Going
n e e r G We know you love travel and, much like the Best in Travel team, take planes as you once took trains.
The trouble is our travel addiction isn’t great for the environment (make no mistake: carbon emissions from planes are speeding up global warming).
GORILLA TREK AT VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK IN RWANDA
Fortunately for those of us who care care about the environment but aren’t quite ready to swap that fortnight in Costa Rica for Cumbria, responsible tourism is all the rage. As consumers we now expect airlines, hotels, tour operators et al to embrace sustainability in their offerings. All told, with a lile thought we can travel to a greener future. The emerald hue is evidently en vogue and, fingers crossed, this is one travel trend that’s here to stay….
Be careful whose pocket you line By this, we mean supporting, small locally owned and run hotels, shops and tour guides, thereby puing money into local pockets.
Don’t get carried away trying to get the best deal Haggling in markets and souks etc can be a lot of fun, but keep in mind that the £5 you’re saving could feed the vendor’s entire family for an entire week.
Here’s how to have an ethical, environmentally friendly holiday experience…

TAKING THE GUILT OUT OF YOUR TRIP WITH BEST IN TRAVEL’S TOP TIPS
Make sure you know what’s happening in the region you’re visiting
Learn to say no
For instance if there’s a water shortage – especially in Africa and desert destinations – keep showers to a minimum and reuse water boles wherever possible.
Be responsible
When travelling in Africa and Asia, chances are you’ll receive requests from small children for a biro or some other small item. Refuse. Your potential act of generosity actually only serves to encourage begging and keeps children out of school. If you really want to help the local kids, why not make a donation to a local school or health centre instead?
Leave animals, artefacts, plants and places as you find them for all to enjoy. Our message? Don’t discard rubbish irresponsibly
Going
Green
It’s all about balance Balance out the damage done by your flight (and thus avoid a diatribe from eco-warriors about how your holidays are destroying the planet) by offseing your carbon emissions. Websites such as Climate Care (www.climatecare.org) and Carbon Neutral Company (www.carbonneutral.com) will calculate the carbon emissions made by your flight. You can then offset this by making a donation to forest planting schemes or energy saving projects in developing countries.
Boom line? If you follow the above advice, you’ll leave you with more than tan lines: you’ll depart knowing you’ve done the right thing…

For fantastic wildlife viewing, visit Tortuguero National Park where you’ll get to see sloths, toucans, crocodiles and green turtles before heading into the cloud forest to spot the abundant birdlife, including the resplendent quetzal. But no maer where you travel in Costa Rica, the branches overheard are alive with criers galore.

You don’t have to travel too far from home to find a great wildlife experience. Europe's wildlife may not be as celebrated as much as other more exotic destinations, but trust Best in Travel: it is no less impressive. The archipelago's most famous visitor, Charles Darwin, began to form his theory of evolution here and it’s easy to see why. With birds and animals that are found nowhere else on earth, and which are completely unafraid of humans, the Galapagos Islands are a wildlife experience like no other.
Get ready to be blown away by the Galápagos Islands' unique wildlife: swim with sea lions, watch sea iguanas blow salt from their noses and see the famous finches, whose unique beaks revealed the secrets of evolution to Charles Darwin.

If you are a wildlife lover and want to spend some golden time in wilderness, then India is an incredible destination to visit owing to its 450 wildlife sanctuaries, 99 national parks and 40 tiger reserves surrounded by a wide range of lush green and exotic flora. To glimpse the Royal Bengal Tiger, take a jaunt to Jim Corbe National Park, Uarakhand. India’s oldest national park was first established in 1936 as the Hailey National Park. In the mid-1950s, the park was dedicated to the legendary hunter-turned-conservationist Corbe. Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, the 500 square kilometres of Corbe have a wide variety of terrain, from sal forests to marshes.
In addition to tigers, you're likely to spot leopards, jungle cats, fishing cats, sloth bears, jackals, Bharal, goral, Himalayan tahr, serow, chital, sambal and barking deer. Corbe is also known as ‘elephant park’ because of its large number of wild elephants: the Ramganga River is one of the best places to spot them.

