Outside of using a ‘Mark One Eyeball’, some of the primary types of systems and monitoring methods you’ll see utilised by Pipeline Patrol crews (to include the unmanned sector) are: Laser Aerial Leak Detectors – Laser Aerial Leak Detectors are sensors mounted onboard an aircraft capable of detecting parts-per-million levels of methane gas at ground level. GIS Videography – GIS Videography is the technical process of taking videos in Ultra-HD with georeferenced overlays, including GIS centerline data as well as a host of other references. Additionally, GIS Videography can provide augmented reality to aid in specialised pipeline projects. Aerial Imagery – Aerial Imagery or Aerial Photography uses specialised digital cameras to analyse the status of a pipeline grid. Aerial imagery methods consist of oblique photographs, photogrammetry, and orthophotos. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) – Airborne Lidar systems can capture high-resolution long linear ground features such as pipelines and identify any safety issues using 3D data. Infrared (IR) Inspections – Infrared (IR) thermography measures temperature variances of a component as heat (i.e., thermal radiation) flows through or from a pipeline. The bottom line is that besides the aircraft, Aerial Patrol technology and tools are critical in supporting pipeline operators regarding ROW certification, project planning, maintenance, required structure counts, and more. FIRST TECNAM P2012 SENTINEL SMP FOR APEX LANDS IN TAIWAN

The first of two new Tecnam P2012 SMP aircraft for Apex Flight Academy arrived at Taoyuan International Airport on 16th November 2021, a further step in the company’s quest to expand its horizons.

The eleven seat aircraft took off in Capua Italy and arrived in Taipei after flying 6600 nautical miles, with 10 fuel stops, via Russia/Siberia and South Korea, facing temperatures as low as -24 degrees Celsius. The second aircraft on order is scheduled to join Apex in 2022, with an additional six aircraft on option. Apex is the only professional flight training organisation in Taiwan and will use the multi-mission P2012 Sentinel SMP for passenger transportation, air ambulance missions, sightseeing tours, parachute jumping, aerial photography, and more. The company is headquartered in the metropolitan area of Taipei with its flight training base located at Taitung Fengnian (RCFN) Airport. It aspires to become an important base for training Asian pilots, “right in the heart of Asia — Taiwan.”

“Introducing the P2012 to its fleet means Apex will benefit from the real multi-mission capability of the aircraft: special mission platform, passenger transportation, aerial tours, air ambulance and parachute jumping missions can be performed on the same airframe and interchanged in a timely manner, making the P2012 a force multiplier in the company portfolio,” said Tecnam. “In the special-mission platform role the aircraft outmatches its competitor with full size hatches and high mission power capable of supporting higher class payloads,” added the manufacturer. “The passenger and aerial tour configuration will benefit from the next-level Traveller accommodation, with air conditioning, in-seat power, widest legroom in its class, in fuselage cargo vanes and dedicated wide window at all seats,” Tecnam continued. The air ambulance version takes advantage of the quick conversion in less than ten minutes and of the low and wide cabin door that allows easy and fast patient loading/unloading operations. The newly introduced parachute jumping version, of which Apex is the launch customer, offers a further differentiation of the business plan and takes advantage of the high cabin volume and of the low P2012 aircraft series operating costs, with no cycle limitations and hassle free engine operations.

The P2012 can carry nine passengers and two pilots. Apex pilots and technicians completed their flying and maintenance training in dedicated programmes held in Italy earlier this year.

Cutting-edge avionics by Garmin offers pilots all the information they require for day, night, IFR and PBN operations, making operations to any airfield another key factor in the choice of aircraft, noted Tecnam.

Sightseeing Pioneers

Apex Chairman Wilson Kao said that his company would initially introduce sightseeing tours and aerial photography services alongside its training academy. He added that the company is working with travel agencies to introduce the very first aerial tours in Taiwan that take passengers to see the picturesque mountains, canyon and coast of Eastern Taiwan that has never been explored this way in the past.
