2024 World Luxury Awards Event Magazine - AYANA Bali
BRANDON LOURENS Chief Executive Officer
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all of this year’s outstanding award winners. Your exceptional talent and dedication have set new standards in the luxury hospitality industry, and it is an honor to recognize your remarkable achievements.
Reflecting on the past year, 2024 has been a period of significant growth and innovation within our industry. Healthy competition and an unwavering commitment to excellence have driven us to new heights, further enhancing the level of service and quality that define luxury hospitality.
In response to increasing demand and growing global interest in celebrating the best of luxury hospitality, we are proud to be hosting two events for our 18th annual gala celebration –
at AYANA BALI in Indonesia and GALGORM in Northern Ireland. This expansion marks an important milestone, allowing us to honor exceptional contributions across different regions and venues.
Looking to the future, we are excited to continue this momentum as we continue to source and provide desirable destinations to host our events, ensuring that excellence in luxury hospitality is celebrated consistently and inclusively worldwide.
We extend our sincere gratitude to all attendees for joining us at these prestigious events. Our deepest appreciation goes to everyone whose efforts have made these gatherings possible. Here’s to a year of continued excellence and enduring success.
ANTON
PEROLD Managing Director
Welcome to our annual awards ceremony. To all our winners, congratulations on this fantastic achievement!
We are excited to host two events this year, providing our participants with a choice of destination and ensuring that all our clients have the opportunity to attend. Additionally, offering two venues allows our clients the option of a shorter flight.
The World Luxury Awards will continue to provide you with high-quality marketing materials to give you a competitive edge and showcase your property in the best possible light. We successfully launched our new look website with a few added features and online profile improvements; more than 700,000 votes
were cast in the voting season on the new platform this year.
We are pleased to introduce a new award exclusively for properties that have entered their hotel, spa, and restaurant. The Hospitality Excellence Award, as it will be called, will be presented for the first time this year, and we are confident it will become a highly soughtafter accolade.
To all our sponsors and specifically France 24, thank you so much for the support that you have given us for so many years. A huge thank you to AYANA Bali, Indonesia and Galgorm, Northern Ireland, for hosting our Gala ceremonies, without you these events would not be possible.
The idea was ignited when respected hotelier, Brandon Lourens, wanted to enter some of the hotels in his hotel management portfolio in an awards program but could not find a luxury awards program which operated in the hotel sector. The idea was brainstormed with his management team and the company was founded.
With its original head-office in Stellenbosch, South Africa, the company proved to fill a void for a bespoke luxury hotel awards company which brought distinction to that segment of the market.
inSPArations, a monthly spa magazine featuring all spa participants was launched.
A new updated website is launched with a modern fresh streamlined design.
Two Gala Ceremonies are hosted at Ayana Resort Bali, Indonesia, and Galgorm, Northern Ireland.

EXPERIENCE BALINESE CULTURE AT AYANA BALI
INCLUDING ONE OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST PLACES 2024
Guests seeking an unforgettable cultural experience in Bali should put AYANA Bali on the top of their list. Nestled on the expansive Jimbaran cliffside, this stunning resort embodies a profound respect for Balinese culture, celebrating the region’s craftsmanship, creativity, and culinary delights.
AYANA Bali’s newly-opened cultural and events center, SAKA Museum, has just been recognized in TIME’s prestigious World’s Greatest Places 2024. Integrating Bali's rich history with state-of-the-art facilities, SAKA Museum is establishing itself as a centerpiece for the island’s spiritual and cultural heritage.
Committed to preserving and promoting Bali’s vibrant legacy, SAKA’s inaugural exhibition, "Walking
Among Giants," showcases a collection of ogohogoh, giant effigies paraded during Bali’s New Year 'Day of Silence' Celebration, Nyepi. This collaborative masterpiece, crafted by Balinese communities and artists, vividly portrays iconic figures from Balinese folklore and legend.
SAKA Museum seamlessly blends Bali’s rich traditions with its modern ethos, a harmony echoed throughout the museum’s architectural design. The award-winning Napp Studio & Architects has artfully captured Bali’s natural beauty in the museum’s layout. From the island’s tranquil night sky, reflected in the light-studded ceiling, and volcanic rocks in the jasper and agate materials, to water caves evoked through numerous pools and fountains, the museum conveys the deep connection between Balinese culture and the natural world.
Coming soon, SAKA eagerly anticipates the launch of new exhibits, including a showcase exploring Subak, the UNESCO-recognized water management system established in Bali's rice fields during the 11th century and still in use today. Another upcoming attraction will feature an innovative light and sound dome installation that offers a fresh interpretation of Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence.