rwAndA There’s only one place in the world where you can look a mountain gorilla in the eye and that place is the Virunga Mountains – a chain of volcanoes which runs along the north of Rwanda, the south-west of Uganda and a stretch of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Here – if lady luck is on your side – you’ll find around 800 mountain gorillas. One caveat: geing up close and personal with the mightiest primates doesn’t come cheap as the Rwandan government doubled the fees for gorilla encounters from US$750 to US$1,500 a head earlier this year.
However should the steep price prove perturbing, keep in mind that the money you are shelling out goes towards safeguarding the gorilla population (10 years ago, Rwanda was home to fewer than 60 gorillas). More than this, you’re guaranteed a moment that you’ll remember for the rest of your life – something the great Sir David Aenborough can aest to. The veteran broadcaster and naturalist famously recounted in his 1978 Life On Earth series that meeting Rwandan gorillas was “one of the most exciting encounters of my life. There is more meaning and mutual understanding in exchanging a glance with a gorilla than any other animal I know.”

WHAT TO WEAR ON
SAFARI
Make sure that you are packing correctly to get the most out of your adventure in the great outdoors.
Blend in The best way to get up close and personal with wildlife is to blend in with your surroundings as much as possible. To this end, avoid wearing bright colours (bright is not right when on safari) and opt instead for neutrals – think greens, browns and khakis – which help you to blend in with the environment and hide dust and dirt.
Pack light “Travel like Ghandi, with simple clothes, open eyes and an uncluered mind.” So said Rick Steves – an American author and television personality, passionate about travel. Rick is right. A bag stuffed with belongings isn’t going to ‘make’ your trip. Quite the opposite: more stuff, simply equals more stress.
Keep it casual The African outback is not a catwalk. Keep it casual and comfortable with tee shirts, long sleeved shirts, shorts, hiking boots, and athletic socks to keep blisters at bay.

WHAT TO WEAR ON
SAFARI
Sensible shoes This is a non-negotiable. Safari walks can be long, plus you need to be climb in and out of the safari vehicle meaning comfortable foot-wear (think trainers) is essential.
Layer up Dress like an onion when on safari as temperatures can be cool on morning game drives, blazing hot in the aernoon and chilly again at night. Layers allow you to remove clothing to make yourself comfortable as the temperature changes.
Hat and scarf A hat always comes in handy. It oen gets hot and dusty on safari, so a hat will protect you from the heat and your hair from the dust. Meanwhile a scarf can be used to wipe dust off yourself or your camera lens as well as keeping you warm.

BEST IN TRAVEL
Camera
Sunglasses
Going on a safari is a once in a lifetime experience so you’ll want to bring a good camera with a zoom lens, with which to capture memories to share with your family and friends back home. Keep in mind that everything can go very fast while on a safari so get your camera ready and use pre-seings – this will ensure you don’t spend the 30 seconds the elephant took crossing the road trying to figure out how your camera works. Lastly, pack a few extra baeries because the power cuts are quite common in the bush.
Sunglasses are an essential accessory when on safari. The sun is very intense and harsh so it is important to protect your eyes. Best in Travel suggests investing in a pair of polarized sunglasses: you’ll be able to spot to interesting wild animals easily, even with the sun glaring at its best.
WHAT TO WEAR ON
SAFARI
Swimsuit Do throw in a swimsuit if your lodge has a pool. A refreshing swim is the perfect way to wind down and relax aer a long hot day of gorilla trekking or game viewing.
Forget the formal wear for dinner Formal wear is not necessary as most lodges and camps have a relaxed dress code. By all means, bring a smart, clean outfit to wear to dinner in the evening, but there is no need to go too formal – even the most luxurious of lodges don't expect you to dress up at night.
First Aid Don’t forget to pack all your prescription medications as well as a well stocked first aid kit, as you'll be in very remote places. Items to include are sunscreen, aer sun lotion, bug sprays, allergy medication and a good moisturiser if you’re going on safari during the dry season (typically June through to October).
A smile Follow the above rules and you’ll be wearing more than just clothes on your safari – you’ll be wearing a huge smile.

