A message from our leadership

A C A D E MY

What a whirlwind of a year! As we entered 2022, our WBA operations began by navigating through some transitions in staffing like so many businesses and nonprofits in our area. Forbes magazine recently labeled it the “great reshuffling of talent” that we are seeing in all business sectors.

The new looking WBA Staff was determined to exemplify perseverance, one of our own core character values. Excitedly, the newly assembled WBA Staff was able to utilize our first-class ASH Centre outdoor campus and expand programming for yet another record setting year of impact! Wow!

Our newly built outdoor ballfields served as a home site to a wide range of area youth teams, nonprofit partners, schools and tournament competitions. This resulted in a new record of economic impact reaching nearly $3.1 million. The overall outdoor activities on the ballfields surpassed 1,400 usages which far exceeds our original projections!

Our “On Deck Initiative” continued to strengthen as WBA pursues creative ways to use the game of baseball to reach ALL kids. Continued collaborations with Boys & Girls Club of Fort Wayne, Turnstone, YMCA, Special Olympics, Alternative Baseball, Special Stars Clinic, numerous area schools and little league programs resulted in over 1,800+ area at-risk youth being positively impacted through On Deck programming. That was a new record as well!

The growing impact of our “On Deck Initiative” also led to new opportunities in the area of funding. WBA was able to successfully apply and receive programming grants that surpassed previous years. Our leadership is humbled at the growing community support and trust in our vision here at WBA. In addition to Foundation support, the corporate community stepped up in exciting ways to help us achieve a new record of giving at the 2022 Dinner on the Diamond Event! Separately, our 2nd Annual Wiffle Ball Spooktacular fundraiser was a big success by surpassing participation and fundraising goals from the previous year!

Our International Baseball Mission Trips were able to relaunch after being paused for a few years due to COVID. Area students, parents and coaches were able to partner with WBA to serve in both Kenya and Dominican Republic. Story after story of life change was reported back by those who chose to go and serve by putting their skills and abilities into action!

Friends, it was a unique year that far surpassed all expectations! A year of growth during a challenging time!

All of this is not possible without the amazing support of our donors and volunteers! World Baseball Academy continues to be grateful to all of our donors, volunteers, board and staff for their commitment to serving our next generation of young leaders. The year of 2022 brought an array of challenges and concerns to our organization. However, our leadership team has utilized WBA core values such as integrity, discipline and perseverance to make 2022 another successful chapter in our organization’s story.

Please consider standing with us and helping fuel our vision of developing leaders who positively impact our world.

Thank you,

Note from the Board President

As WBA Board President, I am proud of World Baseball Academy for establishing our organization as a true community asset for Northeast Indiana. Our Board and Staff have done an excellent job at continuing to move forward our vision of using the platform of baseball and softball to develop our next generation of young leaders. The ongoing growth of community support has been a tremendous encouragement to our board of directors, staff and volunteers.

In 2022, the ASH Centre campus was utilized in record setting ways while our “On Deck Initiative” for at-risk youth soared to new heights. Capital campaign contributions assisted with additional upgrades to the outdoor campus in the form of expanded overhead netting. The Motz Group, installers of the artificial turf fields, rated the quality of our fields in excellent condition after five busy years of usage. Meanwhile, foundation, corporation, and individual donor contributions increased in support of WBA’s On Deck Initiative and WBA’s long-term sustainment fund. It was truly a year of growth!

Of course, 2022 still had challenges to adapt and overcome. Our leadership has been able to successfully navigate through labor shortages, staff transitions and inflation throughout a challenging year. The Board of Directors work alongside our CEO and staff to help create a committed team that is privileged to see our vision continue to grow. Developing leaders who positively impact our world remains our vision and passion.

ASH Centre facilities

The outdoor campus boasts the highest quality youth baseball complex in Northern Indiana, Northwest Ohio and all of Michigan. Four highquality fields serve both baseball and softball players, ages eight through college. Three fields have turf infields with natural grass outfields and our newest field is all turf. First class lighting allows for more available field usage hours and better visibility. Portable fencing, portable mounds, and adjustable base paths make our fields perfect for any group's needs!

We have been excited to partner with the following groups to provide complimentary field access for their organization through WBA’s On Deck Initiative:

•The Smith Academy for Excellence •FCA

INDOOR CAMPUS

World Baseball Academy owns and operates the ASH Centre, a 27-acre athletic complex that includes premier indoor and outdoor athletic facilities. The ASH Centre indoor facilities are contained in a 43,285 square foot building that includes: a 16,000 sq ft arena with NFL quality turf, an 8,000 square foot gym with a basketball court renovated to NBA specifications, and a weight room/fitness center, a golf academy, retractable batting tunnels, baseball lab, PT clinic, offices and concessions.