A visit to SAKA Museum should be timely arranged with a visit to Kampoeng Bali, nearby via AYANA’s tram. Kampoeng Bali offers a unique glimpse into Balinese life through a buffet of local cuisine crafted in traditional outdoor kitchens. Enjoy captivating cultural performances, including a sunset ceremony, Kecak dance, and fire dances.
SAKA Museum is open to AYANA Bali hotel guests for free, with tickets available for public visitors at sakamuseum.org. Reservations are suggested for all visitors.
Kampoeng Bali operates on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with additional openings during the full moon. Reservations can be made via Whatsapp (+62 811-3811-7690) or by e-mail to fb.reservation.bali@ayana.com.

GIORDANO FAGGIOLI General Manager
Tell us where you are from – where did you grow up and how did you end up at AYANA Bali?
I am originally from the city of Ferrara in Italy, a place known for its Renaissance history, good food, and universities. Growing up, I was always fascinated by the world of hospitality and tourism, which led me to pursue a degree in hotel management. My journey in the hospitality industry has taken me across various continents, and I have had the pleasure of working with some of the most renowned hotels. I was thrilled when the opportunity to join AYANA Bali came up. The resort’s reputation for excellence and its unique blend of luxury and traditional Balinese charm made it an irresistible offer.
What inspired you to pursue a career in hotel management?
From a young age, I was captivated by the idea of traveling, the luxury of hotels, and creating memorable experiences for people. I remember family vacations where the warmth and attentiveness of the hotel staff made a significant impact on our stay. These experiences inspired me to pursue a career where I could be a part of creating such moments for others. The dynamic nature of hotel management, where no two days are the same, and the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life, further fueled my passion for this industry.
You’re sure to have traveled quite a bit, what is your favourite place in the world to visit, and why?
While I have had the privilege of visiting many incredible places around the world, one of my favorite destinations is Chiang Mai, Thailand. The city’s blend of traditional culture and modern innovation is truly unique. I am particularly drawn to the serene beauty of its temples and gardens, but at the same time, the buzzing streets with shopping and dining. Chiang Mai offers a peaceful escape and a deep cultural experience as well as ever-evolving and busy streets for food and shopping, that always leaves me inspired and rejuvenated.
Being a General Manager is more than just managing staff, tell us about a time you went above and beyond to please a strange/difficult client request.
One memorable instance was when we had a guest who was celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. They had a specific request to have a private dinner on the beach, replicating the exact menu and setting from their honeymoon. We did not have any record of their honeymoon details, so we had to get creative. After several conversations and some detective work, we managed to recreate the menu and atmosphere based on their memories. We involved our culinary team to prepare dishes that matched their descriptions and sourced decorations reminiscent of that era. The look of joy and nostalgia on their faces was priceless, and it reminded me of why I love this industry.
When it comes to team leadership and morale, what special qualities do you need to exude to succeed?
Effective team leadership in the hospitality industry requires a blend of empathy, communication, and vision. Empathy allows you to understand and address the needs and concerns of your team, fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment. Clear and open communication ensures that everyone is aligned with the goals and expectations, while also feeling valued and heard. Lastly, having a strong vision and leading by example inspires the team to strive for excellence and take pride in their work. Balancing these qualities helps in building a motivated and cohesive team that can deliver exceptional guest experiences.
Lastly, what makes it special for AYANA Bali to host yet another World Luxury Awards gala ceremony?
Hosting the World Luxury Awards gala ceremony is a prestigious honor for AYANA Resort Bali. It underscores our commitment to excellence in luxury hospitality and provides an opportunity to showcase the unique qualities that set us apart. The event brings together industry leaders and experts from around the world, creating a platform for networking and sharing best practices. For our team, it is a moment of pride and recognition for their hard work and dedication. Moreover, it highlights Bali as a premier luxury destination, contributing to the local tourism industry and cultural exchange.

JORY MONTILLA
Director of Spa & Wellness
Tell us where you are from – where did you grow up and how did you end up at AYANA Bali?
I grew up on a beautiful island of the Philippines in the city of Golden Friendship Cagayan de Oro, where my passion for hospitality and wellness was nurtured by the natural beauty and tranquil environment of my province. My journey into the hospitality industry began when I joined the first wellness center in my hometown delivering Chinese Foot Reflexology at the early age of 20, and at 21 years old I left my country to explore international luxury spas overseas. My career expanded from spa therapist to trainer, to becoming a director. I was successfully involved in spa operations and management across Maldives, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Switzerland, New Zealand, Jordan, Indonesia, and the Philippines, which then eventually led me to AYANA Bali, where I was captivated by the resort's commitment to luxury and exceptional guest experiences and extending wellness offerings to their guests, which is a vital role that I have to deliver.
