TRUNK (HOUSE
The rebirth of “Yamaji”-a traditional geisha training house and culinary institution in Tokyo. TRUNK (HOUSE) is the second hospitality concept of TRUNK in Tokyo, opened in August 2019 in the picturesque district of Kagurazaka. Kagurazaka, a central district of Tokyo located on a hill, is known as one of the most picturesque areas of the city, staging an improbable merge of purely traditional Japanese ‘art de vivre’ and quaint Parisian atmosphere.
It reflects Tokyo’s extraordinary capability to absorb the new and old, odd, and familiar, single and multiple to create and recreate unprecedent genre-straddling cultures. Indeed, for TRUNK, Kagurazaka represents the ideal playground to imagine and implement an innovative hospitality and design project. Here, the ambition was to revive the spirit of “Yamaji”, a former Geisha training house and ryotei (traditional Japanese gastronomic restaurant), by turning the place into a unique town house style hotel only available for full privatization.
Located in a typical blind stone path dubbed as ‘hide-and-seek’ alley, “Yamaji “epitomizes this very exclusive and elevating way to socially interact, that we can call “Tokyo Salon culture”.