WAYS TO WATCH WILDLIFE SAFELY
H Y
No maer how many times you’ve watched wildlife on TV, nothing compares to geing up close and personal with animals in their natural environment. However the safety of these these animals, as well as your safety, depends on everyone using good judgment and following these simple guidelines… Know before you go No two parks are the same. Each wildlife area has specific guidelines, including minimum wildlife viewing distances and food storage requirements. Be sure to take a few minutes to review the park’s rules.
Do not disturb Remember that it’s illegal to feed, touch, tease, frighten, or intentionally disturb wildlife. Wild animals are, as the name suggests, wild and can be unpredictable when they’re disturbed or surprised.
Keep your eyes on the road When on the road, always follow the speed limits and watch for wildlife that may dart out onto the road. When you want to stop to watch wildlife, pull your vehicle completely off of the road into a designated pull-out—this keeps wildlife safe as well as other motorists.
Store your food Feeding wildlife in parks can make them come looking for more. Once they have learned that people are a source of food, wildlife can become aggressive toward people. This puts you at risk of injury and the wildlife at risk of being removed. Our message? Store your food and take your rubbish with you when leave.
View from a safe distance The best way to stay safe when watching wildlife is to give animals room to move. Many parks require you to stay a minimum distance of 25 yards from most wildlife and 100 yards from predators (animals react to your presence you are too close). A rule of thumb? If you’re close enough for a selfie, you’re far too close. Let wildlife be wild and observe from a distance using binoculars.
See something, say something Tell your guide/ranger immediately if you come into physical contact with wildlife. Similarly if you see wildlife that are sick, acting strangely or worse, dead, speak up. And should you see people who aren’t following any of the aforementioned guidelines, talk to them and, if necessary, report them. Be responsible On a final note, we all have a duty to keep ourselves safe, by taking heed of wildlife etiquee and not puing ourselves or others in danger. This is just common sense – something we all use every day.

Our Serengeti Safari Camp was the first of it’s kind. It was designed with a purpose in mind; to be in the best possible location to view the wildebeest migration as it covers hundreds of miles of the Serengeti National Park each year. So it should come as no surprise that it really hasn't changed much since it's early pioneering days. For a few months of the year the migration is on our doorstep at Lamai Serengeti. LUXURY SHIRTS
THE PLANET EARTH SHIRT fROm VOLLEBAK IS dESIgNEd TO wORK IN ALL 510 mILLION SquARE KILOmETRES ON THE SuRfAcE Of EARTH, PAcKEd wITH TEcHNIcAL fEATuRES THAT ALLOw THE SHIRT ANd wEARER TO THRIVE wHETHER IN A cITy, RAINfOREST, dESERT, mOuNTAIN RANgE OR ANywHERE ELSE ON THE PLANET.
Each shirt features a reinforced anti-mosquito collar for the jungle, 7 concealed air vents that work like in-built air-con for the desert, a hidden passport pocket for hostile environments, 8 gadget loops for the mountains, stitching reinforced with welding, and shaerproof buons made from the world’s toughest nuts. Water repellent, dirt repellent, bacteria resistant and fast drying, the shirts are built from advanced high-performance Swiss and Italian materials that stretch and breathe like sports gear. We designed the Planet Earth Shirt with input from world recordholding adventurer and former elite military operative Aldo Kane. Trained in jungle, mountain, desert and polar survival, Aldo’s job is to keep himself and others alive in the world’s most extreme environments. The concept was simple – ‘you’ve been thrown into the back of a truck, you don’t know where on earth you’re going to end up, or what your mission is when you get there, what’s the piece of kit you want to be wearing to help keep you alive?’ Vollebak co-founder Steve Tidball says: “Ever since we started our mission to create the future of adventure gear, we knew one of the ultimate challenges would be to build a single piece of clothing that works across any terrain on Earth. The Planet Earth Shirt has been two years in the making and every technical feature plays a part in making this shirt feel as at home in the jungle or desert as it does in the city. Wearing the Planet Earth Shirt helps you be ready for anything, so that wherever you are in the world and whatever you’re doing there, you’re already in the right kit.” Vollebak co-founder Nick Tidball says: “Creating the Planet Earth Shirt has been an exercise in no expense spared technical engineering and crasmanship, from the high performance fabric that we had custom built in Switzerland, and buons that are carved from South American corozo nuts, through to the 62 metres of reinforced stitching and over 35,000 stitches that go into each individual shirt.”