What ignited your passion for the wellness industry?
My passion for the wellness industry was ignited during my early years when I experienced the profound benefits of reflexology to our overall health and well-being. Witnessing how this therapy can transform people's lives—combined with a deep-seated desire to promote physical and mental well-being—inspired me to pursue a career dedicated to healing and rejuvenation.
What trends are you seeing in the spa and wellness industry, and how is your spa adapting?
In the spa and wellness industry, several key trends are emerging. These include a growing focus on holistic wellness, incorporating mental health and mindfulness practices, and the increasing demand for personalized, tailored, and local experiences. Additionally, sustainable
and eco-friendly practices are becoming a top priority among both consumers and providers.
At AYANA Spa Bali, we are adapting by integrating wellness programs that encompass mental, emotional, and physical health, offering our incredible thalassotherapy pool, bespoke treatment plans tailored to individual needs, sound healing therapy, a variety of readily available mindfulness & fitness activities, and wellness cuisine that caters to the appetite of guests that wants to stay in shape even on their holidays, all in a place surrounded by an amazing nature, contributing to a complete wellness experience. We are also adopting sustainable practices, such as using eco-friendly products, supporting communities like local vendors and suppliers, and promoting local brands that align with our commitment to environmental responsibility.
How do you create a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere for guests?
At AYANA Spa Bali, creating a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere for our guests is a cornerstone of our philosophy. We achieve this through a combination of thoughtful design, personalized service, and carefully curated experiences. Our spa environment is meticulously designed with an expansive open space that captures the gentle ocean breeze and surrounding Mother Nature views.
The spa comprises a magnificent reception area to welcome your arrival. Our staff are trained to provide warm, attentive, and personalized service, ensuring each guest feels valued and cared for from the moment they arrive. We also enhance the ambiance with gentle music, aromatherapy scents, beautiful fresh flower decorations, and soft lighting, which together help stimulate the senses and create a holistic experience of relaxation and peace. Every detail, from the comfort of our treatment rooms to the quality of our products, is chosen to foster a sanctuary where guests can escape, unwind, and rejuvenate.
What's your favorite spa treatment, and why?
My favorite spa treatment is the Balinese Massage, a hallmark of our offerings at AYANA Spa Bali. Combining rhythmic techniques, varied pressure points, and aromatic essential oils, this treatment alleviates muscle tension and induces a deep sense of relaxation and well-being. I appreciate how it holistically addresses both physical and mental stress, providing a truly rejuvenating experience that embodies the essence of Balinese wellness traditions.
If you could tell every person to do one important thing for their wellness every single day, what would it be?
If I could impart one crucial piece of advice for daily wellness, it would be to practice mindfulness. Taking just a few moments each day to be fully present—whether through meditation, deep breathing, or simply pausing to appreciate your surroundings—can significantly reduce stress, enhance mental clarity, and promote overall well-being.
This simple, yet powerful practice anchors you in the present moment, helping to cultivate a sense of peace and balance amidst the busyness of everyday life.
TOBY DALE Director of Culinary Operations
Tell us where you are from – where did you grow up and how did you end up at AYANA Bali?
I’m originally from England and grew up in South West Wiltshire. I moved to Australia when I was 21 and after working and living for ten years there, I transferred with Hyatt Hotels and worked in Shanghai, Beijing, Jakarta, Tianjin, and Macau. After 20 years, I left the Hyatt group and worked in Korea, Vietnam, and Singapore, so I have been fortunate to have a well-travelled career to date. I have always had a plan with my family to eventually settle in Bali, and when I was offered a position at AYANA Bali, it was the perfect fit.
What sparked your passion for cooking, and how did you develop your culinary style?
I always wanted to travel and, when I was young, being a chef was a great way to do that. Once I started at college and working in the kitchen, it was immediately clear that I was happy with my career choice.
Who are your culinary heroes, and what have you learned from them?
Marco Pierre White, Paul Bocuse, Michel and Albert Roux. I have all their books, which I read cover to cover, and learned that most of their dishes are simple, just extremely well executed. It’s a reminder that the basic fundamental techniques are still important today.
Can you share a memorable moment or dish that defined your career?
I have had the opportunity and privilege to cook for and meet many people. Meeting Michel Roux in Macau and having dinner with him is a memory I won’t forget, as you could just feel the passion he had when talking about cooking.
How does it feel to be recognized with awards and accolades, such as the World Luxury Restaurant Awards?
Awards are always good as they recognize the achievements of the entire team, keeping everyone motivated and proud of their hard work.

