HISTORIC A/C 48

On the downside, currently, UAVs frequently arrive too late or are too disorganised from an operational, in-thefield perspective to be helpful in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. Humanitarian aid organisations are addressing this issue by building local or regional networks and integrating UAVs into their regional emergency response toolkits or programs. Additionally, inadequate regulations can be a substantial hindrance to deploying drones in crises. In many countries, regulations do not exist and, where they do exist, they typically do not include conditions for humanitarian emergencies.

If you want to know, the types of UAVs humanitarian organizations are currently focused on are small fixedwing and ‘ multirotor ’ or ‘VTOL’ (Vertical Takeoff and Landing) in supporting their operations. An example of these types of platforms that have or are used in humanitarian aid efforts are:

Implementation and Monitoring Who provides Aerial Work aviation humanitarian air services? With more geopolitical tensions and natural disasters worldwide, this onerous duty has been put more recently in the hands of multinational organisations and aid agencies to share resources and increase global coverage. Although the reason for this is due to the limitations of civil and military government assets accessible for humanitarian aid, these organisations have in the past decade been shifting to using privately owned assets, especially for aviation, to conduct complex air missions in harsh environments while at the same time maintaining stringent civilian airworthiness requirements.

Some of these types of non-government and multinational organisations that arrange and execute humanitarian air services, or the aviation companies that are sub-contracted to support such groups, are:

Multi-National Organisations • United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) • United Nations Pacific Humanitarian Air Service • European Union Humanitarian Aid Flight

Non-Government (NGO) Organisations • AERObridge • Air Serve • Airlink • Mercy Airlift • SARAID Corporate Service Providers • Global Helicopter Service GmbH, Germany • Ultimate Aviation Group, South Africa • 748 Air Services Ltd, Kenya

Operational Review and Evaluation The humanitarian aid outlook scenario for 2021 and beyond remains bleak in urban and rural settings worldwide due to a series of factors, including worsening geopolitical insecurity and a continually changing environment.

With this not-so-positive analysis, the Aerial Work aviation Humanitarian Aid sector is postured to continue to intensify efforts to support people in need. Specifically, both manned and unmanned aircraft of all types with their specialised capabilities will continue to be used in transporting critical supplies and medicines, monitor catastrophic conditions, and assess damage at the right time and in the right place. Because of the aircraft’ s unique capabilities, the humanitarian aid community can be more effective and efficient in its efforts.

Even though the aviation sector is just one small part of a sizable global humanitarian aid community, its contribution can be massively felt within hours and days after a catastrophic incident. Besides civil governments and military units providing such service from the sky, the multi-national, NGO, and corporate aviation communities are picking up more of this service today and will do well into the future.

So, the next time you read about a humanitarian catastrophe or through misfortune find yourself in a crisis, be reassured a fleet of aircraft from small UAVs to widebody jet cargo airplanes, along with their professional crews, are coming to the aid of you (and others) to save lives, alleviate suffering, and maintain human dignity.

In other words, the Aerial Work humanitarian air service sector is genuinely the ‘Aerial Angels ’ of Aviation who will be there for you now and in the future… In other words, “Don ’t give up hope…someone will fly far and wide to help you!” ■

Spectacular Acts Frame EXTRA’s 40th Anniversary

On 21st August 2021, Extra Aircraft company owner and founder, Walter Extra, issued an invitation to folks from all over the aviation industry — partners and clients, as well as good friends and long-time companions — to join him at Dinslaken airfield for the celebration of the 40 anniversary of his enterprise, and to look ahead into the future together. “Walter’s hospitality is legend,” according to the company — and so more than 300 guests arrived on this warm summer’s evening to celebrate life and to enjoy food, drink, and music while having a good time together.

“But Extra wouldn’t be Extra had he not had some very special aces up his sleeve for his invitees.”

The afternoon started with youngsters flying model aircraft and recreational drones, entertaining invited visitors by giving spectacular demonstrations of their leisure activities.

Aerobatics

Leading further into the summer evening’s twilight, guests were treated to a special kind of top-class aerobatics, “which one can only expect to come across here, deep inside the core of the aerobatics universe,” said the company. This part of the celebration started with a heart-stopping performance by ex Patrouille-de-France pilot Francois Rallet, who kept onlookers on their toes with his presentation. Following nightfall, British aerobatics ace Mark Jefferies was the next act in Walter Extra’s entertainment program by thrilling the audience with an aerobatics show at night. Covered in a shower of sparks from pyrotechnic devices installed in his Extra SC and combined with further LED lighting and smoke, Mark offered an aerobatics experience of the highest class which surely many of the attendees, including many industry insiders, had never ever seen before.

