London’s best of the best

Celebrating the best of the best since 2010! When I first thought of creating an event that celebrated the people, the businesses and the city that I had fallen in love with, I never imagined that the dream and reality would grow quite so quickly. The first London Lifestyle Awards were a huge success. Thousands of businesses were nominated and hundreds of thousands of people voted for their favourites, culminating in a hugely enjoyable night honouring the best lifestyle businesses in London. This book is an extension of the London Lifestyle Awards brand, a showcase that beautifully encapsulates why we do what we do; a constant reminder to everyone of the very best that London has to offer in terms of incredible lifestyle businesses. We hope you enjoy our learning about these wonderful businesses -they are in our opinion the very best of the best and you should get to know as many of them as you can.

From the first London Lifestyle Awards it was clear that even with over 4000 public nominations and a glittering array of celebrities and public figures in attendance, it was London itself that was the real star of the show. London leads the world in so many areas: art, fashion, tourism, hospitality, industry, finance, music, the list goes on and on. It is the reason the awards were created, to celebrate the people and businesses that make the city exceptional to the locals and visitors alike. The London Lifestyle Awards generate an overwhelming amount of support from across the capital - from the leaders in industry to a hugely engaged general public, there have been over one million votes cast since they began. 700 people, including a variety of celebrity guests and presenters, attend this very special gala evening. The national press will be in attendance, ensuring widespread coverage and guaranteed publicity for all our sponsors and partners. The Awards have become a key date on the London social calendar and are unique in that they not only allow a moment to reward our capital’s most successful and inspiring businesses but they also provide an opportunity for the lifestyle business community to mix with the great and good of the city. A host of famous faces have attended the Awards since its very beginning and return year on year. LONDON IS

FOOD

W

hen I look back at the last twenty years of working within hospitality in London, NYC and Miami, I feel the biggest industry change in any sector is that of the professional kitchen and chef. The food channel in the US reportedly makes more in advertising than the entertainment channel, The Great British Bake Off is the biggest heist of the year, and chefs are being celebrated as the new rock n’(sushi)roll. It is no longer just about Michelin stars in the restaurant industry. Chefs with the highest aspirations have upped their professional game in terms of lifestyle and have developed huge public profiles. What do they eat? Who do they like? Where do they go? What are they cooking today? We lap this up like a free dinner at Chiltern Firehouse.

We can perhaps blame the lovely Delia Smith in terms of influencing what we buy. Her recipes had the big supermarkets clamouring for the latest and greatest ingredients, and the emergence of the ‘foodie’ means that the average consumer is paying much more attention to culinary detail. Aspirational eating is now made so much easier for us. We can access an entire world of glorious recipes with one click in a search engine, and social media allows us to follow our gourmet idols, emulating their creations in full Instagram glory. We are wholly embracing the new, and welcoming the diversity of so many ethnicities into our kitchens, for which we have our London chef ‘squad’ to thank. While parts of the world want to build walls, this creative and skilled group of chefs are slapping each other on the back and inviting the new up-and-coming talent into their own kitchens, giving Joe Public a first class view. Never have professional chefs in London kitchens had more of a bond.Collaboration, community and charisma are at heights never seen before and it’s catching. London’s top chefs and those at the start of their journey are sharing recipes, tips, laughs, opinions, pictures, and weighing in on TV, politics and food. We follow them and give every dish they try a damn good go, often with hilariously bad results (yep, me). The capital is hotter than ever with London still at the forefront, being first choice for most chefs to come and learn, develop their craft and meet their peers. You only have to look at how many brands which

are created in the London dining scene, are then able to make the move overseas. Jason Atherton we doff our cap to you. This was made very apparent to me earlier this year when chef Sophie Michell took me along to a car park in Soho. It’s not her regular hangout. With our faces planted to our phone screens, both of us followed the ‘walk through’ video provided in place of an actual invitation with address. There we found Carl Clarke, one of the founders of ChicknSours, throwing a pre-opening party for his new place. Carl was DJ’ing whilst his partner, staff, peers and friends were celebrating, dancing and drinking fabulous cocktails. Sat on a bench soaking all of this up along with crowd was the esteemed Pierre Koffman, eating unbelievably superb fried chicken with his fingers out of a paper tray. A culinary mash-up of people you would certainly never have had 10 years ago. As our wonderful Mayor has pointed out, ‘Our doors are open’, and amongst our chef set, it seems theirs have been flung wide for a long time. We can only hope that this continues, and we acknowledge the riches on offer when we allow a multicultural city to flourish. Let it be heard; London Calling!