LUXURY SHIRTS
About the material: To build a shirt that can work anywhere on earth you need to start with an exceptional material, so we built our fabric from scratch in Switzerland with cuing edge fabric mill Schoeller. By blending a robust, heavy-weight coon with elastane, we created a material that will cool and calm your skin in intense humidity and stretch with you in any direction. The fabric is also Blue Sign approved which means it’s produced with minimal impact on people and the environment. Jungles, dirt, bacteria and salt water will all destroy your clothes, so we treated every square centimetre with Schoeller’s 3XDRY. It turns the outside of the shirt into a water and dirt repellent shield. And it makes the inside of the shirt behave like a sponge – rapidly absorbing and spreading any sweat over a massive surface area so that it can evaporate at high speed to cool you. An antimicrobial treatment inhibits the growth of bacteria on the fabric to kill microorganisms that feed on heat, humidity and moisture. About the reinforced anti-mosquito collar: The collar can be worn in 4 different configurations. In jungle mode you’ll want to use all the features of the collar – which means turned up high and fastened tight. It’s a reinforced double collar which means you can fold it right up to meet your hairline at the back and jawline at the front. This keeps the sun and mosquitos off the back of your neck, and helps stop any bugs geing down your shirt. In cold weather the same collar will help keep the critical artery at the back of your neck warm. Two strong, lightweight and quiet snap fasteners secure the collar in place. The collar can also be worn turned down and unfastened just like a regular collar. About the concealed air vents: Working down from the collar you’ll find a giant hidden air vent that runs almost the entire length of your spine. Designed for hot, humid, or arid environments it’s one of 7 concealed air vents in the shirt that work together like in-built air-con. Each vent opens and closes either with body movement or with zip closures. And we’ve built them in the places you’re likely to sweat most – down the centre of your spine, your armpits, down the centre of your chest, and around your waist.
www.luxnews.co
world luxury
LUXURY SHIRTS
About the pockets: The pockets make the Planet Earth shirt more like a utility belt. Either side of the concealed air vents on the chest are two deep bellows pockets which concertina out to fit a phone or GPS, and have reinforced stitching so you won’t tear them if you’re rushing. Built directly behind the right chest pocket is an even larger hidden pocket designed to hold things you might want to conceal in a hostile environment. With a concealed zip entrance, it’s large enough to hold your passport, money, maps or documents without any danger of them falling out. Inside the le chest pocket are a series of 8 stitched gadget loops made from a reinforced twill tape for aaching carabiners, compasses or any clip-on gear. Two tunnels on the front of the pocket will hold mini tools, pens or penknives, depending on your plans. On the boom of the pocket is a reinforced hanging loop for tying off. Both chest pockets fasten with two hidden slip buons concealed on a tough woven tape. About the engineered sleeves: The sleeves are engineered in the shape of a moving arm and once you roll up them up, they stay rolled - the material is weighty enough to hold its position. But if you’re moving seriously hard or fast, you can also buon them in place. On the inside of each sleeve you’ll find a 20cm long reinforced strap that you can pull out, up and over the rolled sleeve and fasten to a small slip buon on the outside of the arm that’s secured on its own reinforced patch and military tape. Each 20cm fabric strap has two buonhole seings. About the stitching and welding: Stitching remains a phenomenally durable way to build clothes when it’s executed with patience and skill. Even if one stitch snags, in every shirt there are over 35,000 more to take the strain. Of course, as this is a Planet Earth Shirt, even our stitching is reinforced. Every seam is twin needle stitched, which means two lines of stitching instead of one to double the strength. And at every critical stress point you’ll find one of the shirt’s 19 ma black bartacks welded on to reduce the chance of failure. .
www.luxnews.co

LUXURY SHIRTS
About the buons: Even the way the shirt buons up has been engineered to withstand freezing fingers, sweating hands and hostile vegetation. Rather than being sewn onto the shirt, the buons on the front of the shirt have all been threaded onto a heavy duty woven polyester tape that runs the shirt’s entire length. The tape is then stitched onto reinforced panels above and below each buon. The construction allows the shirt to flex incredibly and withstand any tearing forces, as each buon is free to slide 2 centimetres up and down its section of military tape. All 17 buons are aached in the same way. Every buon on the shirt starts life as a corozo nut buried inside the spiky fruit of the Tagua Palm trees found on the coastal mountain ranges of South America. Corozo is phenomenally strong so can be carved with stunning precision. It’s highly resistant to scratches, extreme temperatures and impact, so won’t crack or splinter. Made from 100% organic fibre, each buon has a unique grain just like a fingerprint, so no two will ever be the same. And all buons are sculpted with a highly polished 30 degree taper towards the edges to make them extremely easy to slip into place. www.vollebak.com/planet-earth-shirts