Pyrotechnics

But the best was yet to come! Around nine at night, Walter Extra finally brought his excellent connections into the world of pyrotechnics to bear. And so, after dark, two top artists in this field conjured up a so-called “pyro-musical” in the skies above the northwestern Ruhr district, which was nothing short of spectacular. As far away as in the city of Essen, people on the ground were mesmerised by the perfect harmony of fireworks and music, from classical all the way to pop tunes, a never-before seen pyrotechnics display which came second to none, not even the well renowned New Year’s Eve fireworks in Sydney, so “phantastic” was the show, explained Extra.

Airfield Home

Dinslaken airfield (to the west of Dortmund) is where Extra Aircraft is rooted, a place that the company has called home for 40 years now. “The Extra brand is not just a melodic name in aerobatics around the globe, but the company has always been and continues to be a reliable partner to service and maintain their clients’ turboprop or piston-powered aircraft, as well,” noted the company.

Party guests were grateful for this outstanding summer evening. And so were the victims of the recent flooding in Germany when, on the night, partygoers contributed 5,200 Euros in donations to the relief effort.

Truly a feast for sense and the senses that has delighted everyone.

So, here’s to the next forty years of Extra Aircraft!

AVIDYNE Unveils Vantage Panel Upgrade for Cirrus SR20/SR22

Avidyne impresses with its all-new Vantage touchscreen flight display system.

One of the highlights of EAA AirVenture 2021 was Avidyne’s introduction of its all-new Vantage large-format hybrid touchscreen flight display system retrofit solution for Entegra-equipped Cirrus aircraft.

It’s not a stretch to say that Cirrus owners love their aircraft. And with good reason. The SR20 and SR22 are fast, capable, comfortable, and with the CAPS airframe parachute, they’re arguably the “safest” piston singles around.

Cirrus owners love their airplanes and are keen to find new ways to increase their ride’s capabilities. That passionate following is one reason Avidyne recently introduced its all-new Vantage 12.1-inch Electronic Flight Display (EFD) upgrade for legacy Cirrus SR20 and SR22 aircraft.

Avidyne’s President Dan Schwinn explained that the company had been canvassing its dealers and customers to find out what they wanted in a truly next-generation avionics upgrade over the past few years.

“We had received the greatest level of interest and the most consistent fleet upgrade opportunity from owners of the early Cirrus SR20 and SR22s, ” he said.

“There are nearly 4,000 Avidyne Entegra-equipped Cirrus owners who want something new in the form of a much more capable and consistent upgrade for their aircraft. ”

Big Touchscreen Displays Synthetic Vision

“Another differentiator for the Vantage displays is the unique 3D synthetic vision, which is standard with the upgrade, ” he continued. “Our system has both an egocentric, out-the-front-window display, and an exocentric view, which gives you the perspective from above and behind the aircraft.

“They give the pilot the option to view the situation in the way that’s best for them, ” Schwinn added. “That improves overall situational awareness and increases safety. ”

Speaking of situational awareness, Schwinn said that Vantage also includes a wide assortment of graphical depictions of traffic, weather, terrain, navigational maps, engine information, airport data, and more.

“Big displays are clearly what Cirrus owners want, so that’s where we’re going to take the lead in providing with our new Vantage EFD upgrade, ” Schwinn continued. “Avidyne’s large, 12.1-inch Vantage hybrid touchscreen displays provide an uncluttered interface and beautiful capabilities that dramatically enhance a pilot’s situational awareness while making flying safer and more enjoyable. ”

During the Vantage’s Oshkosh AirVenture introduction, Schwinn stated that the Avidyne first Vantage upgrade would be FAA STC’d 2003 through 2008-era Cirrus aircraft. As the programme matures, other aircraft and configurations will be added to the Vantage programme.

As part of the FAA STC, said early-generation SR20s and SR22s would have to have been upgraded with a pair of Avidyne’s new IFD-series GPS navigators and the Avidyne DFC-90 digital autopilot. While the Vantage system requires the IFDs and DFC-90, they are not part of the initial Vantage STC package. (More about that later on).