World Baseball Academy owns the facility, and leases a large portion of the indoors to Optimum Performance Sports, a department of The Orthopedic Hospital of Lutheran Health Network. OPS serves athletes of all ages and sports, providing strength, agility and speed training as well as rehabilitation. Physical therapists and sports medicine specialists see patients in private office space. Apex Golf Lab and the Fort Wayne Mad Ants serve as sub-tenants to OPS.

The ASH Centre campus has become a first class community asset with a wide range of activities serving both young people and adults!

The personalized attention with one-on-one instruction can be very helpful to any athlete in enhancing their skill level and knowledge.

WBA programming staff Andy McManama, Adam Roser, DJ Moore, Caleb Stayton, and Blake Converset were able to provide one-on-one attention to a wide range of students.

GROUP INSTRUCTION

WBA has been excited to host both our Spring, Fall, and Winter Development Programs to give kids grades 2-12 the chance to further their skills during the off season. These multi-week camps create a fun atmosphere of combined instruction and game play for the participants to enhance their skills as well as knowledge of the game! Each program has a special focus on WBA’s core character values to develop students as leaders on and off the field. The development programs have been led by WBA Instructor, Adam Roser.

WBA was thrilled to host additional development programs this year as well: Spring Break Games, HitTrax Hitting Leagues, and the Vacation Camp!

Core program

WBA’s Core Program provides year-round mentoring. Young people who want to learn more about baseball are paired with a knowledgeable instructor who cares about each student’s life beyond the game. These mentor instructors teach life lessons emphasizing WBA’s core character values. The importance that WBA places on these values is communicated to parents, who also find support and friendship from our On Deck Director.

World Baseball Academy maintains a designated Scholarship Fund to which young people may apply to participate in the Core Program at no cost.

“The Core 30 Program has impacted my life by providing me with a positive male role model when I didn’t have one. Core 30 instilled in me the core traits of knowledge, respect, discipline, perseverance, integrity, and initiative. Through observing my mentors in the program, I have also picked up other important traits like leading with compassion and that volunteering in my community has a great impact on both the recipient and the volunteer. In whole, this program has taught me what it means to be a good man.”

Badges for baseball SUMMER CAMP

In partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne, WBA’s Badges for Baseball program, a nationwide initiative created by the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation has seen continued success. This camp creates a positive environment that helps strengthen relationships between police officers and youth within our community through baseball! Together with Boys & Girls Clubs, we hosted a six-week summer camp in June & July. This camp is a great place for kids to build friendships, learn WBA’s core character values, and of course play baseball. Additionally, camp is a time where WBA student interns & volunteers work on their leadership skills, guided by On Deck Instructor, Tim Petersen.

“The World Baseball Academy has been a terrific partner and their vision of developing leaders who make a positive impact is very similar to that of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation. It is about so much more than baseball and sport, but about teaching valuable life lessons through sport. The park we built with them in Fort Wayne is beautiful and the fact that it is being used so effectively and regularly by the WBA really hits the mark of what both of our organizations want to achieve.”

-Cal Ripken, Jr. Hall of Famer and Co-Founder of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation

One of my passions in law enforcement is connecting with the community, especially our youth. I love interacting with our youth in these “fun and educational “ settings because it allows the kids to see us as humans. When they see us as humans, I hope it allows us to be approachable and safe to them! Badges for Baseball is a program that does allow us to interact with the kids as police officers and humans! In doing so, I hope life long relationships are formed!

ADAPTIVE SERVICES

Baseball Camp is for Everyone

2022 was a year of impactful partnership between WBA, the YMCA, and Turnstone. This includes a one-day All Abilities Camp in the summer, multiple adaptive softball sessions, and a five-week long At Bat Camp in the fall! These camps provide individual support from staff and volunteers while encouraging teamwork and life skills.

“What the WBA is doing for my son and kids like him is just amazing” -Parent, At Bat Camp

“The YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne is incredibly grateful for our continued partnership with the World Baseball Academy. For the third year, the YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne, Turnstone, and the World Baseball Academy partnered to offer an Inclusive Baseball program, a program designed for those with physical, developmental, and intellectual disabilities, as well as their siblings and peers. Participants learned various baseball drills and played the game of Quickball on the adaptive Cal Ripken turf field, an incredible asset to our Fort Wayne community! The end of the season wrapped with a family day, complete with awards and yummy food. What a great way for everyone to be involved and celebrate inclusion! The program thrives due to dedicated volunteers attending weekly, ensuring participants needs are met and that everyone has opportunities to belong and achieve! The smiles of participants out on the baseball field fill your heart with joy. It’s truly a home run program!”