Nearly 50 years ago, Land Rover created the luxury SUV sector with the introduction of the Range Rover. Now it’s defining a new genre with the world’s first full-size luxury SUV coupé: the limited-edition two-door Range Rover SV Coupé. Created by Land Rover Design and Special Vehicle Operations, SV Coupé is an exemplar of Range Rover design, crasmanship and capability. It features a seductive body allied to the next-generation of cabin luxury – with the peerless all-terrain ability expected from Range Rover. No more than 999 will be hand-craed by SVO for clients worldwide. Gerry McGovern, Chief Design Officer, Land Rover, said: “The Range Rover SV Coupé is a celebration of the Range Rover bloodline. With a dramatic twodoor silhouee, this breath-taking four seat coupé alludes to its unique heritage whilst being thoroughly modern and contemporary. Beautifully realised, superbly engineered, the Range Rover SV Coupé delivers the most distinguished, luxurious and exclusive Range Rover ever built.” Beautiful proportions with a powerful stance give SV Coupé unrivalled onroad presence. The signature floating roof, continuous waist and tapering tail are instantly recognizable Range Rover DNA, yet are expressed in a unique way for this exclusive addition to the Range Rover family.

Carefully curated body colour combinations, including a new Contour Graphic available in four duo-tone colourways, are offset by unique side vent and grille designs. This is also the first Range Rover with a 23-inch wheel option. Enhanced luxury and exquisite crasmanship extends inside too, with semi-aniline leather front seats bringing Range Rover’s already premium interior to a new level of luxury: accommodation comparable to private jets and yachts. Their gradated diamond quilt design is unique to SV Coupé. Each SV Coupé will be handassembled to the client’s personal specification by the fastidious experts at the SVO Technical Centre in the UK – a first for Range Rover. John Edwards, Land Rover Special Operations Managing Director said: “The introduction of the new SV Coupé brings a new level of individual expression to the Range Rover portfolio and builds on the success of Special Vehicle Operations’ existing bespoke Range Rover programme. Feedback from SV clients who have already seen the vehicle in confidential commissioning sessions has been overwhelmingly positive.” SV Coupé clients can choose from four front-to-rear contrast interior colourways, or a range of singletone interior colours. Both are complemented by a choice of three elegant wood veneers. A first for Range Rover is Nautica, which carefully balances heritage crasmanship with new technology, fusing walnut and sycamore together. jaguarlandrover.com

“History set our precedent, and today RollsRoyce answers its call to action,” comments Müller-Ötvös. “Our answer to the visionaries, adventurers, explorers and those who believe in the supremacy of liberty is the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.” The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is Rolls-Royce as it’s never seen before. When Sir Henry Royce said, “Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it beer. When it does not exist, design it”, he could have had Cullinan in mind. “We knew we had to offer our clients what they couldn’t find in the SUV market,” continues Müller-Ötvös. “They do not accept limitations or compromises in their lives. They are the new pioneers, and for them it’s about their sense of adventure and daring in how they live their experiences. This approach to life demands a motor car that can go-anywhere in ultimate luxury and style – Rolls-Royce style. Hence Cullinan.” It was clear that these new, younger and more adventurous customers wanted a Rolls-Royce that would take them completely off the beaten track and reward them with life’s most enriching experiences. What they didn’t want was a vehicle as ubiquitous as an SUV with compromises such as increased cabin noise due to the “two-box” formula; shared platforms that affect performance and comfort; the choice of being good either onroad or off-road; or a lower, more featureless SUV that blends in and becomes just another car. “Cullinan is luxury in its purest form blended with perfect practicality and off-road capability,” comments Müller-Ötvös. “Effortless, Everywhere is not just the promise behind Cullinan. It’s the fact.” Making luxury Effortless, Everywhere engendered an evolution in Rolls-Royce’s approach to creating an authentic Rolls-Royce SUV. The most obvious sign of this was the radical rear of Cullinan.

