Bryce Canyon There are no guarantees with the weather, but if you wondered why we have chosen February to explore Utah, here’s the answer. Bryce Canyon under fresh snow and clear skies. We could be lucky this time too! Photo by Peter Eastway.

Capitol Reef Area Even in the middle of the day, the light can be remarkable on our drive through the Capitol Reef area. And we’ll have a chance to photograph the night sky in this remarkably dark part of Planet Earth. Photo by Peter Eastway.

The Itinerary Day 1:10 February 2020 - Salt Lake City to Bonneville You should already be in Salt Lake City or arriving very early. We may have had a meal together the night before. We’ll pick you up at the hotel and take a short drive out to the Bonneville Salt Flats. Naturally our photography will begin as soon as we hit the ground! Day 2: Feb 11 Bonneville Salt Flats Today we will explore the salt flats further, including a one hour aerial flight. As the small plane will only have two photographers at a time, we’ll also be shooting from the ground or doing some classwork! Day 3: Feb 12 To Capitol Reef After a morning shoot to get some early rays, we drive to Capitol Reef. They say it takes five hours, but we usually take a lot longer than that, shooting things along the way. Day 4: Feb 13 Capitol Reef We spend the day exploring Capitol Reef, including a few hidden gems and, weather permitting, we may try some night photography after dinner! Day 5: Feb 14 Hwy 12 on the way to Bryce Canyon Bryce Canyon is only a short 2-3 hour drive away, but we’ll take our time along the remarkable Highway 12, looking for photo opportunities. Day 6: Feb 15 Bryce Canyon We have a full day to explore Bryce Canyon, plus some time for ‘‘image lab’’ (processing our photos with Peter and Tony to help) and classroom time, working our images and discussing photography. Day 7: Feb 16 To Zion After shooting Bryce Canyon at dawn, today we take another short drive over to Zion. This is epic terrain and we’re looking for equally epic landscapes. Day 8: Feb 17 To Monument Valley We’ll be up early for a sunrise shoot at Zion and then there’s plenty of time to get over to Monument Valley for the sunset. Or we might stop at one or two other places along the road instead! Day 9: Feb 18 Monument Valley We’ve taken the iconic Monument Valley sunset shot, so now it’s time to explore some different places we have in mind, both in and nearby Monument Valley. Day 10: Feb 19 To Grand Canyon We’ll shoot Monument Valley again this morning and then it’s a leisurely drive over to the Grand Canyon for a sunset shoot. We may even try some night photography again! Day 11: Feb 20 Grand Canyon We have sunrise and sunset options and in the middle of the day, we’ll take a little time for an image lab session and to review our images, talk about post-production and so on. Day 12: Feb 21 Grand Canyon to Las Vegas Our final shoot will be sunrise at the Grand Canyon, followed by a leisurely breakfast, maybe an hour or two image lab and then it’s into Las Vegas and the end of the photo tour.

Inclusions In keeping with our road trip adventure, accommodation is in comfortable lodgings - clean and warm! You’ll feel right at home. In addition, Southwest Adventure Tours is providing the Photographic Counsel with: • Comfortable Transportation • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinners • Park Entrance Fees • Flight over Bonneville Salt Flats • Monument Valley guide Tony has also insisted that all tables have a bottle of red wine on them for evening meals as this is conducive to implausible photographic dissertations.

Monument Valley As we stay at the View Hotel, it’s easy to walk outside the hotel and shoot an image like this, either at sunset or by the light of the stars and moon! Photo: Tony Hewitt.

Why Do So Many Participants Return? There are lots of photography tours and photography workshops. Many of these are presented by friends and colleages of Peter and Tony - and there’s no doubt their guests and students have a great time. But often there is a difference with the photography side. There is only a small number of highly qualified photographers who are not only sociable and friendly, but have a depth of photography experience and knowledge that separates their tuition from the others. It’s not just about knowing ‘stuff’, it’s about having the real-world experiences, of working in the profession, of exhibiting in the art world, and of being able to communicate and share this knowledge with others. Obviously we’re not the only presenters who know their stuff. We work with and recommend Christian Fletcher, Nick Rains, David Oliver, Les Walkling, Michael Coyne, Len Metcalf, Richard White, Mike Langford, Jackie Ranken, Nick Melidonis, Robin Nichols... And Peter and Tony, of course! These photographers have a depth of knowledge that becomes immediately apparent when you engage with them. They are not ‘know-it-alls’, but they do know all about it and so they’re able to present the many different and varied views for your consideration. It’s a skill for passing on their skills. All in a friendly and approachable manner. And we’re told by the photographers who return with us for their third, fourth and fifth workshops that it makes a huge difference.

Road Side Stops Are Great People look for the iconic destinations when choosing a photography tour, and that’s fair enough! But we think some of your best photos will happen at lesser known locations found along the road.

What Level Photographer Do I Need To Be? To get the most out of this workshop, you should be a reasonably experienced photographer. By this we mean you should have a good grasp of your camera controls, understand how to use the histogram, and be interested in the aesthetics of photography. Naturally, we will help you with all aspects of your photography, but you can learn basic photography on other trips that are perhaps less expensive. What Peter and Tony are offering is an insight into how they think and approach the art of photography, and the program is designed to set you up on your own journey of discovery. Hence, to get the most out of it, you should already be familiar with your camera and basic post-production (Photoshop or Lightroom). Then you will be ready to take on board the more advanced concepts and approaches that are a part of the art of photography.

Monument Valley Wide-angles or telephotos? There’s no right lens for every situation, so we recommend you bring as long and as wide lenses as you have. Photo: Tony Hewitt.

they use professional equipment, but that’s their full time job.

• Standard zoom - cover everything • Wide-angles - as wide as you have

So, whether you turn up with the latest DSLR or an older camera you’ve loved for many years, it really doesn’t matter. Our workshops are all about technique and visualisation, so any camera equipment you have will be fine. We will help you get the most out of it! And of course, we’re also happy to give you any equipment advice you might require.

• Telephoto - 300mm is not too long • Macro lens - lots of close-up stuff • Spare camera battery • Battery Charger • Backpack style camera bag • Tripod (with a quick release plate) • Plenty of storage cards for your camera • Polarising filter • Neutral density filters (0.9x, 4.0x optional)

We do recommend you bring everything you think you might need, but not so much you can’t carry it with you. You will be able to leave equipment behind in the hotels or cars if you don’t want to take it on a particular shoot, but note that leaving equipment in the vehicle while we are away has some risk!

• Card reader and cable if necessary • Laptop computer (Mac or PC) • External back-up drives • Photoshop is recommended • Mouse or stylus/tablet •

Clo th in g Stu ff • Hiking boots • Thermal layers • Windproof, rain proof coat • Down coat or similar • Warm hat and gloves • Water bottle • Torch or head torch • Alarm clock (we can’t wait!)