Providing a “Home Base”

In addition to programming partnerships, WBA is excited about new opportunities for facility usage partnerships as well! This year, we partnered with several groups to provide field access for their team/clinic to practice and play, including Special Olympics of Allen County, Alternative Baseball Organization, and Special Stars Baseball Clinic! These partnerships have given over 60 players a home base to practice!

“Partnering with WBA helps us expand the opportunities for youth with disabilities to access athletic opportunities. By participating in team sport experiences, youth and their peers are able to hone in on their technique and also benefit from the soft skills development sports opportunities provide. We are exceptionally grateful to collaborate with the WBA staff who have proven to be compassionate, patient, adaptable and engaging with everyone.”

“With the continued support of World Baseball Academy for the second year, and their generous addition of a second field rental, we were able to serve our community with even more volunteers, and provide an amazing clinic for even more participants. World Baseball Academy has given the Special Stars Baseball Clinic Program opportunities we never dreamed of, and we are beyond grateful.”

2 SCHOOL SYSTEMS

This has been a monumental year for World Baseball Academy’s STEM program! We hosted our STEM Summer Camp in June, where campers learned about data collection, angles, speed, running an experiment, and utilized our HitTrax machine! We continued a partnership with East Allen County Schools and expanded to include DeKalb Central Schools. WBA STEM served all fourth grade classrooms in these school systems. Our STEM Educational program includes three classroom sessions. These sessions are comprised of one lesson in each of the following areas: science, engineering, and math. The program concludes with a field trip to WBA’s ASH Centre which gets kids moving and has a focus on technology in WBA’s Baseball Lab.

Last school year all of our fourth grade students participated in the World Baseball Academy STEM Educational Program and we were thoroughly delighted with the outcome! The students loved the hands-on learning, the teachers were very excited because they could relate what the students were discovering to their classroom learning and projects. The consensus to repeat this field trip for this year’s fourth graders was overwhelmingly, yes! As a district with four elementary schools, we welcome the opportunity to be part of this learning experience. As we continue our STEM learning journey, we look forward to this becoming an annual field trip for our fourth graders. Thank you for all you do for students and STEM education.

Science, Technology, Engineering, Math... and Baseball!

World Baseball Academy’s STEM program is a way to connect with ALL kids through the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics of the game of baseball. Our fun, hands on “learning by doing” curriculum allows staff and volunteers to build relationships with young people while helping them become aware of future career paths and WBA’s core character values.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math are integral to baseball. Applications of geometry, aerodynamics, balance, gravity, velocity, transfer of energy, and math, measure every movement of every player. This creates endless statistical models that track progress and determine the elite. Baseball players excel when they understand what the numbers reveal and how the laws of physics apply to skill development and game strategy. STEM subjects therefore come easily to WBA’s baseball instructors, but that is not why World Baseball Academy includes STEM education in its programs. WBA uses STEM to ignite a desire for knowledge, a core character leadership value.

JUNIOR LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE

JLC Participant

-Rowan, JLC Participant

World Baseball Academy is also excited to grow the Junior Leadership Challenge, a developmental program for kids in grades K through 5. This challenge shows kids the importance of serving others and working towards a goal, having kids track volunteer time up to two hours. By volunteering and serving others, kids are demonstrating the WBA core character value of initiative. Once the student has reached two hours of volunteer activity, they write a two to three sentence reflection on their time volunteering and what they learned from it. The parent/guardian then sends the completed Junior Leadership Challenge to WBA, and the students receive a certificate and a free kid’s meal at Mitchell’s Sports & Neighborhood Grill!

Academy LEADERSHIP

WBA Leadership Academy is a six-stage program that launched in 2021 with the intention of helping high school students acquire leadership skills and knowledge through a series of stages to further enhance their leadership capacity. It aims to provide a “learning by doing” program focused on the development of servant-minded leadership.

Stages include mastering WBA’s core character values, spending time volunteering, leading, writing a reflection essay, and giving a presentation. We are excited to have 10 students in the program as of December 2022.

“The Leadership Academy taught me that I had more potential to make an impact in my community than I ever imagined. It was an experience that allowed me to recognize the leader in myself and build upon it. I have grown as a leader and as a person through the WBA Leadership Academy.”

