeal is the “Cheers” factor, says Clark senior Alyssa Miller. “You will always know someone here,” she says. Their salad with fresh

tomatoes, mozzarella and onions is her favorite and the sandwiches are also cheap and delicious. They have free wi-fi and giant umbrellas to help with the glare. “The quality of size of the umbrellas is key, says Wachusett Community College student Taylor Benoit.

Right next to Espress Yourself is a convenience shop and a crazy-good barbecue joint, West Side Steak & BBQ. It’s BYOB (head over to Big Bob’s Liquor next door to pick some up), also has outdoor seating and of course, many quality barbecue dishes. The favorite is the pulled pork sandwich, says Michael Strub. “We keep it sweet and we use fresh ingredients every day, says Strub, who works at West Side. The sweet potato fries are the favorite side, and they come as hot as they are crispy. Across the street is The Corner Grille, a funky Italian place that serves specialty pizza pies, pasta dishes, wraps and salads. They have everything from basic – the sweet tomato and basil pie, to the more adventurous – like the baked potato,

chicken curry or aloha pies. “I think a lot of students have a much more interesting palate today, said employee Robin Courtney. Corner Grille serves to this diverse palate, as well as to the sweet tooth. Its counter spills over with homemade baked goods that you can buy individually. You can also get freshsqueezed lemonade served in a mason jar or take home a container of hummus, grape leaves or mac and cheese. This fall, the Corner Grill is expanding hours until 3 a.m., Thursday to Saturday, and is BYOB. Oh, and guess what else they have? Outdoor seating, of course. So whether you are new to town or returning for another year of academic immersion Worcester style, take the time to get off campus and explore the eclectic neighborhoods of our city. Hop, Skip and a Bus ride away GETTING AROUND WORCESTER

Heather Vandenengel

WRTA BUSES

If you don’t have a car, are trying to be green, or are just plain afraid to drive through Worcester’s crazy streets, do not fear; there are far less scary, cheaper and more efficient ways for getting around and out of this city.

For only $1.50 you can snag a ride on the WRTA buses that will bring you pretty much anywhere you need to go in the city. “I think it’s a heck of an opportunity for college students, especially if they want to go to other colleges or if they want to go on excursions outside of the city,” said WRTA administrator Stephen O’Neil of the bus system. The lines all converge at City Hall, where you can transfer to any other route and they run from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Route 15 will take you down to Shrewsbury Street if you want to grab some dinner, or you could stay on and do some shopping at Trader Joe’s in White City Plaza. Route 30 stops by all

WOO BUS

When you’re looking for a ride around town on the weekend, the Woo Bus is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. The bus connects Assumption College, Becker, Holy Cross and WPI with all the major stops in and around Worcester – Union Station, Main Street, Park Avenue, Shrewsbury Street, the Target Plaza and the Blackstone Valley Mall in Millbury. It runs from 5:30 p.m. – 1:30 a.m. and is free for all undergraduate students at participating colleges. You only need to bring your college ID to get on board. Easy enough right? Go to cowc.org/ college-student-resources/woo-bus or call 508-581-8911 for the exact schedule.

DAYTIME SHUTTLE The Colleges of Worcester Consortium also offers a free shuttle from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. that connects WPI, Becker, Assumption, Clark, Worcester State and Holy Cross with each other and the Worcester Public Library, Union Station, Worcester Art Museum and the downtown area. Check out cowc.org/college-student-resources/ shuttle for more info.

where no cars are allowed. It’s part of a larger project to connect Worcester and Providence, which may be finished by the time you graduate (yeah, right). Green Hill Park is also a great option if you want to take your mountain bike along some wideranging terrains that also pass through a cemetery and a zoo. If you haven’t completely lost your breath at the top of the hills, you might with the breathtaking views of the city. There are also many hiking trails in the area if you want to give the wheels a rest. Lake Avenue and very hilly Hamilton Street also have bike lanes for an easier trip, and you could also take Salisbury Street, which goes by Assumption College, all the way into Holden for a pleasant ride through the countryside. For a more adventurous trip, take Route 70 to Route 110, which will take you on a ride around gorgeous Wachusett Reservoir. A cool and cheap alternative to buying a bike is Worcester’s Earn-a-Bike program. Volunteer 10 hours in their shop, removing

and organizing parts, building bikes for donation or sale, or just doing general help, and then use their parts to build your own bike. By the time you’re done, you’ll pretty much be a bicycle mechanic. Visit them at 34 Cambridge St. in Worcester and get more information at worcesterearnabike.org. Hiking trails are not scarce in Worcester County. Cascades Park near the Worcester Airport has a beautiful hike along cascading falls with an equally stunning view at the top. There are a whole network of trails for different skill levels and a city bike trail that passes by the park. Wachusett Mountain in Princeton also offers challenging hikes up the mountain during the skiing off-season. You can walk up to the summit in the fall to see Worcester County in all of its autumnal glory and stop for a picnic on the way up. Purgatory Chasm in Sutton is also a local favorite to picnic or rock-climb. It was created when a release of dammedup glacial water was released near the end of the last Ice Age, approximately 14,000 years ago, and its many interesting rock formations make for a varied afternoon hike.

LEAVING WORCESTER To Boston: Your best option is to take the commuter rail, which leaves from Union Station—you can get there by taking the free consortium shuttle or the 1, 5, 11, 15, 16, 33 and 42 bus routes. A one-way trip to Boston costs $7.75 and a round trip is $15.50. During the week, there are 13 inbound trains that leave between 4:45 a.m. and 12:10 a.m., with less frequent trains on Saturday and Sunday. If you plan on going into Boston for the night, make sure to end your night by 10:20 p.m. during the week and 11 p.m. on the weekend; that’s when the last train departs for Worcester. To Providence: Also head to Union Station for the Greyhound or Peter Pan Bus Lines. For Greyhound, the roundtrip fare ranges from around $20 to $29 and buses leave two to three times a day. Peter Pan offers an express trip for $31, which also leaves once or twice a day. Visit peterpanbus.com and greyhound. com for up-to-date schedules and more information.