LONDON IS OPEN... When we started this journey in 2009 I was convinced that London would soon be considered the greatest city in the World. I already thought it was but we needed to go through a phenomenal Olympics for this to be the consensual opinion and finally put New York into 2nd place. London has been climbing the

Lifestyle charts for a number of years as we have benefit from attracting the best talent from across the

country and also the rest of the

world. We have seen people with

immense raw talent to the season professional descend London to either perfect the craft and serve Londoners with a plethora of

exciting fashionable excellence. We now can boast the best restaurants and bars in the world and luxury

spa’s and beauty facilities are to be

celebrated and our coffee and gym culture is catching our American

cousins. But would we have achieved this without the French and Italians,

the Indians and Australians the South Africans and the Polish.

London has become the cultural hub of the world, we have become an aspirational city where creativity is at the forefront of our lives and if we do not keep developing and improving as individuals and as a community someone else will take our place. The eclectic mix of the population has clearly helped. As the London Lifestyle Awards it is not our job to say whether the Brexit vote is good or bad for the country it’s not our job to say whether it’s good or bad for London but it is our job to celebrate and promote the best this City must offer. For a long time, London, has encouraged immigration, we have had international advertising campaigns for generations promoting the city across all continents highlighting the virtues of living and working here. We have become the global financial centre creating incredible wealth for individuals and businesses and they deserve and require the finest hospitality, fashion and entertainment. Long may this be the case, to continue to prosper both creatively and financially we need the best of the worlds talent or future talent. Seven years after creating the London Lifestyle Awards it’s again an important message that we must shout as loud as possible. London is a great city, the greatest and I believe we will hold that position for a while yet but we do need to tell the world that we are still here, we are still amazing and please come and join us.

LONDON IS FASHION

by HANNAH LORD

The London fashion scene is another beautifully crafted

More notable than ever in today’s global landscape, is

string to our city’s extensive bow. As the envy across

London’s continued strength and resolve. Across all

the world, London holds iconic status as influential trend-leaders in the fashion industry. From New York, to Paris, to Milan, London Fashion Week is considered the one-to-watch for emerging talent and style innovation. The source of this remains consistent with that which we see across the lifestyle industry as a whole, and that which continues to make us incredibly proud… From cultural inclusion to gender orientation, London’s spirit is above all one of diversity. It takes immense pride in its many unique movements, all of which are given the freedom of expression and energy that cannot be found anywhere else. It is this energy that offers designers the ever-evolving, rich world of subcultures from which to draw inspiration. Still remembered for the iconic global impact of the ‘Swinging Sixties’, London has firmly positioned itself as the epicentre of youth culture and style, and is considered today more influential than ever, as it continues to evolve and regenerate, when others stand still. It isn’t all hedonistic new-age movements however. There is an equally celebrated pride that we have in our Savile Row tailors, our beautiful shirt-makers, and the attention to detail of those who know how to immaculately dress. There is a real sense of inclusion, as every taste, style and lifestyle is seemingly accepted, with influences gleaned from each. Without limiting by dictation, the city allows a free scope for innovation, allowing styles and trends to naturally curate and emerge.

lifestyle sectors, but certainly on the London fashion scene, the most inspiring creativity comes in times of difficulty. From post-war Britain to current government uncertainty, London persistently regroups, bands together with new ideas, and emerges stronger than ever. All eyes are now on London to see its next move, and our eyes are certainly on those who continue to make it great.