LEADERSHIP BEYOND THE GAME

“WBA desires to be a positive influence in the life of every family that walks through our doors. We are committed to providing quality baseball instruction so that young people can develop their skills, thereby giving them the confidence needed to be successful on the field. We also desire to lead by example and create an environment of encouragement and strong leadership. We are committed to living out the core character values so that we can inspire the next generation to do the same. Together with you, we hope to see young people reach their full potential and be successful on and off the field!”

The Core 30 Program has done so many things for me over the last 8 years. It truly has been an amazing opportunity. When I was asked to give a quote and summarize my time being part of this program, I struggled to find the right words and ideas to properly describe it. A few things first came into my mind. Opportunity, safety, leadership, and family. This program has done all those things for me and my family. I am so glad to be able to say that I was part of an organization that has not only impacted my life, but many others as well. I don’t know where I would be today without the great leadership and mentorship I have received over these past years. The Core 30 Program gives kids the knowledge and leadership ability to be able to help improve themselves and all those around them. I am so proud to say that I have had the privilege of learning and growing from all these fantastic skills and mind sets.

Internship

My time here at the WBA has been great! The experiences that I have gone through during this internship have allowed me to have a true feeling of the business world while pursuing my Master’s degree. I have learned about many different aspects of what it takes to not only run a successful baseball facility, but a successful non-profit organization. Not only was I given the opportunity to make an impact on the WBA during this internship process, but the WBA had an impact on me. I have made great progress towards enhancing my personal and business skills, which will be very useful when pursuing any other jobs along my career path in the future.

- Jack, 2022 Intern, Sports Management

WBA is so thankful for our 2022 interns, who help make everything we do possible!

In 2022, we had 9 interns working in various areas! Interns enjoyed working with campers at several programs including Badges for Baseball, Summer Sliders, STEM Camp, and the Halloween Wiffle Ball Spooktacular! In addition to learning about general campus operations with our Director of Operations, interns worked with our Tournament Director to learn how tournament events are run and some worked with our Marketing Director on our Dinner on the Diamond fundraising event. A huge thanks for all of our 2022 WBA interns!

Did this experience help better prepare you for your future career?

“This internship definitely helped prepare me for my future career. No matter what job I end up doing, I will have to work with other businesses. Learning how to effectively communicate with other businesses and professionals was very important. I learned how to play a role in an organization and learned to be a versatile part of a team.

International Baseball Mission trips

In June of 2022, World Baseball Academy relaunched our International Baseball Missions effort in Nairobi, Kenya. In partnership with World Partners, Todd Mann, led a small group to work several communities creating a week of impact and memories! “International mission experiences often have the ability to radically alter the trajectory of an individual’s life. I feel blessed to lead these efforts as a smart part of World Baseball Academy’s initiatives to develop leaders who positively impact our world,” shares Todd Mann.

In July of 2022, the WBA was able to send a group of ten people to Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic. During the week long trip, the team lead baseball clinics, children’s ministry activities, and helped with service projects. The purpose of the trip was to come alongside pastors and organizations based in the DR to help build leaders in their communities. It was a life changing experience for all ten team members, as they experienced the cultural differences between the DR and the USA. Each left the trip with greater world perspectives, appreciation of how blessed we are with all we have in our country, and to see the importance of community and family in the DR.

World Baseball Academy was pleased to host the fifth annual Beyond The Game Leadership Luncheon on Monday, February 28th with guest speaker Drue Tranquill, linebacker for the Los Angeles Chargers and Fort Wayne native. The purpose of this event is to recognize and inspire area athletes in their leadership development both on and off the field. World Baseball Academy and our presenting sponsor Optimum Performance Sports (OPS) were excited to partner with 19 local high schools to highlight 77 area athletes who exemplify WBA’s core character values of integrity, knowledge, discipline, perseverance, respect, and initiative.

We would like to congratulate all award winners of the 2022 Beyond the Game Leadership Awards! Your leadership is seen and appreciated, and we can’t wait to see what you do next!

THE WBA ENDOWMENT FUND

As a lasting way to keep the WBA vision of leadership development alive several families stepped up to help create an endowment fund. This fund will help WBA operations continue to maintain and operate the ASH Centre campus as a vehicle for life change and leadership development for generations to come! With your help, we can ensure the WBA vision lives on here in Northeast Indiana and beyond.

WBA’s goal is to develop a $5 million endowment for the long-term sustainability of our mission and vision.
