GENERATIONAL DIFFERENCES IN THE WORKFORCE According to Pew Research Center's analysis of the U.S. Census Bureau data, one-in-three workers are Millennials, making them the largest generation in the U.S. labor force. To put it as more quantifiable data, over 56 million Millennials (aged 21-3 in 2017) were working or looking for work, totaling more than Generation X and Baby Boomers. They accounted for 53 million and 41 million, respectively, in 2017.

So, what does this mean? As our labor force continues to change and develop, a onesize-fits-all approach is out the door. With a multigenerational workforce, managing day-to-day in the workplace may look different than it did previously.

Millennial & Gen Z Employees According to CNBC, the number one reason younger people left their jobs in the last two years was pay, followed by mental health deterioration and burnout. Work-Life Balance, development opportunities, and value alignment are a few top priorities when these generations choose new employers. About three-quarters would prefer a hybrid or remote work situation. 91% of Millennials said they aspire to work in leadership roles, and 83% would also prefer to work for companies with fewer layers of management, looking to remove the hierarchical approach to leadership. Gen Z is the most diverse generation yet, making up 11.6% of the global workforce, which will grow more significantly in the coming years. As Gen Z continues to represent the most racially and ethnically diverse generation in U.S. history, 69% of this generation say they would "absolutely" be more likely to apply or work for an organization emphasizing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity in the workplace. Transforming the status quo, Millennials and Gen Z seek purpose in their organizations without sacrificing who they are outside of work. Both generations essentially prioritize social value over financial value. As Millennials and Gen Z are primarily reported to be motivated by responsibility, work experiences, diversity, individuality, and personalization, many employees and job seekers are looking for employers to drive societal and environmental change, says Michele Parmelee, Deloitte Global deputy CEO. In conclusion, employing a diverse workforce is imperative to the growth and development of any organization. But understanding and placing value on multigenerational employees based on their strengths improves morale and brings fresh perspectives to any scenario.