For the first time a Rolls-Royce has an opening tailgate, called ‘The Clasp’. In a nod to the era when luggage was mounted on the exterior of the motor-car, so the occupants did not travel with their belongings, the rear profile of Cullinan is a two-part, ‘D-Back’ format, with the bustle denoting the place of the luggage. ‘The Clasp’ opens and closes in its two sections automatically at the touch of the key fob buon. The rear passenger compartment of Cullinan has been designed to offer the best seat in the house for the owner’s particular needs. Two rear configurations are offered – Lounge Seats or Individual Seats. The Lounge Seat configuration is the more functional of the two options. With space for three passengers in the rear, it will likely be more aractive to families. The rear seats also fold down – a first for Rolls-Royce. The seats fold electronically in a number of configurations by pressing the appropriate buon in the boot or rear door pocket. One press sees each backrest effortlessly fold down, whist at the same time moving the headrests upwards to avoid making an imprint on the seat cushion. Both seat backs can be folded completely, creating a flat load area or in a 2/3 and 1/3 split, increasing practicality even further. Rear passengers can still travel with a long load, or use the carpeted seat back as an occasional table on which to rest their precious personal items. For those who intend to transport large items back from their adventures, the rear of Cullinan offers a large amount of space in different arrangements. The rear compartment or boot area offers a standard 560 litres of space, growing to 600 with the parcel shelf removed. Furthermore, the base of the rear seats sits higher than the boot floor, so even with both rear seats folded, the items in the boot cannot slip forward and
are safely contained, unlike in any other SUV. But for those wishing to carry a long item back from their trip – whether it be a Mark Rothko from the Art Gallery or a newly discovered artefact from the latest archaeological dig – a loading length of 2245mm and load capacity of 1930 litres is accessed by electronically raising the boot floor to meet the seat base, allowing the item to slide through effortlessly. Rolls-Royce’s investment in making the rear of Cullinan effortlessly and ultimately practical has the side benefit of offering a loading length longer than a Range Rover Vogue Extended Wheelbase. A very practical RollsRoyce indeed. Knowing that the Rolls-Royce customer expects to bespoke his or her Cullinan, a second rear configuration is offered. The Individual Seat configuration is for those who value the ultimate luxury an SUV can offer over practicality. The two individual rear seats are separated by a Fixed Rear Centre Console incorporating a drinks cabinet with RollsRoyce whisky glasses and decanter, champagne flutes and refrigerator. The seats also move in a number of planes to offer ultimate comfort whilst travelling in the rear. One final feature brings Rolls-Royce’s ultimate level of luxury to this configuration of Cullinan, creating the first truly “three-box” SUV. Inspired by the age when one never travelled with one’s luggage, a glass partition isolates the passenger cabin from the luggage compartment, creating an inner ecosystem for the occupants. In addition to enhanced and class-leading silence within the cabin, a further benefit becomes clear in the hoest and coldest of environments. Thanks to the sealed cabin created by the glass partition wall, the occupants can remain in the optimum temperature even when the luggage compartment stands open.

Driving to your remote location is simply the first part of the adventure in a Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Further enjoyment awaits in the shape of a RollsRoyce Recreation Module. Imagine the scene. Having chosen your adventure you call down to your garage. “Jason, we’re going to go drone racing today. Can you load the Drone Module into the Cullinan?” Downstairs, Jason selects the Drone Racing Module from the rack containing several other Recreation Modules that the owner has had commissioned from Rolls-Royce to satisfy his or her preferred recreational pursuits. Fly fishing, photography, rock climbing, snowboarding, parascending, kite boarding, base jumping, volcano boarding or simply siing and taking in the view, anything is possible thanks to the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective. Easily sloed and plugged into the boot of Cullinan, each Recreation Module contains a motorised drawer housing the equipment and paraphernalia specific to each Cullinan owner’s pursuits. When the owner is ready to play, it presents itself. www.rolls-roycemotorcars.com/enGB/home.html

The 1800’s witnessed the arrival of British adventurers such as Samuel L. Baker, and with them, hunting and exploration safaris replete with a small army of butlers, cooks, and trackers.