ODABASH Starting her career as a swimwear model in Italy where she modelled a variety of unflattering, garish swimsuits, Melissa launched her own brand of traditionally cut swimwear in timeless prints and colours in 1999. Designing the best-selling bikini in the Victoria Secret catalogue and named by British Vogue as ‘The Ferraris of the bikini world’ shortly after, Melissa has been credited with ‘re-introducing high fashion into the swimwear world’ with complementary ranges including everything from beachwear, hats, ready-to-wear and kids wear. Having been established for well over a decade, her insightful know-how and discerning use of superior fabrics demonstrates the skill and time that it has taken to really become a master in her industry. Melissa’s innate sense of what women are looking from in their swim and beachwear has led to various successful collaborations with Couture designer Julien Macdonald and has seen her work with the likes of The Elton John Aids Foundation & Future Dreams Breast Cancer Charity, with whom she launched her debut mastectomy swimwear line in 2015. The Wolf & Badger ethos is to promote, support and retail only the most exciting independent fashion, jewellery, accessories and interior design brands from the UK and beyond. With stores now in Mayfair, Notting Hill and online, Wolf & Badger is the essential destination to Discover New Designers!

House of Hackney was founded in London in 2010 by husband- and –wife team Javvy M Royle and Frieda Gormley. Originally founded as an interiors label, the founders’ quest was ‘to take the beige out of interiors’ with an emphasis on quality, design and Made In England credentials. After a decade of bland minimalism, the brand captured the Zeitgeist with prints and products that are steeped in tradition but are bold and subversive for a truly modern statement.

THE CLOCK Welcome to The Clock, a private members’ club dedicated to nurturing inner and outer strength through the scientific alignment of nutrition, exercise and relaxation. The Clock’s philosophy of “taking time to make time” comes to life in its offering of personalised, supervised training sessions: boxing classes are taught in a wood-panelled library, while barre and yoga classes taken to the accompaniment of a cello or baby grand piano in the Music Room. An on-site chef prepares meals tailored to individual nutrition plans in a vaulted farm-style kitchen, while members are invited to work, unwind or host business meetings in the Drawing Room. The Clock is home to the Time Piece, a revolutionary piece of exercise equipment set to disrupt a category dominated by functional ‘sweatbox’ gyms. 2.3m in diameter and fashioned entirely from steel, aluminium and chrome, the Time Piece is a feat of industrial engineering around which a focused-body workout can be completed in just 15 minutes. Forcing a continuous flow of movement that recruits muscle fibres in a way unachievable with conventional training equipment, the Time Piece unites art and science to drive long-lasting results.

THE LIBRARY Pioneers of the 15 minute HIT sessions Welcome to The Library, the best private members training club offering unlimited personal training, tailored nutrition and outstanding results. Based on a university study, The Library’s system shows an average fat loss of 7.5 lbs and muscle gain of 3 lbs in just 12 days, training only 15 minutes per day. Our system leaves you with extraordinary results and, just as important, time for you. Combine your programme with the class of your choice - a chilled yoga, strengthening Pilates or de-stressing boxing session. Or simply enjoy the calm reading area - your space for relaxed, intelligent thinking.

THE THIRD SPACE The Third Space opened in May 2001 in the heart of Soho, to deliver an alternative space dedicated to a new form of healthy hedonism. It was the first Club to acknowledge that true health is an integrated affair – bringing together the best experts and facilities to cater for all requirements in exercise, health, medicine, nutrition, and fun. This is no faceless facility. It’s a characterful, vibrant place that offers a wide range of services including personal training, pilates, yoga, climbing, boxing, classes, an altitude chamber and swimming pool, along with a leading medical centre with some of the best practitioners in the country. In April 2011, The Third Space embarked on the next stage of its evolution, with the second Club opening in Marylebone boasting a luxury spa, and the same quality and ‘cool factor’ that is to be expected from The Third Space.

Located at the very centre of London itself, on the North Bank of the River Thames at the base of Covent Garden whose pulsating atmosphere has pleasured many generations of the good, the great and the glamorous. The Savoy boasts the award winning Beaufort Bar for pushing mixology to its boundaries and not forgetting the original and the best - the legendary Savoy American Bar is the longest surviving original in London, still serving a popular cocktail from that era, the ‘Hanky Panky’.