Oh, and great news for all Cirrus owners who still love their Avidyne Entegra units; Schwinn stressed that the Vantage upgrade is not an end-of-life programme for the legacy displays. “These are still very capable units, and we know that a lot of Cirrus owners really like them as they are, ” he said. “Yes, Vantage is a bigger, better, more capable solution, but we know that some won’t want to upgrade or will want to wait for a while. No matter what they decide to do, Avidyne is committed to providing updates and support for the legacy Entegra displays for a long time to come. ”

You’ll want the Vantage upgrade

While no doubt the industry will applaud Avidyne’s commitment to supporting its legacy brand, make no mistake, once you see what Vantage is all about, your Entegra units are history! Let’s start with screen size. While Vantage’s 12.1-inch displays may not sound too much bigger than Entegra’s 10-inch screens, the fact is they are 40-percent bigger with a whopping 64-percent increase in pixel density.

Of course, big displays are just the beginning of the many improvements Vantage brings to your Cirrus’s cockpit. Another is Avidyne’s hybrid touchscreen technology, allowing pilots to control all the various functions with buttons, knobs, or via the touchscreen.

“They function like our popular IFD-products, ” Schwinn said.

“Pilots really like their ease of functionality and have been asking when we were going to make something like that in a big-screen product?”

Big displays at a not-so-big price…

Now for the information you’ve been waiting for: Avidyne is quoting a retail price of $25,000USD (uninstalled) for the dual Vantage 12.1-inch upgrade, and that includes trading in the Entegra cores.

“It’s not chump change, but in today’s avionics market, it’s really a pretty darn good deal considering all you get with Vantage: dual 12.1” displays with hybrid touch, WiFi connectivity to your iPad and other devices, 3D synthetic vision, terrain, obstacle, and traffic displays, built-in ARSs – the list goes on and on. Plus, no doubt it will deliver a significant boost to the Cirrus’ resale value, ” said Schwinn.

The only caveat is that your Cirrus must be equipped with Avidyne’s IFDseries GPS navigators and the DFC-90 digital autopilot. They’re part of the initial FAA STC approvals. Adding those will, of course, add to the total cost of the package.

Schwinn explained that once the Vantage upgrade makes it to market, the company will systematically add other variations to the STC allowing the integration of other third-party avionics.

“Vantage is our total refreshing of Avidyne’s aggressive participation in the big display upgrade business and is our core product architecture going forward for a long time, ” he concluded. “People expect us to bring out products that are different from the competition. Vantage is a significant market entry and gives us a platform to keep doing that for a long time. ”

CHECK YOUR INSURANCE !

Give us plenty of time to get you a Better Insurance Quote

According to Chris Varley, Chairman of Export & General (E&G) Insurance, businesses are rarely proactive in looking early for better insurance premiums, which can contribute significantly to wider cost-cutting measures.

“Whether you need insurance for your aircraft, hangar-keeper’s liability insurance, professional indemnity insurance, speaking to us early, perhaps a couple of months before the renewal date, can mean significant savings,” says Varley, who adds “We’re happy to remind you so feel free to let us know your current renewal dates.”

ABOUT E&G AVIATION INSURANCE

E&G Aviation Insurance is a leading aviation insurance broker specialising in insurance liability business cover including professional indemnity; cover for buildings including hangars and workshops; and for aircraft whether operating commercially, privately, or for training. THE BUSINESS OF INSURANCE

Insure Your Business!

The highly regulated worlds of aviation and insurance: the former needs the latter, a symbiotic relationship for one of the most high-technology, risk-managed industries in the world. It has taken more than one hundred years for aviation to create a culture that minimises risk from what is an incredible achievement, but things still can and do go wrong — just far less often, thankfully.

With that, you’d have thought insurance would be a lot cheaper for flying but in fact the market dynamics of the insurance industry — with fewer underwriters taking on aviation risks — have pushed premiums up for insuring aircraft.

The Good News…

Luckily businesses in aviation are still “businesses” and, in this respect, according to Chris Varley of E&G Aviation Insurance, they still enjoy quite a bit of choice. So, a broker such as E&G has quite a bit of scope to shop around for its clients to ensure ‘businesses that happen to be in the aviation industry’ can get competitive insurance quotes.

BUT, says Varley, please don’t leave it too late to get a quote. A broker needs time to shop around and fine-tune the requirement to your particular needs. There should be a few weeks or even months available for this before your current insurance expires, with the first week or two needed just to analyse what cover is best, what to include and not to include and at what levels.

If you run an aviation maintenance business, a training school, an airfield, or even organise aviation events or do anything related to aviation, please let E&G know so they can start to get to know you, and plan for your insurance needs.