MAKING OF TROPHIES
Each year the World Luxury Awards offers our prestigious winners an opportunity to order our range of exclusive merchandise. Our trophies are handcrafted in Cape Town, South Africa, and distributed globally.
We offer a range of trophies, miniature trophies and plaques for each division that form part of the World Luxury Awards.
Our World Luxury Hotel Awards Trophy is a solid bronze trophy with polished brass details on a Beachwood base. This trophy was designed in collaboration with a local art foundry namely,
Sculpture Casting Services, a highly specialized foundry, casting from the smallest to the largest sculptures ever cast in Africa. The family business was founded in the 90's by Robert Knight, who was later joined by his two brothers Warren Knight and Bruce Knight. The foundry has grown from small beginnings to one of the largest fine-art foundries in Africa.
The team at Sculpture Casting Services also formed part of the team that worked on the statue of Nelson Mandela, a large bronze sculpture of the former President of South Africa, located in Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton, South Africa.
A traditional casting method for fine art bronze sculpture - "Lost Wax Casting" - is preferred, where the sculpture is first made from wax and then encased with sillicone rubber and resin jacket. Once the mould is made, the wax model is melted and drained away and molten bronze is poured into the mould.
The beautiful Beachwood bases are made by spinning wood on a lathe and carving gently into it, as soon as the artisan feels he has reached the shaped he requires, the wooden bases are then sanded and oiled by hand to give a smooth luxurious feel to the surface wood that will last for many years to come. A local brass-smith and master sculptor, Leslie Adonis and his small team then put all the finishing touches on our hotel trophies by hand as well as manufacture the spa, restaurant and travel trophies.
Our spa, restaurant and travel trophies are made by means of a Chemical Etching Process which allows
metal parts to be produced without any structural defects by using computer-aided design software, along with photography and chemistry.
Prior to chemical etching, the brass is cut to size and cleaned. A photosensitive material is then applied and once it is coated, the sheet is put into an exposure unit and exposed to UV light.
Thereafter the trophies are polished and meticulously assembled. Each trophy is also refined with a personalised engraving, showcasing each establishment's name and category won. Every trophy goes through our inspection process and is then delivered directly to your property.
We have recently also released a range of miniature trophies which we feel is a well-received addition to our range of merchandise.
In 2023 a new modern trophy option was added to our range of exclusive winner merchandise. These new trophies have each iconic trophy design engraved into crystal glass, using sub-surface laser technology.
Sub-surface laser engraving works by using a very strong local temperature gradient to treat the specific point in the crystal glass with thermal stress, which results in a small fracture (bubble) at the point of precision.
Once many of these small fractures are combined it creates an image. For the laser beam to create micro fractures within the material, in this case glass, it must possess an essential property: very high optical transparency. This is why our new set of trophies are made from crystal glass.

I was born in Durban, South Africa, after high school I studied Food&Nutrition for 4 years. In my final year I was lucky to experience 4 days working as a stewardess on the QE2 from Durban via Cape Town to Namibia. On completing my studies I went to Germany where I worked for 3 years in a castle on Lake Constance, during that time I travelled around Europe and went to the USA a few times. My role at the castle was diverse; I was a chef for the restaurant, worked at the high-end
disco on weekends and helped in all areas since it was also a function venue.
I settled in London in 1995; with my food-related qualifications not being recognised, rather than mopping floors at Greater Ormond St. Hospital or prepping pizza’s at the London Zoo, I opted for office work which was far more rewarding, especially my last role at Marks & Spencer as a Management Secretary. I met and married a South African while in London, in 2001 we returned to Cape Town where I helped him start up an internet service providing company. We divorced in 2009 and I found myself starting out again in the work force with a 5 and a 2-year old, it was challenging, however I became a Senior Business Developer at Toshiba, selling photocopiers – not my dream role, but it certainly helped pay the bills!
In 2015 I had a chance meeting with Brandon Lourens who decided I would be the perfect person to help him launch the World Luxury Restaurant
Awards. I have had an amazing journey with World Luxury Awards, many of the skills I have acquired since leaving formal education were self-taught –anything is possible if you are keen enough to learn and have a desire to achieve something.
I am extremely blessed to have met a wonderful man who loves to travel, we were engaged in Hawaii this year and will be returning next year to explore more. I am keen to see more of Asia having only been to Vietnam so far, Bali was on my list as is Thailand – mostly for their food! I have always wanted to visit New Zealand, Egypt and Brazil and although I have been to Australia, it is so vast, I would hope to return.
I have the option to live in the UK or the USA with close family living there, but when it comes to the best place in the world to live, hands down for so many reasons, it remains Cape Town, South Africa. If you have read this far and have never been, I hope that you will take my advice and come to experience it yourself!
